This event is now over. Look up now to read the latest reviews of this soul event

Really looking forward to visiting Rushden again and looking at the names I will be working alongside it's going to be a fab night.

2014 is the year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the start of Northern Soul all dayers in the Winter Gardens where Mary Chapman built on existing local events in Grimsby and around Lincolnshire. She put together a team of DJ's who all pulled together and this was the lead up to the start of the Pier Allniters in 1975. More of this story later!

Do any of the D,j's have Gladys Knight's" Baby Baby dont waste my time" would appreciate a spin on the night, also old standards like Thelma Lindsey's "Prepared to love you" and Velvet Satins "Nothing compares to you" or Roy Hamilton "She make me wanna dance" cant wait for a few steps out on the floor in the new year !!!!!

Yes Len...Can't wait for this now all that festive fun is over! According to my kids Wii Fit thingy just now I'm "apparently" 6lb heavier than last time they got me on it  , so once I've done my best to open the night in the big room with some choice early-doors danceable soul, I'll hopefully be working up a sweat in both rooms for the rest of the night if my legs will let me....so apologies now if I don't really speak to anyone. :D

Looking forward to seeing everyone and enjoying all the DJ's spots + great to see Chris Dalton back in Northants!

Arrrgggh the joy and pain of two rooms again!!...There is actually a "sweet spot" near the bar which is about 6ft square and where you can clearly hear what's being played in both rooms at the same time, just by turning ya head slightly left to right. Only problem (and it's a good problem) is it's usually packed with people trying to buy a drink or buy a record, or both!

Bring it on soul brothers and sisters. Happy New Year!

Hi there. If you're there early on I'm pretty sure I've got the Gladys Knight LP that track is from. Love it! I'd better check with the boss though...Jem - are we allowed to sneak an early 80's dancer in the main room?! :shhh::wink:

Think I have Velvet Satins too...I can't dance to it mind...too fast for me :D

Hi Chris. Happy New Year. Would love to hear more of the story on here, as I know there's bits and pieces on the web, in books and on CD comp sleeve notes etc, but nothing like hearing the odd anecdote or insight from you, or others who were lucky enough to have gone to those events back then. Me and Len far too young unfortunately....or fortunately...depending on how you look at life! :D

Cheers, Steve.

Great to have this night to look forward to for kick-starting this year after all the food, drink and TV this last fortnight. :)

For anyone interested, this Tuesday night I'll be doing my best to "fly the flag" for Northants / Soul in the Bowl on Banbury Internet Radio....I think 7.30/8 until 10.30. Not too much pressure being their first guest of the year :elvis: , so go easy on me if you do go on the chat room thing on BIR website. :D

http://banburyinternetradio.com/

Will be picking out records from this last couple of years, what I can recall of some "Den" type tunes, some "Main Room" dancers (including some I'm told were tried and tested Cleethorpes winners in the mid 70's...thanks Jem  !) and a few things in between.

Cheers, Steve

A true Cleethorpes sound, standing on the seafront and listening to the sound of the vibrations coming all the way along the weeden decking of the pier from the dancefloor of the nighter, unique, definately. It willbe good to hear some sounds from the moment in time that was the start of the cleethorpes years. At that time is by far my favourite as was Samanthas over Wigan, personal opinion, some great stuff coming from the mecca intermixed with the classics and the new big northern sounds of the time.Look forward to hearing some memory evoking sounds in theroom 1 as well as a  what is hitting the turntabloes in the Den,Heard its much darker now in the said Den but thats fine because when your pupils get bigger your eyes adapt quickly to the dark so mo problem there thanks to human physiology anyway its the ears that matter and no amount of darkness can shutn out the sound of a top choon.Roll on Saturday,There may not be a winter garden or a pier to walk back and forth from like in the Cleethopes day in Northants but theres a Den and a big room to divide your nights attentions between and you dont have to walk along what at this time of the year would and could be a very cold seafront. No doubting the quality of the djs or the music that will be played in each room  thats for sure.First soul event of the New Year for me ,my feet are already tapping.

They say you can come across some strange sights at sea, well one morning coming out of the pier nighter there was a strange sight indeed, someones car had bee driven ont during low tide and was now half under water, wouldnt have liked it to have been mine, heard the culprits came from Manchester,no slur on your good name of course mr back street blue, good fellow as you are on this site .Some even stranger things were seen and done back then many, inded nearly all not for public consumption.Strangely or maybe not so strange the record that always puts me in mingd of Cleethorpes when I hear it is The O Jays ,I Love Music, closely folloewed by So Is The Sun,that used to get the decking thumping all the way to shore thats for sure!.As the Yum Yums would say,Saturday night "Its gonna be a big thing", at the Bowl.Bring it on!.

Some of the best times ever from back then that I had was with Rug ,Wilky,Gavin and co ,all dayers at Wilkys mums house after nighters etc in Wilkys bed room with a choice of what choons to put on between Wilky and Rugs boxes?everyone on the same level having a really good laugh about things,Rug,bless him along with Wilky and Gav,had the best most funny zany senses of humour I have ever known,I was very sad after having been away from the scene for many years on return to find out him and Gav had passed on r.i.p bless the pair of them.Hope they keep a guest pass for me to that exclosive soul club up the top of the stairs. As you say Rug would have loved the bowl, sadly last time I saw him was after being off the scene some time over Wellingborough saw him running a record stall with Karen ,we had a good laugh and long verbal about things,Well roll on Saturday.

Right, back to the drawing board :D....It's funny, I thought I'd dig a bit deeper this time, so went back to my shelves, and I've virtually come up with an oldies spot. Interestingly though, some that would have been main room plays 10 years ago, are actually more fitting of 'The Den' nowadays.

Looks like the Bowl has become another great"Landmark venue",in the long, lomg, history of rare soul in this country and rightly so.I although living in Peterborough now and have been for some years am Northants born and bred in that sleepy little peaceful hamlet of Corby, where those who cant cope with the pace of life in Switzerland come to retire .Glen bellamy ,legend dj,psychologists say women are better at multi tasking, but even they wouldnt be able to perform the task of simultaneous attention and listeneing to the choons in both rooms at the same time, even with the "sweet spot",mentioned earlier, some hard decisions  to make for folk folk tomorrow night,at various stages through the night, room 1 or room 2?I am going for a bit of both meself.Someone was saying to me "Phook, look at all the comments about this event even before the after event comments go in",my answer is that shows what the quality is,has been and is expected to be.Well only another night to go till I come out of the restraints and head to Rushden."Michael  Palin" Kimbo and Lisa know who you are,you better be there tomorrow as Rug s Classic "The Lean Back",is coming out on release soon!

Late seventies

Late seventies in the hey days of the "Lean back",along with one of "Rugs",favourites called "The march of the lonesome rudder, solo performance",will explain all tomorrow.Mark will remember the brilliantly choreographed by Himself"Rug", formation march in single file to the Northpark from Marks flat before a st Ives allnighterEveryone was walking lean back style with Rug leading, hands behind his back holding his thumb in the other hand fingers out to resemble a rudder,he would move it from right to left depending what way the file needed to turn, just like an indicator.Following on behind Rug was myself,Mark, the two Dan brothers from Northampton,Pete Bradbury and Lenny jones from Corby following on at the back,Lenny had to shout out choo, choo everytime we made a turn or crossed a road.We travelled a good half mile or more from Marks flat staying in formation all the way , it was middle of summer early evening, loads of people about turning round looking at us slack jawed as we passed, even had a couple of cars stop to let us cross.Dont know where Wilky had got to that evening but we met up with him later .Having a grumpy depressive comedown after a nighter was impossible with folk like Rug,Wilky etc around, you would be laughing to much at the stunts and banter all based around ovo of course.Be good to say hello to fellow leanbacker tomorrow night, sadly not all that many left, however the founder wont be forgotten as he still lives on in memories of those who knew him.Like you say Kimbo mate,it wouldnt be an olympic torch it would be Rugs solatio with the elastic band holdning the toe and soul together as the iconic symbol,he even gave it a name and would do the ventriloquists bit with it having conversations,I reckon it was called "Thladmeed",pronounced how it looks,in fact I am fairly sure of this,it is after all not one of those names you forget ,is it,Phook it Rug Bowers legend, and as some stated a dj before his time. Those were the times when you came to realise how right it was to be part of "The wrong crowd",part of the "Midnight Brew ",that was a bubbling.Hot summers but hey what the phook, they was the summers of the "Cool off".

…..and that is what ‘The Den’ is all about - each event being different from the last because the D.J’s are free to play exactly what they choose to. We do try to have a bit of ‘light and shade’ with ref music styles, which keeps it all interesting.

Thats one dedicated record collector Kimbo, every spare penny on records and some more putting yourself in the red besides, never mind the sxpense of resouling your leather shoes when an elestic bamd would do,yet he had the knoack of always looking smart, jacket and tie etc, bloody hell look at the sort of record you could have got for a fiver back then that the shoe repair would cost.

Thanks to all those that supported ‘The Den’ last night, and for understanding what we are doing in there - I ain’t worked that out myself yet! :D Also thanks to the D.J’s - Stevie P, Phil Atley, Brian Goucher, and ‘Mick ‘n’ Mo’ for sticking with playing the tunes they believe in, this takes some doing - that pressure to ‘fill the floor from the off’ is always there for a D.J.

The main room looked cracking, and it was great to see Dave Vanner going down so well in there

As always, we welcome any feedback - Apologies that the heating was on full in ‘The Den’ - that will be sorted.

A couple of people said it was too dark in there! let me know if it is a problem, and we’ll adjust (slightly!) My reasoning is - You enter ‘The Den’ to listen, not to see, that’s when the socialising starts - then you miss the night!

A pleasantly surprisingly high turnout so soon after Christmas

See ya next time,

All the best,

Len

P.s - When I said to a couple of people that I wasn’t gonna go last night, I was being ironic! (Someone said they had heard this) ‘Len’ not attending ‘The Den’, may give out the wrong signals  he he (My fault!)

Soon as he saw me he said bloody hell Kimbo I've had one hell of a turn out! Also saw a bloke at the bar late on in the nite Barry who I worked with in the 80'S "bloody hell Barry fancy seeing you. Didn't know you were into Soul music" he replied "i'm not I feccin hate it, Im here to lock up" ha ha it was that sort of nite.Great to See Manus and Phil. Manus and Mark talking all things leanback.Lots of remembering,j the guy we called catweasle. The chap at Trentham niter who asked what time Archie Bell and the Dells were on !!!!was he disappointed depending on who he wanted to see Ha ha Great to see everybody and just have a local nite to enjoy people and music wise. Well I got out my restraints to get there last night, still on the loose now and I have told the nurses I am not going back in them again, phook lots of faces there last night some I have not seen for a very long time,Mark Kerr great lad ,still got yer chesire cat grin, laughing about it on the way home about how the key to brillos bedsit used to be booting the door in,so self,Wilky,Rug,Mr Kerr could shelter from inclement weather that would occur on the streets of Kettering, leanback rule ya bas as they would say inthat sleepy little hamlet in the shire where the steelworks once stood.Brilliant seeing you Tezza, sure want to hit Burnley soon,That sweet spot was great for a good verbal ,only down point one of the sonderkommando behind the bar told me off for leaning against the ropes, last time someone said that was when in a boxing ring!Congrats Len that place was filled with people last night, including the firm of Kimbo,Mark and Luton Paul.Paul headspin at 64,hows that you young uns!My mate Phil says he had a good night oat the bowl,he was suprised to see so many people, mind you that not suprising there was more folk there than there was at most all nighters weve been to lately and I am talking about numberss present about one in the morning before the great tidal drift begins and thoughts of bed and cocoa fill the heads of some and others think oh two more hours then we can go to our hotel for a nice sleep. So once again nice one Len you have to be doing something right to draw such a crowd and keep them there till the lights all go on.Liked hearing Glen Bellemy second set and caught a chunk of Phils personal stamp!Had a few damces earlier on ,donmt feel right at a soul do without a sweat soaked shirt enough heat around as I was "slipping around ",on the floor. You know what it is really refreshing to go somewhere where the bloody"Ghost",isnt in attendence, hes everywhere (well nearly)everywhere else, bit like "Kilroy was here".Like Kimbo says great to see everybody ,even though I am no longer a local shire lad but still have a place in me ticker,on a local soul night,to enjoy people and music.Wont miss the next one, once more great to have a chat with Tez and Mark, well as they say "lean on m..... sorry Leanback on me !".Kimbo everyone will of course know what we are talkiing about.Nice one Len.

Not a bad start to the year that! Great to see so many people up for a good night so soon after the Pembo bash and Christmas etc.

Really enjoyed playing a few dozen early doors as the big room steadily filled up....thanks again for entrusting me with that opening spot as it is an important one and some nice comments from people cheers. Great to have a chat with Chris Dalton and get an insight into what Cleethorpes events were like, then fair play to see him dancing a bit in the Den later in the night and staying right till the end.

Managed to spend almost as much time dancing as it took to help set both rooms up, which is always good "pay-back" for what is a long but brilliant day.

Loved the new dancing corner in the Den and prefer darkness, although appreciate others wanna see who's in the room! Everything I heard in there and back in main room just brilliant to my ears and feet. My two girls asked me to help them build a "den" in the house today....it wasn't as good!!

All the best and roll on the next one in April.

Steve

Great to see ya Manus

Is that the one I picked up off the A45 on the way home? - Terry is a clumsy one, always dropping C.D's out of his car window

Its all been said but I'll put my two peneth in, standing in a line waiting for permission to buy a drink is f******* stupid,at times the line was reaching the doors, I'll blame Mr Scotney its the sort of thing you encounter in banks:) Needs changing, gave up twice trying to buy a beer.

Spent most of my time in the Den, musically it was a supreme night and it was so good to hear Mick & Mo get the response from those present, we know how good they are and its great to have them as part of the Den's line up,both Stevie P and Lenny as usual doing what they do to great response,Phil always brings something fresh to the decks and has impeccable taste, for my own part I stuck in the main to album tracks and judging by the response it worked, in any event you wont hear 90% of what was played in the Den anywhere else and that tells you how unique the Den is and how damned lucky we are to have the Den in 2014,it also says a great deal about you folks that want to be in there, thankyou, see you at the next one.

I must have got lucky then cos had no trouble getting a drink. I even left the dancefloor at the start of a tune that didn't grab me, got some drinks and was back near the dance floor before it had finished. Even my brother said it was better and he'd still be going on about it now if it wern't.   :wicked:

Another cracking night at the Bowl. :)

Cheers Mick for playing my request of 'Milton & Winston'.   Great to hear Patty Stokes' as well, one of my all time favs.

Sublime soul in the den all night.   Every dj adding something a bit different.   I also enjoyed your spot early on in the main room Steve, before we headed into the den for the rest of the evening.

You asked for feedback Len, heres mine for what its worth;  - keep the den as dark as possible, also the volume was a bit low early on, although was turned up later on I noticed.      Apart from that no complaints, just praise for a great event.

Great stuff - This is why we try to persuade everyone to pop into 'The Den' (even for a short while), it's nice to hear different tunes from time to time.....In saying this, they are playing all sorts of fantastic tunes in The Main Room anyway, and I feel I miss out......Still, we have Ez's 60th Birthday Bash on Friday March 14th to look forward to, where we are all in the main room - I'll try and 'splice' a couple of 'Den' tunes in (as Ez always spend time in 'The Den')

I recon this night will be fantastic, all welcome - and it's FREE!

***Note Ez's Birthday is a Friday***

See ya then.

Len

All the best,

Len
