Great night last month .. probably one of my favourite nights ever in this secret little hideaway ,known and attended by those who are thirsty for proper soul music!

The place is getting a real buzz about it and the fact that Jumping Joan and big Phil are guesting next ,is testament to how serious the shades of soul are about making sure the punters get what they rightly deserve .. a top night of SOUL !

Be there or be disappointed ..free cd and good ol' Northern hospitality :)

Really enjoyed it, thanks again for the invite.

Still chuckling at Kev's "you Polish lads like a cuppa" and 'Dave'; it's usually the last name people get wrong. Absolutely pmsl.

High quality records, good club and genuinely nice people; can't grumble at that!

Headsy, how's your throat this morning? My lugs are still aching! Unbelievable lol

Hello folks - playlist from the last RAFA Club soul night follows with a bit of an extract from next month's newsletter - records speak for themselves really - top night.

What was good about the dj’s last month–well, they turned up mega early (7.45pm) and were so enthusiastic with their prescence and playlists of records. Mixing with everyone and saying hello to old and new friends–top people. Not to mention Tony (Joan’s partner) great guy, and so enthusiastic about the whole scene. Phil thought it was real hoot that I’d spelt his name wrong so many times especially as everyone seems to get his surname wrong–me, I called him Dave Therwell?? How the frig do you get that from Phil Threlfall, senior moments and fingers like a cows tits do not go very well with a small keyboard–move on...

Paul S. started the night off real early and included the likes of The Jades ~ “Lucky Fellow”, The Parisians ~ “Twinkle little star”,  The Seminoles ~ “You can lump it”, Royal ravens ~ “All over you” and The Cezannes ~ “All at once”. Col Denham followed for the start of the guest dj 30 minute slots and filled the room with sounds from The Wonderettes, Chamber bros, Lee Shot Williams ~ “Love now”, The Mamselles ~ “Open up your heart” and The Winstons ~ “Aint nothing like”. Following Col was Kev Cowey with The Spydels ~ “Dream Girl”, Monique ~ “If you love me”, Montclairs ~ “Hey you”, Pat & The Blenders etc. great stuff from the warm up dj’s. Joan started the main guest spots off with Edwin Starr’s “My kind of woman”, Billy Kennedy ~ “Sweet things”, E Rodney Jones ~ “Peace of mind”, Venturas ~ “Heart of love”, Exits ~ “Gotta have money”, Four Sonics ~ “Easier said than done”, Dynamics ~ “You make me feel good”, Sharpees ~ ”Tired of being lonely”, Steve Mancha ~ “Monday Thru’ Friday”, Bobby Guitar Woods ~ “Mighty Nice”, Hesitations ~ “That’s what love is”, Four Voices ~ “Your love keeps getting stronger” and finishing set 1 with Darrell Banks ~ “I’m the one who loves you”.

As usual Paul Ackley popped out a few new surprises namely The Overtones ~ “What would I do”, lonnett ~ “Blue Jeans”, Young Bros’ ~ “Baby”, Fred & Turbins ~ “Bernadine”, Soul Inc’ ~ “My proposal”, Eddie Billups ~ “Ask my heart”, Kings of Soul ~ “Is your love”, Antellects ~ “Love slave”, Admirations ~ “I want to be free” on Peaches, The Honeybees and finishing 30 mins of joy with Johnny Rodgers ~ “Make a change” - things were hotting up nicely... A great reaction to Paul and Joan’s playlist’s with Phil T following with Joseph Moore, Fascinators, Len Jewell, Ray Agee, The Lovers, The Intensions, Pee wee Shuck and Huey,Rose St John, Universals, Marvellos “Burning”, and finally the Demures “Teardrops” to end 1 1/2 hours of fantastic Northern soul.

The night went quite fast with a good support and Joan / Phil double decking from 11.00 to 12.00 midnight playing a superb set which included the likes of The Gambrells ~ “You better move”, Billy kennedy ~ “Groovy generation”, Dennis Edwards ~ “Johnny on the spot”, Lee Williams ~ “lost love”, Vee Gees ~ “Talking”, Young mods ~ “Who you gonna run too”, Foreign Blue renaissance, Mystiques ~ “Put out the fire”, Limitations ~ “I’m lonely”, Alcon Shades ~ “All is forgiven”, Monique ~ “I wouldn’t believe”, Little Stanley ~ Out a site lovin”, Willie & the Mighty Magnificents ~ “Funky 8 corners” how good was it to hear that again–best instru’ of the night and it got my toes twitching. Celeste hardy ~ “You’re gone” Precisions ~ “If this is love”, Del-tours ~ “Sweet and lovely”, ZZ Hill ~ Don’t make promises”, James Dockery ~ “Faith”, Masqueraders ~ “How”, Trent Sisters–”A Letter a day “ old Stafford sound not heard much in the NE for sure... The Seashells ~ “Quiet home” and finally Little Samson ~ “Don’t take your love.

My fave of the night was The Fascinators “In other Words” which has been one of my favourite records since the heady days of The Casino when Mr Searling played it out. Speaking of Heads–what the FOOK was Headsy on???? That man is a complete loon... Where did you put the flyers Geoff , no body could find them?? A colourful character to say the least but, he’s one or two colours short of a rainbow that’s for sure. Geoff if you’re in next month–behave yourself please, you frighten the locals. Another mention to Chrissy for taking the photo’s of the night and posting on Soul Source–keep it up please.

Joan and Phil finished off their fantastic contribution to the night at midnight and received a great applause for their efforts. Will they come again? I surely hope so–we’ll see ! I thanked Joan and Phil for everything and explained they could get away at midnight as they had a big drive home but, did they go–er no, “We’re staying ‘till the end said Joan–time to dance” Absolutely brilliant soul people.

Last hour and the two Paul’s finished off–a bit like the Two Ronnies really–looked like them too... So finishing the night off with Eddie Parker’s “Gone”, Glen Miller’s “Love”, Esther Phillips “Just say goodbye”, Jnr, McCants “Try me”, The Chosen Few “Birth of a playboy”, Four Sights “Love is a hurting game”, Bobby Hutton “Come see” and finishing with Dave Thomas ~ I’ll always need you (by my side)” ~ Prime So thanks for the support folks, SO IT’S GOOD NIGHT FROM ME AND.... IT’S GOODNIGHT FROM HIM.. GOODNIGHT!

firstly apologies to all, I do know there is a line between enjoying yourself and spoiling it for others and I crossed that line,

I gave Dave the flyers back and did explain it was a bit of fun, all within 5 minutes of doing it.

however, last thing I want to do is spoil things so no worries will not be back again, as I do not want others to be uncomfortable, I would like to think anybody who knows me knows it is just my harmless way of winding down and I dont mean anything by it.

apologies once more and can we leave it at that.

Headsy  - you do not spoil anything - see at the next one with Colin Laws and Lenny Harkins - you know you'll want to say hello. Chin up and dance.
