Northern Soul - The Film - Latest news - March 2012

Word of things moving forwards with the forthcoming film "Northern Soul"

The Manchester Evening news just featured in its business section an article titled

"The film-maker who wants to strike a note with Northern Soul fans"

Basically after the first read it seems the article informs of a opportunity for investors to play a part in supporting this project via an investment scheme....

The below clip gives a basic idea, but seems may be best to view the rest of the article for the full score...

"Northern Soul will be financed via an Enterprise Investment Scheme set up by Nyman Libson Paul Accountants. Interest in the film is already huge, with massive radio and international coverage, and Constantine believes the investment opportunity is an exciting and lucrative one. "The film will go into production this summer and has a planned cinema release for 2013," says Constantine. "We're in the final stages of financing and need investors. Investors will have the opportunity to visit the set and there are opportunities to participate as supporting cast members on a filming day. Then there's the social events such as gala screenings where they can meet cast members.""

"We've got roughly half the budget to date," she says. "We're looking to raise a further £300,000 and then we, as a company, will issue reports to each shareholder informing them of the film's progress and its financial position."

Also featured on the Northern Soul web site is the news that North West singer Lisa Stansfield will be involved

"Singer Lisa Stansfield is to make a return to the limelight on home turf - starring in a new movie about the Northern Soul scene. Lisa, from Rochdale, shot to fame in the 80s with her worldwide hit All Around The World and she continued to dominate the charts in the 90s. But in recent years she's moved away from the music world and concentrated on acting roles. Now, the 45-year-old is set to star in the new movie about two northern lads whose lives are changed forever by the Northern Soul music scene in the 70s. She will play the mum of one of the lads, while actor Christian McKay will play her husband"

the above clip from the rochdale observer, full article at

http://menmedia.co.u...hern-soul-film-

and also news out that there is now a North West dance school set up as well as the down south one...

"All levels are welcome to join our dance club hosted up North by Brent Howath, and down South by Paul Sadot and Franny Franklin. We currently have 350 members and have attracted participants from as far as Italy, France and Spain."

the full details of all above can be read via the links given and of course the actual northern soul film website, link below...

Let`s hope,it`s better than the last effort.Which i thought was poor.

It should be Neil. As has been said on here before. Elaine is a devoted Northern Soul fan. She is a director telling a story (not THE story) of the Northern Soul scene, from an inside perspective if you like. As opposed to someone telling a story second or third hand.

Looking at the guys Elaine has helping her, most from the scene too. I have every confidence that if anyone can do a good job, then its Elaine.

Oh and Matt. You arent paranoid. We are talking about you. Everyone does. All the time :P

£600k is not going to go very far. Maybe a stage play could raise the funds and awareness. Once upon a time in Wigan is/was great when I saw it in Hull. It was only half full though, so I'm not sure how much the demand is for a film version.

Half the records played in 1973 would not get a look in at a normal soul night, so apart from nostalgia, its unlikely to do what quadraphenia did for the mod revival, and therefore bomb at the box office. Probably dvd only apart from a very small number of independant cinemas, and that wont make any money.

Its an honourable investment, but hardly likely to be a profitable one.

Sorry but I'd rather hear from Elaine on the status in due course, rather than your guesswork and supposition about the film Mr. Tomangoes.

That's such a lazy and ill-informed posting that it demands some sort of reply.

Why make the tie-in with the stage play Once Upon A Time In Wigan? These are two completely separate entities. Suggesting putting on a stage play to raise funds and awareness is laughable (as if stage plays themselves require no funding, no research, no casting, no directing, no publicity). This is not a film version of an existing play, it's from a completely original script.

Comments about records played in '73 not getting a look in today are puzzling and to be honest completely irrelevant.

The figure mentioned as a funding target is not the entire budget. A production company, sales agents and so on and all that entails are already on board.

As for demand for the film being only within the scene that's a crazy standpoint. The film and the scene are also two completely separate entities. The film is not being made as an instructional manual for prospective converts or a nostalgia piece for those who have been on the scene their adult lives. It's a story about growing up in the North of England in the '70s and uses being on the scene as a very important part of the background story. The way the story is told will have a universality beyond the confines of the back-story, like any quality drama. Audiences for films can go beyond those who actually have first hand experience of the subject matter. How many who saw "Saving Private Ryan" got shot at on the Normandy Beaches, for example?

Pointing out that this is hardly likely to be a 'profitable investment' when I suspect (forgive me if I am wrong) you are not an expert in feature film finance is unhelpful at best and mischievous at worst.

..couldn't agrree more..well put and said!

I have had the pleasure of meeting a number of the young people involved in this film.

Their enthusiasm and love of the scene really helped smash my cynicism around this sort of thing.

I wish all involved well and really hope it becomes a success.

True, I felt squeamish and embarrassed watching that movie. Also the fact that there were always more blokes than birds.

Can anyone tell me when this is due to be released , I have only just seen the clips on utube and I must say within the short footage that I have seen i feel you really do get a sence of the director capturing the personal passion that we have all felt at some time on our journey with this music. I am looking forward to seeing the film.

I have not read the thread up to now ( being a bit lazy ) so if someone could give me a release date I would much appreciate it.

thanks in advance

So it's not even gone into production yet then, according to the article re. Steve Coogan?

I saw some footage as described by Chris above, where was that from then?

That would have been the 'teaser' I would imagine Pete. Film makers do these to temp people to fund their film, it basically sells it to the investers.

All the best,

Interesting that out of your 15 posts, many seem to about this film... Hmmmmm

I think some people are worried that it may be done so very wrong. I know Elaine and I'm pretty confident that it will be as accurate as can be; she's not stupid and does understand the Scene - That's obviously a good start!

Apart from that I know she is getting advise off the right people that were there 'living it' so come on, give the girl a break and let's be positive and hope that a) It's done correctly (Which I think it will be) and b) That it is a success for her. As Butch said in the investor's brochure, this needs to be documented properly and I think he is helping with some advice about the film.

I love to be negative sometimes and maybe it's me just being facetious (Never grown up me!) but in this case I'm gonna wait and see - That isn't just because I know Elaine (Did I mention that? - God I'm shallow! Lol)

All the best,

Len.

P.s - I do understand that making a film about Northern Soul isn't 'Northern Soul' in itself (Underground) but hey, aren't we all too old to be cool now? - Even me! Lol - Good luck Elaine

Really, all I can see is a load of one liners with no explanation at all.

16 years old teenagers will maybe appreciate this film...or not .

It will maybe create a buzz in china , IMHO the only to make a bit of money...or not !

Do you want to articulate why you think this and what you know about the film to make you think like this, then you might find you someone from the film will actually answer your concerns, they are on FB if it is easier there.

The making money comment is hilarious, if you think that is what this project is about you obviously know nothing about it., And since this seems to be your main gripe how about supplying your full name, to ensure it is not yet another person with a hidden agenda.

He/she had a grizzle about the film in another thread, check his/her content, you get the full explanation, I think it's 2 lines, so much more extensive.............

You have lost me here, its a drama with Northern Soul at the heart of it, if you can be bothered to read the publicity, not a documentary about Northern Soul, as I said before no-one expects Shane Meadows films to tell the whole history of Skinhead movement do they, it is a film set in a certain period of time, like many many British films and they seem determined to make it as authentic as possible for that time, so whats the problem? It is a drama and should be judged as such surely.

I was surprised at girls too, but they are being taught by someone who was there, and to be fair there have been a couple of comments on other threads talking about girls doing so, I went to one of the dance classes just as in area (to watch before any smart ass comments on my less than fluid dance style) and from what I seen about 80% of them had it right and I believe they have improved dramatically since then.

Its about a time dear to many of us, made by one of us, who is putting her heart and soul into everything to do with it, would it be too much to ask for a little positivity?

I bet you Scorsese is pleased he only tackles the Catholic Church and Religion in his movies, rather than this sacred sanctity that is Northern Soul 1974..... :D
