Performance From A Southern Soul Legend

We are so proud to have Ann Sexton performing at the Wilton.

Ann depicts the roots of black women by illustrating,

With a force of power she sings some soulful songs which include:

"Who's Gonna Love You"

"Color My World Blue"

"Be Serious"

Ann will win your hearts in the way she soulfully

sings the slower tunes, whilst at the same time have

you jumping all over when she ups the tempo.

Wow! What a fantastic night. Watching your old idols can often end in disappointment, artists sometimes past their peak.

NOT with Ms Sexton. A full house experienced a real soul experience with a voice still rich, deep  and with as much range as ever. Ann's performance over two sets was full of energy and love for an appreciative audience. She went through her repertoire with the kind of enthusiasm that laid these tracks to vinyl those 40 or so years ago. A special mention should go to Push, the 8-piece backing band - tight and right on it, delivering the tunes with amazing accuracy and energy.

Ann had the grace to sign records etc and pose for photographs after, all with a big smile.

It was one of those 'I was there nights' and , well, I was there!

Ann … you made a lot of people very happy, come back soon x

I've just written a lengthy review & gosh knows where it went !! so before I start it all over again, I'm doing a test to see if this one saves.

Edit:  result!!!

Aww, it was great to be back in The Wilton after 12 months!!  It's been gone far too long!!!

Was lovely to see so many Wilton regulars, and lots of new faces, support the songstress that is Ann Sexton.  Flippin heck! She was so good!!  Pitch perfect and a lovely humble woman.  Superb performance and I loved that fact that after the performance she waited around to sign everyone's bits & bobs and even took the time to write your name on a scrap piece of paper to ensure she got the spelling correct on your bits & bobs.  Granted, she got mine wrong (it was loud in there) and I'm now known as Aliso (but only to Ann Sexton).

Push were outstanding, as they always are, and I was chuffed to bits that Mick Talbot remembered me from 2 years ago (the restraining order has now been lifted)

Enormous thanks to Dave, Mouse, Val & all the others behind the scenes who put lots of hard work into bringing these great artists to our shores.

Here are my photo's of the night, back to front? even though I loaded them up in the right order. http://www.soul-source.co.uk/soulforum/gallery/album/7914-ann-sexton-the-wilton-141115/

Much love always

Thank You         Thank You          Thank You         Thank You!

Before I thank everyone, I would like to reflect on what happened at last year’s Marvin Smith concert.  Yes, you’re right, sadly he never made it!

After the disappointment felt by everyone when Marvin was taken ill and had to cancel the concert, we felt like calling it a day from doing live acts at the Wilton’s Soulful Sessions.  If we had totally cancelled the event we would have lost a lot of money.

We chose to continue and, thanks to all of you who still attended, you turned the disappointment into a great, successful event, and helped us financially to recover some of our losses.

We would like to thank all the people who attended, including the DJs, who worked for free on the night.  A special thank you to those who refused their refunds, telling us to put the money towards this year’s event, and because of your support, Ann Sexton walked on to the stage on 14th November, 2015, delivering a performance we will never forget.  In simple terms, Ann Sexton would have never graced the stage at the Wilton’s Soulful Sessions without your generosity last year.  Yes, we lost money again on this event, but it was priceless being able to organise an event like this.  Another 30 people through the door would have made all the difference, and we would have covered the costs of staging this event.

I would like to thank everyone who attended on 14th November – people queuing patiently at the door in the rain at 8.15, when we had planned to open at 9pm; with the result that Val and Kath took pity on you all and decided to let everyone in early.

The scene at the door reminded me of the Debbie Taylor Concert in 2013; the people queuing were the same people – many of the most knowledgeable, long-standing fans on the UK soul scene, from all four corners of the country.

When Ann joined the band on stage for rehearsals, and the band hit the intro to the first song, we all held our breath; for any live act promoter, this is a crucial moment.  No need to worry with this lady – Incredible.  Ann sailed through all 13 songs and left us all speechless.  Can it get any better on the night?  Well, from what you all said at the concert and afterwards on social media, yes it did, and more!

 Thank you time:

To Ann Sexton: for being such a fabulous lady to deal with during the build up to the concert, and for the sensational performance delivered on the night; not forgetting the time she spent with you all, patiently signing everything put in front of her, until the early hours after the concert, with a constant SMILE on her face.

To Melvin, Ann’s son, for being such a thoughtful companion to Ann on the flight over, and for being by her side throughout her stay in Yorkshire.

To the Band “PUSH”: they are equally important to a concert as the Artist.  Once again, I would like to thank my friend, Ernie McKone, bass player and musical director, for assembling a group of musicians second to none.  We are so fortunate to have these guys at our concerts. Can’t think what we’d do without them!  A special thank you to our keyboard man, Mick Talbot, who was, again, a part of the band.  Mick and the rest of the band, and the backing vocalists – Noreen and Lorraine - love our music, which shows in the way they magically accompany our artists “so tight and right on it, delivering the tunes with amazing accuracy and energy”, as one guy stated on this thread.

To the Sound Guys:  A fabulous artist, and band, but without a professional sound team and PA equipment, which is the third essential part of a show, we would have been in trouble.  I would like, once again, to thank John & Arran (JSS Audio) for their constant attention to the sound quality throughout the show, which made a great show fantastic.

To the DJs:  What can I say, I was one of them! along with Arthur Fenn and Mike Charlton, a great mix of tunes, something for everyone’s taste, just great soul music.  Thank you for your support.

To The Team:  To Val, the boss, for putting up with my tantrums, (even more now as I’m getting older!!) and skilfully dealing with all financial aspects and ticketing.  To Jenny and Mouse for ticket sales.  To Kath, Stewart and Elyse, and Steve for their assistance on the door.  Not forgetting Tim Brown and Tom at Anglo American, for their willingness to promote the event.

To the Venue Staff:  Thanks for all your support and willingness to provide every request I threw at you:  website use, catering, venue facilities, etc. etc.

To the Fans:  A show like this would be pointless without you.  Ann went home after an experience she will never forget.  She felt loved, and she loved all of you.

What’s next at the Wilton’s Soulful Sessions?

Soul Night, maybe an allnighter, celebrating my 70th birthday, along with a few others, on Saturday 19th March, 2016.  Details to follow.

Soul Night, Saturday, 19th November, 2016.  Negotiations are taking place with our next  Artist – Chuck Bernard  - direct from Chicago. This will be his debut performance in the UK.   We will keep you posted on our progress.

 Thank you.

A Big Thank You - and - Ann Sexton Live At The Wilton

After the disappointment felt by everyone when Marvin Smith was taken ill and had to cancel his concert last November, we felt like calling it a day with regards to live artists at the Wilton’s Soulful Sessions.  We continued with the event and, thanks to all who attended, you turned the disappointment into a great success, and helped us financially to recover some of our losses.

We would like to thank all the people who attended, with a special thank you to those who refused their refunds, telling us to put the money towards next year’s event, and because of your support, we have decided to give it another go.

14th November 2015, is our next soul night, featuring a very special performance from a southern soul legend — ANN SEXTON — supported by our incredible full eight piece band, including background vocalists — PUSH.

Let’s give Ann a welcome she will never forget, with a Wilton capacity crowd that, no doubt, will know more about Ann’s recording career than she can probably remember herself.

Ann’s sets will include deep soul and uptempo classics, something for everyone’s taste.

Tickets will go on sale mid-March — watch the Soul Source events guide and the Wilton’s pages on Facebook for updates.

Looking forward to November.

Ann’s sets will include her well known songs from the 70’s, deep and uptempo classics that she recorded initially for David Lee’s Impel label and later for John Richbourg’s ® Seventy Seven label, something for everyone’s taste.

We have asked Ann to perform something extra special, her very first recording that she cut way back in 1967. She was the featured vocalist on a track cut by Elijah and the Ebonies titled “I Confess”, a great ballad issued on the Gitana label, cut in Ann’s hometown of Greenville, South Carolina. On this release she was featured as Mary Sexton and must have been in her late teens when this recording was released. We are so pleased and privileged that Ann has agreed to perform this song onstage at the Wilton for the very first time in Europe since she recorded the song all those years ago.

To make sure we’ve covered all the bases, Ann will perform her latest 2010 release “Rising Up”, a fantastic uptempo soulful track.

Tickets are now on sale at £20.00 or online at £21.50 at www.wheatsheaf.com/allnighter – watch the Soul Source events guide and the Wilton’s pages on Facebook for updates.

Tickets will be on sale at the Scarborough weekender 27th/28th/29th of March at the Rivelyn Hotel and Soul Essence 10th/11th/12th of April.

Looking forward to November.

Dave and Val.

Latest Update - (7th July 2015)

It’s been a long time since we sent this original email round to all you guys, so we thought it was time to let you know what’s been going on over the past few months. Well, Ann signed the contract some months ago, so tickets went on sale. The response for tickets has been great - we didn’t start selling tickets for last year’s concert until July, but this year we have sold around 100 tickets already, which is fantastic. We have had sales from the length and breadth of the UK.

Ann has recorded some great songs, so the task to decide the song list for the concert has been a tough one, but we have just about completed a list that will included something for everybody’s taste. Ann’s concert will be split into two 30 minute sets, just as we did with Debbie Taylor.

Ann’s set will cover the full spectrum of her career starting in 1967 with “I Confess”, touching on Deep/Midtempo/Uptempo/Funk from the 70’s, and finally Soulful House from 2010.  Ann has agreed the song list and the songs and the keys have been passed on to the band.

Ann’s flights and hotels are now booked, the band’s hotel is also booked. The sound guys and sound equipment for the concert is also finalised. Work permits for Ann will be issued a few weeks before the concert. Well, that sounds like it’s sorted, just about, but just like any project, fine adjustments will be needed along the way to November 14th.

All we need now is for all our Wilton Allnighter guys to get their act together and get their tickets before it’s too late. This email is addressed to most of people who have attended the Wilton Allnighter at some time in its 20 year history, and other people that have attended our recent soul nights and live artist events.

This concert is an event not to be missed and is looking like a sell out night, so don’t leave it to the last minute and be disappointed. Get a ticket now and just sit back and wait for the 14th November. Most people who have already got tickets have also booked in the local hotels, deals are now available for November booking at around £35 per room; these hotels are not massive and soon will be sold out.

Hi Dave

I am not sure why you are suggesting that I need a seat, I am still capable of standing up for the first session, although not sure about the second one!!! I will save one for Martyn who, although slightly younger than me, needs to rest when it gets late. Looking forward to the night.

Quite simply Stunning!. Dave had said how well the rehearsal had gone & boy was he on the money. Ann gave us song after song with such purity & the band Push with the girls were as good as anyone you would ever hear. Once again Dave & Val gifted us all a precious memory .

Up there with the best I've seen, simply brilliant.  As Arthur said the guys in the band and the girls on backing as good a band you will hear, incredibly tight.  It does help when the guy and girls love the music too.  Mick Talbot been there and done it but to see him having a ball was simply brilliant.  Ann though was simply stunning.  She's lost nothing since laying down some of these tracks.  The first time she sang "You Been Gone Too Long" it was like listening to the record vocally, brilliant.  Well done Dave, Val and Mouse.  Look forward to the next one.
