Ian Levine asked me to pass on the following

 

Would you please post on Soul Source that Liz lands passed away this morning in Atlanta.

Born Elizabeth Lands 1939 in The Georgia Sea Islands, grew up in New York City. Lands supposedly had a five octave vocal range started her Motown career before Gordy decided to make a name for her in the R&B/Pop market, sadly it wasn't to be. She had a brief career away from Motown before disappearing altogether until Ian Levine recorded her for his Motorcity label in the late 80's early 90's.

 

No more details are known at this time.

Ironically, i was just restoring a beat up cop of Midnight Johnny this morning. As i listened to the disc after cleaning, I mentally agreed to myself of what a wonderful track it was, and how good Liz performed it.

Like all the artists.....they leave a legacy!

It really is a stunning track, that note that she hits at the end is incredible. I had an alternate version on acetate and it was actually better than the released version.

I have came across two or three people who have sworn blind that they don't like Midnight Johnny, but there wasn't many artists that could have hit those notes at the end.

It took me a while to grasp that it was the Temptations singing behind her :g:

Midnight Johnny is awesome, coincidently I planned on playing this 'out' this weekend and now I wil make sure I will.

Midnight Johnny got a later release, or re release on Gordy, same cat release number but deffo a decade or so later, I'll scan it and post up.

It came out with a different design but I doubt if it would be more than a month later, why would they reissue a flop single like that a decade later?

when I bought it, somebody dated it to early seventies, as the logo its on wasn't in use in 64, so it couldn't have been re issued a month later... I'll scan it and you can make your minds up, I've had this track twice, but never on this Logo, so think it's a pretty rare thing.

I'd say 64-65 but it doesn't look that old! Still can find no reason for a repress though.

According to the Seabear Studios website (https://www.seabear.se/Gordy1.html) which is usually pretty thorough in their research:

The first 45 that utilised the "arrow" logo was:

GORDY 7055 - Temptations - Beauty is Only Skin Deep / You're Not An Ordinary Girl

It was released in August 1966.

All earlier numbers utilising the "arrow" design are reissues/repressings done after August 1966.

Why Liz Lands got reissued? Who knows? Perhaps they just ordered a repress of the wrong cat#? :g:

Yes that's probably exactly what happened.

But the arrow label was introduced in August 1966, so the "Midnight Johnny" arrow-labelled 45 must be from after August 1966.

It probably doesn't matter to most people, but I'd rather have the March 1964 release if I could choose.

I would concur with Pete on that. I have a copy of "Come & Get These Memories" by Martha & The Vandellas on the arrow-design label (originally released in 1962?), so records like this must have remained on catalogue for a few years after their initial release.

"Fingertips" by Little Stevie Wonder on the no-globes Tamla label also springs to mind.

it's clearly on the borderline of the label change and some of the presses got the new design (as everyone has said so far)

Found a scan of the Midnight Johnny Acetate, I assume the unreleased version Pete mentioned..

'Don't shut me out' is heartbreakingly beautiful.

From time to time, it still amazes me that someone with such a wonderful voice can pretty much escape the mainstream attention and opportunities offered to many with far inferior talent in the music industry.

I've found the unreleased acetate version of Midnight Johnny and have put it on divshare for anyone who wants to download it, it jumps in the middle "on purpose" as I wanted the buyer to have an exclusive when I sold it.

Only posted it to give people a chance to hear something they might not and probably won't have heard before, I wasn't attempting to start a popularity contest between two versions.
