Hi Frank,

The CCS Christmas special has got to be one of the best (if not the best) events in the Soul Calendar, at this stage i'm not sure what the team have planed but rest assured you won't be disappointed.

I can confirm that there will be a wall to wall DJ line up so the phrase "Across The Board" will really mean that the CCS musical palette is a very broad one and is sure to please and as you all know all on genuine original vinyl (not and Outta Sight look-a-like in the building!)

In the meantime Mr or should i say Monsieur Wood is back from his French adventure but i think all the gaelic influences my have been just a little too much for him.

More on Mademoiselle T to come.....ooh la la!

Avez-Vous any Northern Soul records s'il vous play?

Hi Steve,

Sean took me up stairs last Saturday & outlined all his plans for the room. If all goes well it's gonna look great when it's done, more or less the same amount of seating but a bigger dance floor. I'm sure the room 'll look more spacious too.

Nice one Steve, catch you soon Pal, Woody

Double posted by mistake so out of sinc a little, i'm now watching the George Gently Northern Soul episode on TV but the researcher for the programes only knowledge of Northern Soul must be from an "Up All Night" cd.... Ten mins into it and I'm on to my fourth mistake all ready.

This has to be the club event of the year but don't just take my word for it just ask anyone who has been to any previous CCS Christmas bash and let them tell you if you're going to do just one soul event over the festive period make it this one.

Heres a couple of teasers for you all

If there was one piece of 7" vinyl you would love to own what would it be ?

what oldie that you never hear today , would you like to see activated ?

cheers

Evening Frank,,

Not really one piece of vinyl as such I would like to own but I wish I would have bought the records I passed over when I had the chance to buy them as being way too slow I must have turned down dozens of tracks as not being to the 100mph standard Tony Middleton's "To The Ends Of The Earth" on an MGM demo disc and "Paris Blues" on British (it was a red copy) Polydor and the collections I said no to that I could have bought for what would seem like pennies now when the Northern Soul scene went into a free fall decline in the early 80's but "if you then what you now" as the saying goes....oh and so many British issues just because I wanted the original American release!

Manchester-Wheelers_Cover_L_zps82a7ba6b.

Now as for reactivating oldies, once again not one sound in particular but I'm saying this so come and get me "some of the songs that got myself and perhaps thousands of other into the music in the first place" that are now deemed as works of Satan (these tend to be so many "Blue Eyed Soul" records" but I can remember Brian Hyland's "The Joker Went Wild" being a monster disc and getting spin after spin at a Northern Soul night, "Nine Times Out Of Ten" by Muriel Day being huge and the infamous "Footsee" causing mini stampedes to get on the dance floor and at one event i was attending a well respected Northern Soul DJ being one record away form being booed of stage for not playing as it's often called "Youth Club Soul" but that was then and this is now, yet at the right event a selection of "Youth Club Soul" can set the floor on fire but would you hear "Footsee" get played out I wonder?

**** Please Note I Will Not Be Playing Any Of The Above Mentioned Records On The 27th ****

Hi Frank,

if I could choose any 7" I think it would be "Chasing My Dream All Over Town" by Jenny Wren or "He's Gonna Love Me" by Elkie Brooks, great dancers both & very very rare :shades: .

As for which oldie, it's got to be "Love's The Only Answer" by Kelly Garrett, awesome hundred mile an hour dancer :sweatingbullets:

hi guys

would love an original of Sam Fletchers "id think it over ",its a bit pricey today though and another one I would

like to see in my box is an original Yum Yums , I did get offered one for about £50 in the mid seventies ,which was about

a weeks wages back then ( was an advert in Black Echoes ) , my oldie of choice and on my playlist is Archie Bells " a thousand wonders " great tune and nice n cheap

cheers

Hi fellas,

My suggestion for reactivated oldie is Barbara Lynn's "Take Your Love And Run" i think i'm the only person that gives this soul dancer an occasional outing,

I got one of those Dyson Ball Cleaners for Christmas.
Unfortunately, I misunderstood what it was, which is why I'm now in casualty...

Well as requested lets get down to some of our regular CCS business and kicking of this months CCS Top Ten is this track from the DW collection so without further ado here is our first review and taster of what is on offer on the 27th.

Peter Gordeno " The Makings Of A Man" Parlorphone UK Only Release

Until a few days ago I can honestly say that I had never heard this early 60's track and my knowledge of the singer was more from his part in the Gerry Anderson TV series UFO and his work in television light entertainment.

"The Makings Of A Man" a song from the very talented singer, dancer, choreographer and actor (and the man who taught Tom Jones how to shake a wicked hip) comes this pure helping of British flavoured Popcorn that is really starting to pick up some decent plays, with a polished vocal and such quality backing vocals and and even better musical orchestration from the legend that was John Barry OBE.

"The Makings Of A Man" proves that not all polished Popcorn inspired songs need to be products of Burt Bacharach and Hal David and that us Brits can do a very decent job ourselves, with some sweeping strings a crystal clear vocal this song is a prety as a picture and such a clean production you could eat your dinner of it, with an easy steady dance tempo and song ethic so sharp you could cut yourself on every bar we have some great British post Rock'n'Roll music and up there with any of the other sweet styled popular music ballards of the time and well on par with them and perhaps Gordeno's vocal is indeed better than many of his peers.

Hi everyone from a very cold Steel City.

And although I've not bought into the entire Christmas build-up or indeed the total Christmas vibe I've become in some quarters a "Bar Humbug outcast" but even that being the case I can truly say that the CCS Xmas bash will be a real cracker and I'm well and truly looking forward to being there...well that said lets see what today's selection from our Top Ten has to offer.

9 Gale Garrett "I'll Cry Alone" RCA Victor Records

Okay so this little intro is perhaps a little harder to follow than most Gale Garrett is a a New Zealand born Canadian Singer who's better known in the United States and almost unheard of in the UK, she has some decent musical pedigree winning a Grammy award with the folk song "We'll Sing In The Sunshine" in 1964 as well as acting and writing to add to her list of talents...

A haunting broken hearted love song (also written by her) that once more seems to have a certain special CCS feel to it that can so easily fit in to an Ann Caudell class of torch song, with some bitter sweet lyrics delieverd with a perhaps a slightly masculine Timi Yuro vocal feel to them that are worthy of even more than a second listen but the killer to this tune is the moody Hammond organ and simple drum beat and just playing hard to get is some in the back ground trumpet work, a clear and sharp sound that cuts like a stiletto, in the style of a mean dancer that Mr Wood just keeps on bringing to the CCS turntables.

"I'll Cry Alone" is such a brooding and just a little off centre track but for that something a litttle different this 60's cut is a winner, and surely must be placed far higher in the next CCS Top Ten.

Not at the mega bucks level yet but just so hard to find if you see one get it!

Hi'ya Frank,

I think about the very first night we did & a lot of the early one's sometimes too & some of the records we have'nt played for ages that we played back then. I think we played to about to about fifteen or twenty people, I remember you & Derek, Anthony & Pete & their Wives being there. Me & Sue were worried about the lack of support, but everyone kept saying keep going & look where we are now, just gets better every time. Got some great DJ's lined up for next year old & new.

But for now We're really looking forward to next month, be great to have everybody there, playing a few tunes, having a dance, a drink & a laugh with all our friends.

Gonna be a great party atmosphere & we're gonna give a warm welcome to friends Old & New on Saturday the 27th of next month, see you soon, Woody, Miss T, Frank & Russ  :hatsoff2:

Sorry team once more computer problems, you buy online get a problem and it costs more to fix the problem than you saved in the first palce "you buy cheap you buy twice as my old Gran" used to say!

Okay so as you all can see the "Legendry CCS Christmas Bash" is well and truly getting very geared up and if you can only make one festive event you'll be hard pushed to find a better one and with sounds like these "Across The Board" really does just mean just that.

So what's on the play list, well at number 8 is this old time favorite.

8 Ellie Greenwich "Baby" Red Bird Records, U.S Promo Release Only

From the lady who co-wrote so many 60's classic pop songs with her husband Jeff Barry, Doo Ron Ron,  Be My Baby, Do Wah Diddy Diddy, I Can hear Music, River Deep Mountain High, Leader Of The Pack and dozens more the sheer pedigree of her contribution to popular music is truly immense.

But perhaps not as well know was that Ellie recorded a few songs herself and here is one of them from circa 1966/67 and only released on a US Red Bird promo disc and was even perhaps a song that was to be originally to be recored by the Shangri Las who broke up in mid 66 and maybe the record company just tried their luck but on this occasion it just didn't make any chart impact and fell into the twillight world of Northern Soul records that gain a massive cult following after getting re-discovered.

With a sweet and simple girl style vocal from Ellie Greenwich, that has some even more simple harmonising vocals accompanying it that just blend so well never over stepping the mark but delievering a cool and catchy and never once overdone mid tempo dancer.

"Baby" has no huge production values (you wonder what Phil Spector would have done with the song given half a chance) but the simplicity is one of the songs main strengths, with lots of whooping backing vocals that hide just under the surface add to this a thumping dance beat and you can see why this track has been somewhat an on and off favorite on the Soul scene for many years, just as a foot note I bought my copy for the grand sum of 50p (at the very most) from an old swop shop across from the Kelvin Flats in Sheffield, today you'll be lucky to get one for less than £100 and probably a lot more a slower tempo that is perhaps far more at home today than it ever was. Very much a case that less is more

Thought I was fully back online but to cut a long story short, the back up computer has contracted a 08c3a902-0d67-4c88-abe6-83ab69dcf424_zps

"Jamie's 15 Minute Meals" website you've a got to answer for

!d1a3e7bf-826e-432e-9598-98c0e5bab807_zps an image from a safe medical internet site

So with out any more beating about the bush here's tonights selection from the chart and we're straight in with this months number 7

The Four Tops "Since You've Been Gone" Motown Records USA, Tamla Motown Records UK

From the pens of the legendary song writing team of Holland, Dozier and Holland come this pounding up-tempo dancer from 1966, originally the (if you can believe it) "B" side to "Standing In The Shadows Of Love" a massive slice of pure Detroit that surely must have been a strong contender for a single release on it's own merit but once more this seems to highlight the fact that the Motown Record Corporation had such a wealth of quality material in abudence that they could relegate such great tunes to "B" sides.

"Since You've Been Gone" kicks straight into action from the very first beat, the quintessential "Motown" feel is very apparent with a very much par for the course musical treatment that not just say's Motown but shouts it with of brass and ample strings and somewhere there's is a fair helping of percussion but I seem only to be abel to distinguish the classy xylophone (or is it tubular bells) and with a great pounding drum beat and solo tennor sax break we have a record that is as good a dancer as you can get on the entire label and at bargin basement price and adding the cherry to the cake a power packed Levi Stubbs vocal, a top tune make no doubt about that at any price and coming from what many people might argue is the cream of the Motown record labels output the "500 Series"

Price might have indeed held "Since You've Been Gone" back from being not just a big record but an huge one in the most basic of terms "it's just too cheap" would an £150 price tag make the record sound any better....of course not! but as we know that essential rarity in all things "Northern" is a very desireable commodity, a big song for not a lot of money.

Well back to the CCS Top Ten and as Woody says,

Well said Cpt Woody, i know apart from the original vinyl clause the CCS music policy will quite happily have a £600 record sat along side of a £6 one it's the quality that counts and not the price tag ****

**** Both Woody and Frank have great original vinyl records in their collections and many discs well over four figures! ****

The Chi-Lites "She's Mine" Blue Rock Records,

From the vast discography of the Chi-lites come this Doo-Wop laced and maybe to many a fair helping of a Motown influenced soul on the Blue Rock Label an of shoot from the parent company Mercury and strangely the label never released  "Blues" or any form of "Rock" records this particlar track comes from 1965 and featuring both Eugene Record on lead vocal as well as writing the song just as a point of interest Eugene Record was also the groups main song writer and wrote the "A"side to this disc as well the far slower but quite nice "Never No More"

With the well polished harmonies of this Chicargo based four piece you can hear on "She's Mine" you sometimes have to wonder why the Chi-lite had to wait until the 1970's to find greater comercial fame with such songs as "Have You Seen Her" and "Homely Girl" but that aside from that here we have a nicely paced soul stepper that is yet another record to once more sit better with today's dancers than perhaps it did a few years ago.

A cool and very tight vocal treatment with a no frills tambourine influenced beat that although simple in it's delievery still manages to have that certain foot moving potential a steady musical production that leave most of the hard work to the boys doing the singing but a nice play that might be sometimes a little forgotten but a soulful spin never the less, if you're in the market for a copy the demo released version looks to be the most common and standard issue copies of the 45' appear to be far harder to find prices for the demo seem to be around the £125+ mark and issues (if you can find one) quite a bit more but a nice song that has made a welcome entry into our top ten.

Well a very good evening everyone,

and keeping in with the festive theme have you ever wondered where the tradition of putting a fairy on top of the Christmas tree came from?

Well here the reason folks!

9iRbddLie_zpsfd1293ee.png

The Angel On Top Of The Tree Tradition

One Christmas, Father Christmas was having a really bad day. The local elves union was up in arms over their contract and were threatening a full walk-out. Mrs.Christmas was really mad that Father Christmas was never around to appreciate all of the hard work she had been doing around the house and kept telling him.

So Father Christmas decided he needed to leave the toy workshop and go stright home, sit in front of a fire and relax. When he got home the fire was out, the house was freezing, Mrs Christmas had gone to her Yoga class and not cooked an evening meal, Little Miss Christmas and the Christmas twins were complete little sods and wouldn't let up for a single minute, he had drunk the last of the brandy and forgot to replace,  it then, there was a knock on the door. It was Rudolph. He said the reindeer were sick and tired of poor old Father Christmas not upgrading to the new lightweight sliegh and they were joining the elves walk-out. Father Christmas slammed the door and threatend.......

"The next person who knocks on that door is gonna get it!"

At that time, there was a knock on the door. so Father Christmas flung the door open and there stood a tiny little angel. The angel had been searching for the perfect Christmas tree for their house all day long, until she found the perfect one. The little angel asked, "Father Christmas, I was wondering where you would like me to stick this tree?"

And that is the
story of how the angel on top of the tree tradition began.

Remember kids it doesn't matter whether you've been naughty or nice, everyone is welcome, so for a top night of great Soul music and much much more you need to get along to the CCS Christmas party on the 27th December....

Yes Russ , there was the usual "sprouts " war in our local Tesco , I blame jamies 15 minute xmas dinners !! . I did pop

into Iceland ( the store ) and did not spot Peter Andre , which confirms one thing " peter doesn't shop at Iceland " .

Anyway the madness of xmas shopping begins and not at my local petrol station either , but really looking forward

to seeing as many of you at the CCS Christmas party on the 27th

Hi Frank,

love the phrase "Sprout wars" xmassprouts_zps9b225a22.gif and any supermarket surely must be avoided at any cost if you can...... people it's a jungle out there!

Well here's another christmas story before we get on with CCS business

A mafioso’s son sits at his desk writing a Christmas list to Jesus, he first writes, MafiaChild_Mcitruscom_zps6b321f4f.jpg

Dear baby Jesus, I have been a good boy the whole year, so I want a new…'

He looks at it, then crumples it up into a ball and throws it away. He gets out a new piece of paper and writes again,

‘Dear baby Jesus, I have been a good boy for most of the year, so I want a new…’

He again looks at it with disgust and throws it away. He then gets an idea. He goes into his mother’s room, takes a statue of the Virgin Mary, puts it in the closet, and locks the door, he then takes another piece of paper and writes,

Dear baby Jesus. If you ever want to see your mother again…’

At number 5 on this months CCS Top Ten is,

Smokey Robinson And The Miracles "If You Can Want" Tamla Records USA, Tamla Motown UK

I know Woody has been giving this tune a fair amount of attention of late and is to a great extent is somewhat of an unheard of or very under played item from the Hitsville record stable but is trulely pure Smokey Robinson And The Miracles from the very start to finish.

From 1968 and bang in mist of Motown' period of chart dominance is this composition from one William "Smokey " Robinson and co-produced by him as well.

Very much and easy on the ear and feet and a just over easy dancer, with simple production vaues for a Motown record of the period that lacks the full studio orchestra but for a pleasent change just has a constant no frills saxophone and accopanying (i'm saying Bongo drums and not Conga) pounding a beat thought the entire record, add to this a pretty clean and easy Smokey Robinson vocal aided by some well in the background harmonising vocals by the Miracles and this simple cut takes on another dimension,

And although "If You Can Want" is so very simple in its delivery and yet somehow keeps everything on an almost shoestring production this simplicity is far more of a strengh than a weekness and yet the out and out catchiness of the tune is there from the very first listen and perhaps is the reason why "If You Can Want" is starting to really pick up plays and the dance floor has come to second this.

Played it myself a copuple of times at Our Yorshire Venue on a U K issue, then a couple of weeks ago I was looking at some "Smokey Robinson" stuff on ebay & saw a black & white U S Tamala demo, buy it now $15.00 plus postage, "result", oh joy.......

Evening fellas,

My appologies Frank i thought it was Woody who had first reactivated "If You Can Want" and not your good self (i found i had this as a "B" side to another Smokey Robinson And The Miracles track on the Motown Yesteryear label and once more proving that good doesn't alwas mean expensive.

Three blokes pass away on Christmas Eve and are met by St. Peter.

St. Peter says, "In honor of the season, you must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas."

The first man fumbles through his pockets and pulls out two lighters. He holds them up proudly and flicks them on.

"What do they symbolize?" asks St. Peter.

"They're candles!"

"Ah! You may pass through the Pearly Gates."

The second man fumbles through his pockets and pulls out a couple sets of keys. He holds them up proudly and shakes them.

"What do they symbolize?" inquires St. Peter.

"They're bells!"

"Ah! You may pass through the pearly gates!"

The third man fumbles desperately through his pockets, finally pulling out a skimpy pair of silky woman's panties. He holds them up proudly.

Puzzled, St. Peter asks, "What do they symbolize?"

"They're Carol's!" 50bbe023a92f2_280422n_zpse0bb7ace.jpg

Stright into this months CCS Top Ten at number 4 is

Deanna Shenderey "Comin' Home Baby" Decca Records UK release only

Okay so we all know the song a Northern staple by the man they called "The Singing Frog" Mel Torme and a host of other versions from garage to Latin beat and many others in between even Michael Buble has tried his hand at it and the other verson you might tend to hear is the rather decent 1966 take by Frances Faye or perhaps Dee Dee Sharp's rendition of the track but i hadn't heard this particular one before it was played out at The Mexbrough "Corner Pocket" to a fantastic dance floor reception.

With some sexy saxophone from the very start of this Mod inspired dancer add to this a fair helping of Hammond Organ and a simple vocal and production by Deanna Shendery but still leaving the integral workings of the song intact and you can see why DW is giving this tune a fair amount of deck time and making a very pleasent change from the more common versions, a great home grown take on this Mod favourite with just enough funky organ to make you wish you could still fit in those slim cut Italian trousers you once had.

Very 60's in feel and production and the Jazz tint is reinforced by the songs beating stick work, all i can say is just wait for this one to go big and the signs are it will.... the hard part is finding a copy as people in the know have popped this one on one side.

Classy with cool in abudence, finger clicking is compulsory.

Hey Miss T, your video skills just seem to get better all the time and a great sound track as well!

47e7fd3c-e2d6-4916-9c7a-6b4dd68cbcaf_zps

Well here's the last of the new entries on this months CCS Top Ten and it's another new comer to the chart............at number 3 here's

The Rosebuds "Say You'll Be Mine" Tower Records

Released on the newly formed Tower Record label an off shot of the parent company Capitial Records (and the name Tower coming from Thee Capital "Tower Building located on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles) and having very much an early Detroit style sound The Rosebuds "Say You'll Be Mine" would seem very much of a Big D production but you'd be wrong the song and entire musical set-up is non of that and indeed hails from the sunny climbs of California.

Now as for The Rosebuds i'm sorry to say that information on them is very scarce indeed and at some point quite confusing or even contradictory but (her goes) they were a three/four piece female vocal harmony group from Brooklyn, New York who did a couple of singles then melted into the mists of long lost soul artists..but enough of that.

This mid-tempo dancer beats along for a good 2:48 and for the time is pretty long when many other records of the period were far less than this, with it's punchy beat and honky tonk piano intro this simple cut has been there or there about for many a year or two, and perhaps is to be another reactivated disc that seems once more to have found favour with today's dancers more than ever and perhaps this is purely down to the more simply just over easy stepper pace the record has.

With a very understated vocals that might hint at the girls ages (they sound to be only in their teens) but this is well in keeping with the overall song yet the track really comes to life with a great and catchy chorus where this tune does go up a notch or two and with the addition of some hard brass in the background that drives the song along in a very Northern manner, this no frills cut from 1964 might be another track that has had quite a wait to become somewhat of a belated hit.

When you want your own copy of Ann Caudell's "Longing For You" to play at The City Center Christmas party, extreme measures might need to be taken.
