Of all the Reunions, Revivals, Anniversaries and Get-Togethers to celebrate great clubs of the past, this is surely the most anticipated, and if i may quote an often overused phrase "If I had a pound for every time somebody's said "it's about time we had an Albrighton Nite" I'd have enough to buy a nice record or ten" !

Only recently I've read on several forums about the lack of a credible ATB club capable of leading the way, well I think it's fair to say that Albrighton was the "Daddy of Them All" in that direction in it's day. So many of today's scene's favourite tunes came from that club, and when you couple that with it's ability to breathe new life into some of those former 3 spin wonders from other ground breaking venues of times past (like Mecca, Stafford etc) as well as giving turntable time to many tunes previously dismissed as "only collectors/tape swappers records", Albrighton was truly a club of it's time.

One last thing that I think made Albrighton special - it was those collectors sounds, along with the collectors savvy enough to dj them properly, which made Albrighton different, and great, in equal measures. Most clubs that last long enough to establish themselves as a part of northern soul history do so with a handful of resident DJ's, usually well known names from previous venues. Albrighton broke that mould and it's own DJ team created a club that really didn't rely on "Big Names". Of the DJ's who eventually became the Albrighton family only Butch and Sam could be considered big names, and the rest ranged from hard working local DJ's & Collectors to those who'd hardly ever stood behind a pair of decks in their life, but had an appreciation of great music and a passion for sharing their music with like minded souls.

Well done to those who've stepped forward to take this venture on. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying ' I'll Be There', Save me my usual seat, in the corner next to Mr Rimmer !

For those who can't remember Swancote Country Club was Eshers old 86 club venue.

Did the 86 Club start at that village hall ( up the lane opposite The Wheel of Worfield?) and then later go to the Swancote? or have i got it wrong again ( my memory isn't very reliable these days Spook, but on the upside it means I keep hearing lots of newies ;-)

Spot on John

The old village hall with a tiny bar up the corner, it had a 96 person capacity but used to get over 200 + in.

You even had to queue for a piss

Cant find any links on the face book threads.

Whats your music policy? looking at the DJs it should be mostly northern, is this the case, thanks.

Really really sorry but Kev and I can't make this.....and yes we were two soulies that loved Albrighton and tried to never miss one. If I had a pound for everytime I've asked someone if they went to Albrighton and then prattled on about how good it was, I'd be rich.

Hope you all have a good night.

a colossal revival for a colossus of the scene that re-invented the term " broaden your horizons" oh, and the wealth of worshippers to the dd alter was, on a rotation scale, immeasureable!. bloody hell!......why does something always take me by surprise, seems this has been kept under wraps for a while and its suddenly sprung on not just me but a myriad of other like minded soulies...PLEASE STOP DOING IT!, give us some advance warning of goodtimes to be had...GGGRRRRR!!. THOUGHT THE SWANCOTE HAD BEEN BULLDOZED...not been ther since pep ran it, can it squeeze a 1000 people in like the good old days? and does this mean that my "LAST ALBRIGHTON NITER ENTIRE PLAYLIST" ( see on : soulfulkindamusic ) is now irrelevant?. these and more questions, im sure, will be answered in due course...now all i have to do is rearrange next weekend...AND I WAS GETTING NICELY WORKED UP FOR PRESATYN AS WELL...DOH!!

Hi Steve

Can't speak for the others but in the true spirit of Albrighton I shall be spinning a "Across The Board" set now incompassing 6 decades or is if you wish to simplify it from the last two centuries.

I Rember going to Albrighton a couple of times during late 90's and thought it was very reminiscent of early stafford, ATB with more on top, And i remember a few Djs guesting around wellingborough and what a superb music policy, Probbaly the first place i heard a larger slice of R&B than other venues and was allways rammed solid, Must have been doin something right.

I saw Chick at Raven in december,First time in over 30 yrs All the djs played wow sets and i realy hope i can get to this.

Good Luck Chick, I'm Sure it will be a monster nite.

Along with the Uptown Down South Newbury Nighters, the best Nighter of its time, had a massive influence on the scene & a venue sorely missed, if a venue with the same musical aspirations was to become a regular event, I would be there in a flash...as Im out in Baghdad, cant be with you guys tonite, soooo have a good un..

What a cracking night!! A great mix of quality tunes was played all night (as expected!) and lots of like-minded people having a dance/catch up/record buy etc.

A HUGE thanks to all concerned - DJ's and Chic (who multi-tasked all night!!) - looks like The Spirit of Albrighton really is back.

Roll on the 18th May when the next one is due to hit Swancote!
