Fri 6th December 2013 - CALIENTE (Peterborough) - Free entry - Northern Soul

The next Soul night at “Club Caliente” in Peterborough will be on Friday 6th December 2013. Its our Christmas knees up and once again it's FREE entry so you just need a few of your festive pounds for a drink or two. This time we have resident DJ’s CARL FORTNUM and STEVE JAY (who have been with us since the beginning over 5 years ago), we are also pleased to be joined behind the decks by ‘No longer Mr early doors’ MICK BEEBY who is now by popular demand, playing some quality tunes later as the night unfolds. Russ and I kick the night off to warm things up starting with a few new purchases before we hand over. We will all be playing a quality mix of Northern Soul from the 60’s through the 70’s/80’s and beyond, 6ts Soul + R&B etc. — all QUALITY tunes from original vinyl.

The evening runs from 8pm to 1am - doors open from about 7.00pm for any thirsty/hungry early birds wanting bar &/or food or to reserve a table or one of the sofas. Music is from 8pm - or earlier once I’ve got the turntables up and running. For further details see the attached flyer, email back or call Russ on 0796 843 7250 .

Previous nights at Caliente:

Previously last time round (which was October 2013) we moved the decks down the other end of the room now that the venue refurb is well underway. This initially caught out a few regulars but with what seems more dance floor was well received from those in attendance. Great to our loyal band of regulars as well as some very welcome returners and hello to a few new faces! A couple of 50 count record boxes being passed round at the bar saw a few pounds exchanging hands leading to some interesting conversation from the anoraks! Mick Beeby played a blinder - even getting a text or two appreciation at the end of night whilst he helped us pack up. Once again great tunes all quality from both Steve Jay and Carl Fortnum - we are very privileged to have two great DJ/Collector/Jolly nice blokes here at Caliente. Russ and I filled in the gaps between Carl, Steve and Mick by double decking and turning a few heads with some 70's/Crossover (we are normally hard 60's but influences from Steve Jay in particular rubbing off on us!). A very enjoyable night was had by all - I always go by the good number still there at the last record and lights on to say that. Here is a link to this night:

Back in August for those not away on holiday we helped Birthday boy KEV DRAPER with his annual knees up birthday bash. Kev Draper was our main guest (obviously) and we helped him celebrate his birthday in style. Kev was joined behind the decks by STEVE JAY (no Carl this time as he was on holiday) and MICK BEEBY alongside Russ and I.

The July night at Caliente was a birthday night for Russ & I celebrating before the big five'O hits us both next year! Our special guest was ROB GRAY who played a blinder - best 6ts Northern spot I've heard for a long time. We were also entertained by STEVE JAY and CARL FORTNUM as well ‘Mr early doors’ MICK BEEBY who played some crackers having dug out a few lesser played 45's. [see link for review/feedback]

Back in May we had our 4TH ANNIVERSARY which was celebrated in style with a good turn out and some great music from our resident DJ’s CARL FORTNUM and STEVE JAY plus we had the welcome return of JOHN ALDRIDGE who once again pulled out some superb 6ts Soul including several very rare 45's. Good to see MICK BEEBY take up our request to play some tunes later on in the night rather than holding on to his early doors slot. Plenty of action on the dance floor, several anoraks hogging round the turntables (one advantage having the decks out in front) and a good number as always staying to the very last record. [see link for review/feedback]

Prior to May Caliente was in March with (a fully fit and recovered) CARL FORTNUM and fellow resident STEVE JAY who delivered the quality sounds from 60s/70s/80s and beyond that the regulars now expect from our nights at Caliente. We enjoyed BRETT SMITH so much last time round (stepping in for Carl) that we asked him back to be our main guest, we were not disappointed with the selections played by Brett. We feel proud to be doing our bit to help these younger guys give us their take on what needs playing out these days. MICK BEEBY covered the early doors session again playing some very nice 45’s prompting several of the regular early birds to ask if Mick can play a few of these tunes later on in the night? We agree, so this will happen on our May date. [see link below for photos]

For our Christmas Knees up we welcomed special guest for the night HAMMIE who pulled out some big ticket 45's as well as some cracking lesser knowns which kept the dance floor busy and encouraged a couple of us anoraks to have a look over the decks to see what was playing - one of the advantages of having the turntables out front in full view of the dancers and those propping up the bar. Unfortunately CARL FORTNUM was suffering from Man Flu (A47 strain - particularly nasty!) so in stepped (a not so young any more) BRETT SMITH with STEVE JAY being a great sport leaving his box(es) open for Brett to play a great set from. [see link below for photos]

Prior (to our December knees up) the last Caliente was in October with Russ, Carl, Steve and myself fresh back from our ‘Jolly Boys Outing” with all four of us DJ’ing at the Skegness Weekender. It was great also to see the return of PHIL RAINS and early doors support from Mick Beeby pulling out some lovely underplayed tunes from 60’s and 70’s.

I was thinking about dropping in on your night...is there a limit on the time you can get in? (wouldn't be there until about 10). Friendly crowd? -  as I'll be on my own.

Cheers

Full car heading over from Northants again for a night of drinking, dancing, chip butties, talking bollox, no doubt buying a few more records and other general shenanigans. We're looking forward to it.  :)

Hi Chris,

Entry is what ever time you can get there. FREE entry as well.

'Friendly crowd?' - see photos above and check the links to previous nights!! If wasn't a friendly crowd I wouldn't do it.

The venue opens from about 6pm and we arrive about 6.30pm to set up. Once the turntables are running we play some sounds (new buys, 'what does this sound like played out loud' etc..) as there is usually a few early birds in early (the bar is open early as well).

Music goes through til 1am so if you are not getting there til 10pm then still plenty of time.

See you later, Ray

Troop:

No doubt I'll be minding the back seat, if we get there in one piece then a good night will be had, now where's that A-Z, last time we went to the Wilton to see Debbie Taylor we nearly missed her, the sat nav HE insisted on using took us along the coastal route I think, Im sure we nearly fell off the land into the sea at one point :)

Blind trust in your electronic gadgets is not big or clever.

See you there folks.

Very funny  :glare: but I think you're getting me confused with "the one who saw you first"  :D

By the way, has anyone else enjoyed a lap of the neighbouring Park Homes estate when trying to find the Caliente?! I quite like it... especially all the speed bumps.

We had a great night as always, thanks very much.

Love where the speakers are now, in the rafters....Soul from heaven!

Danced loads to a real solid cross section of soul which spanned most tempos and genres. Lots of things I knew but as much that I didn't. Just how I like it.

I noticed towards the end of the night that we had once again been joined by Jack Daniels, so inevitably the stories coming from the rear of the car on way home were quite entertaining and more than a tad blue! :D

Have a great Christmas and we look forward to our next trip over in the New Year.

All the best,

Steve, Andy, Brian (the "Gouch" that stole Christmas)........& Jack Daniels

Great post Steve - thanks.

re the speakers up high - but did you spot the two big bass bins hidden near the fire exit? The owners of the club have splashed out with a decent new sound system that we can hook the turntables into. Sounded really good.

re the 'Gouch' the stories and jokes were flowing at the bar when I was talking to him! It would have been well worth a ride over to Northampton to hear the rest of the 'tales of the unexpected' !!

Cheers, Ray

Troop;

Had another great night in top company, one complaint, no bread to have with my chips, Ray if you can sort that mate, has to brown and thick enough to make butties, a loaf will fit nicely in your record box!

Yes it was very entertaining at times and many laughs were had, see you at the next one.

A 'Warburton's' extra thick white will be in one of the 50 count boxes at the bar next time!

Gald the trip over has been worth it.
