Mike, the ** were there to remind folk that this is a 2 Star Venue, which means we usually have running water and electricity...sometimes from the same pipes!

It's looking as though Thorsten may not be able to join us after all.....he was coming down to Bidds after DJing at NWO in Manchester first, but he's now got his missus in tow and wants to be all loved up in a hotel room whilst away from the kids....bless.

Have a few plans in place to replace him.....will update with more details once confirmed.

Hi Nils, Thorsten can't make it to Bidds now unfortunately, so I won't be seeing him this weekend.

He is a great guy, and unfortunately (for me) way too fast in record shows......though he showed signs of slowing down @ the last Allentown....which was nice :wicked:

I have advised him to take some time out from such a hectic lifestyle and spend more time at home with his young family, perhaps you could convince him that this is surely the best thing for him to do :D:lol:

spent most of the time scratching me head last night trying to figure out why there wer'nt more people there with a dj line up as good as this.the music was top draw for me last night, couldnt fault any of the sets.so why the poor turn out can anyone enlighten me please as to why this is.

We talked about this last night John and I still can't understand it. However I still had an excellent night. DJs did themselves proud, and delivered great sets.

I don't know why a huge chunk of the regular nighter faces were missing last night.....Bidds is the most open-minded and progresive nighter in the UK with great DJs playing great music on a quality sound system. It should have been packed.

I never fail to enjoy it and had another good one last night, it was fantastic musically with standout sets from john and Mace for me.To echo the sentiments of Adam, its the most progressive nighter in the country, with an amazing variety of music, in such an authentic venue, long may it reign. I just think that in 5 or 10 years there will be hundreds of scenesters saying, ' I went to Bidds'. Looking forwads to the dates for next year.

Kev, I honestly don't expect anyone to have to give reasons, apologies or excuses for not making it last night.....

Yes, last nights numbers were the lowest ever for the Allnighters at Bidds.

Whilst I expected low numbers in October due to so many other nighters being on, I expected a much better turnout this time....but the end result proved to be quite the opposite.

Lots of reasons can be offered, lack of finances, weather, glut of events etc etc...but I think maybe we've just run our course.

I've always viewed this nighter as having it's own stand alone identity because of the many mixed genres of 60s soul that we try to cover....and whilst I appreciate that some of those genres are not too everybodies taste (Latin probably being a prime example) I had a strong belief that there should be enough like-minded folk out there to stir enough interest for 4 or 5 events a year.

After the poor attendance figures of the last 2 events, I'm now not so convinced.

We've certainly had some great nighters at Bidds over the last 6 years, the ones in March & May this year were amongst our best ever......but I honestly don't know if I can stomache watching next years dates detoriate any further than last night.

I have every faith in NYE being every bit as good as last year, especially with having Lifeline and Kindred Soul joining the promotion to see in 2012.....but what happens after NYE remains to be seen.... I certainly don't foresee the event continuing in it's current format.

To everyone who travelled incredible distances last night in such horrendous fog I salute you, as well as all the DJs who had a hard nights work but still played wonderful sets.

Regards

Mace

Despite the low turnout I had a great night, great music in a great allniter venue with wonderful friendly people. (Hello to those I met & those I already knew :hatsoff2: )

Thanks Mace & Des for the opportunity to play some tunes & for the lift up & those who made kind comments on my sets.

After what will surely be a great NYE at Bidds hopefully things will look a little brighter for the new year Mace. Despite only being a few times I love it there, brilliant friendly club & for sure i'll make more of an effort next year.

all best

Totally agree mate--as ya know I was previously engaged---but would have been there in a flash otherwise. It aint comfy, it aint posh, it aint 'easy' BUT it is 'scene' built on the true foundations of what us old buggers recognise what we first got into it. Learning about 'new' sounds, hearing sounds dug up from the past, hearing sounds that are 'given a go' on the strength of the DJ's passion for the music...meeting people from all over who 'get' what its about and maybe some who dont but still recognise summats 'going on' and want to be a part of it

How ironic---- that its really quite 'nostalgic'

..anyway glad to hear the tunes were the 'dogs' again ---and I want a full report Geese lad lol

well chaps i for one had a great time and people should take note if they dont attend another venue will fall by the wayside and probably end up being used for an oldies night.

Bidds is a great venue full of great peoople and DJs who are still all punters which is one of the trhings that makes it such a good night.

As John Weston said, people were asking 'where everyone was' and I was one of them, a lot a familiar faces were missing that you'd normally expect to be there, I honestly think these folks will be back in attendance again, I hope so anyways as a lot of us don't want to lose this back to the grass roots nighter.

Couldn't fault the music that was being played, brilliant sets by all the dj's who in my opinion did the business, I've never danced so much in ages, some of the tunes just grabbed you and off on the floor you went, heard some great new stuff that was new to my ears and that's what Bidds is renowned for.... progressive up front soul .

Mace, whatever happens you can hold your head high, you had a game plan, stuck to your guns and brought something into the soul scene that was badly needed, a big pat on the back from me mate :hatsoff2:.

Respect

Willie

Dave G, it was nice to meet you and enjoyed our chat .

Hello Mace,

I was not able to get there pal but keep your head up.

My own opinion?

Too many variables at the moment:

economy especially petrol for the travellers,

other events not necessarily on the same night but within 2 weeks either side,

xmas coming up

and agree with Doc... smaller membership only venues to sort the real deal nighter people

Will see you soon matey

I think that there were fifty plus events listed on SS for Saturday and not much short of that for Friday. The weather was horrid for driving once the fog arrived.....Christmas is near and we are in the worst recession since the 30s......

I guess therefore nothing to do with your DJs or your music policy.....

Mace,

Bidd's is not my thing, i think by now you and most on here know this, but you cannot just throw in the towel.

I travelled on Sat to Sheffield Sam's, it had some of the country's top oldies and Rare soul dj's on the decks and the attendance was poor - 150ish - so it's not your music policy that you should be doubting as these two events are opposites and would not take numbers from each other, the prob in my opinion is the LACK of nighters!! and the flooding on the scene of local soul night's......far to many for the amount of soul's around.

So with the stuff that's been mentioned already as to reason's why Sat was pant's and with xmas around the corner, big weekender just past us, it can only be down to one thing Mace and that's the shortage of cash, NOT YOUR VENUE!!

That said i don't suppose for one minute you can stand to keep losing on nighters, it's a tough call Mace but i'm sure it will turn itself around for you.

ATB.

Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and views etc...all are appreciated.

I do take on board that Xmas is approaching and there's no money about for lots of folk.

I also realise that finances and risng fuel costs has the knock on effect that people are being more choosy about where they go each month, and how often they go out.

I knew from the off that the nighters at Bidds were never gonna be an easy event to promote, and very little chance of having regular, if any packers....... the music policy and the venues 'facilities' etc were always gonna go against the grain with the majority of the nighter crowd.

That's why I wanted to run it the way I have, so hopefully attracting enough passionate like-minded misfits from the Northern, Mod and R&B scenes to generate the right atmosphere to break unknowns, reactivate forgottens and include genres that get little or no turntable action from the majority of the rest of the Nighter scene....as Willie rightly said, I had a gameplan.

We've had a decent success rate to date, and as I said have run Bidds for nigh on 6 years as a nighter.

The finances are not a major concern to be honest, small losses are usually balanced by similar profits over the year....I don't run it to generate any income ( it would make me a p*sspoor businessman!)

Mind you, I ain't adverse to wasting any profits on yet more records...so you take the swings with the roundabouts.

Most of my resident DJs can also be very flexible in any times of need...we are all singing from the same hymn sheet at the end of the day.

So finances aside, the event needs enough like-minded folk to generate the atmosphere to play the records we want to play and get the dancefloor recognition we believe they deserve.

Without enough of these folk, the whole point of running the night is redundant......I could of course relax the music policy but then I'm only gonna be doing similar to other events and what's the point in doing that.

I suppose it's a self indulgance of mine, as I get to hear the sort of music I wanna hear at a nighter, all night.

I'd be gutted to jack it in, but I'm more gutted to see such poor support for such great music.....and of course, I suppose I should be grateful that we've carried it off for 6 years.

I'm certainly grateful to those who have travelled ridiculous miles to support this event over those years...........like-minded misfits indeed!

Got to agree with previous posts. Bidds is the most progressive Niter in the country.

I hear more tunes new to my ears,on any given night, than any other Niter.

Still had a cracking night Saturday, although numbers were down and all Djs were

excellent and kept the floor till 7am

Keep up the good work Mace

Bidds has always been a must attend niter for me and that's all down to you Mace .

As for any relaxation of the music policy no need for that one, its progressive and thats the reason why like minded punters rate it high in the niter stakes.

The place oozes character along with the attendees and great staff both bar and door, always welcoming and friendly where else do the door staff have the odd dance cos its grt dance music .

The decor has been the topic of many fun post but that's just Bidds for you.

As for atmosphere it has been quite electric at times with many a packed floor.

Yes a bit of Latin Banged out by Mr Beggs with a passion, you will travel far to find a more enthusiastic fella at 5am in the morning behind the decks.

Well its all sounds like a bloody good Game Plan to me long may it last.

You have my support Mace and thanks for a grt niter.

See ya all on the dance floor New Year.

Atb Irish.

P.S I do believe there is a smaller setup next door but in a poor state of repair if you ever went down the line as suggested by Dr Pickles is that an option worth looking at .

im not sure about the smaller room argument, i think smaller rooms lead to smaller crowds as it becomes a self fullfilling prophecy.

I think as I have probably said before to much info on the internet and the will to travel to hear new tunes is the factor.

When i got into this I had no money, I still have no money you make sacrifices and make do.

Stick with it Mace.

Got to disagree Roddy.

Better to have a smaller room with 50 - 100 hardcore nighter people bouncing off the walls, 20 people on the dancefloor and it looking full, a buzzing record bar and people banging on the door to be let in .

Put the same 100 people in a big hall for 300+ and you can watch the atmosphere pour out of the door.

Well, that took a while to get over!! Any one who has already posted feedback is not partying hard enough! ;-)

Musically Great (Beggsie SUPERB!!) and socially great- I could've done with a few more people to annoy but it did not detract from being a great niter!!

Mace; Bidds is great (the music, people and venue) - please don't be too hasty - Bidds MUST go on!! There's a lot of decent niters every weekend after each other at the moment and not all folk can't do them all with costs being what they are nowadays etc.

I feel like saying 'great' again...Bidds was Great! :-)

Well i had a nice time ! Although with the many different genres played there, one would expect a busy house everytime.Bidds isn't exactly the largest venue and certainly shouldn't have to down size - I tend to agree with Roddy's post ,the very reason venue's like Bidds are suffering is because of the ridiculous amount of smaller venues each fooling themselves that they're doing something different, when in truth they are stroking each others cocks and severely short changing the punters with sub standard dj's playing sub standard records... why run your own venue when it's already put on for you ? save yourself a headache ,let mace have the headache !

So what are you saying ... that Mace should be given the privilege of stroking everyoneâ"žÂ¢s cock for them...heâ"žÂ¢d really hate that LOL!!

Right, had a few weeks to get me head around things and retrieve me dummy from wherever I spat it!

My next event after NYE would be the 6th Anniversary of the niters at Bidds, and I now feel it would only be fitting to give this event one more go on this landmark date and make my decision on the fate of it's future on the result of that night, so the 6th Anniversary will now go ahead on March 17th as planned.

I also have a few ideas which include combined promotions with other events that may give more mass appeal to this venue without watering down or selling out the 60s Rare Soul music policy.....that may or may not occur sometime in May/June..... but as yet is still only a concept and nowt rigid.

So March 17th for the 6th Anniversary it is then.

Apologies if anyone took one in the eye from my flying dummy....just remember to duck quicker come mid March just in case......
