The best place to stay is The Ibis at Wellingborough - 01933 228333. It is next to The Priory Pub where we all meet up at 1.32pm for some lunch, some sounds, and a chat. When you come to the bar ask for the ‘Len’s Den’ party — We have our own room :D

Failing that, try the Travel Lodge on the A45 Eastbound, Rushden, Northamptonshire NN10 9AP - 0871 984 6115 Or Sally’s Canberra Guest House at Wellingborough - 01933 276905

It’s with much regret and sadness, we have to report that April’s Soul in the Bowl, will be the final one. A lot of people that know us will have an incling as to why this is happening. We would just add that, behind the scenes we have done our utmost to prevent this situation, but in the end to no avail. We expect to have to deal with the usual Northern Soul politics, that’s the promoter’s lot! And have always tried to do so with good spirit and humour. However the ‘below the belt stuff’ has become too much folks!

We can only say, we really did try and do it the way we thought it should be! i.e.: ‘It was never about us’ it was about, the music! The vibe! The venue! And all were welcome, from Rare Soul aficionado’s to ‘Oldies ‘fans. We wanted it to be, your Venue, your Night! Unfortunately others were determined it should be about them. Well it is now Guys; you want it that bad you got it!

We would just like to thank the many hundreds of you that came and put ‘Soul’ in the Bowl over the last 3 years. We finish on a high with up to 300 attending each of the last 3 events, so that’s something we can all be proud of. We have had some really special Nights. So come on! Let’s show them how to do it one last time ‘Show your Northern Soul come to the Bowl’ on the 12th

They took are name, they took our idea; they took our venue, they even took our kit! But they ain’t taken our Soul yet.

All the best and thank you

Team S.I.T.B. (Jem, Len, Steve. S and the Girls)

The new 'promoters' will soon realise what is needed to keep the momentum going that we have established at this venue. Enjoy the work guys - Fill ya boots :)

We simply can’t have a situation where two Soul events are running from the same venue - The reason we only did 3 per year was to keep it special.

I just wanna say thanks to those who have supported ‘Soul in the Bowl’, and of course those who have been so supportive of ‘Len’s Den’ - We had fun

See you all on April 12th.

All the best,

Len

Really sad it has come to this guys and as your "roadie" and local punter it is so disheartening to end something that was so special. The formula was spot on, the music "sublime", the atmosphere great!

Politics should be left out of our beloved scene and i really do understand how you guys must be feeling. All that effort etc etc

Well you should all stand proud as it was one of the local areas most popular and special events.

I will always remember fondly "Lens Den" for once a room locally that totally catered for my taste!

Aw well Len i better get my sat nav out as i'm sure there will be plenty of events to sample that caters for our respective tastes.

Come on folks support Jem, Len Steve and the ladies for one last defiant foray at Soul In the Bowl (THE ORIGINAL)

All the best

Gutted :-(

What you guys had was one brilliant formula in one brilliant location - where will the travelling masses from Shropshire go now?!

One thing's for sure, if you're not behind it, then the vibe won't be the same so we won't be making the effort to come down and stay over for the weekend.  I'm all for trying different venues with different promoters but when will people get that politics and soul just don't mix - so as they say on Dragons Den (or should that be Len's?!) .... I'm out!

It should be about the music and having fun with some likeminded folk - treading on toes (apart from the dancefloor) is NOT the way forward.

Here's hoping that you don't give up on what you've got and find another venue (and name!) again soon.

Good luck - see you on the 12th :-)

I can't remember who said to me last year or so, in relation to the great nights we've all had at Soul in the Bowl (and elsewhere) this last few years....."It's about making the most of what we have at any given time really". Spot on.

I think we've all done that and I certainly intend to enjoy the last night as much as possible. Might even leave my car on the drive for this one!

Was about to post up original artwork from "The Dirty Dozen" film but then realised there's actually 13 different DJ's on! I'm quite superstitious, but I know this has nothing to do with the news that this is to be the last night.....at least at this venue and in this format.

1st April tomorrow by the way. Roll on the 12th (oh and the 11th....for anyone else who'll be warming up at Soul Essence on the Friday!)

Cheers, Steve.

Troop;

Although this is a sad moment its one that doesnt surprise me, 'Lens Den' was a very special place for those of you who frequented the hallowed room then can I suggest you get up to the Red Bar in Wakefield which has been running for a number of years now, its free in and musically its stands alone, probably the finest soul nite in the country. For those of you who went for the Northern room, please check out the nights Karl & Marco put on in and around Kettering, the alniter this past Saturday was amazing. Kev Such puts on a cracking night too in Corby and a short hop over to the Caliente in Peterborough is another superb night. So its not all doom and gloom, just have to replace the Bowl with something else, good diverse nights are out there just gotta go looking.

Anyway enjoy this last night.

Politics doesnt actually rear its ugly head it just sneaks its green eyed monster of a gaze round the corner or through a crack in the door, envies, gets enraged and mumbles getting even louder as time goes on its gonna be mine ,I want that whats theyve got going in there, what can I do to make it all mine .Thats the strength of it Len and the others who have built it up to be the place it is and will be for one more time!

Foo kem lads same venue name it may be  as those who seek to coatail in on others efforts and hard work to make something special seek to hijack reputation, punters that something special etc, will no doubt find out, two vinyl discs, same name on the label of both, but a bootleg copy aint hard to spot, granted ,some might go for the copy but most would prefer the original.

Have a really good one Len,will be there  with the usual suspects,Kimbo told me a bit of what was going on !will be a cracking good last night .Hopefully the periscopes may be seen to rise for the occasion above the waves,as you said it wouldnt be what it is if they werent there.Manus.

Hi Manus (and all)

I just popped this up on Face Book...."I was just at a venue I used to run called 'SILKS' - Basically a big 'Len's Den', I ended up giving it to Cliff Steel to run, but he hasn't done anything with the venue for a while.....So, after some thought, I may have a word with Cliff Steele to make sure he's ok with it, and if so, I may have another venture there (Have him D.Jing if he wants to of course)........But can I really be bothered? ......"

Let me know your thoughts guys, I think musically we could quite easily mix Main Room sounds with 'The Den' sounds, if done with a bit of thought. This venue is ideal for that.......'never say never'

All the best,

Len

Here's one for you, might give everyone an idea of some of the stuff that's going on. My 'other job' is providing general dj and disco services.Called into a local pub today were I am contracted to provide myself as a dj for a number of nights this year. This was booked through my agent I am not promoting the night, my only involvement is to dj when required. The landlady informed me today, that she was visited by one of the characters behind the Soul in the Bowl shenanigans recently and they practically begged her to let them do the night saying they would do it for free, backfired because luckily she is a professional business person and realizes the contract cuts both ways.Whatever next? The poor Women was most confused and it probably wont do me any favours for future bookings

Last soul in the bowl!!GUTTED. speaking as a long time punter I can only post what I think.

A member of my family was in a hospice with terminal cancer and as time passed by small silly things in life became massive and took all their thoughts and time and rage..... to me this is the same mindset of whoever is spending so much of their life spreading the poison spoiling things for a lot of people not just the promotors. People also coming into the area staying in hotels to attend the soul night I thought cash coming into the county was good?

. Let it end now you aint got cancer so live and let live for gods sake, we are all grown up now. If you really have that much of a chip on your shoulder  about Jem and Len or whoever then man up and say so but end it. By doing all this it is making people choose sides and what events to attend, when really me personally like to spread myself about hear good music and see like minded people having a good time.

On a positive Soul bowl team thanks for a top nite and hope the phoenix rises from the flames

Think about it atb Kimbo n Lisa.

This is terrible news - The "ORIGINAL versus OFFICIAL" Battle Of The Bowl has been a short but highly amusing comedy on a par with Fawlty Towers.
Never mind The One Show, the BBC should commission this little Soap Opera, families and friends fall out, fight, reconcile, fall out again.

The lot of you are doing Northamptonshire proud!

FFS stop whining and grow a pair, it's just a LOCAL venue. In Milan and throughout Italy, big football clubs with huge followings share stadiums successfully.

Ps - What is LIFELINE LIAISON?

Hiya John,

Glad you're being entertained mate - There is an amusing side to all this of course.....I never liked Faulty Towers (Didn't like The Parrot sketch on Monty Python either btw)

Take it from me John - You can't run two soul events from the same venue, it waters the whole thing down. 3 events per year = 300 people attending, as soon as you start to put more on, then it's simple maths - you cut the customer base in half. People start to think,....."I won't go to this one, I'll go to the next one"

I have learnt a bit about what I am talking about over the years - To get these sort of numbers nowadays is unusual, and it's down to loads of background work, and putting only about 3 on per year.

Ref Italian Football Teams sharing the same stadium - Different Teams, different coloured shirts = A completely different set of people.....Soul fans = The same set of people.

As Kimbo pointed out, there are more important things in life, and believe me - I ain't that bothered (There are other places to go)

Oh - 'Lifeline Liason' means - Chalky is D.Jing in 'The Den' (It's called promoting John)

All the best,

Len

Len  90% of your customers are there for a knees up regardless of who's running it,the truth wether we like it or not. Most are not there for the music, don,t mean that in a harsh way just observation mate.

If you guys are having problems with some twat/twats......then speak up/out....say who you mean,if they,ve done the stuff you say they,ve done...they,ll have no gripes

Hi Terry,

That's a fair comment mate, especially the bit where you say 'regardless of who's running it'......We recognise this, and is why we think that more events here, either run by us, or anyone else, will be seen by most as the same event (especially when they use the terms 'Soul in the Bowl, and 'The Den' in their advertising)

No doubt they will continue to get a fair few through the door because of most not caring who runs it (fair enough) But we did try and accommodate the other promoters new venture - in fact when he started nights just round the corner at The Higham Working Men's Club, him and Jem had a meeting to make sure their dates were staggered, and that is the point we went down from running 4 or 5 events per year at The Bowls Club to 3 (for this reason)

John is right in pointing out that it all looks a bit silly (from an outsiders point of view) I except that.....It's not like we're arguing over it as if a business - profit doesn't come into it. Jem get's a fair sum of money for his general disco's - he just gets hired, and has to do no promoting at all.

All the best,

Len

Yes mate - The All-dayer they have planned was the final straw, especially after all the promotion we put into doing one last year, only to have to cancel it - Now 'miraculously' they have the go ahead. We tried our best to make Soul in the Bowl as unique as we could, but their line up is the same as all the other events up and down the country (It ain't that simple to make an event a success)

Although our original idea was to play it down as much as we could for the fear of making us all look stupid, I'm sure Jem will add a few more facts to put everyone in the picture.

All the best,

Len

Absolutely, and to be fair to The Bowls Club, Derek the Manager has been 'straight down the line' with us all the way. He tried his best with ref our All-dayer, and was quite upset about the whole thing.

Again, Jem knows more of the details, but Derek seems to have his hands tied. He knows by the till receipts alone that this is very bad business - for example most people stay until the very end (spending money behind the bar) at our events.

All the best,

Len

There are two sides to every argument of course, and as far as I'm concerned none of this is personal (I'm just sticking up for what I think is right)

Steve Brown is welcome to come on this thread and go 'toe to toe' with Jem so he can put his side forward explaining why, after his meeting with Jem about him running seperate events at The Higham Working Mens Club, he feels the need to run further events at The Bowls Club, and (it seems) The Nags Head (in addition to all these, he is also doing a Bletsoe Reunion)

It's a free country, and anyone can put as many events on as they like, but I (we) don't think there is any room to have those additional events at The Bowls Club.

One thing Steve says, is that he felt pushed out by me, Steve (Scotney), and Jem, and I have 'e' mailed him reassuring him that this could not be further from the truth. This was when he was very much part of 'The Team', I have also done the same since (To no response)

I did this because I am well aware that all this 'sillyness' can be damaging to either events.

All the best,

Len

I have to say that Soul in the Bowl as we have known it has thru promoters hard work and risk taking has built itself up to be rather special and im going to miss it big time. That small room offers the breaking of new/unknown songs and like many things in life some people are happy to sit back and watch things grow into a success and either destroy it or take it turn round and spit in the foundation that built it..There are a few promoters here in the uk that hold that mentality so much so they would be happy to take the scene to the grave with them as long as they have filled their bank accounts up along side their big egos.Since joining the soul scene in 1970 ive always been into the next record discovery, yes I still love what has been but look forward to what might be.Lens Den has been helping that cause for the what might be.The so called standard hand bag punters only know a handful of songs and that's all they want to know, they turn up at soul nights trying to live what they didn't do first time round(pretend soulies ) and or acting out whats been on telly  of recent Without that forward thinking I will have no part to play in this takeover .Gilly and Nicola

Firstly John aint whining, the announcement is purely for people who have enjoyed the Bowl as a mark of respect for them coming along to most of the nights, to them its more than a local venue, ask the people that make the trip regularly from Dorset, Shropshire etc.-you have only been once from memory. I have a big enough pair mate, quite happy to take anything or anyone on on face to face and have, my issue is with people the make a deal then go back on it. Glad you have found it amusing, perhaps you ought to pass that on to the hundreds of people that will be gutted Soul in the Bowl as it is, is finishing, very disingenuous to put this down as a soap opera, this aint the normal politics there is more behind it than that. Rightly I don't want to wash our dirty linen on here ....for anybody who really cares and wants to know the pm me and I will send you the facts. Lets not turn this thread into a he said she said thing eh

I just think there is probably another side to all this ???  I hope we will get to know what it is!

All that has been generated so far is a great deal of heat and no light!

For someone who feels that this forum is "not the place" for this discussion, a great deal of dirty and opaque washing and considerable pointless bile has been posted! Is anyone any the wiser? It would strike me that the complainants protesteth too much!

I thought that the original aim of Soul in the Bowl was to help raise funds for local charities anyway??? Anyone have any figures as to how much has been raised since it's inception?

As a previous poster has pointed out, the music wasn't that exciting at Sin in the Bin anyway! So does it really matter who promotes it in the future? Hopefully the new promoter can do something about the acoustics too?

Chinese Whispers mate, hence you saying......"I've just been told".....In fact I was quite 'taken a back' when at Life-line that being the first thing someone said to me (as if it was 'hot gossip') I'd actually forgotten all about that situation as it was so trivial (seriously) It was something of nothing from a simple 'heat of the moment' situation. Sadly, some people do love to gossip about such things, thus making them into a big deal - P.m Jem if you have any further questions, and he will be happy to let you know the facts (let's keep it off here)

The Bank Balance comment is so text book - It has nothing to do with money. If it did, do you think we would be walking away so easily? As I pointed out - For example, Jem gets enough money from being hired as a general D.J (an evenings work) If we were to divide the profit into the hours we spend on this project - we would be better off picking cabbages in Norfolk at the height of winter!

All the best,

Len

So another quality venue falls victim to the money grabbers within the scene,we have supported the bowl and the Den from day one, we feel very sad for Jem, Len and Steve. The effort they have put into this venue has been shown by the numbers through the door and travellers that attend. When the grabbers stopped your all dayer last year, you soldiered on putting on a free admission night for Traceys charity RP, which raised over £1300, something we will never forget. Always playing alternative music of high quality within the Den, which makes it worth the travelling.

Lets make the last one a night to remember, some unplayed tunes and some of those treasured tunes from the Den, not forgetting the main room too.

Thanks Len,Jem,Steve and the girls for all the great nights we have had.

Jem may have a few more words to say, but I've said all I need to now. What I have learnt over the years, is that there is always someone around wanting to knock down things they can't build themselves.

The people that went know what the 'Soul in the Bowl' was all about, and that's all that matters......

Right - Let's look forward to the event folks - I'll post a couple of sound clips up tomorrow to get us in the mood.........It's no big deal really, let's just enjoy ourselves on April 12th - ALL WELCOME!

Yesterday tea time I took my 5 year old Daughter along the River at The Embankment in Wellingborough to feed the Swans…….She ended up slinging in a ‘whole slice’ of bread in, and the Swans went mad! Well, trying to stay positive even though it's hard after all the time and effort everyone has put into building this night up over the last couple years....been an experience and a half getting on the bus with Len & Jem and many more of you, so thanks for the ride while it lasted at The Bowls, but I'm certainly not ready to get off at this stop.

Yes, yes, yes I've only been "on the scene" 5 minutes compared to you lot, so I might not have much of a voice on here with such matters that have been posted, but rest assured I have my opinions on it all that I'll keep to myself.

A very apt new record is about to land on my doormat that's featured elsewhere on SoulSource...

"Elbowed out - Things are changing" (yet another top Soul Junction release), so I'll be including this early doors in The Den alongside some special rare soul treats.

You may have only been on the scene "5 minutes" Steve, but you are in it for the right reasons. The same as Jem and Len and that's what is important.

The name "Soul in the Bowl" may go on, but the ethos behind it will not. It will become just another soul night. Nothing wrong with that, but Soul in the Bowl promised more and always delivered.

Will be there next Saturday and make the most of it :-)

Well put! I would just like to add:

I know it will be at the embarrassment of Steve (sorry mate)    and wouldn't have been mentioned unless this situation had arisen. That if it wasn't for him 'Soul in the Bowl might have been finished at the end of last year, after they took the kit and refused to return it, he stumped up over a £1000 of his own money to replace it, thankfully we have nearly paid him back. Plus along with myself he is there setting up both rooms for approx 3 hours on the afternoon and back down there for 7pm to do his early doors spot, also there till the very end packing the kit away.

Along with others involved it does demonstrate, the sacrifice, commitment and passion behind the scenes that people have put in. I can only say thanks to him and everyone else.Time served on the 'scene' is not necessarily a measure, attitude is. Whether I'm ever involved in putting on another Soul Nite or not again, these guys will always have my true respect, support and backing. keep on keeping on kats!  :hatsoff2:

Thankyou ktf Jem

Jem. Why let the truth get in the way of a good story?

I and most others are sick of this childish ranting.I thought this is supposed to be a thread to advertise your event.

I started Soul In The Bowl with you and the Swivel Club when they moved away from Higham to the Bowls Club. Geoff Goss (Swivel Club trustee) coined the name, not you or me. You fell out with them shortly after moving our events down to 'the Bowl' but I continued to to work with them raising money for their charity. So let's be clear that I have been involved in all Soul events down there from day one!

Despite my fall out with you last September, the result of your letter stating that you were doing it as a business and wanted all the money, I have never relinquished my half of the partnership. Why should I? I have been very happy running my night at Higham and helping to raise over £4000 for charity since going my own way. Perhaps you can show us how much you have raised for the Epilepsy Society, particularly the Wigan charity night at the Pemberton Centre. I am mystified as to why you have spat your dummy out and cancelled the October 'Bowl'.

As for the kit, it belonged to me and I have written evidence to prove it! I still allowed you to retain a good deal of it so that you could make your living doing Discos.I was good enough to let you batter the life out of it without charge so that you could make some money and this is what I get in return, charming.

To date I have held one event at the Bowls Club which was mainly a Mod night to help the lads from Hipcat Express get established. I am currently helping the Swivel Club by organising an 'All Dayer;' in July and have another Mod do in September. What is wrong with that? Did I trademark the name, yes. Why? Because you started putting a copyright symbol on your posters and flyers and telling everyone that you had registered the name so that only you could use it. I have given the trademark to the Bowls Club to protect anyone that uses the name including you. for future events. I certainly haven't tried to stop you from using it. To date you have threatened and intimidated DJ's who have dared to DJ for me. Clashed with my dates to try to disrupt my events. You have even given the staff at the Bowls Club a hard time. I have kept my council to date and refused to get drawn in to your petty politics but enough is enough. I suggest that you go back down the Bowls Club and ask Derek if you can have your event back. He let you the last time you did this so he may well again!

Finally to everyone on Soul Source, I understand there is a rumour circulating that I somehow managed to get last years 'All Dayer' cancelled. I have an e mail from the director of the club stating fully and clearly why it could not take place. It was absolutely nothing to do with me. For a copy of that e mail and clarification on any other matters arrising please e mail me at sbrownregal@btinternet.com . I have quite a lot of interesting documentation.

I will not be on here again so spin this all you like. I love the music but hate all the crap that goes with it!

Hi Steve,

I actually wrote you a very long P.M yesterday, but decided to delete it (I’ll try and remember some relevant points)

I thought it a good idea you ‘keeping your own council’ and not commenting on this thread so as not to give the situation more oxygen (Also preventing any Sharks from ‘making a meal of it’)

I enquired as to why you decided to ostracize yourself from ‘The Team’, when the only change was to put Jem officially in charge (1 chef in the kitchen an’ all that) Reason being, was that he does a lot of the work, but more so, his employment situation (That’s what friends do)….You still had your D.J spot secured (because of you and Jems history) so all you had to do was turn up and enjoy the night - A great result in my book, and let’s be honest, no change to you at all (except for you getting half the money)

Ref the kit, I have stated there are 2 sides to every story - What you did wrong, was to take it away giving the impression that you would return it as usual (knowing full well you were going to keep it)……You may have had your reasons, but that is not the correct way of doing things. This is between you and Jem, and should be discussed face to face until you both come to an agreement.

Ref Charity’s — Whether proceeds go to Charity, or to the promoter has no relevance. I don’t discuss such matters with Jem, I simply get the wages for my D.J’s in ‘The Den’ - I have no other interest in the money side of things (I find all that ugly)

When I heard you had copyrighted the name ‘Soul In The Bowl’, I laughed (a lot) How ‘Northern Soul’ is that?! :D (A point scoring exercise in my book)

You state…..”Why let the truth get in the way of a good story?”………then further on contradict this by stating…...”To date you have threatened and intimidated DJ's who have dared to DJ for me”….. Making such allegations is a serious matter - This of course refers to the ‘Karl Boddington incident’

Our intension is never to have any D.J's feel they are in a position (that wouldn't be fair on them) it isn’t their argument — This has always been the case.

-------------------------------------------------

To clear this rumour up

Jem told Karl he couldn't D.J at Ez's Birthday at The Bowls Club, because he was D.Jing at Steve Browns event there a week prior. He fully explained this was only because we wanted to try and keep each of the events separate, and having the same D.J's makes them look like the same event.

Karl would not see this point, so Jem said that The Bowls Club agreed - They did agree, but didn't actually say Karl couldn't D.J at Ez's Birthday (obviously) They agreed that the events should have their separate identities for them both to work there.....

……Karl then goes and rings them direct and asks if they said he couldn't D.J - Of course they didn't know what he was on about....So he then rings Jem, and they have a heated discussion - Jem trying desperately to get the point across, Karl saying over and over again....."Yeh, but you lied to me Jem"......and not hearing what Jem was saying at all.....Anyway, Jem snapped, and said....."If you keep on calling me a liar, I'll come over and rip ya f*ckin' head off - Listen to me Karl!".......etc........

As I said 'heat of the moment' - Does anyone honestly think anyone would threaten Karl?....I know Jem, he doesn't make threats - He just 'does'

Please, let’s not give this any more oxygen

***THIS IS WHAT I THINK, AND HAVE TRIED TO GIVE A NEUTRAL VIEW POINT***

PLEASE CAN WE NOW LOOK FORWARD TO ‘SOUL IN THE BOWL’ ON APRIL 12TH?!

All the best,

Len  (of ‘The Den’).........Gawd, I hope I haven’t just broken copyright laws……I best have a read up on all that

P.s - I'm looking forward to a rest......

Len , You need to get your facts correct before posting on here - you weren't there when i had that phone call with Jem ! You have only Jems side to that phone conversation - not mine

Firstly I spoke to Ez directly not the Bowls club and im not going to explain anymore

Enough's been said on this - put all this to bed and move on - i have :)

Hi Nige,

Yes I am in this instance, because I know Jem didn't mean it - Admittedly he could have been somewhat more polite, maybe choosing to say something like....."Shut up, and listen for a second Karl!".......instead, but he didn't - That's Jem, But he wouldn't dream of doing that to Karl (They go back years).....People often say things they don't mean in the heat of the moment.

It saddens me that something said during a heated discussion (that could be sorted privately between them if there was still an issue) has been blown out of all proportion.

People can read into it how they wish, I know how it was meant - Chr*st if I thought Jem would actually do that to someone just because they wouldn't listen to him over the phone I would distance myself from him sharpish!......I can't tell you the hours he harps on down the phone to me - I hardly listen to a word of it!

Feel free to P.M me (or ring) if you want to discuss it further mate (honestly, it's not as bad as it looks)

All the best,

Len

Thanks Mike appreciate what your suggesting, however as Mr. Brown has took such a lot of time and effort to give a lengthily reply then only fair people should have the chance to read it. For those that know the real story this will be of interest to them I am sure, its not a version of events that I and others recognize, people can make of that what they wish. Will not defend myself against all the allegations or statements made in his post, there is little or no truth in any of them and he has left out or failed to answer the more serious points he cant defend. People that really do know me know the truth.

Soul in the Bowl was never a charity event and was never done in conjunction with the Swivel Club and I not any one else coined the name, ref. the epilepsy charity. I constantly give and have given to this charity when I sate I will and randomly, as one of my Son's is a severe sufferer. So to drag that in is a cheap shot. In deed their charity collection boxes are still down at the Bowls Club, unless they went missing along with our posters etc.  Plus during my time as being invited to be a trustee of the Swivel Club I helped raised thousands with them and as stated in this thread, was proud to be involved in helping Dave and Tracey Bentley raise over £1000 for their charity last year. But its not a competition is it Steve? or is it?

Ref the kit why cant you tell people the truth Steve the majority of the kit was purchased through proceeds from early events we did so I am entitled to my share. If you have paperwork to state otherwise then i would question its validity and doesn't excuse you going back on your word of either of us having access to it when required, which you requested,

Clashing with disrupting your events, simply untrue,Mr. Brown has obviously forgot the 'clear the air' chat we had last year where I gave him all the dates for this year booked in advance including the two I gave up at the Bowls Club to accommodate what he wanted to do. Plus knowing these dates he decided to put his other night at the Working Men's a week before this Soul in the Bowl..

.All i will ask people to consider is this, our decision to stop doing Soul in the Bowl, only came about after many weeks deliberation and being on the receiving end of some seriously strong provocation and after attempts to remedy matters failed. not just me spitting my dummy out! Does anyone honestly think we would give up the thing we passionately believed in just like that. Fore the record the last time we tried to mediate with Steve Brown through a third party his reply back was  'tell them to go f**k themselves I am doing it to wind them up"

Ref. Karl as he has said. The only people that know what was said in that conversation was us, Len has done his best to explain the context of the conversation  and i appreciate that. In the end its a matter for myself and Karl. He has moved on so have I, so no more comments or people trying to make more out of it than that .Nidge and others if you have an opinion come and talk to me don't try and sensationalize it on here, Steve Brown has said he wont be coming back on this thread, so enough now, lets keep it positive and look forward to the last night at the Bowl. This time next week it will all be over folks.

As Mr.Brown has been so kind to copy write the Soul in the Bowl name for us all apparently, then the name will live on, just we wont be doing it I think its pretty safe to say. Might get a bit confusing though as including our January and April one this year and the five events Steve and his associates are doing or have done, all bearing in the title 'Soul in the Bowl' that's seven this year. Still as he has so generously all of a sudden given the Club the copy write. I am sure it will all be fine and Steve Brown can carry on the Soul in the Bowl events.

You wanted it you got it mate, including the kit i'm outta there after next Saturday. I think your ego got in the way of the facts and the music which created the crap !

As said will leave it at that, any more comments other than banter or information about our final Soul in the Bowl, then I will take up Mikes suggestion

All the best Jem

Evening all...

May I propose a little known charity that should benefit from this final Soul In The Bowl (the original)?

Mellytee Elderly Handbag  Fund........................on the 25th of April I shall reach my half century and am struggling with this number, I shall be bringing my handbag and request that you all stuff notes of £5, £10 and even £20 denominations into  said handbag

I will proceed to get blind drunk, dance like a madwoman (no change there then) and enjoy every moment; I will probably get alcohol poisoning which will negate any further 'celebration' of my filthy fifty.

Please come and join me and send the lads & ladies off in style.................................................... Mel XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Love , peace and soul

The main room always looks after itself but 'The Den' was shaping into a really credible alternative room in my opinion and right up my street.

Despite the statement (highlighted in red) I have received a letter from solicitors representing Mr. Brown today, warning me to stop using the name Soul in the Bowl, Mr. Brown's title for his Soul nights 'forthwith or risk facing court action which may result in a costly fine' a bit confusing as he said he had given it to the Bowls Club, however in the interest of not wanting to transgress any laws. We have renamed the event, also have been out and taken down flyers posters etc. Please could anyone (other than Mr. Brown) that has contributed or posted on this thread using the title 'The Final Soul in the Bowl' please amend/ edit their post to remove it. We apologize unreservedly to Mr. Brown and his representatives for this unintentional error. I have tried removing the offending  flyers from the gallery but cant seem to do it, so some advice on this would be welcome.

First and a bit of a flying visit last night to Len's Den as my fellow travellers had another commitment down the road in Rugby; nonetheless, really glad we were finally able to make it down to see Len in his natural (mid-tempo) habitat. Slightly disconcerting to be greeted by the lad sans tweed / in casual mode, dress-wise, upon our arrival and even more so to find him relaxed and surrounded by strategically poisitione candles..

Despite our best efforts to bring some tension into his life, which paled by comparison with those of the fabled Fortnum map reading society, it was great to see you loving it Len and the sounds being sucked-up by an appreciative and very decent crowd right from the off. I reckon you'd need to be pretty blinkered to have a grumble at things like the Festivals, Dells, Blanchard n Aaron, Dusty Wilson, True Image, Charisma Band etc etc. Ideally suited it seemed and only right that there are still 'outlets' for them and their ilk on the scene IMHO. (I didn't really venture beyond the bar and the loos  / into the main room and so can't and won't comment on it but suffice to say the gaff was already well populated when we arrived around 8pm and plenty busy enough when we left at about 10.30 to head up the M6 so I guess that too got the send-off it deserved).

So, in a nutshell, somewhat shorter but just as sweet as we'd hoped the visit might be; here's hoping you guys are able to move things forward in whatever way suits best. Twas great to see Mick n Mo, Chalky and Carl, as ever, and to meet the undoubtedly long suffering Mrs Len; good eggs the lot of you.

Arrrghhh my aching feet and knees! I'm getting old. 12 hours of soul at SE in Yarmouth on Friday then back for this amazing night for 6 more hours of unbelievable music. Not sure if it's possible to OD on soul but I think I've come close this weekend. Actually it's never enough is it.

Got to thank Len & Jem + everyone who made the effort to get there for such a top final night, not least my wing-man for the weekend (Andy Luck) for such great company and helping me to set up "The Den" (am I allowed to say that?)...a bit of a panic when we arrived at 6pm with Jem only to find three dozen Bowls members still sitting at tables in there all eatin' and chattin' away about their afternoon games. Still we managed to stay cool, work fast once they'd vacated and music going by 7.15 while Jem did likewise in the big room.

Really enjoyed playing a few different things in the first hour and soaking up as much as I could of what others played in both rooms through the night. Top spots by everyone and the cover-up that Carl played in The Den was as good as anything I heard at Yarmouth the night before. Couple of panic moments with the the sound monitor device in the main room but that can now be someone else's problem.

I can't believe how many great people I've met over this last 4-5 years, or how much unbelievable soul I've heard that I might not have otherwise have done. Tracy Bentley said to me last night that this event (and the Den in particular) has made such a positive difference to her life and I have to agree with her on that, despite all the recent ridiculous happenings around it.

Might post a few photos later for anyone interested, but over n out for now. Roast beef calling my name! Cheers. Steve

Thanks to everyone that came along to The Bowls Club last night, I even enjoyed the evening’s proceedings, dancing on numerous occasions (in an earnest fashion of course)…..Well if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em - Dancing does seem to be ‘in vogue’ at present

All ‘The Den’ D.J’s jelled nicely, playing some fantastic tunes whilst treading that fine line of keeping it interesting yet entertaining. It’s always nice to see D.J’s having a laugh together, and being genuinely interested in what each other is playing - thanks for your efforts lads, it’s very much appreciated!

Let’s now focus on the positives of this event - We had “Good Times”

…………‘Gone Fishing - Back in 2 years’…….Bye for now, and may your ‘Cod’ be with you :)

All the best,
