SOMEWHERE DOWN THE LINE
A brand new night of rare & Soulful sounds played from original vinyl, with special guest NEAL BIRNIE and residents DEAN ATKINS & JONNY CRAWSHAW
Saturday 8th November, 9pm-2am, Free
The Railway Tavern, Tulse Hill
NEAL BIRNIE (Sounds of the Universe / NTS Radio)
Neal Birnie is one of the familiar faces behind the counter at The Sounds of the Universe record shop in Soho. He is an avid collector of all genres spanning soul, funk, jazz, reggae, disco and house. Also known as Everything Is Everything, this talented DJ - still at the tender age of 26 - can be found spinning at festivals, clubs and weekenders in and around Europe, as well as holding down a monthly show on NTS radio.
DEAN ATKINS (Soul Jazz Records / 100% Dynamite!)
Known to his friends as Dean The Mod, Dean Atkins has travelled much of Europe DJing as part of the Soul Jazz Records Sound System. Whilst famed for their legendary Reggae night 100% Dynamite!, Soul Jazz Records refuses to be pigeon-holed as a label releasing highly regarded compilations and original material from genres as diverse as Baille Funk, Electro, Latin, Boogaloo, Hip Hop, Dubstep and of course Funk, Soul, Jazz and Reggae. It is these latter genres to which Dean Atkins is most closely associated in his solo outings, so you can expect only the choicest cuts of Soul, the rawest R&B and the downright funkiest of Funk served up in Dean’s inimitable style.
JONNY CRAWSHAW (Give It Some! Edinburgh / Soul Provision, York)
Jonny made his name in Scotland under the moniker DJRed6 where he ran a number of successful nights at Edinburgh’s legendary Bongo Club; notably his funk club, “Give It Some!”, the Scottish arm of Soul Jazz Record’s long-running Reggae session “100% Dynamite!” and “Solid Steel” on behalf of Ninja Tune. He returned to his home town of York with his young family in 2009 where he runs the highly regarded “Soul Provision”, but regularly travels the country with his prized box of 45s. He is known for his eclectic, dancefloor friendly sets covering all bases from Funk, Soul, R&B & Jazz, through into Rocksteady Reggae and beyond.
