Looking forward to coming to lovely Bournemouth to see you and the guys. Coming straight from the Gloucester Friday night allniter so excuse us if we're buzzing and at it from the minute we get in.

No point in growing old gracefully is there?

Had a great time last time Dave, but is it me, or is it that every night we get on the decks together it all goes a bit bonkers ? In a good way - remember Torquay, and when you were down here struttin' your stuff at Bridgwater? Bring it on !

Heatwave, are you sure

Not bad musically , but not very ' Northern ' ?

I'll leave that one to Micky Lloyd.

Talking of Mr Lloyd. If you're reading this Mick then just to let you know if you ask bar staff they'll pop into Dylans bar for you and get you a Guiness or 2.You can't go in there yourself as they have a private party going on.

i arrived early to find dave and danny putting the finnishing touches to the dj gear and the room....chocs and mince pies for all and they didnt last long

once mischief got his hands on them......one of the best turn outs at the uni ive seen and with pete and mick as the guest djs a great night was definately

in store.....a mix of tunes from all the djs ensured an excellent atmosphere and lots of faces coming out of the woodwork....lord lyster was the pick of the

djs for me...mixing mega rare tunes with classic oldies and cheaper tunes...some nice 7ts tunes by mr lloyd and a very nice xmas number by mischief had the

uni,s strictly come dancing fans having a ball....a mostly full dancefloor for everybodies 2nd set and a fair few still there at the end

too many ppl to mention by name but was great to see some of the ppl that used to frequent bournemouths premier soul night...cagneys under the management of

Morning all,

Well what can I say after last saturday night.A big thank you to Pete & Mick for a couple of blinding spots each. Also to my partner in crime (so to speak) Danny.Would also like to thank Mischief and a very big thank you to Viv for all she does.

A great crowd in and the dance floor full for most of the night.I think the one exception was Mischiefs attempt at Xmas Come Dancing.

This was certainly one of our best nights in the 4 years we've been running.

Good to see lots of old faces as well as some new ones.Moldie thanks for the vids,as always up to yopur usual standard.

Our next night is Feb 18th 2012 when we have Ian Spittle and Gary Samways joining us on the decks.Plus Ian will be celebrating his 50th birthday.

To everyone that was there on sat night and those that couldn't make it then we'd like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Dave,Viv,Danny,Mandy & mischief.

.

. Thankfully, we didn't get a repeat of last year's mid-December heavy fall of snow and hence the auspices for this 4th or 5th ? anniversary night were much more favourable. Sure enough when we arrived around 9.30 p.m. the place was already bristling with a warm ambience of people welcoming one another or mingling and gathering. Mick Lloyd was behind the decks playing stuff akin to Curtis Lee - Is she in your town to warm up proceedings.

. As we found a space to settle down, the familiar much favoured tune of The Enchantments - I'm in love with your daughter was playing and what really took me aback was how clear and crisp it sounded, much more so than I've ever heard before. Instead of that same old same old experience, it felt fresh, as did so much of the music.

. This was in stark contrast to a recent trip in November to The Blue Lagoon in Portsmouth. The D.J.s on the night produced some really great dance tunes and yet these couldn't be embraced in their rightful manner because the amplifier was playing up. What should have been an entertaining affair, turned out to be quite irritating because for much of the night there were varying degrees of undesirable vibration that aggravated our enjoyment of the music.

. Last Saturday's experience at Bournemouth University brought home the importance of good sound quality and how Dave Morris and Danny North have invested wisely in an appropriately uncomplicated high standard of sound system.

. I really believe that the enhanced feel to the music was a contributing factor in a busily frequented dance floor.

.

. From 10 p.m. Pete Lyster's first set encompassed dance music such as The Satisfactions - Take it or leave it to lesser known music for the more high brow connoisseurs of soul. Resident Danny North followed with a range of classics such as Carstairs - It really hurts me girl, mid-tempo sounds in the likes of Billy Hambric - She said goodbye to powerful upbeat oldies as in The Excitors - Blowing up my mind which were much appreciated. Mischief continued the theme with music from The Precisions, Chuck Jackson, Major Lance and Johnny Sayles. Needless to say, the night was going swimmingly well.

. Post mid-night, the second visits behind the decks of Mick Lioyd and Pete Lyster were as you'd expect from such notable guest players. Big hits with the crowd were The Flaming Emeralds - Have some everybody, Lester Tipton - This won't change, Parliments - This is my rainy day and the like.

.

. Mick Lloyd later on introduced himself and conversation led on to how his spots during his last visit to the uni contained more rarish RnB soul and this time around the flavour was more across the board. His theory was typical of many a D.J. caught between a rock and a hard place in determining a string of plays to satisfy an audience and yet stay true to where other avenues of underplayed soul should be explored.

. Mick made the familiar comment in that most punters only respond to what they know. I had to agree and that can be soul music that comes under the rare classification when the locals have had sufficient exposure, as has happened often at the former Bournemouth Railway Club. Consequently they've probably experienced one of today's big sought after plays by Eddie Parker - I'm gone and yet ironically they may have never heard Love You Baby, one of the biggest numbers played at The Torch and Casino Club.

. Folk will know I'm comun home in the Mornun and Cause your mine like the back of their hand, but they won't know Fat man (at the go-go). I find this a real contradiction when someone says that they remember the old days and Wigan, yet prevalant plays of the time such as Tracks to your mind - Sounds of Lane or Thank you baby (for loving me) - Soul Brothers Six are unknown to so many.

. The reverse syndrome can be much the same. Bob Snow and I talked about sharing much the same experiences in that we left the Northern Soul scene many moons ago, thinking we'd heard nearly everything there was to hear and then returning in recent years to realize that there was so much more music out there to catch up on. This is in the main down to the efforts of the purveyors of soul who keep bringing fresh sounding, quality soul music into the local arena. I hope it long continues!

. This leads me on to where the real academic work is done on a Saturday night at Bournemouth University. It's around a small seating/open area to one side and behind the decks and speakers which forms a quieter speak easy environment. The congregation in this part of the venue is frequented by D.J.s and record collectors, with many a philosophical word on the subject of soul being exchanged. Vinyl is sifted through and sometimes lifted out of the boxes and raised to the light.

. Sometimes minute details such as the etchings around the inner rim of the disc or even a small raised dimple can determine the authenticity of the piece. This is the world where the real knowledge at soul nights exist. It's a form of art collecting that has a real fascination for those addicted in the pursuit of that ellusive tune. That is, until they've tracked it down and purchased it and moved onto the next one.

. Speaking of which, I know that Dave Morris had recently returned with Vince Ayres from a record fare in Texas. He must have made quite a few acquisitions from this trip and yet, he unselfishly gives himself only half-an-hour to play out the end of yet another successful night On The Soul Side.

. It's a measure of his character when he gives up the core of the night to guests and fellow residents. It just goes to prove that it's not always about ego.

.

. Many Thanks, Dave & Jan Mortimore

The best Soul Night i had been to this year and for the reasons that the music was totally covering all genres of this wonderful music we all love and enjoy by djs that all had their own unique style and grasped what the punters wanted and yep they all delivered and some, was great to catch up with so many friends and meeting new ones too, i have heard all the djs play before except Pete Lyster and had only heard good things about before and knew i the night was going to be a goodun and it wasnt just a goodun it was superb with everything from classics to the rarest of the rare but most of all quality from start to finish and the dance floor the busiest ihave ever seen it before and the venue as busy if not busier that ive have known it to be before, all i can say is that this event really got it right and if someone can leave after a night like last night and say they didnt enjoy themselves then they must be tone bloody deaf, well done to Danny, Dave and their lovely ladies Viv & Mandy for all the hard work and effort to make this night a must not miss night so keep up the great work, well done Pete, Mick, Mr chicken feet Mischief, Danny & Dave for some great tuneage and an superb night, see you all next year for more of the same :-)))))
