Right,
I am suitably rested from our weekend running soulfusion so thought I'd better put pen to paper and get some thankyou's out!

so after the Anas horribles of 2013 I was hoping and praying that we would start 2014 with a good turnout to not only make up for Novembers low attendance but also to relaunch soulfusion and get back the energy and vibrant atmosphere of the early days. for the first 4 years of soulfusion the attendance was in excess of 350 every time, but recently the attendance has steadily dwindled for various reasons, some I can attribute to me not being proactive with the promotion of soulfusion, I admit I had taken my eye off the ball probably down to me going through a divorce and all that comes with sorting it out!. But there are other factors to take into account, the recession for example has affected many events with smaller crowds noted all round the country. there are also more events to choose from nowadays, when I started soulfusion there were only a couple of events in the area, choice is good for the punter and I respect anybody who wants to have a go at promoting an event. As long as consideration is given to the already established events running. I have never ever intentionally clashed with an event and wouldn't want to as it causes bad feeling and is disrespectful and inconsiderate IMHO.

So anyway on we went with saturday 8th anniversary Bash!!
with COLIN CURTIS  & SOUL SAM headlining the event plus the soulfusion crew supporting
a TOP TOP lineup and quite rightly so as it was a celebration of the event
It was a bit of a gamble booking two of the most respected DJs on the soul scene, if we had a low attendance again it would have been hard financiially!
but i wanted it to be a top night and give the paying public great value for their £6

well the gamble certainly paid off with well over 300 paying soulies through the door. so here's the point when I can say a HUGE thankyou to everyone who turned out on Saturday night to support the DJs.

I know Colin is on facebook but Sam isn't but I would publically liked to say a sincere thankyou to the pair of them for taking the time to come to soulfusion and DJ for us. it is an honour to have you both at our club again. I have told them both individually how grateful I am but it needs saying in public too, they are both ambassadors for the soul scene and without doubt both pioneers in their own fields.

on to the resident DJs now!!
in the northern room
Dean Carr stood in for Jon Willis who was away on DJ duties elsewhere,
I hadn't heard Dean DJ before but I know he's been buying lots of good rareties so gave him the opportunity to spin a few. Dean you did a blinding spot and got the floor rocking nice and early in time for Martyn and Sue Taylor to treat us to an hour of Motown and Northern tunes from their collection, blinding stuff from the pair of them. On comes Jerry Hipkiss to keep the floor jumping for an hour!, lots of folks coming outside to cool off but soon heading back in to savour the classic northern being played by the genius that jerry is! Jerry then hands over to Soul Sam who is recovering from treatment for cancer! But there's no stopping the man! 71 years young and still seaking out elusive tracks to keep his set interesting and unique, OK not to everybodies taste but interlaced with some mega rare classics like Bobby Kline, Eula Cooper, Jimmy bo horn to name a few!! the floor was never empty and rammed for a good part of his set so good job done INHO!

I had the easy job of taking over for the last hour and playing a set of mainly classic 60s & 70s northern though I did kick off with a lesser know number by Black Satin & Fred Paris called "everybody stand and clap your hands for the entertainer" especially for Sam wich was well received.
so my third major thankyou goes to all the northern room DJs on the night, you all did us proud!!

on to the modern room now and a BIG thanyou to Will Ward and Graham Dowler for warming things up in there, good crowd in nice and early so folks were already having a boogie when Soul Sam took over and started off with some of his funky 70s sides which aren't really right for that room but being the pro that he is soon sussed out the crowd and switched to more modern choices and had the dancefloor back!. Paul Garland took over at 10. Paul kicked straight in with some up tempo tunes to die for!! and the place was alive and junpin! lots of modern royalty in the room and Colin Curtis's avid followers making the journey to soulfusion boosted the numbers!! Paul left a rammed dancefloor for Colin Curtis to take over and when he gets on the energy level seemed to go up. Colin delivered a superb set, I even managed to get on the floor myself and have dance with Gina Wellings which was nice! Colin has a weakth of experience most DJs can't get close to and it showed in his musical choices and the delivery was superb!! thanks Colin you are a legend!!
that left Steve Lloyd to send everybody home happy!!, I didn't hear steves set as i was DJing in the northern room but by all accounts he did a blinder, and he was still playing when I packed up at 1.15 so thats a good sign!!
so another massive thankyou to all the modern room DJs for doing your stuff and keeping the room mainly upfront which is our ethos for that room

on to the open decks room now and it is really down to the guys who turn up and want to spin a few tunes!! this time Paul O'brien, Marc Moyse, Mike Mazurek, Sid Pratt and Dean Carr sorted it out between them, hope you guys enjoyed playing a few tunes to an appreciateve crowd.

finally I would like to thank Paul Garland for you support both with the equipment for the modern room and your DJing skills, I aspire to be able to mix half as good as you mate! and the few folks who take flyers to other venues and spread the soulfusion gospel to anyone who will listen, Sara Baker, Stella Prince, Bev Short, Sue and martin, Steve Bennet, Belinda Manton, also want to thank Gina for your unrelenting support and encouragment and for sitting on the door all night! and anyone else who flies the soulfusion flag when they are out and about. apologies if i have forgotten someone important!

so onwards we go will enthusiasm and optimism and a great DJ lineup for our March 22nd gig!! Little Scotty and Mark Randle headlining the event!! please spread the word and lets keep soulfusion buzzing for 2014!!

from one very happy but exhausted promoter & DJ
