We'll give it a push these next few weeks. Still a wee while to go until 3rd Aug obviously and some must do events in the interim which we'll certainly try to attend.

It'll soon come round and I reckon this'll be the best Grumpy yet. (If you've never been but were thinking about it this'd be the one to make the extra effort to get to I reckon). Can't really go wrong with the guests we've got lined-up, supported as ever by mssrs Welding, Livesey and myself. Should be a cracking night, hope its rammed!

See you out n about and, all being well, in Runcorn on the 3rd Aug.

Anyone looking for accommodation on the 3rd Aug, the closest and most competetive option looks like:

The Campanile, Low Lands Rd, Runcorn WA7 5TP. (Twin rooms from £33 at the mo according to their website)

Incidentally, there's a taxi firm based on the club car park too, which is handy

 Just off to e-bay to try and win a few tittyshakers to play at the anniverary :wicked:

P.S by the way my cod piece is totally natural and not artificially enhanced :D  :yes:

OMG Joan

I woke up this morning to be inundated with emails wanting to known if me and Louise have become a tribute act to "Dollar" !

Don't be surprised if halfway throuh my set Louise leaps on the stage, we then cut the record and burst into a quick chorus of "Shooting Star" followed by "Mirror Mirror" :lol:

Still a bit of time yet mate, please don't encourage her.

Really looking forward to having you and Henning down to play for us Andy (I'll get my requests in early doors for you n Henning: Walter & the Ads and Benny Harper please chaps :thumbup: ).

There's one or two Grumpy regulars on their hols as you might expect but, by the same token, lots of really positive comments from folk who say they're coming down so let's hope we get a good crowd in which does two top fellas with great records justice.

Oh aye, there's some nutter from Peterborough way on too, he's got one or two [thousand] decent records, turns green occasionally and is completely out of control. Just the ticket!

I think it'll be alright I do   :thumbsup:

Top man Henning.

Not long now mate. Hope it's rammed n rockin!

We might show you a sample of Preston's nitelife on the Friday. It's all very civilised, culturally high brow even - a bit like Geneva I'd imagine, although not as high falutin as Runcorn, obviously. Have you met Carl Fortnum btw? He'll show you some stuff you'll remember, I'll guarantee it. He's the green fella a few posts above this lol

But business is business and your bound to sell more magnums and cornetto's on the beach at Whitby than a car park in Runcorn. So if anyone's In Whitby in late August forget the rest and keep an eye out for Cunnliffe's Cornet's there the best.

Hopefully not too many though Kirsty!

One or two regulars will be AWOL for sure but we still hope to get a good crowd in as per (not least cos Henning's coming over from Switzerland specially to play some tunes for us).

All holidays in Preston are cancelled, officially, and rumours abound that Louis plus messrs Kellet & Molloy might even make it; now that'd be magic: "this uns going out to 'soul tw*ts' everywhere lol

  • There's also The Holiday Inn, Wood Lane, Beechwood, WA7 3HA - 0871 423 4876 or book on-line

Got some flyers out last night (thanks again Willie!) and caught up with a few folk I hadn't seen in a while. Real good buzz about next Sat which is fantastic, looks like there'll be a good few Grumpy virgins, good on yer! Proper looking forward to it!

Been tweaking the sound system this week; upgraded one or two bits so that should be tip top. It'll need to be cos it's gonna get a solid eight hour hammering from some of the best sounds around. The guests'll be a bit special this time methinks. No warm ups or tailing off; as per, proper dance tackle first record to last.

Joan'll post times later this week.

Ps: Mr Fortnum's quiet and that's always a bit disconcerting. Stingray ... Anything could happen lol

Nice work H!

There's a 'kit' - well, a drum and a symbol if I'm being totally honest - behind the stage at the club. We might wheel you out with Carl on vocals at some stage. (A number of people commented on his entirely impromptu performance 'backing' George Lemons last time out; it really was quite something).

Nice one Dave .... Have just checked me passport again and it does still include Runcorn on it ??

" Crabbit Soul " ??? .... ( I think that's how you spell it ?)

Quote

Scottish words: crabbit

12 August 2010 00:38

I suppose crabbit is just a Scottish version of the English word Grumpy, but you never really here people using that word. But crabbit is a favourite descriptive word in Scotland and it just means bad tempered or grumpy.

When I was young it always seemed to be old people who were crabbit, or should I say — people of a certain age —

Or as you would say in the English Hemisphere

"Grumpy Soul"... Bring it on !!

Wa really looking forward to Saturday and cannot wait to catch up for sure ....

Right on right on tfk

For sure we will Joan

You'll be reassured to learn that Mr Fortnum built some post war bridges with Henning and Switzerland per se on the phone yesterday Dave, raising as he did the sensitive issue of Nazi gold which had me pmsl

He's well up for it as usual is the lad.

Met Henning yesterday and he's a lovely bloke (although he ate all my pizza, greedy git). To be fair though, he has followed instructions and not brought any disco with him. He'll fit right in! Hope we get a good crowd for him n Andy!

Right, I'm sat in my garage looking at a mountain of equipment and wondering how you tell a bloke that's travelled fromSwitzerland and who is full of cornflakes that he's on the roof rack lol

Dunno how you're fixed but we'll set up then go to a pub nr Runcorn for some scoff beforehand I think. Let Joan or I know if you fancy that and we'll guide you in. Failing that see you there mate.

Well, that was better than alright I think. Lots on again last night and August is holiday time for those that do so we were a bit twitchy to be honest, especially with so many 'regulars' away. As it transpired we needn't have worried. Over 110 through the door (in a room that holds around 180 or so before feeling rammed that was spot-on).

In case anyone was wondering, we 'made' £30 last night (we'll put that towards a service for the speakers n mixer in time for November). The club is an hour from where we live and it's a bit of a ball-ache getting everything down there and especially packing up again at 4am. I also find it hard to relax when its on because you're constantly worrying that everything is ok and that people are enjoying themselves (I'm not just miserable, honest!)Why bother then? Well ...

People hand flyers out for us all over the shop and still gladly pay their fiver to get in, Lou n T sit on the door all bloody night, the club owner loves having us there and, most importantly, folk turn up from Scotland, Oxford, Gloucs, Northants, Hull, Cambs, Derby, the NE, Yorks, S Wales to name but a few (not forgetting Switzerland, Germany & Hong Kong of course), people like Des n Beggsy and Chico and Mark make the effort to lump their sales boxes along, Franc G and the Whitmores come and say they had a good night, Billy W dances away like a good un all night, Diddy comes en route to his hols, Mark J's always mad for it, Baz leaves his mates in Manchester to get over and have a gander, a band of 'locals' (relatively) support us time and again and no one has an agenda other than to have a good time listening and dancing to great soul records. That's why its worth it and what makes it what is it which, after all, is a little soul night in Runcorn run by a couple of numpties. Unbelievable, thanks again!

It's primarily for the people who paid their money to comment on the music of course but I thought it was high class last night. In all honesty, I don't think you could grumble much whatever your bag: Gwen Owens, Don Gardner, Salvadors, Foreign Blue Ren, Paris, Nomads, Magnetics (various), Trent Sisters etc, some high class crossover, the odd 'funkier' thing, one-offs and acetates through the O'Jays, Alice Clarke and lesser played Motown.

Dj-wise, briefly:

- Henning's enthusiasm shone through (he came from Switzerland ffs) and he had the balls not to just go same old, same old; we liked that! One or two first time outs alongside things like the Nomads, Benny Harper etc, top man;

- Dave just never lets us down, ever. Understated, gets on with it and does the biz;

- Andy Dennison, apart from being one of the nicest blokes you'll ever meet, was absolutely bob on and high class - but then we knew that;

- Carl Fortnum? It's just a privilege to have him involved, outstanding on every level every single time;

- Me n Joan not a clue!

Til November the 2nd then...

Cheers

Phil

What a superb night last night, first time there won't be my last, music all night was out standing from all DJ's, the sound system was also superb, bottom line what a great little venue, very friendly and bar prices very cheap. If you haven't been before I would recommend it. Keep the good work up of all, thanks for making us welcome. Cheers Billy

the franc sweat-o-meter indicated a large wet front making it's way southwards towards the knee area by the end of the evening due to a large soul front coming in from the dj regions. The dancefloor temperatures rose to a high as the soul quality increased precipitating in dancer dehydration and blistering feet. Music well above average with attendances high ...tomorrows forecast for this soul night is ......sunny and bright !!!!

Huge thanks to everyone who turned out on Saturday. The music was top drawer all night, which is the whole thinking behind Grumpy. Great crowd as always and so appreciative of what was played, which is fantastic

Hats off to everyone, especially Henning (his flight was cancelled last night and is still nowhere near home due to having to go via Frankfurt). Top man indeed
