Hi Folks,

think the music played at our venue has broken the boundaries of your average soul night, whilst keeping with our across the board  policy. Many's the time  i have heard someone say " not heard that for a while ", & I believe we offer  a mixed selection that changes from month to month, but includes loads favourite tunage of the soul folk who attend , all new faces are always welcome and  they do come down to see us on a regular basis.

This Christmas we offer a late licence while 2:00am, Six Djs in venue thats bang in the middle of the city, thats six hours of fantastic soulful sounds all on lovely original vinyl, catch you in a bit, Woody  C.C.S.

Have to agree there with you Woody,

The City Centre Soul team have done a sterling job in a very small period of time not only have you managed to create your own musical identity but also you have also broken some exciting new sound onto the soul scene that are now getting nationwide exposure and most importantly delivering an excellent night at "The Black Lion" for all in the process, well done!

Hi Russ,

thanks for the kind words, I would'nt go that far, all we do is play to the dance floor &  our fantstic supporters, all on original vinyl (no £5.00 shite pressings etc....), thats why it always says  "A Night Of Real Northern Soul" at the top of the page. We've also done our best to stick to our A.T.B music policy, as in trying to play something for everyone & not to get too samey, mix it up a bit. Anyway we seem to be doing things right so far so.......

Hello again Everybody,

as you've probably gathered really through no fault of their own The Black Lion's hads to close down again to do with one thing & another (read about it in "Salford On Line News") & as you've also probably gathered after just over two years of fantastic Soul Nights there we're gutted  .

So onwards & upwards as they say & as it says above "City Centre Soul's Christmas Bash" for one night only is now taking place at "Crumpsall Labour Club" on Wilton Road just off Crumpsall Lane (Wilton Road's the one next to The Cleveland Pub) . We did a Birthday Party there a few months ago, great venue nice private upstairs room with it's own Bar, nice large sized dance floor, plenty of seating & one of the best things is the drinks are "Working Mens Club Prices"..... oh joy :P.

Here we are then bringing "Big City Soul" out to the suburbs,  same format as last year, loads of Guest DJ's playing top Northern from way back when right up to currant plays, quaity raffle prizes, free CD's & as usual a few surprises in store......  :shades: .

Come down & check us, always a warm welcome to friends old & new & great  friendly atmosphere, catch you all again soon Folks Woody & Miss T   C.C.S. :hatsoff2:

Great venue and a pity to lose it but above all its the people that matter most and "City Centre Soul" just moves camp for the time being but the most important thing Is the Xmas bash still goes ahead same formula as before just old wine in a new bottle.

Well a change of venue and no need to panic so it's business as usual and here is the first installment of our record review for some of the sounds you're very likely to hear at The Crumpsall Labour Club, from Old King Cole's right hand man no other than the one and only Woody.

Diane Pane "What Side your Bread Is Buttered On" Logo Records

A massive helping of the finest sweet Northern Soul from 1962, wow and what a sound it is with a fantastic vocal by Diane Pane and also helped along by a superb musical arrangement and production, surely this record has to be up there with all the finest of the Popcorn dancers with it's distinct musical connections to similar sounds by the Drifters (does this remind anyone of "This Magic Moment" or is that just me?) and a host of other vocal groups from the 50's and early 60's but this in no way detracts from the sheer quality of this tune. "What Side your Bread Is Buttered On" has a full studio orchestra and perhaps with even a few more musicians thrown in for good measure and with a section of great strings that are nicely just slightly muted and layered under a powerful blanket of kettle drums, a class spin and my top contender for an underplayed soul gems, just watch out for the abrubt ending to the song it stops on a sixpence.

Hi Russ and team...

I have to echo all that has been said about the Black Lion...we have lost not only a great little venue but more importantly, because I agree that it is the people who matter most, the great crew at the pub who have been avid supporters of what we have tried to do.  They have all contributed hugely to the success of the nights, particularly this year, and from letting us have a free hand in organising the room to storage of our PA gear to supplying really friendly bar staff, regular advertising through their own networks and putting up with the talc they have to be seen as an important part of the team effort. This team effort has been complemented by a lovely crowd of supportive regulars and loads of new faces at each event.  So it is indeed onwards and upwards with all members of the team working flat out to make the Christmas event a fantastic night for all.

So thanks in advance for the support for flyering from our many friends and supporters who always work so hard at getting the night on the map - I think we have all the best components for a real Christmas Cracker of a party - great new venue (even if temporary), great DJs, great food, great tunes, great Black Lion atmosphere and great end to a very successful year for CCS  (Did I mention the word great/!!)

Miss T XX (still PA to the DJ but working too hard to contribute as much as I would like)

Actualy I think you did Darlin,

well done, "Great" post..... (lol). Yeah, all the great staff at The Black Lion bent over backwards to help out whenever they could, Our Soul Nights, atmosphere & Venue would'nt have been what it was without their fantastic help & input. If you've read the full story in Salford On Line News about the closure you realize it was the bloody Brewery who let them down, were at fault & forced them into closure.

Anyway Christmas is just round the corner & "C.C.S are still on & up for it" on Saturday the 21st of next month, certainly will be another Christmas Cracker Me thinks, speak again soon Folks, Woody  C.C.S.

Well a very good evening to you Miss T,

I must also say how how important the staff were at The Black Lion and really were extra members of the CCS team and did a great job in helping to create the atmosphere that was one of the fantastic things about the old venue (i'm now using old venue) and so very important and something that can be very hard to create well done to all involved you were excellent.

And of course not forgetting The Black Lion supporters who have been there come hail or shine and i cannot  praise your dedication highly enough for you commitment but with your continued support CCS will still continue to be a success when it finds a new home and who knows maybe even bigger than it was.

Russ

PS, Miss T you didn't say great that many times i could have got quite a few more in!

Hello Team,

Hope your internet gets fixed soon Russ...can't be doing with the fiddly phone thing myself for long! So post is much appreciated. Starting to really feel the Christmas spirit coming on, Mr. Wood has put in his requests to Santa for lots of lovely new (original....old lol!) vinyl. He might have to dream on for some of them...but me and Santa are working closely together to make this one, one to remember!  I've got some plans on the go to create the Christmas buffet for 21st and a CD cover to design. And in between still 3 weeks of work to fit in and a house to re-wire! Sure am busy....but wouldnt have it any other way.

Be sure and join us on 21st December from 7.30pm at our temporary Christmas home....its going to be yet another great night at CCS.  All welcome and hoping to see all our regular faces too....maybe see some of you at the Greatstone this coming weekend.

Not long now, 3 weeks and counting...

Evening Miss T and the team,

The computer is fully up and running now (so more of the same folks, hey why change now i say you've put up with this for all this time) but before we start i just need to clarify a point,

Shouldn't that not read "Four Of Manchester's finest DJ's and an average one from Sheffield?" very kind of you Woody to hold me in such high esteem i'll take the compliment.

:

But here's a quick story just to set the festive mood.

On the first Christmas, the first of three Wise Men stepped carefully into the stable but sank his golden slipper into a big pile of manure.

”Jesus Christ!” he yelled.

The woman beside the manger turned to her husband and said, “Now, Joseph, isn’t that a better name for the kid than. Cyril?”

Okay so let get down to business with some more reviews from the "Woody Collection", and might i say we have yet another CRACKER!

Art Gentry "Merry-Go-Round" Onyx Records

Crashing in at almost speed of sound come this 1960's whirlwind dancer (i believe once covered up by a well respected Northern Soul DJ as "Round And Round" by Spencer Wiggins and indeed the title i first knew this disc by) but cover ups aside this seem to sum up all the quintessential qualities of what a Northern Soul record should be, fast and packed full of "get up and go" with a high octane intro and pulsing beat that doesn't let up from a moment backed by a wave of solid brass that thumps along for just 2:25 but with all this packed into this in such a short time you really do have enough energy to power a small town with a tight vocal by Art Gentry and an even tighter production this is yet another spin that might take off in a big way, prices are already starting to pick up on this and decent copies are getting snapped up by the people in the know and in the hay day of the 100 mph stopmper that wouldn't have been an option but yet another great tune that just missed out.

Evening Fellas and a massive hi to Miss T,

And thanks for your positive comments guy's and understanding natures when i start to go off tangent in a big way and a record review turns out to be anything but that but we're back on the same page and up and running now i have full internet warp drive again, so team and you CCS followers out there as we said yesterday it's business as usual or "more of the same old same old" that might be a more accurate way to describe things
Y
canvas_zps312a9bc4.png

Well here is tonights review, if you've stayed with us this far you might as well stay that little bit longer "in for a penny" as the saying goes.

Tracy Dey "Go Away" Amy Records

Seeming almost forgotten now but in the early to mid 1960's Tracy Dey was a popular American TV performer and a pretty prolific recording artist releasing nine solo singles between 1962 and 1966 with many of her tunes were written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio who was the keyboardist and main songwriter for The Four Seasons and massive song writers in their own right but that as they say is another story.

"Go Away" is a track from 1964 and was the "B" side to "Gonna Get Along Without You Now" that was indeed a Bill Board top 100 hit and reaching number 51 in that year and becoming her highest career charting single, "Go Away" is quite a a stand alone song on it's own and i believe and would have been a worthy release on it's own merits but as a flip side this is a pretty nice offering and has a very sweet "Blue Eyed Soul" feel to it (so sweet in fact that in parts i seem to be getting strong musical washes of the song "White Horses" by Jackie Lee [the British female singer of that name who later went on to record the theme for the TV cartoon series Rupert as Jacky and as a backing singer she provided the backing vocals for such global number ones as " Green Green Grass Of Home" by Tom Jones and "Release Me" by Englebert Humperdink) but in this case it seem that Tracy had the original tune by a good 12 months so any parody is not from her.

A mid-tempo shuffler on the Amy record label starting from a rolling drum introduction and an intense musical opening 10 seconds with it's bitter sweet vocal with a huge helping of "girlness" in the lyrics this is a nice production by Bob Crew and has that (dare i say this?) a massive youth club feel to it but the production is a worthy Bob Crew contender and ranks up there with a lot of his other work, a well layered tune that is far more than just girl pop a closer listen will prove this point there are some impressive sweeping strings and a subtle orchestra at work that doesn't over stepping the mark, different and very under played and a record really off the soul radar.

xmas-animated-frosty-in-the-hot-tub_zps9

So without further ado lets see what is in Woody vinyl sack for this evening.

Little Walter "I Don't Play" Checker Records (original release on the red Checker label and not the later label shown in the video)

Well you really don't get more deep down and dirty hardcore Rhythm'N'Blues than this offering from Little Walter (born Marion Walter Jacobs) recorded in 1961 and a prime example of the Chicago Blues genre recorded on the Checker label that was a subsidiary to the Chess label from Chicago Illinois and it's style is apparent with some hard hitting harmonica riffs and (wow that boy could play that harp) simple backing that i seem to think has Willie Dixon doing a fine spot of Blues guitar on it and produced by him as well as co-writing this number with a raw vocal by Little Walter that pulls no punches but works so very well. And If you like a song with attitude that is as cool as a Penguins bottom you've hit gold short and sweet and a full stop ending bang on the 2:14 mark and i'm wanting to say "a pure Black Lion sound" but you get my drift.

Glad you like 'em Woody,

You are more than welcome both yourself and Miss T are great friends (and of course Frank) so it's no more than you would do for me if needed and any job is always better when it is appreciated.

Well the high winds we've had today have finally calmed down and have been replaced with some pretty heavy rain but but just spare a thought for this couple

Funny-cartoon-Damn-its-windy_zps8ffae60f

So here is this evenings offering once again from the vinyl vaults of Woody

Smokey Robinson & The Miracles " The Soulful Shack" Lifted Track on Woody's 45' record Label (Original release Tamla Records from the LP "Make It Happen"

From the 1967 Tamla records Album "Make It Happen" comes this album only track that perhaps strangely never got released on single (apart from the rare "Woody's 45' lifted release) and mores the pity and showing just how good Smokey Robinson was not just as a singer but as a talented song writer from the very first few bars you can pick up that certain Motown flavour and that is apparent with the entire song some nice harmonies and a thumping back beat making this a class Motown dancer and once again showing how much quality music the Motown Record Company had at their finger tips. With a very customary and distinctive Smokey Robinson vocal helped along by a rich backing track you really do need to ask yourself why such a great dancer of a record is quite a rarity outside the soul scene today oh more of the strange world of Northern Soul"

And just for the trivia buffs among us, this album was later retitled and re-released as "The Tears Of A Clown" with the same cover when "The Tears Of A Clown" became a massive number 1 hit in late 1970 early 1971 and contains the original version of "My Love Is Your Love" later covered by the Isley Brothers and there's more "The Soulful Shack" track can also be found on a the British Music For Pleasure album called "The Fantastic Smokey Robinson & The Miracles"

With all the power of an asthmatic cockroach i'm back again for yet another thrilling installment of of this months CCS record round review in my defence i would have posted earlier but the Soul Source auto-save hasn't auto-saved so my pre-prepared entry must have only be kept for so long therefor future plans of building a stock of reviews up has gone down faster than a cheap bottle of Christmas Sherry that's been left with your old Aunty Flo.

"Oh how times have changed"

Well as the time get ever nearer to the 21st i'd better get on with yet another cracking sound from the festive sack of Woody so here goes!

Kenny Ballard & The Fabulous Brothers"I'm losing You" Roulette Records

Kenny Ballard was very much a man of many talents from a being a singer, writer and even the occasional producer and his name appears on many records to come out of New York and although his own record output was small around 5 singles at most all are to a pretty high standard in fact i don't think he made a bad record "I'm losing You" is no exception, this cut come from 1966 on Roulette Records (we could write a full book on this record company) but in brief for those of you that might not know too much about them.

Roulette Record and their links to organised crime are well known in fact the CEO Morris Levy, a known New York Mobster and was in turn a business front for the Mafia controlled Genovese Crime family, Tommy James of Tommy James And The Shondells fame who recorded on the label along with a very impressive list of other such as Count Basie, Sammy Davis Jr, Joey Dee, James estimates that the label kept between $30 million to $40 million of the group's royalties, Levy's reputation was such that what he said really went and was once said "to make Berry Gordy look like a saint" now that's a statement!

Well getting back on track  Kenny now has changed his singing style in a very big way we now have a pretty light "falsetto" and is poles apart from his first single release on Toy Records "I Wanna Love You" a deep soul offering from 1963.

With its fact paced tempo and instant dancer beat we have a great slice of New York Soul and as mentioned a light but pleasant vocal by Kenny Ballard with some tight horns and pulsing drums with some nice top rolls that really help to give the song a little extra lift and so here is somewhat of a juiced up hi- octane mover and a sound not heard too often today but mores the pity on that count!

Well, hello team!

Writing this on the train down to London cos me and Woody are having a few days R and R in the Capital before we get everything ready for next weekend at crumpsall.  Very excited about Woody's upcoming spot at the Hole in the Wall Soul Club in Euston tomorrow...Glen their host came and played Black Lion in April this year and gave us a real treat with his great collection and we always have a great time at the Club whenever we can get down there .  So its great that Woody has been invited to show them what he can do.  As the PA I just have to make sure that he is well dressed for the occasion and gets on the right train at the right time etc so, so far all appears to be in order!  Its great to see what a response we've had to the last minute changes for the Christmas bash...am certain that all who join us at 7.30 on Saturday  21st December, at Crumpsall Labour club will not be disappointed. Looks like its shaping up to be a night to remember!

Will try to make sure that Woody comes back from the Smoke in one piece and is refreshed and ready for the biggest night in the City Centre Soul calendar

Keep up all the good work, team...

Well a very good evening Miss T,

I'm sure you're going to have a great weekend and of course next Saturday it's the CCS Christmas bash so looking forward to that haven't sorted out my records yet but in my usual style i'll leave everything to the last minute.

Miss T, try not to be to disturbed in the big city of London on the whole the people are very friendly and all of them claim to what is called "Cockneys", some do speak a type of English but this is often limited due to the effect of their diet and the prolonged consumption of jellied eels and mash that they eat four times a day and sometime a food item called a "Saveloy Sausage" these are vivid red in colour and should be avoid at all costs (although these are safe to eat if your a vegetarian as they contain no meat, only rusk and chemicals) this is often drank with what is locally known as beer, do not confuse this with the Northern drink of the same name it bears very little resemblance to it apart from colour. All "Cockney's" drive black taxi's and have a story to tell about Barbara Windsor "when they had her in the back of der cab"

product-enlarged_zpsca3f7bb1.jpg

A typical Londoner, aka a "Cockney"

"God bless ya all, Lawd above! apples an' pears i'm a decen' girl i am an' yer a proper geezer eer whats in yer bag mister?.Mi ould man, bless him knew da Krays, Ronnie an' Reggie pair ov gentleman slash yer face wiv a razor but never swawer in fron' ov ladies always nicely turned aaaht they were, Gawdon bleedin' Bennet! not like today i miss da good old days Lor' luv a bleedin' duck! i't was safe ter walk da streets then know what I mean?

Some real "Cockney's

Chas And Dave
Danny Dyer
Dick Van Dyke
Jamie Oliver
Frank Butcher
Len Goodman
The geezer from "Oceans Eleven"
Alf Garnett
The Artful Dodger

*** Please note sadly non of them no longer live in London ***

Well Lawd above! best get on wiv tonights review then from lor' luv a duck! top bloke Woody, you're a diamond my son, know what I mean? . , innit.

Percy Milem "Call On Me" Gold Wax Records UK release on Stateside Records (later re-issued on UK Kent Records)

An old school R'n'B cut from 1966 on the Goldwax Record label from Memphis,Tennessee comes this hi-energy Mod dancer that has a very distinctive Atlantic feel to it, just check out this verse.

"If you need me in the midnight hour" sounds familiar hey?

So not much guessing to where this songs inspiration comes from! but leaving that apart "Call On Me" is a classic 60's dancer with a heavy and well played dose of brass and a sassy saxophone solo all aided and abbetted by a strong backing drum beat that just thumps time throughout the track and although not the most polished of voices but Percy Milem with his somewhat raw and harsh vocal that still just seems to hit the spot, a gritty strutter and very much a Woody record.

Hi Russ,

Well thats our reputation in the BIG CITY done for then!!  I guess down here they might still think that us Northerners have whippets, flat caps, mufflers  and still bathe in tin baths in front of the fire...actually something me and Woody partake of on a regular basis him bein from Donny and all!!

You must have been up all night again...don't know how you do it but we really look forward to your postings.  This is truly a great offering from the genius that is the Sheffield branch of CCS and sure to make people laugh out loud....whilst also appreciating your reviewing skills. After all its the music wot counts at CCS and you get it spot on.

Look forward to the next instalments...1 week to go so bring it on!

Ok sa 'eear we nip on wi' t' fust o' Frankie "M" Christmas selections.

Horace Williams & Choker Campbell and his Magic City Orchestra  "I'm Going Christmas Shopping " Magic City Records"

Well what a fantastic change from "Skiing In The Snow" as a festive play, and i have to confess i forgot all about this happy Christmas ditty, from the lndependent local Detroit label Magic City Records and featuring Choker Campbell doing the orchestration on the track (even though at that time he was contracted to the Motown Record Corporation and was resident band leader there so to be credited on the disc implies that Berry Gordy was somehow aware of the deal between Campbell and Magic City)

Thankfully the song isn't as sugary sweet as the title might suggest with a cheery vocal by Horace Williams a large helping of sleigh bells and a girl only backing that is subtle and pretty reserved with some great musical work by Choker Campbell and his orchestra and possibly the even same musicians that were at Motown and were part of his big band with a host of trumpets and a steady but strong beat you have very much the classic Christmas soul dancer, a nice seasonal play that is just that little bit different and at only 2:14 seconds long even if you can give Scrooge a run for his money it short enough not to get you shouting BAH HUMBUG!

Sadly this record won't be played on Saturday, just quality Northern Soul, Motown and R'n'B

Just waking up from the big night out this weekend...Hole in the Wall club is a fantastic little club and our host Glen and fellow guest DJ Alan Handscome made us feel very welcome. Havent had such a good dance in ages...dance floor was busy all night and Woody turned on the charm in his usual style!  Played two brilliant sets and tested out some of his new acquisitions to a fantastically receptive audience.  This is of course just the humble opinion of Mr. Woods travelling companion, PA and number one fan! (But I think true nontheless!!)

Its one of those places where people go to dance...and they were not disappointed all night.  All three DJs worked well together to keep everyone very happy.  Lots of good wishes given to us and comments on the music made the trip very worthwhile and we are looking forward to another visit just as soon as we can.manage.  So its down to business in Crumpsall just as soon as we get back...and a trip to see the Paul Smith exhibition at the design museum and Sugg's one man show tonight before we do.  Bit worried about the invite to Christmas lunch at Frankies though..28lbs of sprouts roasted in duck fat might be quite some ordeal!!

signing off down south

The author sits down to write tonights record review from the Frankie "M" collection

Well  "best gerr daahn ta business" as we say in Sheffield

Lee Rogers "You Won't Have To Wait Long Till Christmas" D-Town Records   [although Xmas is called Christmas all through the song]

A 1966 cut from the small independent D-Town Records From Detroit Michigan (The D in D-Town stands for Detroit)  and owned by Mike Hanks who seemed to be mentioned on the credits of all their single releases either as a writer or producer and often both but for what every reason the big success he craved just wasn't to be and although the label had some impressive act on their roster such as Ronnie Love, Dee Edwards, Jimmy "Soul" Clark and a host of other artist familiar to many soul fans the label only ran for three years 1963-1966 but in that time it did turn out some impressive tracks often very Motown inspired.

"You Won't Have To Wait Long Till Xmas" although Simple in it approach both musically and vocally and could have easily be recorded by say, Stevie Wonder of the Miracles and sounding Motownesque (is Motownesque even a real word?) in it's production yet the track does shout of pretty straight forward old school R'n'B (yet at the time this was of course the in vogue musical style) but this is a strutter that screams of attitude and demands that you don't just dance but commanding you to "strut your stuff" like a man or a woman on a mission of cool in fact this style of a no frills vocal and sparse backing seemed to stay with Lee Rogers on many of his other single releases (so much in fact that you can almost say to all of them "if you like one you'll like 'em all") pure Detroit that apart from the festive lyrics is an all year round play, and copies just don't seem to come on the market that often.

Sadly this record won't be played on Saturday, just quality Northern Soul, Motown and R'n'B

Well a massive hi team,

Saturdays getting nearer all the time and you know we're going to have a GREAT night, thanks to the GREAT work by the CCS team and the GREAT efforts of all the friends of CCS that have helped promote these events, you truly are  GREA people and with an impressive line-up of DJ's Crumpsall Labour Club is set to be one helluva night! (i've managed to get four greats in there Miss T)

Well as Frank, embrace his Northern roots and cycles up a cobbled hilly street to get a loaf of bread and half a stone of dripping to the sweet sound of a pit band here are some proud Yorkshire men to inspire many a Southerner.

Billy Casper (from Kes)

The entire cast of Last of The Summer Wine

Charlie Williams

Sean Bean "The King of Accents "goo on lad's doo it fa Wellington")

Geoffrey Boycott

Brian Glover

Freddie Truman "Ahl sithee"

3017668_8142476b17_s_zpsc7ab8606.jpg

Daniel Craig as a Yorkshire James Bond in the re-make of "T Spy Whoa Loved Uz"

"T' names Bond James Bond', eur theur deaf or wha? 'n ah dooant sup neya puffy bloody coctails, mek it eur jar o' bitta."

Well lets crack on with another of Frank's Christmas selections!

Syng Mcgowan "Dear Santa" Hope Records

On the very rare Hope Records from Baltimore Maryland that had a total output of just four releases and im guessing that they might have all been by Syng McGowan here are the three i know just for interest, "Dear Santa", "Just In The Nick Of Time" and "That's What i Want" perhaps someone can come up with the missing release.

Dear Santa is a light and very cheery Christmas cut that doesn't work that hard to be original on any count whatsoever (think "Here Comes Santa Claus") but the song is lifted by a Syng McGowan who has a very decent voice indeed with it's female backing that might just be a little bit too loud for some it never the less bounces along at a pleasant rate and has enough dance ability to just carry this over from a novelty play to a real dancer (even if that is just over the festive period) and i'm sticking my neck on the line with this statement but if your were to try and make a record to capture both the spirit and essence of a Northern soul record this might be the number one contender for that title.

Sadly this record won't be played on Saturday, just quality Northern Soul, Motown and R'n'B

Just sorted my records out for Saturday and looking forward to having a great night there, i'll be bringing the flyers with me Woody with all next years CCS events on them and if anything is to go by with this year the new venue will be every bit as good as the old one if not better and the might CCS go from strengh to strengh, with Woody and his Sergeant at arms Frankie "M" and the lovely Miss T things are looking great for 2014.

*** And the strange bloke from Sheffield in the wings ***

Well not too sure how many more post we can get on here before Saturday but if i can i will....take it away!

Stevie Wonder "Someday At Christmas" Tamla Records"

Don't be fooled by the church bell introduction this cut from 1967 has some pretty hard hitting lyrics (and recorded in the mist of the Vietnam War) and once the initial songs sugar coating is removed we're left with a poignant song with a very deep message and meaning to it, with a somewhat typical Stevie Wonder vocal (even though he was only 17 at the time when he recorded this) that is both clear and well suited to the song (and i believe this is by far the best version of the song to be recorded) helped along by The Funk Brothers, The Detroit Symphony Orchestra and a impressive choir that are very polished and really raises this song a great piece of Motown that is still fresh and with a message that is just as important today as it was in 1967, a classic Christmas tune that really make you count your blessings.

Sadly this record won't be played on Saturday, just quality Northern Soul, Motown and R'n'B

In the words of Frankie Valli "Oh What A Night",

And it certainly was, impressive numbers to say the weather was dreadful and a change of event venue at quite short notice that threw quite a lot of people but all that said nothing detracted from a wonderful night, great music a fantastic buffet (that seemed to cater for 5000) and of course to everyone who made it not just on this night but has supported CCS all through the year.

Professional Cockney Danny Dyer sings Frankie Valli

Lawd above! Oh, what a night, late December back in '63
What a very special time fer me
As I remember what a night!, innit.

Cor blimey! Oh what a night,
You know I didn't even know 'er name
But I was never gonna be da same
What a lady, what a night!,

sweet my son.

If you were to go to only one event a year this would have to be it, a top night all round and perhaps the most knowledgeable crowd ever to grace a soul night you people really know your music!

Well thanks for the comment you Woody, but it was a result i wasn't burnt at the stake with some of the stuff i write on here but many thanks to everyone who said they enjoyed reading the CCS page with it's humour, cartoons and even the odd record reviews enjoyable so once again i thank you.

So till we meet again wishing you all a,

Hello Russ and Frank and all who attended last nights Christmas Soul Party...

Woody was using the communal Miss T log in this morning....and this is now the real Miss T speaking to you from the centre of Manchester where we have been  all day today. We really enjoyed last night from the particularly impressive plays from all DJs to the support and friendliness of the staff at the Crumpsall venue. We are so lucky to have met and be supported by such dedicated soul fans who really appreciate the music some of whom have been there since day 1 February 2012 at the Black Lion.  Lots of lovely comments and support from you all really gave us a buzz and you have all spurred us on to continue with CCS despite the recent closure of our venue.  The new nights at The Old Nags Head look like being every bit as good, its a lovely intimate space with the option on two rooms for dancing so we might just see CCS go from strength to strength over the next few months as we see what the potential is and as we get to know our new hosts.  Thank you to you all...CCS crew and supporting cast, especially Sharon for her invaluable help (and Barbara for her really kind offer to roll up her sleeves and make butties!) we are always impressed by your willingness to support and humbled by the appreciation shown in the lovely messages and (particularly) the  cards received last night.

Me and Woody have spent the day dismantling gear (and celebrating a family birthday up the Beetham Tower!) and discussing the possibility of a few "special edition CCS"  nights at Crumpsall as the club was impressed with the event and the fantastic crowd of supporters.  So watch this space as these ideas take shape!

Hope you enjoy the CD and have a lovely Christmas and a peaceful New Year...we will see some of you perhaps at the Greatstone Hotel on New Years Eve but if not all the best for 2014.

Lots of love Miss T  CCS  xx

PS... Thank you Russ for making it across the Pennines

It was lovely to see you and Marguerite and we are really pleased to have a photo of you in your rightful place alongside all the DJs from last night.  Great spot from you thank you. So glad you could make it...we really do know what an effort it was as we do the trip all the time!  Really pleased with the fliers and our new sign and look forward to seeing you again as soon as we can.

For now, take it easy and have a lovely time over Christmas and New Year

Much Love Miss T ( and Woody of course!)

I knew it would be a fantasic night Dave, I just wish I could have been there to offer my support, maybe next year at the new venue. Things are looking bright for the future, I've seen the work that you and Sue put in behind the scenes, so you certainly deserve all the plaudits.

Have a stonking christmas and a soulful new year my dear friends.

Oh, and by the way, don't forget to save me a CD (pretty please) :).

Chris.
