PIE HALL - 4 Jan 2012

These Pie Hall events don't half seem to come around quickly. I don't feel as though we've had a chance to blink since the last one!! However, they do say that good things come to those who wait ........

I usually start with the open decks report but last night we were blown away by our guest DJ. In what felt like a soul coup d'etat, Julian Bentley made a much awaited return to Huddersfield with a box full of Northern dynamite! The ever loyal crowd at the Pie Hall had little chance or inclination to sit down for the 60 minutes that Julian played. Tracks that some of us could only dream of owning were blaring out in all their majesty for us to enjoy. For me, Mel Britt's "She'll Come Running Back" was a personal favourite. However, to just highlight that particular track would be an injustice so I hope Julian will post his set list in due course.

At one point during Julian's set, panic ensued and he was was seen to leap away from the decks and run towards the exits mid track. In the comical confusion that followed, I ran towards the decks to take over just as Jools from the Harold Soul-Club reached over and pressed the start button on the decks to continue with the cued up 45. However, the said exit doors burst back open and in raced Julian to take back over. Apparently he'd had a request for a specific rare soul track only to realise that the chap who wanted to hear it had nipped outside for a quick ciggie!!!

There were loads of familiar faces there last night and it was very busy.

I do make a point of mentioning the the guys who are involved in the open decks sessions as they do put a lot of effort into planning their sets. Please do try and get in early to check out their delivery of diverse and quality Soul music.

The second most talked about event of the evening was the youthful acrobatics of some of our dancers. Les McGuire (Soul Up North) in particular was seen (an photographed) doing backdrops out on the floor - it just gets better and better at the Pie Hall!!!!!!

Once again, a really big thanks to Julian Bentley for a sensational guest spot - the Pie Hall crowd were buzzing on the back of that. The resident DJ's were OK too ;-)

The night was over much too early and before we had time to play just one more record, five hours of Northern Soul had disappeared into the night air.

Take pity on my tired feet was an apt expression for those who attended the Pie hall last night.

Next month - Ben Prest - 2nd Friday of the month.

Hi Jim

many thanks for inviting me to DJ - lovely venue and great hand pulled beer!

It was great to meet up with lots of old pals and to meet some new ones as well. The crowd were very enthusiastic, appreciative and supportive throughout the whole night and even Mrs B commented that it was nice to hear music played by all the DJs that was not the usual stuff you hear week in and week out. Well done to everyone.

Anyway, as requested, and not in any particular order here's what I can remember I played. As it's an OVO venue I've only listed the labels where they're UK issues or the odd interesting label/issue.

Alexander Patton - A lil lovin' sometimes - Cap 66 series R/W demo - my all time favourite!

Jackie Edwards - I feel so bad - Island

Sapphires - Gotta have your love - HMV

Formations - At the top of the stairs - UK MGM pink/grey demo

Mary Love - You turned my bitter into sweet King

Patrinell Staten - A little love affair

Ray Agee - I'm losing again - request for John Hillel who went out for a fag when I played it!!!!!!!

Mel Britt - She'll come running back - John's favourite

Lou Pride - I'm cummin home in the mornin'

Salvadors - Stick by me baby

Tomangoes - I really love you

Nabay - Believe it or not

Gene Toones - What more do you want

Lenny Curtis - Nothing can help me now

Lillie Bryant - Meet me halfway

Rita & Tiaras - Gone with the wind - Dore demo

Nolan Chance - Just like the weather - Bunky - request for Jill Crossland

Kenny Gamble - The jokes on you

Pat Lewis - No one to love

Larry Clinton - She's wanted in three states - Dynamo demo

William Powell - Hearthache souveniers

Cecil Washington - I don't want to lose

Professionals - That's why I love you

Shane Martin - I need you - UK CBS demo

Timi Yuro - It'll never be over for me - UK Liberty

Well, that's all I can remember.

Thanks to everyone who made me welcome, even the guy who approached me when I arrived with my playbox and asked " are you wanting to play some tunes? We have an open deck policy but you need to book in first to get on the rota!" Made me laugh quietly to myself as I thought I'd been booked!

As I said before, great night, great venue, great people, great beer. What more can you ask for?

Cheers

Julian

PS

Happy birthday to Les McGuire for his 60th on Tuesday.
