Missed the last two or three for various reasons so was very much looking forward to last night especially with the return of Andy Rix.

With so much on, not just around the country but locally to Grumpy I was expecting numbers to be down.  But up on arrival we were greeted to a half full room and with more arriving at regular intervals the place was soon full.

Musically Grumpy is right up my street.  The residents complement each other and the guests and with the added bonus of Andy Rix making a welcome return to the decks I doubt you would hear a better nights music anywhere else.  Every record a dancer  and a very receptive up for it crowd.  Like Phil says I hope Andy doesn't leave it for another ten years as he still has plenty to offer this scene , two great sets and in these days of bland unimaginative sets it would be such a shame to lose someone of this calibre completely.  Andy played the Mello Souls, I said to Carl that I didn't know Andy had this?  Carl went to investigate and came back saying he doesn't have one.....he has three f******  That was a good trip Andy said to me when I went and had a look at them side by side.....b*****d   As I said it was nice to see Andy back the ovation he received at the end of his second set showed that everyone thought the same.  Carl is another Dj criminally under used by today's scene and his box must be the envy of most....he has everything, from the classics to holy grails, oldies to newies and Carl knows just what is need to keep the floor busy.  Dave, Joan and Phil are no slouch's either with what they have in the boxes and all three can hold there own with most out there.  All in all a great nights music.

The promoters Joan and Phil, ably assisted by Dave and Lousie with the added support of Carl and Andy can be well chuffed with last night.  Everyone looked happy, sound system fantastic which did the records played justice.  Great to see so many old faces and a few new ones as well.  Look forward to the next one

Having just got in and unpacked all the sound gear thought I'd do a quick write-up before heading off to bed for a couple of hours ... ... I know I help promote it so if it's bad form for me to 'review' it I apologise profusely and encourage anyone and everyone who went to give this the mother of all kickings if I've donned the rose tinted specs ...

It just felt a bit special last night. First, there was a really good crowd in; the place began to fill-up early on and was absolutely buzzing by 10pm. As always, there were Grumpy virgins and regulars alike, some of whom made a massive effort to get there. Banksie et all made for a good record bar as always and, overall, I was struck by how many people said the night felt "like it used to." Absolutely brilliant, job done

We tried a new amp last night too (top man Bob T) and a number of people commented on how good the set-up sounded. From our point of view everything matters but the sound above pretty much anything else, for obvious reasons. It's great when folk notice and take the time to say so thanks for that. (On balance, we recognise that the floor could do with another buff; it's maybe 50% better than it was and not bloody awful but we want it absolutely spot on so, having had one go already, rest assured we'll chase that up again for future bashes).

Again, I'm biased I know but I'm struggling to think of a night I've been to in recent memory when the music was as consistently top drawer as it was last night. (Just MHO of course so do pan it here if you thought it was bobbins and my ears are painted on). Everything was in the mix: exclusives, high quality 'oldies', a bit of top notch crossover and the usual clutch of ten quid crackers. Absolutely loved it and it kinda felt like what we've always aimed for just came to fruition.

Joan, Dave Welding and Carl Fortnum all know what they're doing behind a set of decks of course as they've been at it for years; it shows though and I'm always  a bit in awe of how seamlessly they blend things together. Last night just underlined for me how lucky we are to have em as residents.

Andy Rix was our guest last night and we make no secret of the fact that he's always been a bit of a legend where we're concerned. Andy hadn't played at a northern do for some ten years before last night which must've made it a bit of a tester, even for him.

All I can say Andy is that I hope you realise now just how highly thought of you still are and how much you've been missed; I honestly can't remember when I last saw EVERYONE in a room clap at the end of a set. Quite right too; incredible records, delivered consumately by a lovely fella - little things like turning up early say it all. Proper! We're SO glad we persevered with our efforts to get you to come and do it; thanks again mate - don't leave it another ten will you!

So, thanks to your continued, sterling support, it's onwards and upwards for Grumpy Soul into 2016. Before that though a certain small person from Preston has a big old birthday to celebrate between Christmas and the new year and, having checked with the club yesterday, we've decided to celebrate it Grumpy stylee.

That promises to be a really special night and, naturally enough given who it is, I'm fully expecting the place to be absolutely rammed and rocking. We'll post full details shortly in Events.

Cheers

Phil

ps. Lou you're a star (and a bit scary )

Thanks everyone for the great feedback but more importantly for your continued support and complete and utter up-for-itness. The whole ethos behind Grumpy is quality music all night and I hope we achieve that.

At the risk of this turning into an Oscar speech I have to say what a privilege it was to be there on Saturday night. People reading these look backs who weren't there will never understand what an amazing and unique night they missed.

So thanks as always to all the DJs, Lou and to Andy for agreeing to do it (not sure if he just said yes to get us to stop pestering him) but he was unbelievable. Three Mello Souls ffs, nearly fell off the stage when he showed me at the start of his first set on the promise I wouldn't say anything as it was a surprise for later lol. Was so proud of the ovation he was given at the end, undeniably deserved and shows what a good lot you all are.

Apologies if I've gone on a bit, hope to see you all in December x

I make no bones about it - Grumpy Soul suits me down to the ground. I love the approach to music, and the people behind it, so they'd have to go some for me not have a great night. But Saturday felt like a real treat - from walking through the door to the time I was driving back up the M6 - was treated to the best single night of music I think I've experienced. And as brilliant as the music was, there was something else - the people, and their appreciation of what was going on - something seemed to have clicked for lots of people in there. Very Special. Thank you.

Its Thursday ffs and I'm still beaming from ear to ear

How bloody amazing was Grumpy...just bloody wow....still gobsmacked!!...it don't get better!!!

To be fair that sentence doesn't give one of my best nights out for many years enough justice......will fill in some paragraphs when I have the time...that night is deserving of more than a quick passing remark.

Oh what a night, well worth battling through the roadworks on the Runcorn expressway. Top drawer soul music from all the DJ's from four figure rarities, mello souls J D Bryant to £10 classics Spyder Turner "your good enough" all recieved and embraced on the dancefloor with equal enthusiasm. Maybe the best one yet at Grumpy's!!!

Welcome to the Grumpy Soul Runcorn Comments sectiom

This event is now over. Look up now to read the latest reviews of this soul event

Hi guys, spoke to the club and it's all systems go!!

A couple of things - first, and this is brilliant, Andy Rix is our guest for this one.

Pretty sure the last time I saw Andy DJ was at Drunken Monkey and we all know how long ago that was! Everyone is aware of the tunes he has turned up so we are chuffed to bits that he's agreed to join us.

Add to that the usual Grumpy irregulars Carl, Dave and Phil and I'm sure you'll agree it will be one hell of a night. Roll on

Second, the club owner told me that people were smoking inside the club in July (which obviously isn't on) so we ask that those responsible please do not do it again, thanks x

Hi Joan & Phil

Does the clubs no smoking rules rule out the use of indoor fireworks, if so can we share out a packet of sparklers in the smoking shelter. I must say it's been a hell of a long time since I last saw our esteemed guest Brian Rix running around a stage with his trousers around his ankles !!!!

Andy's proper looking forward to it, as are we, can't wait to hear what he's going to treat us to!!

Fortnum's been on, effervescent as usual and can't wait to have more people to vent at. Been practicing his floor work too has the lad, always a treat for the eyes :D

Seriously, with Andy joining the regulars, the music is going to be awesome. He hasn't dj'd anywhere in years and is really up for it so hope loads of you can join us. It's going to be brilliant

All the ducks at the back of the Navy club have been moved into temporary sheltered accommodation so none of them get broken. So I have been reliably informed.
