Ad-Lib Club "Back to the Roots" Details

The Ad-Lib Club is a small, intimate cellar-bar 50s/60s R&B Soul club bringing the early sounds that evolved into the first mod/r&b/soul underground allnighter scene. The djs spin rare/underplayed tracks from our music policy which has the cut off year of 1966.Expect to hear Early r&b,early soul,Jamaican r&b,Jamaican Ska,Doowop,Hammond grooves,British artists influenced by black r&b.All this played out in an authentic 1823 cellar bar with thick stone walls under a manor house once belonging to Lord Beaumont.A warren of windowless underground rooms.Main room decks and lounge chill-out decks. We have to sell tickets for our events as they are always "packers" with the majority of support coming great distances. This ensures entry. We are an early start venue (due to the license for the venue)with the first djs on in both rooms at 7 o'clock (doors open 6.45 )and then through until 12.15 am.This venue is the most authentic you will find and is a true reflection of the ORIGINAL 50s/60s r&b CLUB SCENE.

We have played host to many of the scenes top UK djs and this night is no exception. We have Bill Kealy (For Dancers Only,Wexford,Ireland).Nick Porter (The Olde Spa,Derby) and Kev Kuss (Sheffield). Our resident djs are all in-demand spinners theirselves .Martin Greene,Trevor Quincey,Allan Swires,Christian Scott,Andrew and Eileen Vasey.Completing tonights line-up is Ben Sutton (Select Sounds).

Tickets are £4 each available now (At the time of writing half have been sold already).Contact 07989 717 043 or adlibsoul@yahoo.co.uk More information on our Facebook Group page https://www.facebook.com/groups/190264310986981/

Also on this night we have been invited to host a book launch for Sawdust Caesars: Original Mod Voices where interested parties can meet and discuss the book with author Tony Beesley.

I’ve been collecting 45's for about 30 years. In the beginning it was mainly 60's mod bands but that soon moved on to sixties soul and Motown.More recently, the last 10/15 years or so I have more or less only been collecting 50's And 60's R&B... I started my first club in 1996 and since then have always been involved with some club.My current club is called 'For Dancers Only' based in Dublin, Ireland and we are now into our 9th year...I have dj'd at more or less all the mod and soul clubs in Ireland over the years and play regularly in the UK and in Europe, some highlights recently include Euroyeye in Gijon, the Boiler Club in Barcelona, Les Minets in Paris, Soulful Torino in Turin, Mojoworking in San Sebastian, The Forum Club in Madrid, Crossfire and RNB123 in London and The Hideaway Club in Manchester....

I'm really looking forward to coming to The Ad-Lib Club and playing in your fantastic looking venue ,wish it was this weekend

Some current plays -

Johnny West - Tears Baby

Billy Emerson - I'll Get You Too

Big Tiny Kennedy - Country Boy

Bob Kelly - Shes My Baby

Ercel Jones - Thats My Man

Walter Moore - My Girl

Otis Blackwell - Let The Daddy Hold You

Walter Spriggs - I Pawned Everything

Johnny Preston - I've Got My Eyes On You

Mary Ann Fisher -Put On Your Shoes

First of all i'm just a collector and not a DJ ! This great music snared me when i was about 14 like most people who grew up in the 60's it was the whole package Mods, scooters style and of course music that was the attraction.I got took to the Leicester Nite Owl when i was 14 or so and just got hooked.Other places were the Il Rondo and numerous back rooms in pubs and even our youth club where a certain Micky Bang Bang introduced us to underground soul (no such thing as "northern soul" in those days)By the time i started work the Mod scene was dying out and it was about !970 when a crowd of us went to the Wheel and the music seemed to be more uptempo and "different".The days of soul, ska,RnB,beat, blues and white RnB all on the same playlist seemed to be over. Record prices and a young family to keep meant my record collection went along with being part of this new scene apart from the odd trip to the Engine at coalville. My music interest then turned to blues.

During the late 80's Sharon and I started getting back into the music albeit just local events, but we started getting disalusioned as they seemed to be Wigan revival nights.Much later we began to hear records that reflected the original scene (although i never heard them in the 60's ?)Trips to The Hideaway and especially Colsterworth got us hooked again.

I've DJ'd at Notts alnighter,Loughborough alnighter,Quorn Soul Club,Skegness Weekender and of course the Spa.Thankfully there are a number of venues true to what this underground scene was about;Adlib,Rhythm Shack,Dearne Playhouse,King Bee etc.

My playlist at the Spa has included Blues,Brit RnB,Beat,Popcorn etc hopefully i can please someone ?

Regards nik

I was born and raised in Sheffield. My first interest in soul music was in the early sixties listening to sounds of Otis Redding, Wilson Picket, Sam Cook and The Drifters. In my later school years Motown was also an influence. I came across 'Northern Soul' in 1972 at Nether edge hall, a club in Sheffield. I then went on to places like Heartbeat (later known as Samanthas) in Sheffield, Wigan Casino and most other places that were running in the seventies. In the mid eighties I got married had two children and joined the Army so my passion for Soul music was more or less put on hold. On leaving the Army in the late nineties I rediscovered the 'Northern Soul' scene and very soon started going to R'n'B venues. I am passionate about all styles of Soul music particularly Doo Wop. I love playing rockin' R'nB' with a bit of uptempo Doo Wop or anything else that fits the bill. See you all at the next Ad Lib. Kev Kus

Hi ,these are the proposed dj set times for the October 11th Ad-Lib night..Just a reminder of our music policy.Early soul,R&B,Jamaican r&b/ska,Doowop,Hammond grooves.British r&b influences on the scene are played out in a special spot in the chill-out lounge.(this time by Nick Porter). The chill-out lounge we like to keep to the slower tunes of our music policy(unless it's Jamaican , Doowop,or British influences  which djs are all invited to play as they don't usually  feature heavily as a rule in the main room). This is so  that the 2 rooms don't compete against each other. The main room is always full-on with our music policy which has a cut off year of 1966 (inclusive of ).Hope it all makes sense !!!!!!

Lounge:
Howie "Howzer"Houghton  7 -  8
Allan Swires/Christian Scott  8  -  9
BILL KEALY  9  -  9.45
NICK PORTER   9.45  -    10.30
KEV KUSS  10,30  -  11,15
Martin Greene/Trevor Quincey  11.15  -  Finish

Main Room:
Martin Greene/Trevor Quincey 7  -  8.30
Andrew Vasey  8.30  -  9.15
KEV  KUSS   9,15  -  10,15
BILL KEALY  10,15  -  11,15
Allan Swires/Christian Scott  11,15 to Finish.

Overwhelming response for tickets for this night.Sold out early and a waiting list for returns. We can't fill the demand for tickets but we can advise folk to buy tickets for our events as early as possible to avoid disappointment. An example being over 50 tickets gone already for the Nov 22nd event.Ideally we would like everyone to experience the unique atmosphere of an Ad-Lib night just once but the venue can only hold so many people so it has to be first-come-first-served.Safe journey to all of you coming to Lincoln for another "Back to the Roots" Ad-Lib night.STYLE-CULT-HISTORY.

Well what another fantastic night in Lincoln, a total sell out with atmosphere and music to die for.

Great to see Bill Kealy and Kev Kus behind the decks with a rammed dance floor.

And always a very warm welcome from Glenn and his crew.

Brav
