Less than two weeks to go ...
To be honest we thought long and hard about whether to add more dates to what is already a pretty packed soul calendar - obviously, we've done our absolute best to avoid clashes wherever possible. On the back of the magnificent and much appreciated feedback we received following the first instalment waaay back in July last year, not least from swathes of folk who missed the first one for whatever reason, we've been back to the club and, for now, have confirmed two dates for 2012 so get em in your diary:
Saturday 18th February 2012: Mick H, Dave Welding, Kev Murphy, Jumpin Joan, Kev Spittle, Phil T
Saturday 19 May 2012: Carl Fortnum, Carl and Maria Willingham, Dave Welding, Jumpin Joan, Kev Spittle, Phil T
What'll be the same as before
First, the residents will be the same i.e. Jumpin Joan, Kev Spittle, PhilT. Guest-wise we've tried to set the bar about as high as it'll go and the February session sees the return of Dave Welding, who never fails to deliver, alongside the fabulous Mick H and sooper dooper Kev Murphy. Safe to say then that your fiver will guarantee eight hours of music that is out of the ordinary and, we think, the top drawer
Our priorities remain absolutely the same; proper music to get and keep the dancefloor buzzing and having a cracking night out. The policy will be exactly the same musically i.e. we're not trying to break new ground or create history. However, what you'll hear all night, from first record to last, will be quality dance music through a top notch sound system. The focus, as before, will be on tunes played between about 1980 and the present day at clubs like Stafford, Shotts, Tony's, Parr Hall etc etc. (That doesn't exclude what went before but if you're looking for a 'Wigan oldies / Motown' night this ain't gonna be for you.If you love 'northern' though the chances are you'll have a belting night, even if you don't immediately recognise everything that gets played. If you're into it and open minded enough get along, we'd be delighted to see you. Maybe check out the playlist from the first Grumpy Soul back in July?)
There will be absolutely no blaxploitation, country n western, hours of things no one knows, disco, CD's, politics, cock-waving, flat spots, spotlight rounds, pound signs flashing, waiting hours to get a drink, knobheads on the dancefloor throwing beer about, constant requests for R Dean Taylor (fingers crossed), grandparents playing bingo, large screens showing football etc. Like the first one, this'll be a proper soul night for proper soulies with the emphasis on the dancefloor all night. Also like before, it'll happen in a great room at a venue with loads of car parking. It's nice and accessible for all you travellers yet far enough away from local amenities and yokels to suit us perfectly. It'll also have a record bar and last for eight full hours: 8pm - 4am (get there early, the last one was absolutely rammed from the off!!!!)
Oh aye, it'll still be just £5 on the door to get in too.
And finally, what'll be even better?
Having spoken to the club owner he's absolutely delighted to have us back and has assured us that the room will be darker from here on in, as one or two folk requested, and the unfortunate one-off problem with the ladies loos has already been sorted
Joan / Kev n Sharon / Phil
Come on you Grumpy b*stards!

Hi Carms
Thank you so much for your kind words. It means a lot when people say they had a good time. It is the whole thinking behind and the reason why we put on Grumpy Soul. We took the name from the venue because we couldn't come up with anything else. Thanks for noticing we are not grumpy!
The music will be fantastic. Dave Welding, Kev Murphy and Mick H will all take the roof off

Really looking forward to having you back Dave, sterling work last time pal as ever. Here's a cheeky and very early request: in light of recent events, NO BLOODY STICKY TAPE!!!
On that very subject, you (and your minx of a missus) may be interested to learn that, according to radio Lancashire, a rotund Welshman who goes by the name of 'Chico' has finally made it back to Wales safe and sound. The irate, red-faced and still puffing recordsmith told reporters:
"I couldn't believe my eyes. I'd not sold a single thing all weekend so I wasn't in the best of spirits anyway. Next thing, I turned up to collect my wares on Sunday morning to find all of my boxes had been mumified; the whole table was a sea of tape. I was a tad miffed I can tell you."
On a similar but lighter note, albeit one that seems to have added fuel to recent rumours that have been circulating about his apparent penchant for randomly locking himself in rooms, Lowton's ancient soul guru (and fabled heron slayer) Ian Cunliffe did manage to get out of his chalet following his appearance at the same Southport weekender. In what bore all the hallmarks of a copycat attack, possibly perpetrated by the same prankster(s), Mr Cunliffe [and his soon-to-be-bride Jane: he's definitely punching above his weight there btw], awoke to find that their doorway had been taped-up from top to bottom, apparently during the wee small hours of Saturday night.
A noticeably shaken and undeniably thinner Mr Cunliffe declined to comment and hurried away when approached by newsmen who were hoping he might shed light on a story that has been the talk of the town in Lowton, Leigh and surrounding areas ever since it emerged. However, he was heard to utter the words "that b*stard Wedling" as he left the camp site with his cardigan over his head some two days after the event had finished.
Like every good story though, this one has a happy ending... ... Jane was prepared to discuss the matter when a local newspaper visited her at her comfortable Lowton home [replete as it is with loads of valuable, uninsured antiques and no mortice lock on the front door
"It was becoming a regular occurrence and he is getting on after all" she said; "things like doors and handles and that aren't as easy for him these days. It's just a sad fact of life as you get older."
Mr Cunliffe again declined to speak to the media when they visited him at home. Ignoring the array of Thelma issues blue-tacked to the front door, newsmen battled on but he firmly resisted all requests to come to the door and give his side of events, choosing Instead to shout from an upstairs window and, garbled and incoherent though he was for much of the time, he is reputed to have said something along the lines of:
"you're not getting me with that tape again ... Jane, help, I'm locked in ... I've got better records on mi loft wall ... I once shot a heron in th'eye but don't be telling anyone"
We wish him well.

In my defence, I have to say that in my inebriated condition I was cruelly led astray by the she -devil known as Jenni Banks. I would also like to apoligise to Roger and Louise who got the initial blame. I have since disposed of all the remaining rolls of tape with the exception of half a roll which I will be giving Ian-C as a momento of weekend in Southport. I've heard after his ordeal he booked two extra days off work sick, applied for early retirement due to ill heath and has asked Jane to buy him Terry Weight's book on dealing with hostage truma for Christmas.
The only problem I may have with accepting Yours, Kev's and Joan offer to Dj at the second installment of Grumpy's is actually surviving the night long enough to make to the wheels of steel !
I Keep having a re-occuring nightmare, where I'm being repeatedly beaten around the head by a Leek and Daffodil wielding Welshman, whose singing "Men Of HarLech".

I remember - and often bang on about it to anyone who'll listen - an hour he did in a side-room at Middleton a couple of years ago and can honestly say it was head an shoulders above just about anything I've heard in my time on the scene, certainly in recent years. One after another after another, records I've had one tape for years and didn't know they actually existed, one-offs, old monster cover-ups, you name it ... ..., absolute magic! (I was on immediately before him as I recall and felt like setting fire to my box about 15 minutes into his set).
The tragedy was that there were about 5 people in that tiny room listening to it. Not at GS in May though! Hope the place is absolutely packed to the rafters and that we can do the bloke justice. He'll be ably supported by another cluster of solid souls of course and there'll be absolutely no compromises in terms of quality we can assure you, details to follow soon as we've firmed things up ... ... will post in events in due course. In the meantime, Feb is looking like it's gonna rock all night and we're really pushing it to try and recreate what we had first time out. Get along if you possibly can, gonna be another cracker we think

Lavern Baker" Wrapped Tied And Tangled" for messers Trelfall, Cunliffe and Parry-Jones (Chico)
The Ventura's" Theme from Hawaii Five-O" (helps Kev reminisce when he was a young impressionable sprog at Wigan, as well as being the flavour of his favourite Pizza)
Rolf Harris's "Jake The Pake" (With His Extra Leg) (this should go down well with Mick H, and I've got a spare copy if he wants to make me an offer)
and more to follow
