Prestatyn 2009 Look Back!

Posted by Tony Foster, 19 March 2009

I could go into a blow by blow account of Prestatyn, but to be honest you only really want to what I found good or not so good, so here goes.

Thursday (Opening night) terrific start, this night has become more popular each year with more and more people turning up for a party. This year was no exception, it was a chance to meet up with old friends and have a few beers at the bar. My good friend the rebellious John Weston was in full party mode on Thursday and even took time out to have a cigarette in good old retro style in the building, in full view of everyone and managed not to get thrown out!!! Away you go John!!!

Friday night (Dance competition) I'm not taking anything away from the finalist, they were good; however I'm sure the judges didn't take into consideration the whole of the dance floor when they were picking the finalists. There was a guy at the back of the room that was brilliant that didn't even get a look at in; come to think of it there were some other dancers at the back of the room that also deserved a second look!

Musically after midnight in the main room the music was superb. Roger Banks kicking things off by playing something a little bit different than the normal oldies, followed by Butch, Andy Dyson, Carl Fortnum, Keith Money and Dave Rimmer and then I was ready for my bed!! All the DJ's were absolutely spot on with their choice of music and the dance floor was full all the time.

Saturday (The artists) probably the best line up I've seen at Prestatyn, no weaknesses anywhere. Lenis Guess, Benny Troy (what a performance), Bobby Patterson, Eula Cooper and the Volumes (wow). The Volumes putting an end to myth and confirming without a doubt their vocal tribute on Lady in green and Heart you're made of stone. Their performance made shivers run down my spine; the vocals were perfect, close your eyes and you just knew it was them who sung on the legendary 45.

Saturday in between acts for me it was Carl and Maria Willingham's Redemption Suite, just what has been needed at the Prestatyn weekender. I have the up most respect for these two people, both for their knowledge and their outstanding contribution to the Northern soul scene. The line up of Dj's were very well chosen and kept the place full and interesting for the whole night. The only complaint was I wish they had put them in Arena 5 (House of soul) for the night, where there would have been more room and a better dance floor, so more people could have been able to enjoy the quality of this night. Also they wouldn't have had to put with that annoying guy on his bongos.

Sunday (Queen Vic & the Modern Room) every year these two rooms always prove to be the best musically for me. I'm not knocking what is played in the main room but there are only so many times you can hear the Casualeers - Dance, dance, dance. My ears would have been bleeding if I had stayed in there. On the other hand Keith Money, John Weston and Mick H in the Queen Vic playing some of the rarest of the rare made for a great ending to the weekend. My good friend Bill was right in saying that it's very easy to come complacent with what is played the Queen Vic and not really fully appreciate how rare those tunes are. Top quality was the order of the day for the Queen Vic on the Sunday night.

Then to finish off Soul Sam and Fish in the modern room, playing all the top soul classics and cutting edge modern soul tunes. It was a fitting finish to another fantastic Prestatyn weekender. Finally even the weather was good all weekend, not the usual rain, wind and freezing cold conditions as normal. No, this time the sun was shining and the music was good if you were looking in the right places for your needs! Accommodation was the same old concrete boxes but hey ho you can't have everything!!!

Disciples Of Soul 27th Feb 2009

Posted by Tony Foster, 01 March 2009

Hail all the Disciples of Soul, what a cracking night! After following the sat nav on to a car park that closes at 12 and then asking the locals where the Sunflower Lounge is to a reply of "Is it a gay place" to which I answered promptly "No", (I think some people presume that anyone with a bald head is a part of Right Said Fred) !

Tip! If you going to the Sunflower Lounge it's just down from Debenhams on the right, you can't miss it as you are bound to find one Dave Rimmer and John Weston very close by! Car parking is ample, we came off the car park that closes at 12 and found a car park that is £2.50 until half 2 in the morning and is within walking distance of the Sunflower Lounge.

This place may be on the small side but the music is very "BIG", everyone played great spots, Phil blew me away with his selection of music! Top man! This was followed by loads more rarities from the guests and residents and then Mr Ian Cunliffe, what a spot, it must have been without doubt one of the best spots I've heard Ian do. Rare quality 45's for over an hour and Joan, the Stunners sounded superb!!! Fantastic!!!

Not forgetting the floor show entertainment provided by John Weston, it's worth a fiver just to see John perform! One of the scenes characters, brilliant John!!!

Combine the music, with the 60's - 70's retro of the place and you have got the recipe for a great soul night!!! I'm really glad they are looking for a spin off of this great place add a bigger dance floor and you have got a very fine soul night indeed!!!

Well done and a very big thank you to all the Disciples of Soul for a great night!!! 10/10

Sounds Of Soul (saturday 17th January)

Posted by Tony Foster, 18 January 2009

Another great night at the AP Club, Station Road,Holmes Chappel. Good to see so many people there for this major player in the Soul scene.

All the DJ's played terrific quality sets on the night. Woody (Mr Soul) played a very nice contrast of soulful 45's which included Bonnie Herman, The Hytones, Soulettes and the Isonics, book him for your venue.

Jumpin Joan of DDA fame, impressed us all again with a really great set of rare and underplayed tunes, I especially liked 'Hilda', what a track, one on my wish list!

Dave Welding, another quality set, Lee Fields, Magnetics etc etc etc. Not a bad track among them!

John Parker, has this guy got some tunes. Fred and the Turbines, Gene Toones, The Tiaras, Bobby Kline, Patrinell Slaten, The Camaros. Absolutely fantastic spot, what more can you say the records played speak for themselves. Stunning, Soul Heaven!!!

Lastly double decking from the hard working duo Martin and Kev, these guys deserve every success with this soul night, a lot of thought, careful planning and preparation goes in to every night to make them unique and they certainly do succeed. Saturday 28th March sees the 2nd Anniversary of this event; DJ's for this so far include Mick H, Arthur Fenn, Phil Threlfall and Ian Cunliffe. You've got to be there for this one, put it in your diary and don't miss it!!! Lots of people there last night and I'm sure for the Anniversary it will be a packer!!!

Don't forget the DDA and Lowton's anniversary next month, Friday February 13th (Another premier league night).

Bishops Wood Xmas Bash 2008

Posted by Tony Foster, 14 December 2008 ·

What a terrific night, many thanks to Larry, Elaine, Col and Gay for an excellent Christmas Bash. Top tunes, great DJ's, fantastic food provided courtesy of Paul Gould's better half and a free cd courtesy of Paul Gould. If you weren't there you missed a great night.

I even had my hair done especially for the night, it was that good. All the characters out were out and true to form they showed their talents, the soul (police woman) Elaine, Col (Rasta) Kidson, Harpo (was out for the night courtesy of the local psychiatric unit), Sandi with her new shocking pink hair and Mrs (Claus) Soul (Lou). Sarah Evison showed her juggling skills with mince pies none the less and there was even a band put together especially for the night?

The dance floor was kept busy right until the end of the night by two of the scenes highly regarded DJ's Harpo and Sandi. They both have a wealth of knowledge spanning over 30 years between them and they played great choices in music. Tip; listen carefully to their spot and take note, you just might find yourself listening to tomorrow's biggies.

All the DJ's on the night did a great job and played something for everyone, soul music that was not that serious, no politics involved just great tunes and a terrific party atmosphere.

Well done to everyone and thank you once again for a terrific night. 2009 will be the year for Bishops Wood, the friendliest venue on the Soul scene.

Here's my half of what I played with Larry;

LEO PRICE & BAND - HEY NOW BABY - UP/DOWN

JIMMY BURNS & THE FANTASTIC EPICS - YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE - TIP TOP

GEORGE KIRBY - WHAT CAN I DO - CADET

SUSAN REWIS - THEY SAY YOU'VE FOUND A NEW BABY - COLUMBIA

Oldie Or Classic?

Posted by Tony Foster, 11 December 2008 · 13 views

It really surprises me when people talk about oldies, is it just the oldies they can remember from 30 years ago, or is it that they just did not go anywhere in the 80's and 90's and don't know the oldies from then. There are thousands of 45's that have been played in the last 30 years, how boring life would be if we only listened to the top 500 northern soul tunes, I'm sure we would all be really bored. The soul scene was born on discovering what was new and finding that elusive tune that would make you search for evermore to have it in your collection. The newies of the 70's were the 80's oldies and so on. At a night last year at the Stables a guy came up to me and said "I really enjoyed your spots at Blackburn in the 90's, they are now my oldies". Let's face it they are all old records, how old does a 45 have to be before it can be said to be an oldie or a classic?

I previously posted the above in Sandi's blog. Then got wondering what 45's do you regard as classics or class oldies, any thoughts please let me know, I'll post them in my blog

In Trying Times "read On"

Posted by Tony Foster, 02 November 2008 ·

In trying times you need a release "read on"

The weekly TV and radio news keeps telling us that we are in the midst of a recession and there seems to be doom and gloom everywhere. In times like these doesn't it make you glad that you can listen to soul music that tells you something about your life and gives you hope!

Northern Soul is my escape and my pressure release valve from the stresses of everyday life. That's why I decided to a put a website together which included a Northern Soul Juke Box so that others could listen to the music and escape also. It's a labour of love but if one person gets a little joy out of listening to the tunes then it serves its purpose.

If you want to add a flyer or a link to your website, drop me line and I will be only too happy to add your information etc to the site. www.northernsoul45.co.uk

Ady Pountain

Maria Willingham

Kenny Onions

Chris Morgan

Glen Hunter

What a cracking night, absolutely superb!

A really nice venue and less than ten minutes from the M6 turn off to Holmes Chapel. Arriving there was a little bit like bonfire night, it started off slowly and then reached the grand finale not with fireworks of course but with an array of soul music provided by Maria Willingham. Wow!

All the DJ's on the night did an outstanding job, nice to see Kenny Onions on the guest list playing class soulful tunes from the Stafford era up to the present day. This guy is really one of the scenes dark horses, last night he gave us a taster of what he has in his box and I'm sure there is a lot more to come from Kenny.

Ady Pountain kindly provided the music for the cd that was given away free on the door, every track a gem. No introductions needed for Ady, he played a superb set.

The last hour was terrific to say the least; Maria Willingham's spot was stunning, a fantastic array of soul music that would blow the mind of any punter. Wow, wow and then some more!!! Let me tell you it was well worth a fiver just to listen to her spot which included The Parliaments - This is my rainy day, what a terrific track, it never fails to get me up dancing. On the whole an excellent soul night that will keep on going from strength to strength.

Put these dates in your diary, if rare soul is your bag this is the place for you!

Sure-shot 60's Soul & R&b

Posted by Tony Foster, 07 September 2008 · 12 views

SURE-SHOT 60'S SOUL & R&B

I was really glad we could get over to the Moorlands Club on Friday the 5th September.

The rain was pouring down, no surpise there, but what was a surprise at the end of an hour journey. One very retro 60's soul and R&B club; as soon as we arrived we met Roger and his lovely wife, great to see happy faces after a journey on the rain soaked roads.

Roger introduced to me Sam Moore who jointly runs the venue. Both putting in a huge amount of input into a very busy authentic club, also may I add they both do terrific DJ spots. The guests DJ's can play whatever they want as long as it falls in the category of 60's soul or R&B of course, this makes for a cracking night of discovery. Some really class R&B tunes were played along side some rarely played Northern gems.

The DJ's on the night were the Lincoln Imps (Trevor and Martin) & The Two Suits (Steve and Chris) along side the residents Roger Banks and Sam Moore. Tunes played included Bobby Day - Pretty little girl next door, Timi Yuro - Ain't gonna cry no more, Ted Taylor - Somebody's always trying, Diane Jones - High blood pressure, Gwenn Douglas - The picture, Douglas Banks - Ain't that just like a woman, Lonzine Cannon - Quit while I'm a head, Donald Jenkins - Somebody help me, Freddie King - 100 years, Johnnie Mae Matthews - Lonely you'll be, Gino - It's only a paper moon, etc etc etc.

The authenticity of the surroundings along side the quality 60's music and the vast selection of collectable 45's on the record bar, make this a worth while place to visit. I will certainly be going back whenever I can to give them my support. Next month I believe is there first anniversary and I'm sure will definitely not be the last, a venue of unique nature, that there is a market for, well worth a visit. Top marks.

Dda.and Lowton August 2008

Posted by Tony Foster, 09 August 2008

DDA and Lowton August 2008

In the present times of confusion among promoters advertising soul nights and then turning up to find it's actually a club classic or motown night. It's really pleasing to attend one of the longest running true Northern Soul events; you won't find your club classics or dance around your handbag tunes here. Instead you will find a Northern Soul night under the correct banner, in the main room the more familiar four beats to the bar biggies and class oldies and might I add every time I popped my head around the door the dance floor was always full, but then again it was really only when Bob Hinsley was on. Then just off the main room a real gem of night, the DDA room.

A warm welcome awaits you as soon as you walk in; the people are really knowledgeable about the music and the history of the soul scene which is always a good sign, and then the music grabs you. It isn't long before you hear something that makes you want to get up and dance, each DJ has their own identity and style of soul music that ranges from forgotten quality oldies to the more obscure under exposed semi knowns and rarities. At times it can be a real conversation killer, as you can be chatting away and then a mind blower of a tune will be played that makes you want to head for the dance floor immediately. The DJ's on the night were Jumpin Joan, Stuart Cheetham, Paul Sadot, Ron Handle and Karl Rhodes. No need to tell you how good these guys are, the beauty of the DDA is it's free and easy nature to the music, everyone involved including the punters love the soul music from the heart and it shows. Just how it should be with emphasis on quality rather than value, none of the attitude "It's cost me a packet so I'm playing it", syndrome here. That's not to say that a lot of what's played isn't rare and some do have a big price tag, however the mega rare and the £10 unknown fall beautifully into place and after an hour or two you soon realise how well it's all blended together. A night for the soul enthusiast that I can recommend, make the DDA a part of your monthly diet of Soul!

July Lookback !

Posted by Tony Foster, 03 August 2008

July was a fantastic month start to finish and the highlight of the month for me was the superb soul night in the memory of Pete Lawson. Nothing short of excellent, I must say Joan puts on a cracking night, Pete would have been really proud. The music was fantastic, ultra rare, semi known, underplayed oldies and current in demanders. Something for everyone and not a moan in the place, just how it should be!

August got off to cracking start with the Soul Academy at Stafford first and then off to Bishops Wood all-nighter. What a terrific night, packed to the hilt and music that I could only describe as mind blowing. All the DJ's did cracking spots and you would be hard pressed to find that many rare 45's in one place anywhere in the country at any one time. Stunning!!! I am proud to say that I tipped this venue to be big at the very start, the organisers have a very broad outlook when it comes to soul music and the only thing they are interested in is putting a quality soul night and all-nighter on. Last night they ticked all the right boxes, music, atmosphere and hospitality. Terrific!!!

A brilliant start to the month, next weekend I'm off up to Lowton to give the DDA some support.

A few of the 45's I played at the Soul Academy

LEO PRICE & BAND - HEY NOW BABY - UP/DOWN

Soul Academy & Double Deckers Update

Posted by Tony Foster, 06 July 2008 ·

July 4th Double Deckers

The weekend started off with a trip down to see Helen and Mart at the Double Deckers Soul Club. What a great idea! No politics and no rules on what to play, just out and out quality tunes from the start. I did a bit of double decking with Wulfie, among the tunes he played was the Gospel Classics - More love that's what we need, a fantastic piece of quality soul which brought back memories from my wedding day. We had the Gospel Classic - More love that's what we need, to walk down the isle to, followed by Velvelettes - These things will keep me loving you, while we signed the register and then the Spinners - Sweet thing after the ceremony to go out of the Church. As the wife will tell you I was twenty minutes late but that's another story.

Anyway back to this weekend, this is what I played on my half of the spot at the Double Deckers

GARLAND GREEN - AIN'T THAT GOOD ENOUGH - REVUE

GEORGE CAMERON - MY HEART TELLS ME SO - PORTRAIT

TOMMY NAVARRO - I CRIED MY LIFE AWAY - DE JAC

BITS N PIECES - KEEPS ON RUNNING AWAY - NASCO

PAUL SINDAB - I WAS A FOOL - KNOX

INVITATIONS - WATCH OUT LITTLE GIRL - MGM

PETE WARNER - I JUST WANT TO SPEND MY LIFE WITH YOU - POLYDOR

Saturday 5th July

SOUL ACADEMY - STAFFORD RANGERS

What a great feeling to back, I'd forgotten what a great room and what big dance floor it had got.

Fantastic to see so many people in to welcome my old mate Shute back, we really didn't think that this would be happening again, especially when he was in the Hospital after surgery. But he is back and God bless him.

It was also a privilege to be on the same night as Johnny Fingers, we owe this guy so much at Stafford. How many people do you know that have got the 100 club all-nighter on their doorstep and choose to travel miles to support a venue that he really believes in? A very big thank you to the man who I have nothing but respect for, he really is what the soul scene is about and I am glad to say that he will back with us on Saturday August 2nd.

It goes without saying that we owe a big thank you to Jellybean and Mart for all their hard work supplying and putting in the equipment. Not only that, but they are also a solid part of the team and Dj line up at Stafford. Great spots from both of them and also a very big thank you!!!!

Not forgetting Dj Doody who is also resident at the Rangers 'Soul Academy' who plays a quality rare spot. This guy is one to watch!

Lastly the most important part of any venue without a doubt is you, the punters. Because of the attendance of last night and the many requests for another night, we have decided to go ahead with our original date next month Saturday August 2nd.

Do come along and support us, it is really appreciated, you lot make the difference and make it all worth while, thank you all.

A Lot To Look Forward To In July

Posted by Tony Foster, 22 June 2008 ·

July 2008

Looking forward to July, it's going to be a very soulful month.

4th July - Double Deckers Soul Club 8 till 1.00pm

I'm really looking forward to this night, I've heard so many good reports about the venue and what a great idea. It will certainly keep the dj's on their toes, doubling up for the spots should produce some really quality tunes and overall a good night for all.

5th July - Soul Academy, Stafford Rangers 8 till 1.00pm

A big welcome back to Shute, as you all probably know he has had serious run of ill health and at one point a few of us thought he would never be doing this again. It would be overwhelming for him to see you all at this re-opening night of the Soul Academy Stafford's No1 Soul Night. Quality soul music is the order of the day at Stafford as well as a friendly welcome. See you all there, come on make his day.

12th July - Bishops Wood Soul Night Wolverhampton 8 till 1.00pm

Resident dj's, Col Kidson, Gaye Kidson & Larry Mc.

July guests are two of the West Midlands top dj's, Dave Rimmer and Gary Holyman.

This night has quality written all over it. Don't miss it!!!

19th July - Pete Lawson Memorial Night 4pm till 1am

Even though the King's Hall is on and on my doorstep I'm travelling up north, this long awaited event is set to be a fitting tribute to one of the Northern scene's now legends. Even if you did not know Pete don't worry about it, everyone is welcome and believe me this will be incredible. It's hard to believe it's been fifteen years since his tragic death. I always remember Pete going through box after box of 45's and always being forthcoming with his opinion, top man. The Soul fraternity will be coming from all over for this one to pay tribute and spin those elusive sounds.

Bishops Wood L@@kback !

Posted by Tony Foster, 16 June 2008 · 10 views

Well Bishops Wood All-nighter has been and gone and what a cracking night it was! Even though the numbers could have been better it was still the same old party atmosphere we have come to expect from this well respected venue. Scotty had been down to the car boot and amazed people with he had found for 10p. Masks, torches, bow and arrows etc all added to the party atmosphere. Have a look at the photo section of Soul Source; you'll see what I mean.

http://www.soul-sour...ter-t74775.html

Dj's were all terrific, John Weston playing outright quality obscure rarities including what has become Ted Massey's favourite, Voices Inc - Thinkin'. Just joking I personally love the record but I know Ted is not that fond of the 45. Magnetics - Lady in green was also another personal favourite of mine that John played. He also has quite a nice sales box that's well worth a look if you are passing. I managed to get myself a very nice Charles Farren that I later played later in my spot out of John's box.

Carl Fortnum, well I could listen to him DJ for hours on end. His set just oozed quality, years ago he was the main man at Bradford all-nighters and to this day I still rate him as one of the best DJ's and collectors in the country. Don Gardner - Cheatin' Kind and the Admirations - You Left Me, did it for me, wow a very hard man to follow.

After Carl I had the daunting task of following him on. Play list below.

Ian James, a man with a collection with something on everyone's wants list. Considering he had not done a DJ spot for thirteen years and was nervous before he went on, he did an excellent spot. I am sure we have not see the last of Ian, expect to see his name regularly on flyers.

Col, Larry, Gaye and Anton played a mixture of dance floor classics to the ultra rare. Col never ceases to amaze me; he can pull out some incredibly rare 45's from the back of his box. Last night the Four Tracks - Like my love for you and Herb Johnson - Carfare back!!! Who knows what other gems he has in there?

Larry is a star, if you want tips on what you can find from car boots and charity shops, he's your man. Amazing LP's he has turned up for 50p.

What I like most about the place is the very friendly atmosphere. You don't find many venues these days where everyone talks to one another and greets you like it has been ten years since they last saw you. The music policy is quality soul all the way, from the very rare to the more common 45's you hear at most venues. Exactly what the punters want, if you request it and they've got, you know it will get played. A Politics free venue is also hard to find, so if you are looking for a soul night or future all-nighter to visit, try Bishops Wood.

My DJ spot from the night, in no particular order.

Charles Farren - You've Changed My Whole Life Around - Hawk

Karen Sue - Something On My Mind - United Artists

Gwen Davis - My Many Don't Think I Know - Sound Stage 7

Posse - Evil - Janus

Charles Lamont - I've Got To Keep Movin' - Challenge

Pete Warner - I Just Want To Spend My Life With You - Polydor

Paul Sindab - I Was A Fool - Knox

Johnny Guitar Watson - Ain't Gonna Move - Jowat

Philharmonics - I Need, I Need Your Love - Soulin

Billy Davis - Stanky (Get Funky) - Cobblestone

Vibrations - Cause You're Mine - Epic

Tommy Navarro - I Cried My Life Away - De Jac

Bishops Wood June 14th 2008 All-nighter

Posted by Tony Foster, 03 June 2008 · 14 views

First of all I would like to thank everyone on behalf of Shute for the kind words, thoughts, get well messages and support you have shown him and his family, I know they really appreciate it. Good news he is making progress and hopefully will be on a normal ward, whatever one of those is? Also thank you to everyone who has supported all of us at the Rangers (Soul Academy), for the time being it is cancelled, obviously Shute's health takes priority at the moment, but hopefully it should be back later in the year.

Great news!!!! June 14th is the date that is set for the next Bishops Wood All-Nighter. The last one was a packer, the atmosphere was brilliant and the music quality was nothing short of brilliant. A soul all-nighter with a party atmosphere is the order of the day at Bishops Wood. The organisers Larry, Col and partners have worked extremely hard in making this place a success, don't miss it, mark it on your calendar and come along for nine cracking hours of quality, four beats to the bar, Northern as it should be Soul!!!!! You won't be disappointed!!!

Soul Academy & Johnny Fingers

Posted by Tony Foster, 06 April 2008

It was great to be back doing a DJ spot back at the Soul Academy at the Rangers. Despite the weather a reasonable turn out with new faces and a steady growth in attendance.

It's the first time I had the pleasure of meeting the guest DJ "Johnny Fingers" and might I say he's a really nice genuine character. He has an outstanding collection of 45's and his enthusiasm for the music really comes over when talking to him. He started his spot with Larry Clinton - She's Wanted, an all time favourite of mine from way back, then he went on to play in his set The Tranells, Al Williams, Jimmy Phillips, Cookie Jackson, Dean Parrish, Mill Evans etc. Top notch! It was an education being in his company, his knowledge of the music is fantastic. One of those people you listen to and respect, he's been there, done it and got the T shirt, a real credit to the soul scene.

It may have been cold outside but inside it was really hot, not only atmospherically but musically. All the DJ's on the night were excellent, playing a mixture of oldies, newies, R&B etc. Top stuff!!!

My own spot, 10 till 11 went as follows

BOBBY WILLIAMS - I'VE ONLY GOT MYSELF TO BLAME - SURE SHOT

METROS - SINCE I FOUND MY BABY - RCA

SOUL BROTHERS SIX - I'LL BE LOVING YOU - ATLANTIC

LEVI JACKSON - THIS BEAUTIFUL DAY - COLUMBIA

LAVERN BAKER - WRAPPED, TIED AND TANGLED - BRUNSWICK

RINGLEADERS - BABY, WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO MY LOVE - M-PAC

MARY WELLS - CAN'T YOU SEE (YOU'RE LOSING ME) - ATLANTIC

YOUNGHEARTS - A LITTLE TOGETHERNESS - CANTERBURY

VIBRATIONS - CAUSE YOU'RE MINE - EPIC

KAREN SUE - SOMETHING ON MY MIND - UNITED ARTISTS

LEON THOMAS - L.O.V.E - PHILIPS

TERRY CALLIER - LOOK AT ME NOW - CADET

AMBERS - POTION OF LOVE - SMASH

KENNY CARLTON - LOST AND FOUND - BLUE ROCK

TURLEY RICHARDS - I FEEL ALRIGHT - COLUMBIA

BALLAD'S - I CAN'T SEE YOUR LOVE - VEE JAY

BILLY DAVIS - STANKY - COBBLESTONE

SHANE MARTIN - I NEED YOU - EPIC

GEORGE CAMERON - MY HEART TELLS ME SO - PORTRAIT

GARNET MIMMS - LOOKING FOR YOU - UNITED ARTISTS

PETE WARNER - I JUST WANT TO SPEND MY LIFE WITH YOU - POLYDOR

PHILHARMONICS - I NEED, I NEED YOUR LOVE - SOULIN

TOMMY NEAL - GOING TO HAPPENING - VOCALION

CHANTS - BABY I DON'T NEED YOUR LOVE - RCA

CLAUDE HUEY - WHY WOULD YOU BLOW IT - GALAXY

BERNARD WILLIAMS - FOCUSED ON YOU - HARTHON

Next month May 3rd unfortunately has had to be cancelled due to Shute's health.

Marr's A Bank Holiday ! All Nighter !

Posted by Tony Foster, 24 March 2008

After travelling for an hour and twenty five minutes, we finally parked up and went into the Marr's Bar. First impressions were good, a warm welcome and a friendly atmosphere, a good positive start. Des Parker was behind the decks, who played very soulful spot, top marks for imagination and quality. If this was the start it could only get better and it did! You could not fault what was played with a mixture from the ultra rare to the ever popular oldies but goodies. All the DJ's were exceptional and kept the dance floor full for most of the night. The people were enthusiastic, friendly and good company. It was really nice to visit a place with energy!!!! Even the bar staff were on the floor, the atmosphere and music was that good!!!! It's 30 years to the month since I went to my first all nighter at the Casino and wow, this still feels as good now as it did then. This has got to be among the top ten all nighters in the country without a doubt. It could probably even win the award for the most talc on a dance floor and in the air!!! A definite all nighter to visit on every bank holiday. 10/10

Bishops Wood Review

Posted by Tony Foster, 09 March 2008 ·

What a terrific night and a great venue! Friendly, great atmosphere and easy to find!

It is really nice to get back to Northern events that are as welcoming as this one. As soon as you step through the door you are overwhelmed by the friendliness and atmosphere of the place. The night was absolutely buzzing with great tracks being played by all the DJ's. They have a great music policy from the rarest of the rare to timeless tracks that have filled dance floors without effort for years. All I may say are original 45's which is great to see! A time or two I had to venture over to the decks just to satisfy my own curiosity. John Pugh did an excellent spot which including Stafford tracks like Little John - Just Wait and See, Lost Souls - Secret of Mine etc. The now legendary Ted Massey kicked off his spot with one of my all time favourite tunes Ray Agee - I'm Losing Again and then went on to include Nat Hall - Why and Bobby Kline -Say something Nice To Me. Top marks Ted.

Col Kidson started his spot with a minute silence in regard to the extremely sad news of the passing of our dear soul brother Rob Pomroy (Pomma). My sincere condolences go out to everyone concerned, RIP to a dear soul brother. Please as you read this stop and spare a thought for this sad loss.

Col then bought the dance floor back together with tunes like Verma Lewis - You Do and the Capitols - Can't Deny That I Love You. It was great to be in a place that appreciated great soul music. All the DJ's on the night did a terrific job in keeping the dance floor full and concentrated on quality rather than rarity. It just so happened that the majority of the quality tunes played are really rare. This is a special venue and if this is the start I can see it going from strength to strength.

Well done to Col, Larry and all the team for a very successful first all-nighter at Bishops Wood.
