SOUL Session 5

What a night! The Dedicated Soul team Andy, Paula, Keith and myself would like to express our sincerest thanks to Jens and Carl for all their effort's in not only traveling from Sweden, but for their sterling work on the deck's. I know the team and I can truly say with hand on heart, they did the business. It is just such a tragedy that more people weren't there to hear them, unfortunately our usuals who couldn't make it, missed out.

Many thanks goes out to everyone who came to hear a masterclass, they are Mr and Mrs Dug Chant, Mr and Mrs Alan Hutchings, Manus, Mick Smith, the Uckfield set of 5, the lovely Claire Kalvis, Gary Johnson, and my dear dedicated soul friend Sandie and partner Billy, Mr and Mrs Tommy Gunn not forgetting newlyweds Sally and Mike Presswell, along with many more.

As you can see by the photos everyone is having a good time, perhaps some would have liked to hear a bit more Northern, well maybe/probably next time when we have Cliff Steele (Cleethorpes) and Andy Hutchins (Trowbridge). I think it is safe to say that August 1st 2015 SOUL Session truly established it's place on the Soul map, thank you all for making it happen.

For SOUL Session 5, I thought you might like to know a little bit about our two guest's. Flying over for one night only, we are very excited indeed, not only to hear, but to see them as well. Soul music is in the ascendancy in Sweden and Jens & Carl are probably two of the main movers and shakers and represent part of a team that present The Lighthouse and Family Circle weekender in Stockholm. Over the past couple of decades they have worked very hard at bringing Soul music to the attention of an increasing number of Swedish people. In other parts of Europe we have recently had the opportunity to hear them at Soul Essence, Filthy Soul, Soul 4 Real (Bilbao) and recently Jens was doing a spot at “Something Deep Inside” (Barcelona). Jens and Carl like to play quality across the board Soul with a hint of Northern and crossover. Carl stays in the know by working in Stockholm's Record Mania, which we visited when we were there in 2014. They both have impeccable taste and are like us, are Dedicated Soul lovers. I've know the Swedish boys for nearly 15 years, and they are the genuine article. So SOUL Session patron's get ready for something real special, I know we are.

The big question is, are we ready for the Carl and Jens Swedish invasion? The answer is you bet your life we are. With Saturday only 5 day's away thing's are really hotting up no matter the weather, what better way to spend a Saturday night than in the beautiful Sussex countryside listening to some wonderful soul from across the decades. Why not treat yourself, you know you want to.

It's all about Jens and Carl they came, they saw, and they ate breakfast, and in between the toast, egg, bacon, sandwich, music and mayhem ensued. I have already written about our SOUL Session 5 evening, well if your sitting comfortably then I'll begin to describe, blow by blow, the rest of the weekend it was a knockout.

It has to be said: Carl and Jens are two of the nicest people you will ever meet, easy going and with a wonderful sense of humor, needless to say, it was wall to wall laughter, talking, joking and playing records.

Let start from the beginning, 9.15 am we arrived at Gatwick in time to pick the boys up, perfect their/our timing couldn't have been better. None of us had had breakfast so we all decided we had to EAT, no problem we said, there's a nice cafe in Burgess Hill where you can fill your boot's. Stomachs were rumbling a plenty, in fact I thought it was thunder in the distance, but the weather was so fantastic, it couldn't have been, it had to be hunger! For the boy's the full monty and when it turned up, was, I seem to remember the words: “now this is what I call a breakfast”, for me just a bacon sandwich.

Breakfast over by 10.30 and checking-in at the Travelodge not until 3.00 pm, the question was what to do till then, the solution: back to “Woon Towers” for some light banter and play some tunes. Tune-talk-blah-tune-blah-joke-rhubarb..., the conversation went something like “do you know this”? and “have you go that”? We barely had time to fit in a cuppa', not very British I hear you say. Time went by so quickly, and before we knew it, it was check-in time. I drove them to T'lodge then came back home for a bite to eat, and get ready for the evening session.

At 6.00 I picked the guys up, I knew the full monty they had earlier, would have worn off, what with all the excitement of the day, so I dropped them off at the Friers Oak pub/restaurant opposite the Golf Club, for more food to keep them going through the evening.

1.15 am and session over, I drove them back them to the T'lodge and armed them with ham sandwiches and cake, which I made earlier just in case they got peckish. Everyone was “cream crackered”, it had been a long day for us all, and the weekend was still not over.

After a good night sleep we met up at 11.00am for, would you believe, breakfast at the Little Chef, next to T'lodge, handy I fought. The guy's had the “Olympic Breakfast”. I tend not to eat anything that's bigger than me, I just had an omelette ahhhhh! After breakfast, we had time to kill before the flight home, so back to “Woon Towers” we trolled for more music, mayhem and record knowledge exchange. At 2.30 pm, I had to drag Keith, Jens and Carl by the scruff of their necks and head off toward airport sunset. The journey turned out to be a piece of gateaux, just like the day before, which by now seemed a lifetime away. Now 3.30 pm it was with a heavy heart we bade our fond farewells.

I know we had the time of our lives, the weather was unbelievable, everyone who came to SOUL Session 5 were fantastic, the music played was perfect, atmosphere awesome, the in between, killing time, warm, friendly and lots of fun.

I can only hope you all enjoyed the night as much as we: Andy, Paula, Keith and myself did.

We not only enjoyed the night, but the day and a half with them as well, Jens and Carl you can rest assured that you did the business but to perfection.

A week on and I could do it all over again, thank you and missing you already as they say in the U S of A.
