In what may be Soul music's most exciting collaboration of the year, Rock'n Roll Hall of Famers THE IMPRESSIONS will team up with Brooklyn's BINKY GRIPTITE and the Dee-Kays, a group of musicians featuring members of the Dap-Kings, for a unique Soul revue showcasing two of the best acts of the genre's history, bringing together two generations. This is a rare chance to hear some of the greatest Impressions hits, such as "Keep on pushing," "Choice of Colors", "We're a winner" and of course "People get ready," all performed by the group's original members Fred Cash, Sam Gooden and Reggie Torian (who replaced former lead vocalist Curtis Mayfield in the early 1970s), backed by the mighty DeeKays. If you have always wondered what it was like to see the Impressions during their prime in the 1960s, this show is a must for you!
Musical support before the concert and at the afterparty comes from two of New York's finest Soul DJs MR. ROBINSON and DJ HONKY (hosts of the popular "Dig Deeper" rare Soul concert series) and DJ PARI of Soulpower in Richmond, VA, the official tour DJ for The Impressions. Also showcasing his skills behind the decks is Capitol recording artist Eli "Paperboy" Reed - a rare treat for those who are used to seeing him as a live performer.
The Impressions originally formed in 1958 in Chicago by Chattanooga, TN, natives Sam Gooden, Richard Brooks and Arthur Brooks, who added Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield to their line-up to become Jerry Butler & the Impressions. By 1962, Butler and the Brookses had departed, and after switching to ABC-Paramount Records, Mayfield, Gooden and new Impression Fred Cash collectively became one of the top-selling and most important vocal groups in the history of Soul music. Mayfield left the group for a solo career in 1970; Leroy Hutson, Ralph Johnson and Reggie Torian were among the replacements who joined Gooden and Cash. Inductees into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, The Impressions are best known for their 1960s string of
hits, many of which were heavily influenced by gospel music and served as inspirational anthems for the Civil Righys Movement. They are also 1998 Grammy Hall of Fame inductees for their hit “People get ready” and are winners of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Pioneer Award in 2000.
Binky Griptite is the Emcee and guitarist with the Dap-Kings. They are spearheads of a movement that to captures the essence of Funk and Soul music as it was at its height in the mid-1960s to mid-1970s, making him the perfect musical director to back the Impressions and deliver an authentic recital of Chicago Soul.
As the house band for Brooklyn's Daptone Records, the Dap Kings are mainly known as the band behind new Soul singer like Sharon Jones. They were also the touring band for the late Amy Winehouse here in the States and have provided much of the music for her "Back to Black" album.
