On Saturday 7th April Pilsley Soul celebrates its 10th anniversary; gee were do the years go?

It doesnâ"žÂ¢t seem 5 minâ"žÂ¢s since we opened the doors 10 years ago and at times it did seem that we wouldnâ"žÂ¢t be here this long and as someone said you only have a limited shelf life, but we are still here and now one of the best known local venues for playing totally across the board soul music.

And to celebrate our special night we have a special guest in the form of Eddy Edmondson (Soul In The Sun) we are particularly pleased to have Eddy with us because it is very rare of him to travel this distance from where he lives up in the North West to DJ, so to show our appreciation for him coming over we will be having him on for two spots (DJ times later)

Also joining us will be Moldie (who seems to be on everywhere) along with the Pilsley resident DJâ"žÂ¢s

We have a special late finish of 2am with the bar also opening later than normal, we hope to start a bit earlier than normal but check out for further details later.

There will be a free CD (if I get them done) just covering myself. Should be about 80 -100 CDâ"žÂ¢s

We have a great wooden dance, super sound system, separate room for the bar and the bar prices are very good, large car park.

Last month we were very busy so just in case, if you want a seat best be there early.

Thankyou for your support over the last 10 years and we hope some of you can make it for our special night.

Hi Barry and Pam

Both Andy and I are really looking forward to the Anniversary special, we know it will be a great night and the house will be rocking with all those cool across the board Soul sounds being played on the decks. I think it might be a case of knocking on the door early to get a seat for this one!!! If the crowd is anything like last month, then queues will be forming into the adjoining bar area.

Both you and Pam have done a magnificent job with Pilsley and Barry you are Mr Pilsley to so many of us. Keep up all the hard work and see you on the 7th April (early doors)

Regards

Jo

Cd's nearly done, lots of calls about the anniversary this Saturday, especially pleased that Eddy is coming over, he does not normally travel this far to DJ these days but he as agreed to come to Pilsley (nothing to do with the golf either) he his also busy organising Soul In The Sun which on the week after, so all in all we are looking forward to a great night.

Wow!! is it ten years already?

Well I've not been there for all the ten, I've done nine and counting. The old place is still going strong and if last month is anything to go by getting stronger. Great across the board music, great dance floor, cheap beer and definitely no politics. Just people out to have a good time and enjoy the music and that's what you will get if you have a night with us.

Barry & Pam and the residents will give everyone a warm welcome and will get everybody moving on that dancefloor.

Come on down to Pilsley and join the ten year celebration with us.

Snows coming three days early. Nearly always falls on a Pilsley night and brings on a postponement. Will be gone by the weekend. Top Man is Eddy Edmunson and he has a totally open mind on the music so he will fit in like a glove. Its a pity he does'nt live closer cause I'm sure he'd be here all the time. Having said that the regular jocks at Pilsley know their stuff also which is why the venue is now pulling very good numbers. Of course it does'nt suit everybody because the scene still has people who are very much set in their own time warp ways. Pilsley is setting the trend for the future and this has to be the way forward. Pilsley is every soul fans educational experience so open your eyes and ears and come and see how Soul has developed over the past 50 years. Should be a packer and a cracker. See you all Saturday, Paul & Ann

For those of you who are visiting us for the first time (we are bit out in the sticks) so I thought I would post directions from the M1

Junction 29 M1, take the A6175 Clay Cross Road, continue, go striaght on at the first r'bout, continue, at 2nd R'bout turn left onto the A6039 signpost towards Tibshelf, continue for approx 2miles, turn right into Hardstoft Road (signpost Pilsley) continue on this road until Pilsley, Turn right into Queens Street (Pub on the corner - your left as you turn) keep on this road go down the hill then up, enter lower Pilsley and the Welfare is at the top of the hill on the left.

Sat nav is S45 8DB ( but sometimes this sends you into a field, don't ask me why)

hope this helps

Well what a great 10 year anniversary night(and day).

It all started with a big financial loss for myself and Mr Cooper (the Southerners) on the golf course as we were soundly beaten by Pat Wallace and Eddy Edmondson (the Northerners). Myself and Barry encountered many "tricky trees" along the way and "still waters run deep" for me as I always seemed to be in the lake. Pat Wallace is going to have a distinct disadvantage in any rematch (he'll be playing blindfold!!).

On to the night and some great across the board sounds all night. We started early at 7.30 and had people coming through the doors right from the off. Eddy did a couple of spots for us one at the beginning of the night around 8.30pm and at 11pm. This mans passion for soul music shone through all night in conversation with him and even more so from behind the decks. In those two spots he did a cameo of what Pilsley is all about (something for everyone).

Needless to say he would be welcomed back with open arms.

All the DJ's kept the floor busy all night. Thanks to Allan Rigby(for the sounds) and Karen (for the food) and their partners in crime Ali and Clint. Moldie once again made the trip up north for us, many thanks go out to him for his help and his hour behind the decks.

I think there were a handful of people in the club that had been there on the first night 10 years ago and had rode the train all the way along to this night. Talking to a couple of them they said they wouldn't have missed it for the world.( see previous comment above from "Rednose").

Finally a "tribute" (don't be sick Eddy!!) to Barry and Pam who put so much hard work in to the running of this little club every month. Here's to the next ten years.

All the best to everyone involved

Andy & Jo

P.S. Thanks to Eddy for a big thumbs up for us on his Solar radio show last night.

Another great night of ATB music. Eddy soon got into the swing of things and quickly sussed out what we like at Pilsley, quality sounds from anywhere between 1960 and 2012. His 2nd spot was the pick of the night IMO. A nice mixture. some oldies, a little R & B, mid tempo. 70's, crossover. 80's and 90's, remixes, y2k and bang up to date 2012 issues such as R Kelly - "Share my love" which is gonna be big. It was nice to see Bob Sinclair - " Tribute" ramming the dance floor also. All played to an enthusiastic crowd with no politices on view making a great atmosphere. Pilsley is getting as MASSIVE as The Wednesday and is leading the way forward for the music. KTF Paul and Ann

After a very busy weekend I finally have the time to sit down and reflect on the 10th anniversary at Pilsley on Saturday night, as Andy Barker said the day started off with a round of golf with Andy & myself taking on Pat Wallace & Eddy Edmondson, we tried our best but were beaten by better golfers, not only did we enjoy the round but the company was great with some great banter, hereâ"žÂ¢s to the next time guys.

After a meat & potato pie meal, the boys went to their hotel and I met up with Moldie at the venue to set up for the night, we actually set up in record time, the sound system was spot on.

For this month only we started at 7.30 with Andy Jones starting us off, and by our normal opening time of 8pm knew we were in for another busy night.

Eddy Edmondson was our guest and he did two spots, in the early spot I think he was little surprised by the number of people on the floor to his sounds, his later spot as Paul mentioned earlier he had the floor rammed with music from across the board, what a great atmosphere, I did have one complaint on the night¦..that there was too many people in.

Thanks also to Moldie not only for his spot which you can always rely on but for his endless promotion of this event and his help in not only setting up but also for helping me set down at the finish at 2am.

Special mention to the residentâ"žÂ¢s Andy Jones, Andy Barker and Alan Rigby not only for their superb spots on the night, itâ"žÂ¢s great to see them now spinning across the board tunes that fill the floor, but also for their help and support over the past few years, I know that sometimes they could be pulling their hair out with me but a big thanks guys for sticking with it.

All in all a great day and night donâ"žÂ¢t think it could have been any better, never ever did I think that Pilsley would last this long especially with our music policy, someone once said this should not work in this area, they were right, but for some reason it does.

Big thanks also to Pam, sheâ"žÂ¢s been there with me all this time and sits on the door faithfully with that great smile of hers.

How long we keep going is anyoneâ"žÂ¢s guess, but at the end of the day itâ"žÂ¢s down to you guys who keep coming and without you there would be no Pilsley, so the biggest thanks goes out to those who support us by attending each and every month.

Barry and Pam

Ps Even though Eddy travelled the distance he did to spin some records for us, he donated his DJ fee to cancer research, top man Eddy

Big night indeed! All the DJs at Pilsley read the dance floor so well. Everytime you are about to sit down along comes another must dance to record.

Looking forward to my September spot already.

I have waited awhile and as there has been no acknowledgement of the hard work Chris put into this venue for more than half of its 10 year run and others have taken the opportunity to have there own small part recognised - I thought it pertinent to say just that - I acknowledge the time, effort and sheer hard graft it took him in finding the venue, getting the place up and running, setting up equipment, taking it down etc etc etc I wont bore you with the details of what running a succesful soul event takes out of an individual but must say the advertising alone (going to every local event every weekend without fail, to ensure the place `stayed on the radar`) took some effort! Anyway I would like to ensure Chris` name is recognised from the days when the place was run as a Northern and Motown night and the photos and my blogs on this site bear testimony to our days of involvement. Also, on another personal note - Our local miners welfare has been a place of social activity over the years outside of the monthly soul gathering and its sad to see what its become.
