Some great events in May folks and something for everyone , European soul at Jabez Clegg was fantastic

and a must for next year (god willing ) , anyway on to June and CCS at the Black Lion, 45s played on original vinyl with the only qualification is that what is played you can dance to .so if your bag is anything from club soul to rarer tunes with a good helping of Motown and R &b , a great atmosphere , great people ,real ale and for £3 !!! ,we hope to see you there

Well hello CCS crew!!

Lovely to see you have already got the chat underway in readiness for this month at City Centre Soul!  Good to see you are adding to your collections boys...nothing  better for the dancer and listener than to be surprised here and there, and it sounds like you could well all have a little something special up your sleeves. Really looking forward to welcoming Alan back as guest...as a regular attender he knows just what we like and went down a storm last year.  It has been a busy few weeks for us out and about too... great weekends in London (Hole in the Wall) and Sheffield (Victory and Bessemer) Manchester (Twisted Wheel and Greatstone, Denton and Ramsbottom) where it's been a great mix of DJing and dancing for  Woody and me....well he's the DJ (I know my place lol!!) but occasionally when he's not behind the decks I get to dance with him too. Even got a kiss from someone 'famous' in King Bee Records the other week too!

So bring on the 22nd that's what I say....I will be updating a lot of bits on FB and SS over the next few days too so watch this space..

Will be back soon,

Miss T XX

Hey Frank...not sure the internet is ready for yours and Derek's exploits recorded on camera!!  Expect there's been some beer drunk wherever you've been out and about! Well me and Woody spent Sunday afternoon down at the Black Lion sorting out the equipment and testing out some new decks, pretty pleased with the purchase and everything seems to be in order so now we can look forward to another great night on 22nd. Alans done us some brilliant spots before now, so everything's pointing to another great night of soul sounds....am expecting a few surprises from all the DJs alongside all the favourites and classic tunes. Something for everyone that's what we aim for...roll on the 22nd! Getting excited now!

Well it's a massive hi to all the team at the Black Lion and the Sheffield branch of City Centre Soul is reporting in for duty, Miss "T" has excelled herself with her cinematic skills and a Palme d'or may well be in the offing and Saturdays event is once again starting to be looking like another scorcher with some of the very best across the board soul music you are likely to find anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere and this month play list reviews from Woody, Frankie "M" and the lovely Miss "T" goes to show you what a broad canvas of music "The Black Lion" showcases.

Well it should be summer outside but if the weather is anything like my neck of the woods where you are your heating will be on full blast and the patio furniture you bought last year for next years summer is still in the garage or under the green covers you bought just in case you need them (well you never know) and the night are looking like they are already starting to draw in (longest day is the 21st of June that's this Friday) and in this years in the two days of British summer weather we've had i still managed to incinerate the skin of my back in the time honored tradition of "i won't be in the sun long enough to burn me" and like every year that has gone before i managed to do just that. okay so i've said it judge me as you will, So here goes with the first three records in this months reviews form the very comprehensive record collection of Mr Sunshine himself no other than Woody

The Chocolate Boys "Voltaire Pier" Omega Records/UK Release on Decca Records

Well here is a Euro instrumental offering from 1974 by Belgian session music players "The Chocolate Boys" who were if the story is correct sometime members of the James Last orchestra and if you didn't know better you could well think you were listening to a Ramsey Lewis track and indeed the sound is so akin to one of his cuts the record got covered as him in the days when people used to do that. This is a shuffler of a tune that that is very much in a Latin Jazz style that has some sweet piano work and a simple arrangement but on the cool scale this i way below freezing and lends it's self to that "Black Lion vibe"

Wakefield Sun "Get Out" MGM Records"

Turning the Harold Melvin staple from a mid-tempo floater to a full weight stomper that never lets up from the first bar to the last and you'll not be surprised that in it's day this was a big Wigan Casino spin, and a great version that make a nice change from the original but to all you dancer out there just make sure you have a chair ready for when you have finished you'll need it and don't forget to check out Wakefield's other venture into the world of Northern Soul "Trypt On Love" is well worth a listen and "Get Out" on a nice original MGM demo can still be yours for under £40 but the convalescent home you'll might need to recover in will cost you a lot more dancer discretion is advised.

Harvey "Anyway You Wanna" Tri Phi Records

From Detroit R&B Soul legend and a list of other music related things Harvey Fuqua "Anyway You Wanna" is very much an old school club spin, hiting the floor running comes this semi novelty record from 1962 with "monkey chatter vocals" and a peppering of dance style name checks thrown in for good measure in it's day passed over on original release and at best only becoming a local mid table hit but like so many other record before it gaining massive exposure later on the Soul Scene and for the second time in this evening this record has something of a Latin Jazz feel to it, with it's catchy horn work and a infectious rhythm this is a tune that you can always remember the "Suki Suki" part even if you forget everything else an enigmatic record that almost defies description, catchy, kooky or just plain strange think i'd better let you decide.

Back on line just thrown a bucket of coal on to the fire and powered the old computer up better late than never as they say. Well a very good evening to you Frank and your playlist will be getting the once over tomorrow and as always it's looking pretty good, On a slightly different note we have had our third day of sunshine on this side of the Snake and at this stage we've beaten last years summer already.

well talking of weather here a little story entitled

Hot and Cold

After his exam the doctor said to the elderly man, "You appear to be in good health" Do you have any medical concerns you would like to ask me about?

"In fact, I do," said the old man, "After I have sex I am usually cold and chilly, and then, after I have sex with her the second time, I am usually hot and sweaty."

After examining his elderly wife, the doctor said: "Everything appears to be fine. Do you have any medical concerns that you would like to discuss with me?"

The lady replied that she had no questions or concerns. The doctor then said to her: "Your husband had an unusual concern. He claims that he is usually cold and chilly after having sex with you the first time, and then hot and sweaty after the second time. Do you know why?"

"Oh that stupid old man," she replied. "That's because the first time is usually in January and the second time is in August"

So moving on and here are three more from the "Man In The Hat" Woody and these three go to show you that The Black Lion really can mix their music like the best of 'em..

Flower Shoppe "You've Come a Long Way Baby" Spring Records/ released in the UK on Polydor Records

Argh i remember this record so very well and the debate left in it's trail as to was it or wasn't it soul (never mind Northern Soul) but a massive record in it's day that was a sure fire floor filler, with a bright and airy feel to it and the gimmick  "Rock-a-by-baby intro" this candy sweet slice of Blued Eyed Soul  from 1971 was always a winner, with simple lead vocals and harmonies this is a great summer sound that really does capture that feel good feeling that you just can't put into a bottle but if you just listen a little harder and you can hear a lot more going on than first impressions might suggest, there are some pretty accomplished horns and percussion work all lurking away in the background but just so understated, an evergreen disc if ever there was one and still pretty cheap on both USA and UK releases.

Geater Davis "My Love Is So Strong For You" House Of Orange Records"

Funk meets hard soul and creates a class helping of Ghetto vinyl attitude that pack a kick like a bionic mule into three minuets of play time, if you wanna strut and pound a dance floor like the coolest of the brothers, look no further than Geater Davis and this superb and underrated 70's release, with a somewhat raw vocal take and hard edged production this groover has all the elements of song far bigger than it's total sum, a mid tempo wake up call that need the volume turning up just a few notches higher powerful brass section and foot tapping appeal by the bucket full and a more modern take on that oh so special "Black Lion Sound" and yet one more 45' on my wants list.

Jimmy Cliff "Waterfall" A&M Records/Released in the UK on Island Records

From reggae artist Jimmy Cliff comes this 1968 up tempo offering and if my memory serves me correctly an entry into a some type of Caribbean take on the Eurovision song contest and this was the entry i'm surmising from Jamaica but that aside Waterfall is catchy and well produced with a thumping back beat and good orchestration this was again was a huge record that was played everywhere i seemed to go that just seemed to get over exposed and then like so many great records implode on its self and stop getting played and then only to get a a new lease of like a few years later, happy, poppy and full of fun now that's what you call a record.

Hello my fellow CCS crew members...great to see that the literary and creative talent of Mr. Adams is still flourishing and he is pulling out some great reviews of some of our selections, by way of getting us all in the mood. Following my recent tussle with a very uneven floor, a restaurant doorway and a heavy glass door I may well not be dancing this weekend...unless of course there are large quantities of painkillers on the go. However, as standing up is the only movement that doesn't hurt at present you will find me in my usual position standing at the top of the stairs with a smile (or grimace depending on how I improve!) and a friendly greeting...CCS at the Black Lion Salford is a friendly little venue with an intimate atmosphere and we welcome allcomers to enjoy a great selection of soul records all played on lovely original vinyl.  What more can I say...except that its gonna be a great night!

See you all Sat, love Miss T (or Calamity Jane as Woody likes to call me!)  X

In the enforced absence of Sheffield crew member Russ I toyed with the idea of having a go at reviewing myself...but as I really only know what I  like when i hear it, and despite many months of training from Woody I simply cannot improve my memory, its probably not a good idea.  So hopefully Russ will return real soon to do the business for us....come back Russ, we miss youuuuu!!

Well a very good evening team and my appoloiges for last nights missing post, i had somehow managed to pick up the " Cheryl Cole Computer Virus" it has no real function but makes a pretty desk top and after a full de-bugging and re-installation sesssion and a load of other stuff that concered a lot of swearing and shouting some hours later the computer was fixed and a special thanks goes to my brotherTim for doing the honours, computers and me really just don't mix.

computer8.jpg

Well here goes tonights record review for CCS main team man the one and only Frankie "M' and as always F.M is right on the money with his record picks so here goes for tonights selections.

Sharpees "Tired Of Being Lonely"  One-derful Records UK release on Stateside Records and President Records

A subtle and right on slice of Chicago produced soul from 1963 that has a fully worked soul sound to it well and shows just how far in front of the competition this recording was as this sound would remain untouched as created by the Sharpees well into the late 60's, very much an old school mover with charismatic lyrics and tight and complimentry vocal harmonies this MOD sound has even more to offer with a nice back beat rhythm and some tasty brass work this is a clever and well thought out record that is pure Frankie "M" both a cooler and warmer up of a spin and a welcome addition to any play list and did i mention i have a copy on Stateside?

The Rance Allen Group " There's Gonna Be A Showdown" The Gospel Truth (Record Company)

Perhaps not as well known as the 1969 release from Archie Bell And The Dells come this gospel influenced take by The Rance Allen Group from 1972 just listed to the opening lines of this song and the message is apparant but that in no way detract from the presence of this record and i'm putting my neck on the line with this one an i saying this is the definitive version and in my opion is far better without the Archie Bell "jive ass" intro. wht we have left is a great mover of a record and a dancers delight a great 70's floor filler. Race Allen hits some high falsetto notes and his vocal is laden with pure passion and energy and a nice working of keyboards that just move this version to a higher level. I rember this being a very available record to buy but supplies seem to be getting far thinner on the ground now if you see a copy it might just be worth buying as you might have to wait a long time to see another one

Smokey Robinson And The Miracles "If You Can Want" Tamla records UK Release On Tamla Motown Records

A pure Smokey Robinson track if ever there was one from the first few bars you're in no doubt who the vocalist is on this track,(Smokey also wrote and produced the disc as well) a nice brassy backing that you would expect from the Motown stable but perhaps the only surprise being some high profile Conga Drums....okay they might be Bongo's but you'll get the idea."If You Can Want" is a simple but great example of the talents of Smokey Robinson as vocalist, writer and producer. A mid tempo Motown offering that oozes a smooth and very rich soul sound.

Once again sorry for the delay.

Thanks for the positive  feedback fellas  and proof that i really should have taken more interest in school....oh how different thing might have been, well at this stage the computer is still holding up so we're stoked up for yet another review of classic tunes that are on offer at this Saturday soul event at The Black Lion brought to you by the the CCS team.

Well the sun is shining at the moment but with the hit and miss British weather we're having there seems to be very little said about global warming or the melting of the polar ice caps and the planet going into melt down but can we really trust the research we're been given or do we have a more acurate method to judge check out the photo below and see what you think.

 global-warming_zpsb60b82dd.jpg

So without further ado here are Frankie's last three discs from his playlist...here goes.

Bobby Moore "Chained To You Heart" Checker Records

A high octane thumper that has that esential driving beat that say's it's "Northern Soul" and not just Soul, moving along at a high rate of knots with a throbing brass section and a very pounding beat a dancer of a tune that was always a favourite at so many venues and althought not being an out and out stomper and topping the 100 mph mark "Chained To You Heart" does break the speed limit by quite a few miles per hour and has enough energy in it's production to power a small town,  a massive spin for a small time but this is no way a reflection on the records class but just simply proving that there were so many great tunes out there at that time that the life of a dance floor filler was often short lived simply because a new song would come along to displace it, so under palyed today and well worth reviving,

Joe Tex "All The Heaven A Man Really Needs" Dial Records

Okay so Joe Tex was a little prone to the long spoken intro (just check out Under Your Powereful Love) but in context this works well possibly because the running time of this track is only 3:04 long and the delivery is given is par excellence, now if you're trying to capture the magic of that last dance with All The Heaven A Man Really Needs does just that and to use the word smootcher to describe this track fit it to a tee, with a great and well finished 70's production that is so so smooth and the layed back vocal from Joe Tex that come over like the finest of old wine, nice flowing lyrics that can pull on the heart strings of even the most manly of the men folk just remember guy's the tears in your eyes are just a touch of hay fever.

Otis And Carla Band "Tramp" BGT Records

A differnt take on the Otis Redding and Carla Thomas soul staple from 1967 and this time in instrumental form that has a far later release date and comes from a 1999 cut that was released in 2003, now details about this record are a little thin on the groung but it pretty much a safe bet to say the name is a homage to the original version of the song performed by Otis and Carla and there is no Stax involvement in this production but that apart what we have here is a very tidy version of this solid gold soul standard with a slightly harder edge to the record than the original with a heavier drum beat and more up front horns this is a well crafted take on a well known and respected piece of classic soul but it works well and if any thing give the original very much a run for it's money.

Hi Everybody,

what great night again down here at The Black Lion, great spots from all DJ's. Special thanks to our special guest DJ Alan Coulton, played some crackin' tunes. Awesome spots from our man Frank, three or four Ska sounds & loads of club classics kept the dance floor full during his last spot 1:00am till 1:30am. Thanks to the lovely Miss T for the door duties, always a kind welcome & lovely smile as you come in. Massive thanks from Me, Miss T & Frank to all who attended, you made it another fantstic night, thanks again Everybody.

Don't forget we'll be back on the 24th of August with special guest DJ Barry Tasker from Soul In The Cellar at The Great stone Hotel, should be another belter. See you all out & about soon Everybody, cheers for now, Woody  :hatsoff2:
