Sorry for the delay with this folks but I really can't let our final event pass without saying something.  I'll try to keep it brief though as 8 years is a long time and there's a lot I could write!

Last weekend was the culmination of 8 years hard work in promoting Soul Purpose from the modest little soul night with 40-50 guests when we started back in 2005, to where we ended up: undoubtedly and proudly one of the premier events of it's type in the UK.

Over the years, we tried to bring together some of the finest DJ's in the UK, and by consensus the flyers reveal a who's who of spinners, with relatively few avenues left unexplored.  Further, we tried to think outside the box a little in an effort to cross-pollinate with other scenes outside of the traditional modern soul scene.  I'm thinking Jose Carretas, Sean McCabe and of course Vick Lavender, the latter also seeing us reach beyond the UK for our DJ talent.  We also used our early sets and afternoon sessions as a way of letting guys and girls who rarely get a chance to play out, share their tunes with us all.  We thank ALL of our DJ's for their input over the years.

We must also thank all the "helpers" over the period: people that have distributed fliers, helped via radio and just generally had nice things to say about our night.  Fish deserves a special mention in this respect, helping with fliers, promoting via his website and of course supporting us with his Simply Soul stall, a welcome addition to any successful night.  I saw elsewhere that he's only missed one event over the years!

Paul Garland (along with Graham, Will & Keith) should also be singled out for his help with equipment over the recent years, thanks mate, much appreciated.

Whilst I'm on a name check, I also need to remind people of the important role played by Andy Baskett behind the scenes.  It's easy to see Soul Purpose as Sam, Mark G & Mark R, but Andy's role is crucial as the equipment man.  I've known Andy since I was 5 years old, and can tell you that he's a diamond of a man who I've never heard have a bad word for anyone: a top bloke indeed.  Also to Paul, Jo & Tania for the muscle and help with the door over the years, thanks a million.

Thanks of course to Sketchley Grange for putting up with us and the provision of concessionary rooms for our guests.  Hopefully this provided some of you with nice nights away, aside from the musical side of things: I know many of you made good use of the Spa over the years.  Not bad for around £50/night, not forgetting a full cooked breakfast!

Lastly of course to YOU, the people that really matter, who pay their money and fill the floor every time.  Certain people were getting emotional last week, which tells us all we need to know about the legacy our night leaves behind.  We even had a card of thanks from some of our regulars, which was a nice touch.  It would have been far easier for us to let Soul Purpose run and run until it had little left to say, than to call a day on it whilst it was on top, but this way it will be remembered at its peak and hopefully take its rightful place in UK soul scene history.

Back to last week then, specifically.  DJ wise we wanted the last event to draw from some of our more regular guests/supporters.  Colin Curtis has DJ'd numerous times for us so was one of the first on the teamsheet.  Unfortunately Colin could not be with us on the night and we wish him well.  Dr Bob Jones, Gary Dennis and Fish have also made numerous appearances and were also obvious choices for us for the final event.  Following the pattern of our regular Friday night sessions and Saturday all dayers, the Saturday two-roomed event was slightly busier than Friday evening’s single room session, but both days were more than adequately supported, leading to a great atmosphere on each day.  Saturday was split into various themed sessions across two rooms to reflect the musical diversity we've aimed for over the years.  Modern soul classics, rare/crossover soul and deep and soulful house sets were programmed in around the normal main room nu soul/soulful house/jazz/club classics session.  In truth, it couldn't have worked out much better, with Saturday building nicely throughout the day and reaching a crescendo in the big room for the main sets of the night from Fish and Bob.  A full floor throughout with last set covered by the three Soul Purpose promoters as we all played one tune each in turn, up until the final record at 2am, Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On".

Meanwhile special guests Andy ‘Tats’ Taylor and Jordi Ripolles had things bubbling nicely on their debuts in the rare/crossover room, alongside a few more regular spinners/supporters of Soul Purpose, Andy Riley, Chris Dalton & Mark Hopes.  It was good to secure the services of Tats and Jordi before we put the gig to bed, after several failed attempts to do so.

We did actually have a handful more Soul Purpose virgins with us from a DJ perspective, and thanks to Grumpy Brown, Neil Rushton, Phil Kingswood, Scouser Paul and the Comrades of Soul (Paul, Will & Graham) for their valuable contributions.  Last but by no means least, thanks to Andy Jackson who returned to the Soul Purpose decks for what I believe was his second appearance at the event.

A BIG thank you to ALL of our DJ’s over the weekend.

Enough already!  A heartfelt thanks then for all the support over the years folks.  I hope no-one feels left out of this little summary — it’s one of the reasons I get put off doing them!!  If I have missed anyone out, blame the head not the heart.
