 Really looking forward to this one!

It's been while since I last graced the decks so there's tons of stuff I need to play. Something for everyone I hope. Needless to say my taste has changed somewhat - along with the contents of my box (otherwise I wouldn't have been invited along), so it's gonna be a real pleasure to get away from the same old tunes and predictable requests.

Well done for keeping this going guys, and congratulations on your first Anniversary.

This is gonna be one hell of a cracking night not just musically but sociably too, loads of regulars and defo a good few first timers attending what simply is the most exciting soul night musically in the South by a country mile, all djs are attendees and know what Ghetto Soul is all about and that is simply to play exciting tunes you just dont hear out very often but have that WOW factor, the WOW factor is what the dj beleives that tune to be and if you come along you will see the djs having the time of their lives cos the shackles are off and they can express themselves without the pressure of having to fill the dance floor with garaunteed floor fillers but DONT be fooled by that cos the dance floor gets loads of action and all djs are more than happy to share their tunes and spread the knowledge and sounds to the soulies that have took the plunge and given us a go and i can honestly say that i think 99% have so far enjoyed what we have endeavered to offer and will keep putting on offer as a soul night to stand out on its own musically and sociably in the Soulful South of England ......................

see you there if your tired of the same old same old you wont be dissapointed i promise ..............

Thanks for the warm welcome... SSC.

An excellent night all-round great tunes great atmosphere, and a knowledgeable crowd.

Defo gave me the inspiration to play some off the stuff languishing at the back of my box, some of these tunes played out sound amazing....

Congratulations for having the courage of your convictions...

The music was spot on all evening a truly diverse across the board mix, well done to all the dj's!! you could tell they were playing the music they love and not just out to impress..

We all enjoyed it and will be back.

And the cup cakes? They were Awesome !!!!

Thanks again

.

. We had intended to arrive earlier to get the most from the resident guest spots. However, we were delayed and as we climbed the stairs to the venue at 9.20 p.m. to the deep vibrations of a stomping beat, rhythmic horns and the deep vocals of B.B.Brown belting out, "Lord have mercy! You called me a low down dirty tramp!" We knew that we had missed the best of Mr.Smithers set.

. Sallie Reynolds confirmed matters with the statements, "Dave, you've missed some great music!" - "He played my namesake Church street Sallie just after I came through the doors. - Fantastic!" Knowing Sallie, if she had been impressed, then true to recent form Tim would have taken no prisoners in his approach. Non of the gentle soul fodder to gradually warm folk up, more like Blow your socks off beat music much akin to the funk-edged Rare Soul niter scene.

.

. It wasn't long before Bearsy followed on with some mid-tempo lesser played favourites such as The Celebrities - I choose you and others new to my ears as with The Intentions - I'm losing your love. These were skillfully interdispersed with the odd gutsy sounding tune as in Rudy Love - Sufferin' Wrath. The righful response being varying waves of folk taking to the dancefloor. Tim & Bearsy had certainly warmed up the proceedings leading up to the focal point of the night and that always is the delivery of the guest players.

. First off the rank, Steve Snow played to the script with plenty of music I'd never encountered before. It was a time for listening and deciphering the presence of each new tune. Funnily enough, the odd one that didn't float my boat drew out a response on the dance floor. Whereas there were others that either contained good Northern Soul rifts or were of a tempo that I rightfully should have danced to. One that I did manage to note down was Bearcat - Cecil & The Fascinators.

.

. Kevin Kent entered with Stagger Lee & Billy - Ike & Tina Turner. Here and there Kevin delivered some locally underplayed sounds as in The Lovemasters - Pushin & Pullin, Brothers of Soul - Hurry don't linger and a slightly different version of Dickie Wonder - Nobody knows, which were well received on the floor. But the highlight of the night for me and I'm sure for others, was much of the other music he brought to the table. To name a couple, The Conquistadores - Can't stop lovin' you, Master Four - Love from the Far East and another I'm sure I've heard once before from Dave Abbot during the All-nighter at Bumbles in Bournemouth earlier this year. Finally I managed to clock it to find out that it was Oz & The Sperlings - Somebody to love. Bob Snow mirrored my thoughts at the time when I asked him if he was enjoying the night? - " You know what Dave, I've heard alot of really good music that's completely new to me." - " I've sat and listened to them this time, but the next time some of these tunes are played out I'll definitely be dancing to them." The thing is Bob, Will there be a next time? For in truth, many of these notable plays rarely see the light of day locally.

.

. Much to his credit, our host Alfie is trying to change this and bring out fresh music through the experimental platform of Ghetto Soul. Hopefully, we'll reap the rewards with Southern soul nights that evolve more so through the take up of pieces of music from this venue.

. I think the open minded people that attend this night fully appreciate what Alfie is trying to achieve by enhancing the relatively unknown, unexploited wide spectrum of rare and underplayed soul.

.

. Dave Goldswain took us through much of the final hour, beginning with the likes of Joe Tex - Close the door. Half a dozen records in, he decided to change tack and played some established music as in The Exits - Gotta have money, Clifford Curry - Ain't no danger and a big oldie from The Torch, A little bit of somethin' - Little Richard. Maybe Dave felt that he needed to entertain by filling the floor, which is what resulted. Here and there he did revert back to convention with The Poets - I've got two hearts, Johnny Taylor - Zig Zag lightning and such like during his varied set before handing over to Alfie to bring a successful 1st anniversay night to a close.

.

. It was a time for hugs, handshakes and farewells until our next reunion as folk departed.

.

. I had to thank Tracey Shaw for the cakes. One wasn't enough, so I had Jan's share to boot. They were exquisite. If she can drum up such delites, then it amazes me how her chap can remain so slender? I certainly wouldn't have the same will-power.

.

. Bearsy was continuing the night with a soul session with others back at his and Marie's new abode. Unfortunately we were just a little too tired.

.

. We look forward to returning to Totton Conservative Club on New Year's Eve when the large main room is being opened for a big night that welcomes the inclusion of Ted Massey.

.

. Many Thanks Ruth & Alfie, Dave & Jan Mortimore

Those kind words are appreciated Dave. I should correct you though, as "Stagger Lee & Billy" was Steve Snow's final spin and I commenced with Rufus Wonder. An understandable mistake as both Steve and I were at the decks.

I've been waiting for a couple of others to post, as for readers to gain an unbiased impression of any night it's preferable that the promoter and dj's don't start bigging it up from the onset. It was some months ago when I visited Ghetto Soul. Living in Kent but hailing from the Midlands, most of my travelling is spent in a northerly direction. In my own mind, with it's close proximity to the Isle of Wight, I had always associated this area with a closely related scene and it's various rallys. Then Bearsy and Alfie enticed me along to Ghetto soul and I realised that I'd been making a big mistake!

The upstairs venue is small - I'd forgotten how small - but cosy and perfect for the night. I really enjoy these smaller venues and the atmosphere that comes with them. The dancefloor is small but adequate and as the night isn't about filling the floor (though it often does), then the space doesn't detract from the general ambience when folks choose to listen or just catch up with old mates.

I'll admit that it was with some apprehension that I aproached the decks. Since giving up a residency I've found that the dj invites have dried up, and it's been almost 18 months since I got to play out anywhere, so I felt a little rusty. I also knew that Dave Mortimore provides probably the most honest and detailed reviews on soul-source and that I valued his opinion. I needn't have worried, Ghetto Soul is a no pressure environment for dj's so just do "what it says on the tin" and a good reception will follow. Right up my street then!

:g: Is the venue full of chin-strokers and rare soul aficionados? Certainly not! - but I would wager that the regular local attendees are becoming more attuned to what they are hearing and more appreciative of it. A chap outside (smoke break) asked me to play countless tunes that you would hear just about anywhere. His final words were "What about Etta James 7 Day Fool - it's a rare soul nite and they all play that!" He later spent much of the night dancing to tunes he'd probably never heard before. This is the South Coast ... and the tide is changing!

 Apologies again to Dave Goldswain for my departure some 15 minutes before the end of his set. Having been at Coventry for the Brothers Of Soul, I'd ended my set with Hurry, Don't Linger, as a tribute. A couple of hours later and I was dancing to it at the 100 Club courtesy of a like minded Sean Hampsey.

Thanks again to Alfie and Ruth, and of course to their partners in crime Bearsy and Tim Smithers, for providing a different sort of night that will I'm sure go from strength to strength.

:hatsoff2: - Kev Kent

EDIT: Sorry about the lack of paragraphs, and spacing etc, as this hasn't appeared as I wrote it and I'm not doing it again!

No smileys either. What's going on?! sorted I hope

Have to agree with Richie,

really good night, lots of new tunes to my ears anyway, absolutely the ideal setting for a rare and underplayed night, well worth the trip down from Oxford.Bearsy playing Papa Bear and the cubs made my evening(only just got a copy myself),meeting Alfie and the rest of the team, not having seen Kevin Kent for a long while then meet up twice in two weeks.

anyone who really enjoys something a bit different, give Ghetto soul a try its very refreshing and you could'nt meet a more friendly crowd.

Must congratulateTracy on the catering, unfortunately never got a chance to try any of the cakes as Richie and Del are a bit quicker than me,so there the story ends.

Once again thanks for a smashing night.

Weekend over and brian sort of back in gear again so a few words from myself about Ghetto Souls 1st Anniversary,

Arrived just before the start to have Alfie a tad stressed as his new speakers had a problem, well one of them and with Alfie being very consciuos about the sound system he reverted back to the ususal ones he normally uses and yet again a great sound system doing the tunes the justice they deserve, the room filled up very quickly and soon had a great atmosphere and got quite warm wuite quickly with Alfie starting off with a great varied set followed by Tim and his usual kind of set then followed by me with a mix of everything from tunes played at Ghetto before and first time Ghetto Plays then it was time to hand over to Steve followed by Kev then finishing the night off Goldie and a curtain call from Alfie, lots of regulars and a few new faces in what was a decent turn out but still room for a few more, too many peeps to name but you know who you are and we really apprecite the support and really hope you all had a great night and got your monies worth of soulful entertainment :-))))))))

thanks to everyone from the djs to all the dancers and listeners and of course Alfie for having the balls to put this night on in the South of England and word is getting out and peeps are starting to take notice and that will help this Night grow and bring something new to the scene down here so if you had a great time spread the word and hopefully see you all agin very soon maybe even in January :-)))))

my plays to get the atmoshpere going from 9-40 to 10-30

Eddy Giles - Losing boy

Calvin Arnold - I think i better rest

Roy Roberts - You move me

Papa Bear & Cubs - You`re so fine

Celebrities - I choose you baby

Oscar Weathers - just to prove i love you

Puzzles - My sweet baby

International GTO`s - I love my baby

The Intentions - Im losin your love

The Intensions - Feel so good

Majestees - Take back all those things

Curtis Liggins - What it is

Richard Cook - Somebody got`a help me

Wess & the Airdales - I`ll never turn my back on you

Rudy Love - Suffering wrath

Joe McLean - Lets talk about love

Winfield Parker - Starvin

Clarence Murray - Lets get on with it

Gene Redding - You`ve gotta have soul

William Cummings - Make my love a hurting thing - for Kev lololol

hopefully this gives anyone interested in maybe coming to Ghetto Soul the type of tuneage that could get played,

once again thanks to all that was there on Saturday for a great night, the after party wasnt oo bad either :-)))))

We've been wanting to get down to this night since it's start and it all came together on Saturday.

I think this is how I want most of my soul fix now:

Small venue

Low ceiling

Upfront / uptempo tunes - most new to my ears

Excited peeps who want to be there

Friends old and new

DJ's who are excited to play their tunes.

I got all that in spades on Saturday night and more. I did not like everything played, sometimes I was the only one on the floor, other times you could not swing a cat on there. If you are going to push some bounderies then that is how it should be.

Thanks to all for making us welcome and especially to Bearsy and Marie for looking after us before the trip back West.

Great to meet Kev and even more splendid tunes after the main event.

And yes the cakes were excellent even though I could not eat mine until 3.00pm on Sunday.

Top night

Doc
