As this will be the last Torch Reunion Malc, Jez and PD organise before it moves to the Queens Theatre Burslem in 2012. under the guidance of THE original Torch supremo Chris Burtion.

We started off by asking the lads how did the idea all come about..

Malc Burton…“The idea came about as a result of a very tongue in cheek comment , and as a result , flesh was put on the bones of that idea.

The " idea " for a Torch Reunion came about after I had originally been talking to a friend , who had missed The Torch but was a devout Casino attendee . We got talking of what now was on the site of it - the Casino Cafe - and I had heard that the pilgrims that go there are reported to dance around the tables , whilst waiting for their Back Drop Burger and Chips .

I made the tounge in cheek comment after that of " if they can dance around tables in a cafe in a shopping centre , I ought to get a marquee put up on a joiner's car park in Tunstall, Stoke ".

As you , Jez and I know , it was conceived as a reunion for the people who attended , bringing them together to celebrate the place and the music . It had to have an authentic" feel " about the venue , and be as near to Hose St as possible.

From that , the seeds for the harvest were sown , and some months later the harvest were successfully brought in.”

How and why was the Ryan Hall picked as the venue?

Malc Burton...I asked Paul Donnely to help me as he had been involved in the big Peterborough Reunion nights and he suggested the Ryan Hall as it was within walking distance from Hose Street he also suggested we should have a man on the patch so to speak and Paul approached Jez Jones from Biddulph.

Jez Jones...“As an avid 'Torchite' from back in the day---the opportunity to co-promote the Torch Reunions', with Malc and Paul, was a chance I couldn't pass up.

As everyone who has promoted an event will testify, its not an easy job. There is always something that has the potential to 'throw a spanner in the works' and these Torch Reunions have certainly had their ups and downs to put it mildly, but I can honestly say Its been a labour of love and an absolute privilige to work with Malc and Paul and all the others who have had some input into the project.

Most of all though, and yes it does sound corny, its the people that have made this all worthwhile. The people who have supported the event, the people who have got on board with the 'ethos' of the thing and the people who have dragged their not so young derrieres from all corners of the Uk and beyond--on an often damp, grey Autumnal day to Tunstall one of Arnold Bennetts 'Five Towns' which though appearing run-down, retains a character, grit and resilience, so befitting of its visitors for this pilgramage to what can only be described as 'The greatest little soul club in the world'

Meeting freinds I haven't seen for years, making new friendships that I can truly say will last a lifetime and bringing people together to reminisce, debate, chat about that 'golden period' in our music and scene--the early 70's in Tunstall. The memories from these reunions will linger on forever, side by side with those halycon days and nights of youth, spent worshipping at the altar of the Soul Scene that was the Golden Torch in Hose St.

..and finally I cannot express the joy and pride it has given me that WE as a group of people have come together ,put our hands in our pockets, and donated so generously to the charites. We have come together in very hard economic times and proudly we have given over the last two reunions an incredible £4500 plus this years donations.

Be proud of yourselves you've made the 'spirit' of a car park in Hose St Stoke on Trent come alive once again”

Basford?...ONCE MORE UNTO THE BREACH DEAR FRIENDS.....

So why the last one guys?

Paul Donelly…"we were only ever going to do one however the amount of calls we had re “whens the next one” has kept us motivated to do another and another, but it’s time now to let go and give the reunion back to the man who let it all happen in the first place.

Thank you to EVERYONE who made the Ryan Hall Torch reunions such a humbling experience.

Cya all at Basford for one final inky dinky"

PS…

Alan Day has agreed to join us all as he used to say “come on then”

iTS THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN FOLKS WHERE GROWN MEN AND WOMEN START GETTING A LITTLE BIT SILLY DOWN STOKE WAY ....

..Although not in Tunstall--this is a bigger venue so more of us can act a little bit silly. Alan Day's gonna spin a few and Chris Burton's gonna pop down and see us---all we need to do is track down any relatives of the Hose St Hoss--and we're well on our way...........

very kind of ya Nige---just 3 blokes doing summat in memory of 'the greatest little soul club in the world'

Anyway yeah this is the last one--and we do hope people enjoy it as much as the first 2. Ya cant recreate the TORCH in 2011--all ya can do is try and bring together as many old Torchites and people that enjoy Torch music together in a place to celebrate it and hopefully ensure that people have a 'stonkin' time doing it

Chris Burton takes the baton now and will run the Reunion in Burslem next April.

Chris will join us in Basford on Saturday and am sure will be so pleased to see so many ex Torchites and people that just love the great music that was played...come up and shake his hand---its his bloody fault we still talking/doing this rubbish lol heheheheehehehe. Grown men and women should know better!! lol

...Oh and a final mention--we chuffed as **** that Alan Day is gonna join us and spin a few...again a top top fella from the early days of our scene

...right people have said you cant top Ryan Hall----maybe yes maybe no------BUT WE'RE SURE GONNA TRY ONE LAST TIME

see ya on Saturday

What a fab day/night this turned out to be. Got some fab pictures which will try and put up later when the brain cells start to get back to normal.

So many legends in the room along with Torch and non Torch goers. I think this venue was much better than the other venue. Plenty of seating a good size dancefloor and warm cozy intimate feel about the place.

Lovely to see those triplets Julian , Bruce and Chris again having such a great time it was a joy to watch their enjoyment. Loved my private dance Julian , you have still got it mate , Top dog or what , how could you fail dancing to Alexander Patton.

Lovely to see up and coming Holday mates too getting excited about our little excursion to Spain at the end of the week for some fun time in the Costa's

Chrissie and I were talking about how nice it would be if you had a magic wand and tapped three times and all those people in that room metamorphasized into how they looked all those years ago... what a great scene that would make in a film !

My trophy of the night is capturing the three amigos FrankElson , Chris Burton and Barmy Barry , that was a special moment

Do you know I quite forgot how damn good those Torch records were , I get a bit absorbed in my quest to hear the unknown and I so often hear the top 50 " Soul night Faves " that I forget the roots that got me where I am today .

I felt most humbled watching those Djs play with such passion. And it brings it home to me how little I actually hear these different older sounds that we do generalize and percieve as being under the "oldies" banner.

I think we need to in future change the same old Oldies phrase to be the same soulnight expectations, because there are oldies out there that I would put money on being newies to many.

Not getting into toggle land too deep but you really do wonder why a lot of these records are missed in the play when something like for example Emporer of my babys heart as a staple week in week out play that could do with a rest IMO , lets change them around now and then and venture out of what we know works because I am sure loads of these "Northern backbone" tunes are not known to the soul night audience.

OK back on track

My shock was seeing what I percieved as a very quiet man turn into such a party animal , bit of a John Wayne all guns blazing behind the decks and that was Johnny Beggs. My god what a presence . I was gob smacked , but then I had never seen him play before.

My tune of the night was Clarence Murry - Don't talk like that wowwwwwwwwww that sounded awesome LOUD I think Ian played it or maybe Jez ? loved dancing to Tina Turners pleas of agony in the moody Crazy about you baby . My shock was that there were not many takers for Maxines One in a Million ? Paul had to shame people onto the floor for this one when they should have been running to it IMO.

I wish I took some wedges with me , because i just can't dance in flat shoes , thankfully I begged a pair off Sarah for a few hours.

Glad I raided Greggs on route for food energy boosts , And Keith must have been very unwell or is still dieting because he refused my fairy cakes !

Really really a stunning event , sounds were superb ! They all held the Torch with such magnificence it really was like watching the soul Olympics

Soul Olympics-- Like it Carms! Glad you enjoyed it...you summed it up nicely............

Well Basford---you did a Ryan Hall on us!!!....having fun has never been sooo easy!!!

Many many thanks to EVERYONE for making this happen. The DJ's, who all dug deep and gave us some corkers, all behind the scenes pushing this, those who donated to the raffle, the Morgan sisters for all your work in putting the raffle together and making it go with a BANG

****Update**** Julie informs me the raffle made £404 on the night THANKS ALL

Most of ALL many thanks to YOU LOT--for spending your hard-earned and making your way down to Basford. Over the last three years you have selflessly made an effort to come and support us once a year in a tribute to 'the greatest little soul club in the world'

It never ceases to amaze me, the vibe and goodwill these events have generated. The great and the good from the early days of our scene have attended and regaled us with stories from back in the day, filled in gaps where time has faded the memory and most of all rekindled friendships, often long lost.

After having a day to reflect--I can honestly say its a humblin experience, personally---never to be forgotten.

Music AND people have fashioned this 'scene' of ours and saturday just reinforces that belief....I can't thank you enough--we waved an all too fleeting Hello and Goodbye--to The Torch and a time of our lifes that is forever a part of us..

I thank you
