Semi known gem

.
. On various occasions southern promoters have brought in big named D.J.s from further north, which raises expectations of something really special being delivered. Not special as say the superb Lou Pride - I'm comun home in the mornun, which we've all heard on many an occasion. But soul music with the same unquestionable quality, such as The Mellow Souls - We can make it. A rare sound that would make anyone's night.
. A fine example being when the venerable Tim Brown played at Moldie & Chris Thorley's 45th Birthday bash at The Crosseley Club in Lightwater some 4 years or so back. He produced some superb music that you just don't get to hear that often, such as Eddie Parker - I'm gone to rare stuff like Milton James - My lonely feeling.
. It was a top draw selection befitting of his status.
.
. Unfortunately, imported big hitters don't always deliver to the same high standard. They may have expensive record collections or a pedigree that goes back to a distant era. But I wonder what the hype is all about when I'm hearing good entertaining music that will fill a large dance floor and yet be quite familiar. There always needs to be that extra bit of spice in say at least two or three really special underplayed or quality rare tunes to make me feel that I've just paid homage to an icon.
.
. So why all this preamble? Well, it leads me on to say that sometimes many folk overlook the amount of talent we have on our own doorstep and that much of this talent is showcased at Ghetto Soul. Take for example Tim Smithers, a resident who will be acting alongside Alfie more or less as a warm up D.J. for the guest players on the 28th. Time and time again he has produced some excellent pieces of underground, virtually unknown soul music. There's certainly a raw edge to his music, which in truth may not be to everyone's cup of tea, particularly those who have an inclination towards Motown and commercial soul.
. He has got many big oldies by the likes of The Hesitations, Sam Williams, Judy Freeman, Frankie Beverley, Lillian Dupree, Johnny Sayles, Cecil Washington and so forth. Therefore he could play, if he so wished, to a more mainstream audience. But he prefers to go out on a limb and be more radical in his approach by introducing fresh or underplayed sounds. Therefore he is suited to Ghetto Soul and some of it's devotees who frequent the rare soul niter circuit.
. I'm sure a few wouldn't mind a piece of Tim, maybe a short full bodied 2nd set, spliced in later with the guest players. For it isn't always possible to get there early.
.
. Of the guest players, Bob Snow I imagine will probably apply a more generalised across the board set because I know that he has a wide diverse range of tastes from Modern Soul to rip roaring stompers. I think many of us on the southern soul scene consider Bob to be a very amiable character. In general conversation I've sometimes mentioned how I'd like to hear this or that long overlooked or forgotten Northern soul tune and Bob would more than often say, "I've got that one!" Which leads me to think that there's alot we haven't yet heard from Mr. Snow's collection. It should be interesting to see what he chooses to play.
.
. I'm afraid I've never encountered John Browne and to be quite truthful, I think I've only ever heard Dave Abbot play on three occasions. Yet each time he has produced pieces of unfamiliar soul music that had real substance and presence every bit as good as some of the rare and underplayed soul that Tim Brown delivered at The Crosseley Club.
.
. I've come to realize that we have many accomplished and talented players right here in our own back yard. Thanks to Ghetto Soul, we have a suitable platform to exhibit much of their off the well beaten track music. Some of which will inevitably break into the mainstream, which in turn keeps the wider soul scene evolving and an active minority of travelling southerners entertained.

The most exciting Soul Night in the South imho, you never know whats going to get played and the soulies spinning the tunes are attendees who know what Ghetto Soul is all about and thats the rare the forgotten the unknown the underplayed but most of all the tunes the ones spinning them love and believe in and the emphasis is on playing for the depth of your collection and from the heart and with that philosophy the one thing that has been in evidence is the sheer quality of the tuneage played and the atmosphere that has generated in the followers that come along every 3 months and with word getting out the numbers are growing and the reputation of Ghetto Soul is growing too, you could hear anything from a latest release to funky to r&b to 70s to 60s soul or anyhting else the dj feels is right for the night, chin strokers night ? nah. thought provoking night ? you better believe it :-)
this coming Ghetto will be yet another class night of quality tuneage and i for one cant wait to hear the sweet sounds of John & Bob alongside the man of the moment on the nighter scene mr Dave, Alfie and Tim this time around doing what they do best and build the night up for the guests to let rip and have a freedom that is seldom seen on this scene to play what they damn well want without the pressure of having to play safe to fill the dance floor BUT dont be fooled that this night wont be a dancers delight cos the dance floor although small gets plenty of action so if your at a loose end or just getting bored of the same old same old then come along give us a try cos i have a feeling you wont be disspointed and im confident in saying that cos many that have given it a go are now regulars and are helping spread the word of what ghetto Soul is all about,
see you there you know you want to :-)))))

Hi Dave hope you & Jan are well...thanx for getting the thread going on here for Ghetto Soul...i would of been on here by now if it was'nt for me being taken ill and ending up in hospital...At last i'm out and at home resting to get myself fighting fit so that i can get this event up & running on the night...Even if i was'nt well enough i know a couple of out standing freinds that would stand in for me and make sure this event still goes ahead....As always Dave a first class post for what is turning out to be a first class event hear down on the south coast...thank-you

Really looking forward to the next instalment of Ghetto Soul...Always a top night...A night of no presure for the dj's as they can just play those 45's that don't get much chance to leave the record collections...if it's soulful & underplayed then Ghetto Soul is the place to hear it down on the south coast...So why not pop along on the 28th jan and give it a try...you won't be dissapointed....

SO MUCH SOUL DOWN SOUTH & I'M LOVIN IT...

Evening Soulies as promised a little review on last night's Ghetto Soul...

What a cracking night down on the south coast...As Bearsy has already said it was the busiest one yet...The venue itself only holds around 60 ppl...this might sound that it's small but for this type of event it is the perfect size...a room self contained with a bar/toilet facilities and a dance floor...last night saw a full house but there seemed to be plenty of room for the traveling & local soulies to mingle/dance and have a good chat...the atmosphere was spot on and all the guest DJ's did a fantastic job in keeping everyone happy with their selection of underplayed soulful choonage...i opened the night with a 45 min set(playlist to follow) Mr Smithers took over from me and did what he does best for the next hour and that is bang out quality tunes. Buy the end of the his set the venue was aleast half full of soulies that came to listen to some different soul records that you don't get to hear much(well down on the south coast)and also listen to dj's that get the chance to play without the pressure of filling the Dance Floor...After Mr Smithers set it was time for Ghetto Soul's first guest dj Mr Bob Snow...pure quality...A mixture of 70's/ x-over/r'n'b etc...the dance floor was seeing plenty of action throughout his set...Dave Abbott was up next and kept the atmosphere going aswell as keping the soulies busy dancing away to a first class uptempo hour of first class tunage....The place was full and the feedback that i was getting from everyone was top draw...and we still had Mr John Browne to go...John took over from Dave and and again his set just flowed perfectly...You could see that everyone was enjoying themselfs by listening & danceing the night away...before we knew it was time for me to say a massive thank-you to everyone that came & supported Ghetto soul & not forgetting the Guest DJ's Bob Snow,Dave Abbott,John Browne & of course Tim Smithers for making it a brilliant night of underplayed soulful choonage in what the DJ's believe in that should be getting played more...

Was Great seeing everyone...soulies traveled from...leeds/cardif/Brighton/CoverntryOxford/London/Bassinstoke & other places such as Poole/Bournemouth/Farnbourough/Frume/I.O.W & the the local Southampton erea...To many names to mention...would love to mention you all...but would take me ages...& you know my spelling...lol

A Massive thanx goes out to my Beatiful wife Ruth....Bearsy for all his help...Maria & Tracey for the Cakes...

And a MASSIVE MASSIVE THANK-YOU to each & everyone of you for makeing it a brilliant night...

Alfie

Dave Mortimore Posted: Jan 30 2012 05:11 PM

Semi known gem

.
. We managed to arrive in time to catch the last half hour of Tim Smithers' set. He wasn't playing easy on yours ears, that warming you up gently style of soul and as he came to the end of the only play I vaguely knew Charlie Brown - whole world is watching, he announced that he was going to up the pace. Needless to say it became heavy and I imagine a little too harsh for most people's tastes, particularly with it being so early on.
. I've always been an exponent of Tim's enterprising approach in constantly bringing fresh music to the local scene. But may I ask, " Is there a Good Woman out there who can tame him? Without a motor or a boat! - Who can soften some of his raw edges and put a few hearts and flowers into his next wave of acquisitions, or maybe convince him to resurrect some of the many superb semi-known records that he once played but now chooses to ignore. I can only hope! For Tim will always be his own man.
.
. A few minutes before 10 o'clock Bob Snow came on to temper the atmosphere with some light and easy soulful 70s sounds that drew mainly females onto the floor. Now it may not be a pre-requisite to fill the dance floor at Ghetto Soul, but it certainly helps the music along when it does. For watching the various styles and flowing movements of Jackie, Nikki Shaw and co. was entertainment in itself, as the night was up and running with a full house.
. Then Bob upped the tempo to music that drew out a few of the males to join in with the ladies with Ronnie Forte - Nervous Breakdown, Baby Huey & The Baby Sitters - Just being careful, Calvin Grayson - Loves just begun and Freddie Williams - I've got to live while I can. There were some further 70s/Crossover sounds thrown in here and there for balance, but the one that drew my attention from Bob's varied set was a forgotten Oldie from the very beginnings of Wigan Casino, Viola Wills - I got love. So forgotten that I struggled to keep up with some of it's rifts whilst dancing. Maybe it's an age thing?
.
. The venue had filled to near capacity with standing room only for many who had come from far and wide. Following on from Bob Snow, Dave Abbott entered with an atmospheric mid-tempo tune of real distinction which set the tone for the earlier part of his set, themed on music somewhere between the genres of Curtis Mayfield and Gil Scott Heron. A flavour of soul that allured the ladies to once again monoplize the dance floor. Later on, Dave mixed in the odd Northern sounding tune. A couple I managed to clock were The Soul Stirrers - Don't you worry and a really good dance tune that I would like to experience on a large dance floor to give it full justice, Al Johnson - You got to make it for yourself.
. How often can you go up to the decks to eyeball what's just been played without making yourself a nuisance? When there is so much to pick up on. Well I decided that once more wouldn't hurt with Wally Coco - Message to society. Part 1 - I hope dave doesn't mind me making mention of these plays!
.
. John Browne, the last of the three guest players, applied an initial 70s/Crossover approach as had Bob Snow with similar favourable results, before turning over to some Northern Soul of which Jackie Beavers - Hold on, Vontastics - Let me down easy and The Summits - Sophisicated Lady floated my boat. There were many others of note, such as the TNT Band - The meditation and the smooth and soulful Robert Parker - Caught you in a lie.
. Our venerable host, Alfie closed off with gratitude to the players and the superb stomper by Richard Knight - Show stopper, which for me was the icing on the cake from a very entertaining night that's lived on in my mind long afterwards.
.
. That's the beauty of this event, for you never come away feeling that a dead horse has just been flogged.
. Apart from enjoying much of the semi-known music that you just don't get to experience too often, some of the obscure and unknown plays do hit the sweet spot and revitalize the spirit of this unique underground soul scene.

Hi Dave;..the atmospheric opener was Willie Dale "Let Your Light Shine" - one of the finest 45s ever (imo). No problem at all you mentioning them or anything else just glad you enjoyed them.

Alfie..well done mate - a superb nite - not a bad tune played and a nice diverse mix...one of the best nites down here i have been to. A great crowd and wonderful music - thats all we need.
