22nd 6TS Cleethorpes Weekender Details

The longest running and best soul weekender in the world will be at it again on the 13th June for three days of mayhem and rare Northern and Modern soul sounds.

DJs will include Butch, Mick Smith, Keith Money, Mick H, Ginger, Bob Hinsley, Roger Banks, Dave Rimmer and Ady Croasdell in the main room and Terry Jones, Ivor Jones, Andy Davies, Mark Randle, Cliff Steele and Just Soul's Sean & Tats. Soul Sam will flit between the two.

The live US acts on the Saturday night will be as stupendous as ever (last year Bettye Swann) but I'm still sorting them out.

The event is legendary and the venue is a classic ballroom which oozes atmosphere. Don't miss out.

Weekend passes are £59 by cheque to 6TS Weekenders, 10 Hatfield House, 108 Gt Titchfield St London W1W 6SN or £61 PayPal to ady.croasdell@btinternet.com

The on-site accomodation has gone so you have to sort out your own. Most use Thorpe Park caravan site next door 01472 813395 http://www.haven.com/parks/lincolnshire/thorpe-park/

The 6TS Rhythm ‘n’ Soul Society is pleased as punch to announce that Sandy Wynns and Greg Perry will be our live acts at the 22nd Cleethorpes Northern & Modern Soul Weekender on June 14th 2014.

It will be the first time Sandy aka Edna Wright has performed her Northern Soul classics ‘Love Belongs To Everyone’, ‘I’ll Give That To You’, ‘How Can Something Be So Wrong’ and of course the forever monster sound ‘The Touch Of Venus’.  She will perform more sensuous soul sizzlers including the Modern Soul highlight ‘Oops! Here I Go Again’. Additionally there will be Honey Cone numbers from her successful career at Hot Wax/Invictus. Sandy has been at the forefront of the Los Angeles female backing singers’ scene that cut so many international hits over the past four decades. That incredible work was recently documented with reference to several of her friends and colleagues in the Oscar winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom.

Many of those H-D-H period songs were written by the hugely talented Greg Perry who started out as an artist and songwriter in the Chicago and Detroit area. One of his early writing partners was friend of the 6TS @ Cleethorpes, Sidney Barnes. His 1967 Northern double-sider ‘Head Over Heels’ / ‘Love Control’ on Chess set the standard and he composed for the likes of Cookie Scott and Thelma Jones in the 60s before being recruited by Holland, Dozier, Holland for Invictus. There he composed many hits including ‘Somebody’s Been Sleeping In My Bed’ for 100 Proof, ‘Bring The Boys Home’ Freda Payne, ‘Pay To The Piper’ Chairmen Of The Board and ‘Want Ads’ for the Honey Cone.

Like most of the Detroit music scene in the early 70s he moved to Los Angeles; the home of his wife Honey Cone Edna Wright. He produced her 1974 RCA LP there and his own Casablanca LP and singles in 1975 and his RCA LP in 1977. Those two great albums included such Modern Soul gems as ‘Variety Is The Spice Of Life’, Come On Down (Out Of The Clouds)’, and ‘How’s Your Love Life Baby’ and a 1982 swansong for the Alfa label tacked on a Northern Soul smash ‘It Takes Heart’ to the end of an illustrious recording career.

After Bettye Swann’s stunning performance last year I found it tough to come up with an exciting bill for this year. I think that has now been achieved.

See you in June.

Ady

The England V Italy football game will be shown in the Upstairs bars with sound and on a screen in the Modern Room without sound (and a lot of people dancing around in front of you probably!). Great news about the football Ady   as I remember with the Euros, us Soul peasants weren't allowed upstairs, the upstairs was reserved for the caravan owners/non soul folk.   Nice to see we'll be let in the posh part this time  :D

Can't wait for my favourite soul weekender of all time !!!!

See you & everyone else in a couple of weeks

Mr Croasdell step forward & take a bow :hatsoff2: To see the look of trepidation on Ady's face on Friday afternoon at how it was going to pan out & how people would react wasn't a nice sight, then to see his smile broaden hour by hour as everyone took it in there stride & were determined this hiccup wasn't going to ruin there weekend was worth it's weight in gold.It was brilliant to see everyone close ranks to make sure that some suit behind a desk wasn't going to fu#k our fun up.........don't they know who we are

Heard plenty of top tunes, drank to excess then drank some more, was forced to laugh far too much by some of the craziest people around, bought a record........so business as usual the Cleggy way.

There was one particular harrowing incident that has left me scared for life.....I was mistaken by some young lady as Ivor Jones.......I know were both egg shell blond but WTF

Our lot are already planning the mayhem for next years so looks like we'll be there

Cheers

Martyn or should that be Ivor

Just back from another weekend of soul hedonism. We improvised and adapted like we always do and will. Good times with great friends, hats off to Horace.

I think the scene will survive as long as they don't close Wigan Casino ;)

Cheers Ady again.

Have to agree with the comments above, excellent weekender.

I was on Edmonton Green platform when I received a text from John Stubbs about the curtailing of the hours, was it a wind up? But in the end it didn't really matter as we carried on the night in our caravan, thankfully Paul McKay had brought his turntable and record box and kept the music going.

One of the best things about the Cleethorpes weekend is that you see friends from all over the country, sometimes the only time you see them. The social side of our scene is very important imo.

I heard some great music in both rooms, thanks to all the DJs, especially to Butch and Keith Money who played my requests' That's The Way The Story Goes (Martha Jean Love cover up) and Ask My Heart (Eddie Billups) respectively on Sunday afternoon, the lyrics of the latter song would make a good love poem.

So many good sets, a special mention to Mick H's medium tempo Sunday afternoon set, and Butch had me dancing for the whole of his Sunday set, needed a good sit down after it.

I spent most of Sunday evening in the Modern room where Cliff Steele and Steve Womble played a real party set, even had some of the records played myself, cheapies of course.

We had a nice caravan with more room than usual in the living area and kitchen. Thanks to John Stubbs for the lift, and to Paul and Helen, John, and Martin Thomson for their company, especial thanks to Helen for the main meals she provided us with, you kept us civilised.

And a final thanks to Ady, it must have been very difficult for him at the start, and to all the DJs and staff of the Beachcomber.

I said it in an earlier post, and I'll say it again, Cleethorpes Weekender is my FAVOURITE Soul weekender of ALL time and that's the way it will always be!!!!

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy other weekender's that I attend (for different reasons), but there's something extra special about this little weekender, it's like spending a jolly weekend with family (family that you like of course!)   The weekender & I have grown up with each other since day 1, and we're definitely going to grow old together too!!

Lovely to meet Stacey's Dad, thanks for grabbing me & taking me to the Oldsoulgit who's face I've seen for years (it was nice having a giggle with you & I'm sorry I threw you by not wearing the T-shirt!!).  Was also great to say hello to Stubbsy (Yorkshire !!!) & nice to say hello to Geoff again.

Need to also thank the Cluggy's for inviting me to their World Cup party, what a scream!! & wait till you see the photos!!! (to be loaded up here soon)

Well done Ady for giving us another great memory to add to our wonderful collection :hatsoff2: Only one thing left to say ......................................."here's to the next one!!"

All the very best

Ali xxx

Edit: photo's are here for those who are interested

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments and encouragement, I really needed it this year. However I think we pulled off a remarkable feat, a Northern Soul All Nighter weekender without all nighters.

There were no complaints at all once the situation was explained and everybody's attitude was a massive credit to the rare and Northern scene. There are too many to thank individually and it was really a huge group effort, as witnessed by the beery group hugs on the Sunday night. What I expected to be the worst weekend of my professional life turned into one of the best, thanks so much. We should be fine to do it again next year but with nighters for a bit of a novelty! Ady
