This event is now over. Look up now to read the latest reviews of this soul event

I didn't think I'd be posting this event for a long time, but unfortunately this will be the last Kay Gee Bee soul night at the Bar Abbey. A new management team are taking over the downstairs, Bar Abbey and Snooker Club, for reasons only known to them all future events are now going to be cancelled. Obviously everyone is gutted about this, myself and Ann, Andy and his team, who are the current managers and who have worked wonders into turning it into a fantastic live music venue for local bands, as well as letting us carry on the KGB soul nights, and not forgetting all the KGB regulars who have supported myself and Ann for all those years, everyone of you mean so much to us and we couldn't have done it without you. Also a massive thanks to all the D.J.'s that have done spots for me and of course, think of all the local D.J.'s who started off D.J.'ing down those stairs.

The very first night was a free entry and I'm doing the same for the last, but people will be asked to donate to a local charity, yet to be decided. As from day one this night was done for the love of the music and you, the great people that are northern soulies.

Also I've decided to open the room next door and have the Horti' crew plus Andy Jones play some rare and underplayed tunes, some of my favourites will get played I'm sure of that.

See you all on the night, Barry and Ann, KGB, KTF.

Seven day Lover was playing as we walked down the stairs into the club followed by Seven Days is to long and Nine time out of Ten.

Never to be forgotten and got me hooked ever since.

Having spoke with Barry a few days ago and to find out what is happening to the club.

I would hope that this last Night is packed with all the SOULIES that have had many a great night in KGB over the many years that

Barry and Ann put all there hart and soul in to keeping this great club going.

It will be with heavy hearts and a tear in many a SOULIES eye as we walk back up those stairs for the last time.

SO COME ON DOWN HELP MAKE IT A GREAT NIGHT TO REMEMBER FOR BARRY AND ANN AS A WAY OF SAYING THANK YOU FOR ALL THE GOOD TIMES.

I'm sure i won't be the first or last for that matter that is greatly saddened by the loss of this great venue after 14 full years of commitment and solid dedication by Barry and Ann Holland who have come to be affectionately known as both "Mr & Mrs KGB" and who really have poured their heart and soul into every event, their passion and true love of the music must be applauded and even more so when Barry has struggled with some serious health problems during this time but without fail still somehow managed to put on a monthly event come hail or shine when so many others would have let things fall to the wayside with only a fraction of the problems encountered.

So very often new management think they can do better than what is already there and to use the old adage "a new broom sweeps clean" argh yes but that might be the case "but an old brush knows all the corners" and to finish a very well establish and successful monthly event that incurs no financial outlay from the management apart from just the supplying of bar staff that are there to sell drinks for the company anyway seems frankly ludicrous and even more so in the extremely hard and competitive economic climate of today's market on a gamble of "we think we can do better!"

Kevin, it was a very similar story for me and the same year too, yet the song that was playing as i descended down those stone steps in what now was the old "Kay Gee Bee" (and perhaps even kick-starting my love affair with cellar bars) was "Bella Delana" by the Marketts the only other records i can remember from that first night were, James Coit's "Black Power" and the bizarre Travis Wamack's instrumental offering "Scratchy" (a take on Mel Tormes "Comin' Home Baby")

Once again Barry and Ann you have given so much pleasure to so many people over the years and i for one thank you most sincerely for all you have done for the past 15 glorious years, sadly i never got the chance to get behind those famous decks as the clock ticked off on me before my scheduled appearance later in the year but i'm sure it would have been a great experience and a wonderful night.

The Kay Gee Bee might be sadly almost gone but it most certainly won't be forgotten!

Here's the very first record i heard all those years ago on my first visit to the Kay Gee Bee for anyone who is unfamiliar with the song.

The Marketts "Bella Delana"

Wishing you both all the very best.

THE KGB, "It'll never be over" so the tune says, end of an era maybe, and a massive part of Soulies way of life at this incredible cellar bar run by Barry & Anne Holland so succesfully over this last decade or so. - they are loved & respected by thousands of people everywhere - not only a great inspiration rejuvinating a neglected  soul scene into what today is fenominal once again, but always commanded a hefty following at any gig they were GUEST DJ's -On behalf of of our Victory club where we try to book Barry as often as possible a massive thanks.  Mr & Mrs Holland will be on the decks here there & everywhere - hope fully at our club S.A.P------ be aware!! this will be a night to remember not to missed, bring cameras & lots of tissues

and for all the beautiful music over the years TO YOU BOTH  & the KGB (should be awarded MBE for musical excellence) THANKYOU & keep on keeping the faith

This is the place where I first got back behind the decks, about 10 years ago, after a long, long lay-off. As you can imagine, it's a special place for me, but it's also special for the loads of terrific people we have met there over the years, many of whom are now very good friends. The regular room is legendary, but I am dead chuffed to have been asked to look after the second room, with my colleagues from the Horti, and a couple of extra jocks, to really bring the Kay Gee Bee to a close in the finest style possible. The friends will still be here of course long after, and the memories, so, if you can, come along and give Barry and Ann, and this perfect dive bar, and its excellent staff, the finest 'Thank You' ever. Fifteen years ago there was pretty much no soul scene in Sheffield. Look at it now. Acorns and Oak trees? See you all Saturday!!!!

Thanks for all great comments guys. It's been my pleasure to have run this event for over 14 years and met so many friends who have become more than friends and more like family, soul family. It looks like being absolutely rammed, so be early and we will go out on a real high. At least we are finishing at the top and not because of falling attendances because the regular KGB 'ers are so loyal. See you all later, just off to set up for the last time. KTF.

Really disappointed in the enforced cancellation of the KGB. I have been attending for only the last couple of years but there is something homely and welcoming in this small, atmospheric, and quirky venue. It will always be one of my favourites.

Looking forward to going out with a bang! Thanks Barry and Ann for some special memories.

Well you were all right. It did go out with a bang. Fantastic turnout for a great venue. I will even miss the dodgy parts of the dance floor!. Second Saturdays will not be the same. Terry

Sorry for late reply, apart from being worn out after the last night, I've had a few hospital appointments and just taking things steady for a while. Not looking for anything myself just yet but will be doing guest spots for other people.

A friend is starting up a do at the O2 Academy, which I've been asked to do the first one alongside Mopsey, Nigel Filmer and Bob H. By the time you get this message I'm sure you will have heard about it. It's onJune 14th. I'm also doing a guest spot at Killamarsh, July 5th I think. So a few to be going on with but really having to take things easy. ATB. KTF.
