First learned just under a year ago about Soul Sam pencilling this one in his very busy 70th Birthday year diary...Been looking forward to putting up the bunting in my home town since! Yep..Christmas is coming early to Rushden far as I'm concerned.

Great line up for the whole night and deserves to be nice n busy as it looks to be the last soul night there, after all the hard graft that I know has gone into this venue/night over recent years by Steve, Jem, Len & Co + the numerous well known guest DJ's you've had perform there.

If it's anything like last December's I'll be very happy indeed.

Steve.

Thanks for asking me Jem. What an honour to be able to "warm the kit up" for everyone on this special night, not least Soul Sam! Kids are counting down sleeps to Christmas...I'm counting down sleeps to 10th December!! Local printers are already working on my "I love Soul Sam" T-shirt.

Gawd, I hope Nina's booked the baby sitters!

Looking forward to it guys.

All the best,

P.s - Remember - No talc on Winston's side of the room folks! (You'll have to give me a wave to 'tuther' side of the room mate!) :)

I took Nina shopping for her Christmas pressy yesterday....ended up buying some leather soled shoes for myself, much to her discust lol - Well I've took folks on here's advice....Now watch me go *rse over t*t on that dance floor!

Win, if you wear your trainers 'yule' be stuck to that dance floor as if dancing on velcro, if I wear my new shoes, I'll be like Bamby on ice! ooo dear....

Whichever, we're sure to have a great night in store, see you then.

All the best,

Len.

Which is best on the Pembo dance floor, leather soles or trainers? Trainers or leather soles? There's only one way to find out. FIGHT!

Not the best plan Lenny, buying stuff for yourself when you're with your Mrs and meant to be buying her a present, lucky for you Nina is very understanding. If I wear trainers I'll be using talc,....... I've been converted :)

I'd like to say 'shoes polished, shirt pressed', but I'd be lying, I prefer the hobo look :) I am however looking forward to having a bit of a jig about, until that is, the lactic acid build up and the inevitable cramp :)

Well, I don't mind being first to post a comment after this Saturday night to say a big well done to all involved in making the last night at the Pembo one to remember...Steve/Jem/Len/Dave and especially to Soul Sam and all the great people who made the effort to attend. The bar staff too, it's fair to say, did a great job.

With the "Dopson" mini-bus arriving at 7, just as Jem and I arrived to switch the lights on (or was that off! lol) and then Len having to play a few first thing as I had to nip back home for a moment, I then really enjoyed playing a few from 7.30 until 8. Thanks again for that "treat"!

Steve was up next, then Jem, Dave Vanner, Steve again, then Len.....each playing some great records and getting the dance floor busier and busier as time went by. You could almost feel the expectation in the air as Sam then got on the stage around 11.15pm and as you'd expect, he skillfully / enthusiastically played some great modern dancers alongside well known and affordable classics peppered with a good dozen "OMG" rarities (if you know what I mean!). Jem and Steve then finishing the night off with much loved sounds which are now embedded within the walls of the Pembo from the last five years.

I certainly lost myself, absorbing a good few records on the floor in front of one of the huge speakers, and I could see many others doing the same. Aching feet and some marginal temporary loss of hearing this morning .... a good sign of a VERY good night!

All the best and Merry Christmas, Steve.

Was a very good night, danced a fair bit and I'm paying for it this morning. Great to see quite a few of the 'old crowd' there, always a pleasure to watch Panch dance. Len kept trying to intimidate me all night, with his new shoes, he's very attached, at one point I think he had a request played for them...........good sets from all the DJs, and Sam was just his usual immaculate self. Big up to Nina and her sewing skills, putting together Len's Budweiser shirt from beer mats was the work of a master seamstress :) :)

Coming back from the bar I accidently spilt some water on the dance floor and was about to curse when I realized it was where you were dancing Win! Phew! lol. Fabulous night, great to see the place packed but not once having to wait to get served by the friendly bar staff. Soul Sam was rightly the big draw and didn't dissapoint but for me all the dj's played blinding tunes which kept the floor moving. Great send off and I went home cream pembo'd! :)

"Soul Sam blows the Pembo away" is the headline...but firstly I would like to thank all those that did and have paid their money and attended the Pembo over the last 5 years,a great crowd who are always prepared to open their ears and give the music a chance...so many great records played over the years from djs that have travelled to this little part of england ...truly humbling, last night was....well you had to be there...thats all.But i have got to say thanks to the following ...my Wife for always supporting me and doing the door, Shane and Julia who have always ...been there! Len for clearing the room when needed, Steve Scotney for making a special journey for blu tack, Soul Sam... Starsky's car was a Ford Gran Torino... oh and Steve Brown ...thanks mate

I second that Jem. I was too tired and emotional to post yesterday but now the fog has cleared I would like to add my thanks to everyone that turned out to make this a night to remember! I had the pleasure of being Soul Sam's host for the weekend. What an education! His enthusiasm and knowledge impressed the hell out of me. He is a true gentleman. Let's hope he comes back to Northants soon.

As for the Pembo, the staff were fantastic and with the 1 o'clock finish made the night for me. After so many pleas for it to continue we are looking at maybe an annual event around Christmas so watch this space.

Hi Guys,

Yes it was a special night / full day " ËœTimes are a changingâ"žÂ¢ - Any soul night and some all-nighters struggle to get 200 plus in nowadays. No probs though, we just adjust things to suit to keep our hobby going. Iâ"žÂ¢m so pleased everyone made the effort to give The Pembo a good send off.

I said Ëœfull dayâ"žÂ¢ as I met Kimbo and his crowd - Shine head and Co at The George, Wilby for a pint at dinner time, it was so nice to hear them reminisce about the old times. The last time some of them were at The George was about 40 years ago. The manager kindly let them all go into the old function room where they took some photoâ"žÂ¢s etc and the memories came flooding back for them.

It was a pleasure to have a nice chat with Soul Sam as donâ"žÂ¢t often get chance at nighters as heâ"žÂ¢s always surrounded by ËœVinyl Junkiesâ"žÂ¢ :O) Great sense of humour and he understood my ËœIronyâ"žÂ¢ (Unless he was just being polite, the gent that he is)

As Win said, it was lovely to have the “Old Crowdâ"žÂ¢ back together again and in our hearts we were all thinking of our good friend Chantel.

Thanks Jem and Steve for asking me to be involved in The Pembo, I will look back with fond memories.

All the best,

Len.

P.s - Thanks also to Steve Scotney for his help of late and for being a great 'leveller'

Well the weekend over what can i say the pembo went out with a major bang was anticpating a great night when the d.j line up was first announced last year ,and we were not disappointed, arriving just before 9pm we where met by the sight of a room that was buzzing with anticipation we where pleased to see so many people who we knew the sounds were being spun by jem when we arrived playing classics from across the years next up dave vanner playing a mixture of lesser known tunes and quality rareties up next was steve brown who kept the momentum up with a mixture of current spins a few modern bits and a touch of r& b, steve was followed by lenny who played some qualty mid tempo and cross over sounds with a few big rareties to add to the mix. the time was 11.15 and the main attraction was about to take too the deck, i had spoken with sam earlier in the night and told him i had d.j.d at the pembo in october and the crowd were responsive to modern he asked what i had played and told him he would have no problem playing what he would at any other event he d.j's at so on with sam's spot we were not disappointed he played a great mix of modern big rareties unknowns and a couple of classic oldies to add to the mix . the floor was busy all night with a great atmosphere to finish the night was jem and steve playing classics too round of a top night . the pembo will be missed but not forgotten, well done guy's for a great five years . forward and onward to your next venture

Thanks to you all for what turned out to be a weekend instead of a night, it was great to meet you at the George, also a big thanks to Gilly and Nichola, nice suprise. Great company all weekend Lofty n shell, Kimbo n Lisa, Mel n Pat great time. As we know Mr Barnfarther always delivers and he sure did that, you local boys supported him brilliantly. It was really good of the Ibis staff to put on a live show of The Flower Pot men and show such interest in vinyl.

Be good

Prob not the done thing to post twice on a "look back" but reading the above tonight reminded me of a couple more moments which made me laugh on the night and are maybe worth posting before I forget...

1. Soul Sam up on the stage after Len played a cover up (which followed September Jones I think) and Len looking for a moment like he jokingly wasn't sure whether to tell Sam what it was or not...How can you deny SOUL SAM such things!!lol

2. Steve apologising to Sam and Len on the mike before he played a couple of R&B requests half way through his second spot (which did keep the floor very busy by the way!)

3. Sam playing a great soulful house 12" early in his set (surely at first at the Pembo?) and seeing so many dance hard to it, me included. More please....There IS room for such things at more Northern Soul nights if done properly and as a small percentage of what gets played.

4. Jem closing at the end and saying on the mike, just as lights were going on and one more LAST record also about to go on...something like "Thanks to everyone for coming and making a great night & for supporting the Pembo over the years......I love you all........but not in an intimate way...I don't have the time"!

Guess you had to be there, but there ya go anyway.

Steve

the reason the pembo was so successful for five years is that all gernes of our music were played in one room just like the great venues of the past no second or third room just one main hall catering for everyone .venue promoter take note this is the way to do it

Just to add my own thanks to Steve, Jem and Len for the great nights I've had at the Pembo over the years, and the crackin' send off do. I was very pleased to still be on the floor at the end being told by Jem to go home!

Soul Sam's set was a stormer and like 71 Steve said it was 'a moment' when he pulled out those edgy 12"s and we wondered how the crowd would react, but I for one loved it and so did many on the dancefloor. Dave, Jem, Steve and Len played the usual excellent sets. Thanks to Jem for spinning David Ruffin 'You Can Come Right Back to Me' - new one on me and a great one for the box soon.

Look forward to the spirit of The Pembo living on at The Bowl and Snooks in 2012 and to supporting you there of course.

All the best,

Paul Bedwell

Finally got onto my computer - I would like to say what a great atmosphere there was when I arrived at the Pembo at about 8:45pm. This has always been one of my favourite venues since I was introduced to it by Johnny (Red Pants) Warren and had the pleasure of meetingt Jem, Steve and the crew. The whole night was brilliant and although I had been in Soul Sam's company the night before at Newark he didn't dissapoint and played a storming set, completely different from the night before. Everyone else played great sets as well of course! Hopefully will see Len tonight in Grantham.

Good luck with the new venue in the new year and I hope everyone has a great Christmas.
