Hi all,

And talking of time flying if i'm not very much mistake today is the first day of autum and on this side of the Snake it's been a lovely sunny and warm day for the best part of it and hot enough to take one's shirt off and talking of which as promised and this one is definitely for the ladies here is Captain Dave "Woody" Wood in a more nautical mood.

Evening Frank,

No comment yet from Cap'n Wood but a photo too good not to share with the CCS regulars and hopefully i'll be forgiven enough on my next visit to The Old Nags Head to be allowed through the doors but being let loose behind the decks might be another story!

Well still pretty sunny over here at the moment but as the weather starts to get a little bit more autummnal the annual heath MOT might be an item on the agenda which leads me into this story.....

Hmm...yes, the rich deep hue of a Burgundy...
I'm picking up the scent of blackcurrents and honey with some light, buttery notes...
Yes...there's a subtle backdrop of autumn fruits...
Oooh...a hint of spices...nutmeg, ginger...and a touch of pepper.
It's big, full flavoured...it practically dances on the palate.

"So Doctor, there's no problem with my urine sample then?"

Evening fellas,

Argh yes Woody a CCS calander now that would be something to behold, Frank as Mr September myself as Mr November and the rest of the guest CCS DJ's making up the other months....the mind boggles as they say!

Personal Ad:
Male model, Tall, Dark, Handsome, 25, Millionaire; seeks gullible stunner.

Funny-Fat-People-Funny-Fat-People-019-Fu

Well best get on with a spot of business, and for those of you who have asked, the "CCS Top Ten" will be arriving any day into my e.mail in-tray and will get posted as soon as possible but in the meantime here are a few selections from the up and coming playlist to feature on the 28th....

Tonights selection come from "Mr October" himself

Teddy Randazzo "You Don't Need A Heart" DCP International Records

Perhaps far better known for his song writing than his singing New York born Randazzro is no stranger to the world of popular music along firstly with his song composing partner, Bobby Weinstien then later with Bobby Hart, Randanzzo and Wienstien have the honour of having one of the world most recored songs in history to their credit that being the classic namely "Goin' Out Of My Head" and is now officially included in the Top 50 most recorded songs of all time with sales in excess of 100 million by well over 400 artists and is often reguared as production masterpiece.

"You Don't Need A Heart" seems talior made for the full "Little Anthony And The Imperials" treatment but it's Teddy Randazzo who does the vocal honours this time, with a big studio production that is there from the very opening bars and with it's tender but well delievered vocal this is a very well produced (also by Randazzro) "beat ballard" that echoes the names Bacharach and David but this is very much a compliment and not a criticism, "You Don't Need A Heart" packs a very much emotionally charged performance into a mere 2:29, with a huge musical build up that punches well above it's weight and then some" this is truely a classy track that can only be said is going to gain in value over the coming years.

On a lighter note Woody (or Mr October as we now call him) informs me this latest acquisition is little more than a collection filler and will be moved along when a better copy comes on the market as the discs play quality leaves a lot to be desired [and on a confessional note i was bidding on the same record without knowing and might have helped push the auction price up!]

***Also checkout Patti Page's version of "You Dont Need A Heart" on Columbia Records ***

Evening Frank,

If i was to hazard a guess i would say "Somebody Stole My Thunder" but Georgie if you're reading this please don't play or go anywhere near "The Ballad Of Bonnie And Clyde (the gun battle section in the original recording is truely awful) and Frank please don't request it!

Frankie "M" Is The CCS Man For September

captionit4234834459B82_zps207235e9.jpg

So best be moving on with some more CCS selections from "Mr Octobers" box, and here we also have some "Woody's words of wisdom" Woody informs me, "if you are after a copy of ths cut by Stevie Wonder on 7' vinyl look out for the entire Motown Box Set 7's Vol 2 and buy the record as part of the set at one point copies were changing hands for upwards of £25, while a complete set with this inclued can be had if your lucky for around the £50 mark at most (and Woody picked his set via Amazon for far less than that) see link below!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Motown-Box-Volume-VINYL/dp/B00JA0HE0K%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAIXMCBZWUOROXOPDQ%26tag%3Dxxsa01-21%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00JA0HE0K&ascsubtag=CP6uyurNh8ECFcsJwwodHhAAsQ

You get an extra 6 records for £25 making the other disc only £5 each [Vol 1 is spilt all the time]

Stevie Wonder "I Want My Baby Back" Tamla Motown (From The Box Set "Motown 7's Box Set Vol 2)

"I Want My Baby Back" by Stevie Wonder only saw light of day on the "Uptight" album released here on the Tamla Motown record label and the British Music For Pleasure album of the same name, the song did get a US release by Edwin Starr on both the US Gordy and the UK Tamla Motown label (strangely the writing credits are different on this single by Edwin Starr to the ones on the listed on the MFP album)

Both versions are pretty similar but perhaps to my ears the Stevie Wonder version packs a little more punch, with a great finger clicking intro that means business from the very start and with a pounding beat and driving lyrics that don't stop to take a breath or for that matter even think to draw air, throw into the mix a combination of the Funk Brothers and Earl Van Dyke and here we have a pretty high octane dancer paced on the just over easy setting on "the dance'o'meter" with a raspy sax break that shouts Motown. "I Want My Baby Back" moves along like juiced up tsunami but it's the beat that sets this Detroit spin a little bit above the rest. Once more proving just how much talent and class were at Motown when the likes of this track was reserved for an album use only.

were accepted were good value .

Terry Callier "Look At Me Now" Cadet Records

From 1968 on the Chess Record off shot Cadet we have cut that seem more '70's than '60's but perhaps ahead of it's time this in no way detracts from the song and if anything keeps a freshness about it that sometimes so many record often seem so time locked by musical style or production and often both yet "Look At Me Now" manages to ride high above such general stereotyping.

Co-written by Callier and arranged by Charles Stepney who later went onto greater fame with global superstars Earth , Wind and Fire, yet this crossover sound seems to sit so well with a more discerning soul public of today, with Callier's understated vocal and the songs inspirational lyrics are both clear and up lifting.

With a big and classy brass section with the trumpets doing a standout job and with driving percusion "Look At Me Now" cruises along in top gear, upbeat and infectious this slice of Chicago soul is perhaps is even more of today than yesterday and is often said to be somewhat of an often under respected soul classic, a once more common disc just a couple of years ago than now and prices have risen in recent years to reflect this, putting this in the league of considered purchase records.

Chess did a re-issue of the track backed with Etta James's "7 Day Fool" and that comes in around the £20 plus mark and with "Look At Me Now"  making a very welcome change from Callier's other Northern Soul favorite "Ordinary Joe" that i believe is verging on the well and truely over played list of titles.

Hi  Woody,

Glad you finally have a copy of the Terry Callier disc and as you say, not that easy to lay your hands on and very much a considered purchase of a record, and a very worth spin for the 25th!

Well the wasps are getting a little quieter as the weather has cooled off a lot but a venture into the bathroom has a far more edge of danger than ever before with some of them taking on Kamikaze dive-bomber tatics while you're showering.

I went to casualty yesterday and said to the nurse, "I've been stung by a wasp, have you got anything for it?"

The nurse replied, "Whereabout's is it?"

I said, "I don't know, it could be f***ing miles away by now."

wasp_00043065_zps34fa9d17.jpg

Well it's one from me for the time being, more from Woody and Frank in the coming few days, so here is a one from the Big Russ colection!

Derek Christian "Suddenly There's A Valley" Major Minor UK and Germany release only

Okay so now you're all aware that i do like a lot of the slower ballard type "Popcorn" sounds and here is a home grown offering from Derek Christian and although not "Popcorn" in the truest sense of the word it's still a pretty fine sound.

"Suddenly There's A Valley" has done the rounds a little and has been recored by many artists over the years such as Jo Stafford, Petula Clarke and even a very strage version by The Drifters that sounds like it's being played at the wrong speed and the covers of the song seem almost endless but this take on the song is from 1970 and is far fresher and more up tempo than the other versions before it.

With it's big production that jumps into action from the very start of the song and gives a well produced and arranged musical performance on all counts and add to this a well sung vocal from Derek Christian (but i wish he could have kept the guttural chants well away from the recording studio)

The musical director on this track was Nicky Welsh who's pedigee is premiership arranger, working with a whole array of British stars from Billy J. Kramer And The Dakotas, Cilla Black, David Essex, Dorothy Squires, Geno Washington And The Ram Jam Band, Long John Baldry and celebrity pedo Rolf Harris to name but some of them.

Sweeping and light on the ear, this soulful ballard is filled with a full orchestra that is so classy and understated that you really have to say "they don't make 'em like this anymore" perhaps shades of Tom Jones in both delivery and musical treatment but after saying that a pretty and easy to dance to soul stepper, and yours from around the £30+ mark/

Hi Frank,

   5fd0cd00-3a47-4e61-b17a-360d3b568016_zps

But as we're all well aware it is now pretty apparent that we are well and truely in Autumn and it's looking like the shirt will have to stay on until next year but as the weather gets colder you can be assured that the CCS musical policy will be turning the heat up and proving that the hottest sounds can be found on the turntables of The Old Nags Head on the 25th.

So starting as we mean to go on here is the first out of the box this month for CCS's Mr September aka Frankie "M"

Did you know?

All the seasons are named after coils of metal.

Except Winter, Summer, and Autumn!

625cef30-8453-489e-a8e0-448e933080ac_zps

The Artistics "The Chase Is On" Brunswick Records

From the very accomplished group The Artistics we have a cut from 1967 on the New York Brunswick record label after leaving Okeh the year before after having initial sucess with their release "This Heart Of Mine" that was to become a number 25 hit on The Billboard R&B charts a staple of the Northern Soul world, sadly their next to releases faild to make any dent on the charts and they left to join Brunswick.

Success soon followed with "I'm Gonna Miss You" a top ten Billboard R&B hit and "Girl I Need You" that made the mid twenties a year later in the groups members the original singer was one Charles Davis perhaps better known as Nolan Chance and replaced by Marvin Smith an ex Tempos member.

"The Chase Is On"  is somewhat of a mixture of musical themes starting in an almost typical later style crossover style (quite advanced for a record from '67) and blending elements of Funk with hints of an early Philly sound into it, with some beating conga drums that just pound and pound away and perhaps once more being ahead of the musical game with the use of them and in it's day quite uncommon and with some slick backing harmonies and more than a helping of a big brass section playing in perfect time this is one more often passed over play from a vastly over looked group and if listen carefully you'll catch those sweeping strings that are so very laid back their almost horizontial.

A record not heard played as once it was and mores the pity but Frank intends to put a stop to that so perhaps now is the time to buy a copy while the prices are still in the £25+ region for an original copy (the CCS playlist does have an habit of pushing prices up)

Afternoon Woody,

And yes feedback for the 25th is looking very healthy and numbers are growing all the time, well done team lots of hard work has gone into each and every CCS event prior to this one and the hard work and devotion is still a paramount factor in the "City Centre Soul" ethic of bringing all who attend a great night and of course two final mentions the tireless work of the CCS foot soldiers who come rain or shine are out there flyering and spreading the "CCS Word" and the fantastic people who attend these events i salute you!

aed19bd0-cfec-4a2a-af83-54542dabe9cc_zps

Well on that note here'a another one from the Manley collection.

Bobby Bland "Honey Child" Duke Records / Vocalion Records UK release

Jazz based latino dancer from 1964 from the huge Bobby Bland catalouge of tunes and another song to fall victim to the Belgian practice of pitch changing to give it a far more "Euro Pocorn" feel to it (and in my opion not just spoiling the song but killing it!) but there's no such thing here the record is as intened.

"Honey Child" is the "B" side to "Ain't Nothing You Can Do" that was to manage a number 20 chart postion on The Billboard Hot 100, and a pretty decent soulful spin in it's own right but the honours in this review go to "Honey Child" and the infectious beat of this song is so cool you'll want to be donning the slickest Italian suit that your perhaps larger than it once was frame will let you.

A well fitting Bobby Bland vocal that might not be the smoothest out there yet that all important feel is there and with the addition of a great brass section and trumpets that never miss a beat and reach every note everytime, some tasty brush drum symbol work and a touch of funky guitar all worked into the mixture like a well baked cake every ingredient compliments the others and for the Jazz groove steppers amongst you'll be getting on that dance floor and doing your thang, interesting choice of song from the versertile Bobby "Blue" Bland and perhaps somewhat of a left field spin from Frank.

Evening team,

Seeming a lot more like Autumn here today and the long hot day of summer (it was a Wednesday this year) all but seem a distant memory and we'll be having Hallowe'en shortly so mor on that theme to be coming...nagh i'm having you on here's an Hallowe'en story to set the mood.

An husband and his wife had a bitter quarrel on the day of their 50th wedding anniversary.

The husband yells, "When you die, I'm getting you a headstone that reads, 'Here Lies My Wife - Cold As Ever'."

"Yeah" she replies, "When you die, I'm getting you a headstone that reads, 'Here Lies My Husband - Stiff At Last.'"

caused a bit of interest on the forum with my £25 and under set , shows you there are loads of tunes out there " sleeping "

and ready for re-activation that don't break the bank but are quality tunes ,so lets have a top five ! , am thinking though

of Spyder Turner " I cant make it " , a floor filler and cheap as chips and certainly a stand by if you just cant get

the floor moving ,what do you think ?

Hi Frank,

Hope you're coming round a little from "The Hotdog Dance" Donald really has some moves and that boy can sure dance and on a similar thread the American animation company of Hannah Barbera [Top Cat,The Flintstones, Scooby Doo, ect] have more than a linking to the Northern Soul scene, perhaps their most well know tie is via The Dynatones and their 1966 instrumental recording "The Fife Piper" released on the HBR records (Hannah Barbera Records) a disc that was first released on St Clair Records and given a slight re-working before being re-released On HBR and if the urban legend is to be believed was to be used in one of their many cartoon series.

Yet how many know that the lead vocal of cartoon girl group "Josie And The Pussycats" was one Patrice Holloway (younger sister of Motown legend Brenda Holloway) and it was Patrice who gave us such soul gems as "Stolen Hours", "Love And Desire" and "Ecstacy" (these two are both "A" and "B" sides on the 1967 Capitol Records release) and many other titles.

***Also Hollywood actress Cheryl Ladd famous as Kris Munroe in the hit TV series "Charlie's Angles" was the singing voice of Melody the bands drummer***

Yeah that's the CCS policy Frank, something for everyone I'm not too sure how many of these plays I've mentioned would get deck time at The Nags Head but at the right event all of them are popular or for a spot of "Youth Club Soul" you've got 25% of your DJ spot sorted on original vinyl for bargin basement prices.

Woody have to echo your words entirely, i'm a great believer in the old adage "of play to the floor" and from my own personal slant on DJ'ing that's all part of your job to get the crowd dancing be it from bargin basement youth club sounds to hard hitting R'n'B or to Motown standards "the dance floor doesn't lie"

Also Woody your comments on the merits of "I'm playing this for *insert name here* is so often seen and credit to any DJ who want's to play a more left-field set but as with all things, everything has a time and a place and dedicating an entier set to you spouse and having tumble weeds blow across an empty dance floor isn't the way to go unless your other halfs choice of records encompasses the likes of the other people there on the night.

Yes as the old saying goes "you can't please all of the people all of the time" and that's true but the CCS musical policy that both yourself and Frank adhere to really does try to engage all fields of the Soul spectrum and the growing numbers of CCS regulars and newcomers stands testement to this.

Guest DJ's are always of a respected caliber and never just "line-up fillers" well done fellas on bringing the best night to all who attend each and every CCS event and by keeping the playlists new and fresh the chances of "The Nags Head" becoming a pure night of musical fomular is not going to happen both Woody and Frank make sure new plays are alway interspaced with requested titles so once more well done lads and a massive mention to the power behind the throne Miss T who is far more than just a pretty face.

Today "The Nags Head" tomorrow Hollywood!

Well after a day where it's done everything weather wise apart from snow (we did get some hail though) my attempts yesterday to do the last bit of decent weather garden maintenances seems to have made little difference as the lawn is a foot thick in leaves and take away cartons now..argh the English seasons!

Glad to hear you had a great night Frank and as we talk they're two copies of Georgie's "Somebody Stole My Thunder" for sale £50 for a buy it now on a pre-dinked UK 2nd limited re-issue CBS demo (i seem to think all these re-issues are put out as demos) and £73 for genuine UK CBS issue *** (but i seem to think the same re-issue can be bought for far less than the £50 buy it now price but don't hold me to that statement.

***at the time of writing"

So here just for you Frank is record in question the top Mod sound of "Somebody Stole My Thunder" and a funky little video.

Well not satisfied with the talents of the lovely Miss T our Illustrious leader has brought me in as the substitute PA as either Miss T has a monster workload or the pressure of last Saturday at Mexbrough's "Corner Pocket" and getting ready for this months CCS event at "The Old Nags Head" has wore her out.

Captain Wood informs me that the feedback for the 25th is excellent and he's been busy buying one or two more records for your listening pleasure (some great tunes to be heard might i add) and a set sure to deliever, Frank is chomping at the bit and is as we speak busy sorting his "record box of delights" out

And Les the special guest DJ is well and truly looking forward to his visit, so remember people for a qulity night of the best Northern Soul and Rhythm'n' Blues around get on down to CCS at "The Old Nags Head"

Hi'ya Russ,

two hundred & twentyseven quids absolutely ridiculous. Bought mine when I was about fifteen or sixteen from "Valences" for about 50p or some daft amount like that. Some Folks have got more money than sense, it's not even a Soul record, it's more of a Mod sound. I would'nt mind if it were a big spin or in demander, but it's not either of those.

Well lets put it this way, I would'nt pay that kind of money for a record such as this......  :hatsoff2:

Well team almost there,

So come 8:00 pm tomorrow October's CCS will open it's doors once more to offer some of the finest sounds around and talking of which here is the final instalment from Altringham's own Frankie M, take it away Frank!

Hallowe'en Joke

ad19504d-a9b5-4d13-ade9-b2f33dba4e88_zps  A woman brings eight-year-old little Johnny home and tells his mother that he was caught playing doctors and nurses with little Mary, her eight-year-old daughter.

Johnny's mother says, "Let's not be too harsh on them... they are bound to be curious about sex at that age."

"Curious about sex?" replies Mary's mother. "He's taken her f***ing appendix out!"

Jackie Wilson "Love Uprising" Brunswick Records

From the legendry Jackie Wilson comes this track from 1970 and the "B" side to "This Love Is Real" writen by Eugene Record former taxi driver and lead vocalist with the Chicago based quartet The Chi-lites.

And keeping to an earlier thread from Frank about great records that won't break the bank here is one of them and an original copy should be yours for under the £25 mark, perhaps over looked a few years ago but as tempos have slowed down over recent years this slower pace soul cut sits firmly in the less energetic category of dance tunes.

With a pretty well sung Jackie "Mr. Excitement" Wilson vocal that might not be in his list of premiership performances but still a vocal job that so many singer would give their hight teeth to get anywhere near it, with a fully staffed studio orchestra that never once over step the mark and excuse the pun but play second fiddle to Jackie's vocals and the studio backing singers (The Chi_lites perhaps?) are also excllent never once stepping an any toes.rgely responsible for the studio's exceptional sound was future engineering legend, Bruce Swedienthe mixing board and largely responsible for the studio's exceptional sound was future engineering legend, Bruce Swedienhind the mixing board and largely

With it's airy floting feel "Love Uprising" hits that certain spot and showcase the talent that was Jackie Wilson and although the chart success of his 1960's hayday had gone and the hits had stopped coming the shear quality of his recordings stand testement to his immense talent.

A passion fuled soul dancer that's price tag doesn't reflect it's real musical worth.

Sorry Woody missed your post as such!

Seems a lot to me to be honest but some records seem to be going of the scale at the moment a copy of Jackie Trent's "You Baby" on British Pye standard issue has gone for £102 on fleabay-logo_zpsa97b26de.png

And now at that price is at least twices as expensive as the Len Barry version on Decca and the original release by The Ronnettes on the British London record label by at least four times.

imagestoptip_zps266c5cc0.jpg to all record sellers, just add the words Northern Soul to your record sales heading and increse the prices of you records for sale at one key stroke!

Mr Steady, Frankie M setting the pace for the evening and doing a sterling session and helping to build your a reputation as a soild choice DJ and willing to go a little left field but always hitting the mark when the time comes.

The ships captain Dave "Woody" Wood  a man that can not only swap musical styles but manage to blend them so well you won't even see the join.

Well Hello Boys!

And a very Big Hello it is from our temporary Ile Saint-Louis hideaway where me and Mr. Wood are having a bit of R and R after a couple of busy soul weekends.  I have been busy behind the scenes as always but I am mightily impressed with the way in which you boys have been managing the postings and getting the word out in support of yet another fantastic night at City Centre Soul at the Old Nag's Head.  Saturday was an absolute cracker of a night...I was kept very very busy on the door and the dancefloor was buzzing all night starting from Mr Frankie M's most impressive set to date and leading on to fantastic work by both Mr. Les Hare and of course our own Mr. Wood.  The number of new faces at each event is a triumph showing that all the hard work of both the team and our fliering agents and supporters who give out the word pays off so well in so many ways.  I got plenty of genuinely positive feedback about the quality of the music as there were plenty of real collectors with an eye and an ear for the original vinyl and those that understand the depth and range of the playlists on offer.  The dancefloor was kept extremely busy as a result.  So as City Centre Soul goes from strength to strength me and Mr. Wood are beginning to get busy on the details of the upcoming post Christmas and pre-New Year Party  on Saturday 27th December for which we are expecting another really good crowd.  Its becoming one not to miss.

So as soon as I can manage it I will post a few pics from Saturday to whet appetites for the next CCS video due out shortly before the next event in December.  In the meantime me and Mr.Wood are pretending that we are Parisiens for real and will be working hard at frequenting the bars and restaurants in the locality, its a pity that Woody's strong Yorkshire accent and way with words slightly hinders this project, but in the end how many ways are there to say 'more beer over here please?'

Fantastic night, fantastic work by MY team...and fantastic support from everyone who attended. Cant get better than that!

Will be whipping the team into shape over the coming weeks....I will leave you to imagine what this might entail but standards are high and must be maintained.  No slacking allowed under Miss T's direction

Love as always, Miss T the  CCS P.A to the DJs
