A full-on celebration of Wigan Casino and its legendary Northern Soul all-nighters when kids from blue collar lives all across the country could escape 70's tedium and get Out on the Floor and Dance Dance Dance. It's September 1981, the last night of the Casino, and Britain is changing. For Danny, Maxine, Suzanne and Bolton boy Eugene Northern Soul has been their way out – a weekly escape hatch! The Wigan all-nighter was the highlight of the week with Soul Galore and eight hours of classic soul, sweat and passion, to a beautiful soundtrack of Detroit and Philly, east and west coast winners. But Time Will Pass You By, and as the club opens its doors for one last time, Eugene takes us back on an emotional journey to his very first heady night at Wigan, when he saw and fell in love with Maxine. This potent mix of drugs, sex, love and classic 60's and 70's American soul music changed his life, cos like the songs says… It'll Never Be Over For Me… Specially re-commissioned to help celebrate the end of the Octagon's 40th Anniversary Season, Once Upon a Time in Wigan - LIVE! re-unites the team that created the full-on and funky Eight Miles High, the smash hits Blonde Bombshells of 1943, and Oh What A Lovely War. Saw it three times with two differerent cast members ( twice in London in consecutive years)
including the last time it showed at Coventry - would highly recommend it to anyone, though my Bank Manager would hate it as it got me back into buying again properly!! Wulfie |

No, it's NOT the original show. It's more like 'Once Upon A time In Wigan' - the Musical. Instead of playing the original records... they've got a live band singing the songs instead. Don't know about you... but I reckon the original music is THE most essential part of the play. The thought of having some tribute band singing the songs instead... its sacrilege! Even the best musicians in the world could never recreate the memories those songs hold for each and every one of us. I'll give it a miss thanks -------------------- five percenters... a rare breed indeed

The play mirrored my life even getting made redundant in 1982. Cant see for the life of me why they should change it. Steve -------------------- Only the big man upstairs can judge me

Cant see for the life of me why they should change it. Steve We saw it twice too... with different casts... but both shows bloody brilliant. Have no idea who had the ' live band ' brainwave I do know it has absolutely nothing to do with Paul Sadot... he was appalled when he found out... and rightly so! The play was something anyone would have been proud of... must be heartbreaking to see it come to this. -------------------- five percenters... a rare breed indeed

Seating layout: End On Booking Your TicketsBOOK ONLINE NOW!Back to What's On[/quote] THIS CRAP IS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PLAY THAT MY COMPANY TOURED TO THOUSANDS OF SOULIES IN 2004! THIS IS A MUSICAL WHERE, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, WHITE ACTORS SING THE SONGS TO A HOUSE BAND. A bit like THE WHEELTAPPERS AND SHUNTERS SOCIAL CLUB! They have been deliberately trying to confuse in the advertising and I had to ask them to remove a newspaper quote about my play, that they were using to advertise theirs! I devised this play, based on my experiences of going to wigan and Mick Martin wrote it. Unfortunately, as he was a friend of 20 years, I trusted him to look after it and not sell it to the highest bidder. MISTAKE. The guy is not and was not, a soulie. The production worked in its presentation, the actors, the film, the setting, but, most of all, the use of a real and narrative sound track. Mark Babbage, the director, hasn't got a clue about our scene and its soulful ethic! If he did, he wouldn't dare trivialise it , by doing a musical execution of something that means a lot, to a lot of people. Watch out for Winstanley popping up at the opening! From the heart Paul-s |

Yes , and ask them to come along in clothing / attire like the audiences does for " The Rocky Horror Show " , and ask them to throw stimulants in capsule form at the stage during certain times ....... I love the comment by Paul Sadot in his posting , that the " revised " show being like " The Wheeltappers & Shunters Social Club " ...... I can just picture Dustbin Stanley as Colin Crompton ....... " Order please , ladies and gentlemen ; give the turn a chance " ........ Malc Burton This post has been edited by Malc Burton: Feb 24 08, 10:24 AM
