. Where ever we venture to an event with an 'Across The Board' headlining policy, we all know that the goal posts can move around depending primarily on the delivery of the guest players. My recent observations of university soul nights have witnessed, through popular demand, an ever growing segment of 70s / Crossover sounds being adopted into proceedings.
. Certainly during the back end of Ian Spittle's first set and through Gary Samways initial offerings there was a flavour of Modern style music. Apart from a couple or so tunes that have seen their time in the sun as in Sergio Mendez - Love music and the James Walsh Gypsy Band - Cuz it's you girl, I couldn't really put a name to many of them.
. Danny North followed with the mid-tempo numbers Betty Lloyd - I'm catching on and Billy Hambric - She said goodbye before delivering a fair proportion of light feeling 70s soul in line with demands from the dance floor.
. Mischief's set was more in line with an Across The Board approach which drew out the busiest response of the night with mid- tempo Northern Soul numbers from Ann Sexton and Chuck Jackson to the classic Carstairs - It really hurts me girl and the occasional return to the general theme in The Spinners - I just want to fall in love.
.
. Ian Spittle's 2nd set began with Lee Fields - Take me back before resorting to some notable off the beaten track crossover. Gigi by Talmadge Armstrong being one that I had managed to clock. Then there were pieces that swung too close to club music for my liking. Drizabone - Can't take the pressure being an example.
. Gary Samways dabbled with Northern tunes as in The Masqueraders - I got the power and Frank Dell - He broke your game wide open, but it was the modern tunes like Virgil Henry - You ain't saying nothing new and The Jones - Is the getting still good that were striking more of a chord with the crowd.
. I observed alot of flowing movement on the floor throughout much of Ian's and Gary's final offerings when there was that special intuitive, spontaneous symbiosis between D.J. and dance floor.
.
. I feel that Dave Morris made an effort to rebalance things during his final half hour to end the night. Playing some RnB soul, Northern Soul as in Carl Carlton - I can feel it, The Precisions - Such Misery and stompers like Johnny Sayles - I can't get enough and Al Wilson - Help me. He pulled in a 70s request for Anne Snow with the uplifting Leon Ware - What's your name and then a final blast with Gene Chandler - There was a time before delivering some mid-tempo tunes to ease down and end with the soulful Esther Phillips - Just say goodbye.
.
. For much of the night I couldn't get into the flow of things. There was too much of a flavour from the mid to late 1970s Blackpool Mecca and I believe, the lighter side to the music from 1980s Stafford for my tastes. Never the less, there were plenty of people who came to enjoy this style of music, for the dance floor kept rolling along and judging by some of the Cheshire Cat demeanors, the £1.50 for a pint of Carlsberg was making a few of the onlookers extremely content.
.
. Thanks Dave, Danny and Viv plus guests Gary and Ian.
