Northernsoul Allnighters

Allnighter at Worcester University

Promoting an Allnighter is rather like trying to get a hit record, no matter how good the singer and the production the record will only be a hit if the buying public are inspired and it is that invisible X Factor that more than often will frustrate and elude but when something “clicks” it becomes a triumph.

Of course there are some formulated rules, you need to have advertising, DJ’s with credible records who understand the fickleness of the dancer and who are flexible and brave enough to play rare, underplayed and new sounds without damaging the fragile momentum of the flow yet maintaining credibility, this is not a Soul Night after all, all of the usual facilities need to be in place but the venue does not need to be swanky.

We see far too often Northernsoul Allnighters appearing then disappearing and all often have their day in the sun then dim like a dying star, this is sad yet our scene has death and rebirth and on Saturday Night we witnessed the birth of a new Northernsoul Allnighter at Worcester University steered by Chris Burton and John Ambler, all of the ticks were in the appropriate boxes, it is on a university campus similar to Keele and the facilities are new and modern yet there is character.

The Allnighter was thumping on our arrival, we had driven a considerable distance but this is all part of the evening and a journey spent with like minded people is a joy and sets the scene. As soon as we arrived the first thing I noticed was the door staff are not in your face and we were not subjected to the nonsensical “Border Crossing Searches” that have crept into the Allnighter Scene of late and the talcum powder police had taken the day off. I take my hat off to the management for this and it set the tone for a relaxed cool evening, thank you.

Sadly Keith Minshull was poorly and couldn’t play and we all hope you get well soon. There was a reshuffle of the DJ line up and all of the spinners took the challenge and raised their game. Glenn Walker-Foster gave an excellent account of him self playing some monsters and the tempo was set, to be honest at this moment the dance floor was kicking and everyone was well up for a good thrash. The crowd was a health mixture of the Allnighter faces and Soul Night punters, such is the norm now days and the atmosphere was that of party and Glenn kept the momentum and helped set the pace for the evening.

It was a privilege to hear John Vincent spinning his excellent record box and I must admit to having one of those tingling moments as I watch John talking to Chris Burton and Ted Massey and as daft as it may seam some of my former life played out in my mind as I watch for a moment some of the stalwarts who made this scene what it is but I am not interested in nostalgia and that can remain the domain of the Soul Night, I am interested in the now and listening to John Vincent completely smashing it was a sweet sensation and you have to acknowledge both John’s pedigree, enthusiasm and will to keep the Northernsoul Wheels moving forward and that was always his thrust, superb set!

Ted Massey has a record box that I would love to dive into, I have seen Ted play ultra rare to connoisseurs and he can hold his own with the chin strokers yet he has the awareness and records to thump it hard and hard he did on Saturday! I loved it and you could see that both Ted and John were right up for it and the vibe passed onto the dance floor and was devoured by the crowd! I think chemistry and mutual respect raised both of their games and you could taste the quality.

For an age now I have grown quite weary of Allnighters advertising “An across the board” policy then throwing in a slack handful of seventies followed by yet again another mind numbingly boring tsunami of Sixties which is fine and dandy but I always feel ripped off especially when driving such a distance only to discover that the Seventies have been written out of the Allnighter program but Saturday Night was different.

Casper and Mark Freeman didn’t just nod towards the Seventies they celebrated it and the dance floor reacted brilliantly and it was encouraging and inspiring to hear some Seventies dancers dusted off and re-spun, I predict that this is where the new renaissance will be, watch this space!

I truly thank and congratulate Chris Burton, John Ambler and team for a superb Allnighter! Great to see and reassuring that our scene is marching onwards and forwards! We will be back to the Allnighter at Worcester University

Not a frown in the place as the dancers and listeners alike lapped up the great mix of music all in one room , giving an atmosphere that was electric ..
