Well i hope it isn't too late to wish everone again a very HAPPY NEW YEAR,

And we're back in full swing at least for the time being, as always looking forward to our event at "The Corner Pocket" and as mentioned extra record stock being taken so lots of club classics at the ready.

So having just got back home to find my potted conifer trees doing an Irish Jig around the patio due to the gale force winds that are hitting the UK at the moment, i though yeah all back to normal.

wind_umbrella_zpscc9856f7.jpg

So here are a few of my selections for Northern Soul "Wind" based tunes.

The Volcanoes "Storm Warning"
Rita And The Tiaras "Gone With The Wind
The Supremes "Stormy"
Nolan Chance "Just Like The Weather" okay not the most original choice!
Bob Relf "Blowing My Mind To Pieces"
The Exciters "Blowing Up My Mind"

Well we seem to be still in the throws of some gale force weather and as Derek mentioned everything is back to normal and with only 10 days into the new year Park Hampers are hitting every television comercial break informing us about having a debt free Christmas (if i'm not mistaken their advertisement has been running from January 1st) can anyone remember when Christmas was just in December? and of course Cadbury Creme Eggs are in the shops.

"How Do You Know It's Christmas? When The Easter Eggs Are In The Shops"

So it's all systems are go for next Saturday and if you really fancy a top night you can't go wrong with this event, an excellent venue with a large spacious dance floor, nice crowd, great bar prices and of course a 100% Across The Board dance floor driven music policy you can see why this night just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

So looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Russ

P.S since the new Soul Source face lift is it me or are thing not working as they should be?

Great job Miss T with the video,

As you can see this is such a fantastic venue with so many plus points "The Corner Pocket" aka "The Pocket" surely will only go from strengh to strengh and perhaps not seen on all the shots in the video but the numbers there was excellent and even more impressive due to the competition with other events on the night,

Indeed I think most of the footage was from the mid part of the night (when you were still abel to get around unhindered, that didn't half change as numbers swelled) and of course your skills Miss T are very welcome in showcasing the event...top job looking forward to seeing you Saturday.

Russ

PS glad you enjoyed the flowers

Evening fellas,

Yeah as you say Woody the feedback for Saturday is all coming back with a fantastic vibe and everyone seems to be really looking forward to the first event of the year, so can we expect record numbers to be attending? I think there might be a fair chance of this happening so if you want a great night of soul that really is 100% dance floor driven you have to get down to "The Pocket"

At our last event you got to hear as well as a great selection of old school club favourites, Tony "A" aka Ado played a song I haven't heard played out (or even heard) since days of the Rotherham Assembley Room's (and I see Tony is now using a picture of the records label for his Soul Source site avatar) and that is the once massive high octane 100 mph Funk dancer.

J.J Callier's "Pusherman" from the period where Jazz Funk was making it's stamp on the world of Northern Soul, "Pusherman" is full of social comment and perhaps more poignant today than it was back then and if you've a copy in your box you've a result as replacements copies are quite easily toping the £160 mark, well done Tony a brave play that had the dance floor bouncing.

Evening Tezza,

So true some great tunes just don't seem to have traveled, i remeber telling a friend about Bobby Hebb's "You Want To Change Me" and he went blank he knew "Love, Love, Love" but the afore mentioned song not a faint murmur of recognition.

And as you say Tezza unless you get about you often miss out on some great music that so often become very localised, perhaps so often down to DJ preference as each DJ tends to have his or her own musical slant and their playlist is geared accordingly.

So hands up and i'll say sorry that i've missed Mr Callier's funky dance floor stomper that is still getting the plays and remember back to a time when i could stomp my way though the entire song without the need for an oxygen break every 30 seconds and a nice sit down afterwards to recover.

Evening Chaps,

sorry about the late arrival, just got in from work.

Very true about different area's & records sometimes not traveling, got some tunes I play at "The Old Nags Head" (our Manchester venue) I would'nt dream of playing in Mexborough (not that brave..... lol). No really though, different area, different crowd, different taste's, it's just how it is. What can fill a dance floor in one place can empty it in another :tumbleweed3:

My policy is, do your homework, sometimes target people you know & try to get to know your audience.....   :hatsoff2:

I thing that if you are from Sheffield and you play in Manchester etc you should play your Sheff stuff there. They probably relish the chance to hear something different. Not heard Bobby Hebb for an age Russ - Nice one

Long gone are the days of all venues playing the same core of rare records - Listed in Blues & Soul.

So many good records to go at

So good to hear some "forgotten" & "different" tunes

And you will ! ! !

Hi fellas,

I have to agree wholeheartedly with all your observations, I always like to hear something a little different from often the same selection of records, the Kev Roberts Top 500 hundred springs to mind here but these are at the risk of saying so very often hugely over played but do seem to be the records so often requested (and I must put my hand up and say my collection would stand testament to this)

Derek your point about record lists was once so very true and thankfully changes to a great extent for the better but certain records seem almost inescapable even now and become must haves...Little Richard "Get Down With It" seemed one such play.

Tezza like your deck policy "Very much a this is me and this is what I play" but of course requests permitting, re..J.J Callier

Woody you too are bang on the money and some good advice for any traveling DJ's just do a little research or better still if you can pay a visit and hear what the crowd like themselves.

So let's all bring our own take on things to the Soul Music fans out there do I really want to hear the same music at every event?

Russ

PS now where's that Bobby Hebb record

PPS Tony bet you never thought " Pusher Man" would cause so much debate!

Evening all from a yet again very very windy Sheffield.

And once more the conifer trees have decided to try and make a run for it from the patio this time they seem better organised than before and have got a lot farther away i think the ring leader is a 4 year old Norwegian Spruce but any more of this and he's in for a severe chop... he has been warned.

rexfeatures_1517718a_zps82e7a3bc.jpg

Young Rex was realising the mid afternoon walk wasn't perhaps the best idea!

Come hail or shine the only weather you'll be geting this Saturday at "The Corner Pocket" is gale force Soul that really will blow you off your feet.

So the countdown to tomorrow night has well and truly started and I will soon start on sorting out my records for my spot (due to the amount of requests from our last event I'm bringing along an extra box along with me just in case...and as Tony will say anything under 50 lbs in weight is a boys box but the chore of carring loads of vinyl back and forth to your car does get to you a little or... a lot!)

Fantastic feedback and so many people really revved up for a great night and special guest DJ Pete Taylor never fails to deliver along with your regular teamsters, Dave "Woody" Wood, Derek G, Tony aka "Ado" behind the scenes man extraordinaire (and of course spiner of J.J Callier) and your truely all playing you some quality Soul, Motown and Rhythm'n'Blues and remember folks our music policy is 100% dance floor driven!

So come on down and see what the buzz imagesbee_zps5afbe437.jpg  is all about.

PS, Thanks Tony for sorting out my parking requirements!

Nice one Guys,

"Great" posts by you all. Can't tell you how much Me & Miss T are looking forward to tomorrow night, gonna be "great". Looking forward to seeing Pete too, our paths have'nt crossed for a while & hearing his spot, when it comes to Northern Soul Pete's really at "The Top Of The Tree".

As for Me I've drawn the two later spots this time 8:45pm/9:30pm & then the last spot 12:15am/1:00am, few surprises in the "Old Magic Box" as well as the Club Classics, Seventies winners & Current spins.

Spoke to the Manager at The Pocket & the Area Manager & I'm assured by both the "Bar" will be open while 12:30am & the Room & Dancing while 1:00am.

If your feeling the cold winter biting come down tomorrow night, we'll soon have you warmed up, bring your Dancing Shoes......  :hatsoff2::wave:

Hello again Everybody,

well Folks we've had another "great" night down here at The Corner Pocket at Mexborough, really surprised by the brilliant  turnout considering there were so many other do's on & the state of the weather.

Hey we've still got the old atmosphere, crackin' night, special thanks to our Guest DJ Pete Taylor, fantastic spot Pal, records to die for (Your On Top Girl by The Empires, if only....). In fact " Great" Spots by Everyone, you all played blinding sounds & all of us had a ball behind the decks. The number of people who came up to me & said "great to have a Soul Night back at the Pocket where it belongs", unreal. As well as our local following people travelled from far & wide again, nice to see some of the old faces turning up too. Massive thanks to you all for your fantastic support & for all the great posts & positive feedback  . Special thanks to the Ladies on the door, Miss T & Jackie. Also a big thankyou again to Gary & Mark, for the flyering & sharing on F/Book, nice one Fellers  . Well a very good evening to everyone,

I'm not sure if i can really add anything to what Woody as already said about Saturday's event at "The Corner Pocket" only to echo so much of what has already been mentioned.

An outstanding turnout to say so many factors were against us from, the time of the year to the clashing of event and perhaps most importantly the severe weather that was expected and to somewhat of a lesser extent the weather that arrived in the shape of snow, ice and below freezing tempretures, yet these factors didn't seem too much of a deterrent and "The Pocket" crowd were well rewarded for their loyalty.

Form my arrival to the very final record of the night the dance floor was never once empty, great spots all round by all the nights Jocks, from an almost pure classic oldies spot from Woody (with just a hit of hot on the scene current plays) to the novelty record of the evening Symarip's "Skinhead Moonstomp" great choice and setting the bar high for what could pehaps be a "Pocket" tradition in the making that DJ's add a novelty spin to their play list, so i'm game.

"We got three million miles to reach on the moon, so let's start gettin' happy now"

Guest DJ for the night was the very professional Pete Taylor who was disc perfect and his musical selection was 100% dance floor friendly a quality set of just over easy dance tunes with a couple of very sort after plays amongst them, all played on the genuine original vinyl, both impressive and very expensive, well done Pete that box of yours just kept finding the spot.

Finishing the night off, Derek "G" took to the decks and did a very Motown flavoured set that was as near as you'll get to being musically all things to all men (and women) even managing to play a record by one J.J Callier, top marks Mr G...., "you came, you saw, you played.

As for myself i'll let you be the judge of my skills behind the decks but i must say a thank you to all of you that danced and enjoyed my selection of Soul music, for after all is said and done you are not just mine but all of us here's main priority and your night drives ours.

From myself and us all, a massive thanks to each and everyone of you who has worked to help and promote this event and of course the most important people of all, those who gave their support and came on the night.

Next month you're in for a real treat with special guest DJ Tezzza from Sheffield's Route 61, a great DJ who really knows what will keep the dancers happy, an event not too be missed.

Till then go steady,

Russ

the dedication of the soul folk of Sheffield and surrounding areas got to be a winner

After all the anticipation of this event when it came to the night expectations fell as we left home in a Blizzard - weren't even sure we were going to get there.

Weather cleared and place began to fill. The night then just got better & better, dance floor got busy - Pete Taylor set the bar high with some awesome tunes (as always).

Never looked back

Great night

Great crowd
