Derek

some time ago now Killa asked me, out of the blue, what the difference is between a spring and your 'standard' onion. Having left me for about 15 mins to ponder, he advised that he didn't know but was just interested. The half eaten jar of silverskins in last month's raffle prize selection suggested to me that his interest hasn't waned so ... can you let him know I have a small gift for him please mate; I'll be bringing it along :wicked:

I told ya! Was gonna open my set with it (some would say it'd be an improvement). JOAN - do not mention the Thornton Sisters at this juncture :boxing:

Not everyday you encounter a tune which is a homage to onions and which makes reference to egyptian pharoes, being scratched with a garden hose and moby dick! Genius and right up Killa's street

Sorry for duplication! Thought I might improve the post with a bit of punctuation so edited it but Mick replied afore I'd had chance. Cheers Mick, always good to see you mate and thanks for the 45!

Early-ish post from me (kids been up and about for ages and they've got me at it already, bless em)

Love this venue! Easy to find, just the the right size for a monthly night, nice n dark with a quality sound system; even a space to look at records with player laid on. A fair cross-section of the NW's 'rare / underplayed' (don't like to pigeon-hole things but can't think of another term this early LOL) contingent in attendance who, along with the hosts of course, create a really friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

Derek and Killa cut folk lots of slack in terms of the music policy and heard a good range of tunes over the course of the night, virtually all 60s. Shame Tony missed a chunk of his first set getting over from Leeds but enjoyed what he played later on; genuinely nice guy who uses a bit of imagination. As per, Killa strives to keep things fresh and continues to make me laugh out loud on a regular basis - great lad, nutter  Similarly, whenever I've heard Derek - his co-resident / promoter - he's always played things you don't hear everywhere you go which has got to be a good thing in my book. Joan: just all-round quality as usual hun. Proper sets (as opposed to a jumble of records one after another) and one of the best ears around IMHO (just the one mind): Sharpees - say no more

Obviously, not everything I heard was my bag over the course of the night and I lowered the tone by playing some rubbish as usual but, realistically, it'd be pretty remarkable if that did / didn't happen wouldn't it. Absolutely the best thing about the night for me, musically, was that I didn't once feel the urge to groan at the sound of an absolutely 'done to death' oldie or feel as though I was listening to the same 50 records as I'd listened to at x,y and z which I sometimes do. Nothing stale about it then and I'll wager most folk will be pretty much guaranteed to hear at least a couple of tunes that are either new to them or which they haven't heard out in a good while at Consoul - what's not to like?

Thoroughly enjoyed the company of some of my very bestest mates, as I always do. Laughs aplenty and mindless chat (mostly from me - sorry) that was right up there with the best / most inane rubbish you'll get anywhere. (Get well soon Ian, you were missed bud, and great to see Willie and Melv after a wee while).

Overall, I'd definitely encourage anyone with even a marginally open mind who fancies something over and above the run of the mill night to give this un a go. Thanks again D/S/K for inviting me to play a few records, really enjoyed it. Love the venue as I say and you seem to be establishing a solid and decent-sized core of support which can only augur well, particularly if you stick broadly to the recipe which seems to be working. See you again soon for sure

Won't post a full playlist but here's a handful of plays from my two half hour sets: Headlines - he's looking for a love (Luau) Universals - diamonds and pearls (Cooking) Mystiques - put out the fire (Twinight) Debonaires - please come back baby (Soul-Click) Pee Wee Shuck and Huey - beside myself (Flagg) John Wesley - love's such a funny thing (Melic) Little Stanley - out of sight loving (Vance) Trent Sisters - a letter a day (Go Gate) Gerri Taylor - I'm satisfied (Mica) Ty Karim - really made it good (Senator) Oliver Joy - keep love growing (Big Deal) Thornton Sisters - I keep forgettin (Cuppy) Billy Hines - ling ting tong (Wa-Tusi) Chuck Flamingo & KCPs - what's my chances (Rojac) Strands - breeze from the trees (Tarx)

Cheers
Phil

Thanks Phil, for those kind words! As per usual, brilliant spots by yourself & Joan1
you both never fail to deliver the goods!
Glad you like the venue, it is a cracking room, and creates a good atmosphere1

Killa has named the the record buying area ie: the kitchen, "THE SPARTUCUS ROOM"!
due to the fact its full of men! You,re right about him being slightly mad, but you couldn,t meet
a nicer bloke!
Thanks to Tony from leeds for two cracking spots, you got there in the end!
As usual,it goes without saying, how much we appreciate the support we get from our regulars,
its good to know that hard work. & perseverance pay off in the end!
Just let the music speak for itself!
And with the quality of dj,s we have on, hopefully, we can,t fail!

HOPE WE GOT 2012 OFF TO A "SOULFULLY" GOOD START!
SEE YOU NEXT MONTH

Had another great night at Con Soul where your greeted by two friendly ladies at the door , have got to agree with the previous comments about the diversity of sounds that was played at this little gem of a venue, heard top sets by everyone, certainly kept this little un' happy.

Won't be able to make the next one but i'm looking forward to the one in March.

What a great nite at Con Soul! Despite the weather, quite a few hardy and intrepid soulies made it to this great little venue; and who could blame them given the usual serving of tasty soul fayre to warm anyone's cockles on a cold and frosty night!

Great stuff too from Gibby who finally made it after an arduous journey over the Pennines ;). It was well worth it - what an awesome set he played!

This place is now one of our priorities in our monthly Soul Schedule, so we'll look forward to our return next month.

Gutted I missed it.

Could barely get the car out of the drive though, its at the bottom of the road. The wheels were spinning at way faster than 45 rpm, and for some reason ABS, ESP (dunno what that is) and power steering no longer work!

I couldn't believe it when I heard it took Gibby three and a half hours to get to Manchester from Halifax ! theres commitment for you . I think we reached around 35 , which I think was brilliant all things considering , but then the Mancs always support each other so I shouldn't be surprised.

It made a nice change for Nige to be able to have a drink as we left the car on the slope outside mine last night with a puncture, it was all sorted in the morning thanks to a guy from red flag who goes to the Twisted wheel , its a small world when you are on the souling circuit.

We loved playing at Con Soul , we always do because we are always made to feel so welcome by Derek & Sheila and most of all becaus ewe feel so liberated when we play there with it having a FREE to play ANYTHING policy as long as its soulful .

My shock of yesterday was Dereks ability to know I always have a nap in the afternoon on a saturday , it was spooky taking that message on my phone , I recon it takes one to know one wink wink :)

Anyway after a superb night Andy G very Kindly took us back to Prestwich where hearty home made Meat & Potato pie was begging to be eaten to finish off a perfect nights souling.

Thanks for having us xx

WHAT A BRILLIANT NIGHT IT TURNED OUT TO BE! WE THOUGHT WE WERE GOING TO HAVE A SMALL, BUT INTIMATE GATHERING, BUT WE DIDNT BARGAIN ON THE RESILIENCE OF OUR
LOYAL SUPPORTERS! IT TAKES A LOT TO DETER SOULIES FROM THEIR MONTHLY "FIX"!
FIRSTLY,WE MUST THANK NIGE & CARMS FOR STEPPING IN TO THE BREACH, PHIL DICK & COLIN WOOD COULDNT MAKE IT, DUE TO THE SNOW , (WE WILL DEFINITELY HAVE YOU BOTH ON ANOTHER TIME) ABSOLUTELY SUPERB SETS FROM "SHERLOCK & WATSON"! & TWO OF THE MOST GENUINE PEOPLE ON THE SCENE! THANKS TO BOTH OF YOU.

NOW, WHAT CAN WE SAY ABOUT GIBBY! WHAT A TROOPER! NOT SURE MANY PEOPLE WOULD HAVE ENDURED WHAT HE DID TO GET HERE, BUT WE WERE SURE GLAD HE DID!
HE CAME FLYING IN WITH HIS RECORDS & FLASK OF COFFEE IN TOW,
AND PROCEEDED TO PLAY A BLINDER!
CHEERS GIBBY! & WHAT A LOVELY BLOKE!
IT WAS GOOD TO SEE SOME OLD FRIENDS FROM WAY BACK, BERNIE & MARIE, GREAT TO CATCH UP! AND THE COUPLE WHO TRAVELLED FROM CAMBRIDGE!
AND IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING HOW MUCH WE APPRECIATE THE SUPPORT FROM OUR

Really glad we made the effort to get there, although it took us 40 mins instead of the usual 20. Good on Nige n Carms for standing in at short notice, (and that was his sales box)??? WOW. Derek i have to say your spot was one of the best i have heard from you, (even though you did'nt have any modern stuff for Donz.....you still managed to keep her awake) Well Done. My vote HAS to go to "Gibby the Intrepid" :hatsoff2:He actually BURST through the door, more or less straight on, and what a fantastic set he played. Top night, lovely people, great atmosphere, see you all next month.
