What's the bus service like on a Sunday back to Stoke railway station?  Might make it over if I can work out logistics

Not sure pal, will try to find out....there's usually folk making same trip in taxis so you could always share one if so, and plenty that will have to drive back that way who could drop you off. I'm there till the end, so if Ive got room in my car I can do same.

Thanks Mace, I'm sure I'll find someone heading that way in the evening, a lift to Stoke in the morning would be good, though not essential as I booked a fairly late train back to London, might do the car boot between the train station and the bus station, if it's still on, it's been a while since I was in Stoke

I'm training back to London Kimbo, flying back to Spain on the Monday morning from Gatwick, so it'll be a hectic one, I have to be back at work on the Tuesday.  I should be there, barring a coronary on the way.  See you there, Dave.

Hey Chalky

Don't you just hate Spam pate' vol-au-vent eating free loaders !

Put me down for a sales table as far away from Nick as possible I know how aggressive he gets when he can't find the key on a tin of corned beef.

You can get some great deals on party food in Iceland if Mick H is buying, save us a couple of piece's of packora.

Who's bringing the Shreddies for first thing in the morning ?

How do you get there....you follow the yellow brick road of course :D

FROM M6

Exit M6 from Junction 15 if coming from South, or Junction 16 if coming from North onto the A500 towards Stoke.
Exit the A500 at the A50 Meir / Uttoxeter / Derby junction, passing S.C.F.C. Britannia Stadium on right..
Turn off A50 on 3rd exit for Longton East and Normacot. Turn left and head towards Longton on Uttoxeter Rd.
About 50 yards further down Uttoxeter Road turn right onto Meir Hay Road
Follow this road and it bends to the left - it then becomes Sutherland Road after bend.
BIDDS is down this road on right side, just after petrol station and hardware store on same side.
Drive to bottom left hand corner of car park for entrance.
FROM DERBY/UTTOXETER/NOTTS etc on A50. Exit A50 on Normacot slip road (about half mile after Meir Tunnel).
Turn right at top of slip road, going back over the top of the A50 and head towards Longton (East)
About 50 yards further down Uttoxeter Road turn right onto Meir Hay Road
Follow this road and it bends to the left - it then becomes Sutherland Road after bend.
BIDDS is down this road on right side, just after petrol station and hardware store on same side.

The last Lifeline I'd attended was at the end of October 2014, I couldn't make the one just before Christmas. Therefore I was anticipating a really good allnight session of the rarer side of our music. And I was not disappointed.

John McClure had kindly offered me a lift from Kettering, so I made sure I got there before 7 pm, he had said he wanted to get there on time. After picking up friends Irish and Kerry, we set off and made extremely good time, in fact we arrived before the 9 pm start. But the car park was already busy, there were guide lines painted so no excuse for bad parking, and when we got in to Bidds the music was playing and there were quite a few people already in. Thank you to John for the lift.

After buying a round of drinks for my friends I found a place to leave my coat and bag, changed my shoes and was ready to go. The first hour's DJ was Nick Stevenson who played a nice set of mainly medium tempo tunes, and as usual most were not known by me. One in particular stood out, a medium tempo tune with a funky guitar playing in the background and a trombone solo near the end, does anyone recognise it?

Andy Dyson was on next for 45 minutes, again plenty of tunes I didn't recognise, but the dance floor began to fill. Clarence Townsend's I Found A Love was one he played that I recognised immediately and also Packing Up by Damon Fox.

Next up was Cliff Steele who mixed the styles up very nicely, ranging from a fairly recent release, Gregory Porter's 1960 What, through some very nice Latin, not the usual ones you hear, to some straightforward Northern Soul, Ooh Boy by the Adorables, one I'd requested. Among others played were When No One Cares and Too Late.

Mick H was next doing a 45 minute set, both he and Andy were on again later. Included in his set was the Zodiacs' Ruff Nut, nice funky tune.

Following Mick was Soul Sam who played a set also mixing the genres. From Modern Soul records like Willie Dale's Let Your Light Shine to funky tunes (Funk On was one if my memory is correct) to slower tunes like Gangster Boy and even some Northern, my request for the Poets. It's good to see Sam going strong, an inspiration to all on the soul scene I think.

Then it was time for the guest DJ, this time it was Butch, making a return to Lifeline. He started off with one of his current favourites, I always think of it as a soul bossa nova, think it's called Simply, but it is a big dance floor filler. He then played a mixture of some of his well known and current “biggies” (Salvation, Shake Cherri, It's All Over (Baby), The Hurting Is Over, Eye For An Eye, Gotta Find A New Love, Spend Some Time, the Mighty Lovers cover up and his Chuck Jackson cover up, the latter at my request, the Vessie Simmons cover up and others) plus some I didn't recognise. One he played after the Chuck Jackson was the Temptones' That's When You Know You're In Love, at least I think it was that one. He ended with his Little Caesar cover up. No need to state that the dance floor was busy during his set.

Then it was Andy's second set, he included Sir Joe's Nobody Beats My Love and Jimmy Sherman's My Heart's Wide Open (Crazy Baby), the latter at my request.

At this point I'd better say that I'd nobbled the DJs with requests as it is my birthday this week. A bit cheeky I think, now feel embarrassed. Thanks to all of them, I now vow not to request any of the ones I asked for tonight again. Mick H was unable to oblige, he thought he had the record with him but found it wasn't in his record box, not to worry.

Mick followed Andy for his final 45 minutes and started off with Foreign Blue Renaissance's Wanting You and played a mainly 60s set. He played the classic Love Slipped Through My Fingers by Sam Williams with that very distinctive piano intro and also included the sublime Your Love Is Everything by Sandy Golden, one of my favourites.

Chalky did the final hour as usual, mixing tempos nicely. Among the records he played were Because I Love You by Willie Hightower, an Ad Libs track (was it Nothing Worse Than Being Alone?) and my request for Kae Williams' Our Love Is Dying, which he played just before our party left at about 5.35.

As usual there were people from all over the UK and a lady, Sam, from Australia. One of the pleasures of Lifeline is catching up with friends and last night was no exception. One of my friends Eddie Hubbard has been baking cakes recently and he bought me up a slice of lemon drizzle cake, it was delicious. I will return the compliment at the April 100 Club. Perhaps we could have a table selling sandwiches and cakes or perhaps not. I had promised a sandwich to Eddy but ate them on the train to Kettering, I was hungry, sorry. Suffice to say it was really good to see so many of my friends there, a group of people who are interested in the rarer side of soul music.

I didn't go into the Pow Wow R&B room, I was just having such a good time in Lifeline, but a friend who spent a lot of time in there said how good it was, and in the past when I've popped in there I've always enjoyed the music.

It was Lifeline's 11th anniversary, now that is good going. I don't know the longevity of most clubs, only the 100 Club really. But 11 years is good, especially when we have to face the fact that rare soul is a small section of the whole soul scene, a minority taste. Well done you guys, thank you! Keep up the good work, it is appreciated.

Well done to all the Lifeline/Pow Wow team for putting a quality night together.

Certainly worth the trip down the M1 & would travel further for night's like last night

Bumped into loads of faces I've not seen for ages (Note to self I must get out more :wicked:) & even put a few faces to some Soul Source members.Only down side to that was I spent too much time talking bollocks to old mates instead of listening more intently to the quality stuff been played........I promise I'll try harder next time

Look forward to April so we can do it all again

Cheers

Happy Birthday Life-line - congratulations for managing to balance on that ‘Northern Soul Tight Rope Of Creativity’ for 11 years.

Thanks to Kimbo, Lisa, and Manus for my ‘Northern Soul Adventure’……A ‘Snap Shot’, (Manus)….”I used to enjoy The Old Grey Whistle Test”…..Pause….. (I could not ‘for the life of me’ see the connection to the ‘in depth’ discussion we were having……”What!?...Did you say you used to enjoy The Old Grey Whistle Test?!”…….”No!, I said this was big at The Torch!”……”Oh!...I tell you what, shall we move a sensible distance away from the loud speaker?”……..”What?!”….etc……It was like a Two Ronnies Sketch.

‘Keep on keeping on’ an all that.

All the best,

Len

P.s - A bit too much Mid-tempo for my liking, but others seemed to be well into it he he :D

I don't know that I was ready for the cold weather in Stoke after having a winter on the Costa del Sol, but it felt good to be amongst fellow soulies, old and new friends.  Came back to 22C and bright sunshine, blissful, though I do miss the music and conversation.  It was good to catch up with Kev Moore and Chad, and to meet a few of the folks from off here.  Like Mary Poppins I'll not leave it so long until next time, though I'll not fly in on a parasol.
