Rafa Club Serious Shades of Soul Details

6th April 2013 and The Rafa Club welcomes Colin Law and Lenny Harkins from Bonnie Scotland to be main guest DJ's with local DJ Glen Walton backing up the promoters. It's gonna be another night of rare and underplayed Northern soul with Paul & Ian Shoulder, and Paul Ackley slotting in where needed.

Last month saw JumpinJoan and Phil T (Dave) as guest dj's and Colin and Lenny need to up the game to meet the crowds expectations. It will be a no holds barred affair for sure.

£2.50 O.T.D. + the newsletter and free cd. Colin and Lenny have already sent a list of records for the cd and it is a cracker.....

So 7.30pm is the start through 'till 1.00am. The dj's will always play for the crowd so don't be afraid to request records as our policy is "If it's requested and we have it - we'll play it". The punter comes first with the dance floor.

Hope to see some new faces - sa ya there.

Paul.

I cant wait to come back down here again, when I was asked bet Paul, I jumped at the chance. And explained to Colin that this was a bunch of people that really knew their stuff. Its been 15 to 20 years since myself an Jim Tennant used to go away to America (pre internet days) and come down and lay on this crowd what we thought was he business...and shite or not it was always appreciated.

I lost touch over the year with the real new stuff, but I'll be playing the records from that era....the stuff we loved . forgotten Stafford , shotts stuff, all phil Wainrights records from congelton......the best of gear,.... and well Colin , he speaks for his self....just google the Notations on Tad, the old belle and the Blackjacks......the best of gear. I aways remember Paul Ackley was just that one step ahead of us back then, so I really look forward to his stuff.

I look forward to seeing the old faces, Colin, Daz, Baz, Coney....Fuckin Brilliant

Great to see you all on saturday, got to agree Davy, thought Colin and Lenny did a great job and their unbounded enthusiasm playing more upfront stuff certainly set the tone....nobody can accuse the RAFA of sitting on the fence of late!

see you all saturday

SORRY FOR THE LATE REPORT FOLKS -----

Another iconic night at The Rafa Club Newton Aycliffe last month as Lenny Harkins and Colin Law ripped up the place with fantastic sets of Northern soul bringing a new sharp edge to Rafa’s growing reputation for rare / underplayed Northern soul music. It was great to see Colin and Lenny hand out freebie cd's promoting their "Sounds of blackness" weekender in August 2013 at Peebles - this looks like it's going to be one the best weekenders in the UK this year - so get along for that too.

Typical records played from the “Sounds of Blackness” boys were:

The Notations–Trying my best to find her, Mac Staten and the Nomads–There she goes, Eddie Daye–Lean on me, Ricky Allen–Cut you loose, John Harris–Hanging in, Darrow Fletcher–Secret Weapon, Anubis–Ecology, Hopkins Bros’ - Shake Cheri, The Bluenotes–We can make it, Blinky–It’s gonna be always, The Ebony's–Do you like the way I love, The Appreciations–It’s better to cry, Frankie Karl and the Chevrons Boy next door (flip to You should ‘o held on), Johnny Praye–Can’t get too much, Kings of soul–Is your love for me, Sonny Till–I gave it all up, Pee Wee Shuck and Huey–Beside myself, Louis Paul–The change will do you good, Johnny Hampton–Not my girl. Sonny Herman–What about me, Empires–You’re on top girl, Jimmy Jay–You better head on, El Anthony–We’re gonna make it, Kim Weston–After the rain, Tammi Terrel–Tears at the end of a love affair (Unissued acetate), Brooks Bros–Looking for a woman, Ivory’s–Please stay, Martha Starr–I’m lonely.

We also had Glen Walton on display as he filled in between Colin and Lenny adding to the cacophony of dance music blasting out through the speakers and listed below are some of Glen’s contributions of the night : Technics–Hey Girl, Vonns–So many days, Arnells–Heart repair shop, New Yorkers–Don’t wanna be your fool, Sylvia Thomas–At last, Sonny Daye–Long road to happiness, Tommy Yates–Something’s gotta give.

Paul and Ian Shoulder with Paul Ackley (Promoters) backing the guests to keep everything rolling along smoothly kept the dance floor busy - this venue is the last regular bastion of rare soul in the north east - so get along for a great night of Northern Soul, great venue, great people, great music. Please note next month (4th May) we have to finish at 12.00 midnight but back to 1.00am finish on the 1st June when we have special guests - "THE WILLINGHAMS".
