Evening Frank...

Yes as you say time is flying by at an alarming rate....we're almost in spring now but just to say this once again every CCS night is winner and I really must get over more often as every City Centre Soul event is always worth the trip over, an outstanding night that never fails to hit the spot.

Hi Frank,

I can see you're having somewhat of a posting frenzy this morning and as well in The Steel City the sun is shining and the spring flowers are starting to all show their little faces...argh!

Well on to one of my pet hates fleabay-logo_zpsa97b26de.png not that there's anything wrong with it (excluding the fact it's not a real auction, friends bidding each others items up, people making more money on postage that are more than the cost of the goods and incorrect discriptions)

So my dealings with said site haven't been that great but as a word or warning i'm in the process of replacing some of my records that have seen better days with copies in a far happier condition yet a recent purchase from an Americian seller has been a far from happy experience.

My very recent purchase of The Percisions "It This Is Love" on Drew Records advertised as VG+ slight WOL (writing on label) is far from that, the WOL is in thick felt tip pen and might say Arthur Ashford a member of the group but that's a long shot it could also pass for Alchoholics Anonymous or even Aberdeen Angus.

The rest of the label is water stained and the record surface (Styrene) has had so much use it's turned gray from black and looks as though a sheet of sand paper has been used as a polishing cloth there is no way this is even in FAIR condition and so bad i would not play this on anyone elses equipment, it has a constant whosh from start to finish but that make a nice change from the crackle and pops that are constant, so i'll either pop it on the Rock-Ola or give it away free to a good home, couldn't even say in all honesty this is a collection filler it so bad and to make this worse i'm not covered by UK distance selling legistration.

Perhaps the American definition of VG+ is different to ours....very different! well "you win some you loose some"as they say and on this occasion i did the latter but you do live and learn.

We were in our room at the Old Nags head on sunday afternoon and nice to hear some great comments on how the pub puts on all the soul events , the definitive soul pub in my opinion and CCS is ideal for a night out on that weekend trip to our city and as we have pegged our door price and still offer great guests and a wide range of tunes ,then why not give us a go on the 25th

Evening Frank,

And I'll be looking forward to you list of plays anytime soon but in the meantime here's one that is

fed70044-d520-4359-936f-01d434f76a86_zps

On this months CCS Top Ten.

Kim Weston "You Hit Me (Right Where It Hurts Me") Tamla Motown

Well after being around in one shape or another via all manner of carvers, bootlegs and illegal garage pressings, The Motown Record group under the new banner of the Universal Music Group (Capitol Records) decied to to give this single and many other previously unreleased singles a release in their own right.

So here from late 1965 come this a pure slice of classic Motown that for some reason was relegated to the Hitsville vaults in the Kim Weston format but getting a genuine issue in 1968 by Alice Clark using the same backing track on Warner Bros Records and then booted to kingdom come on the Canterbury label (but i think the light blue issue on this label might be a genuine release so please don't qoute me on this)

With a "up and at 'em" attitude from the off this track is as pure a dancer as you might wish for with a big Motown production that has The Funk Brothers and a some great sweeping studio strings that add such a great depth and feel to the entire record and you really have to wonder why Berry Gordy and Motown didn't release the song when first recored but as mentioned before did the Hitsville stable just have too much good music too choose from and mistakes were made?

But what classy offering from Detroit's finest that is getting heard in it's original form at long last via a legitimate release but if i was to be put on the spot and asked what version i prefere what would i say?.....i might have to think about that!

Either way "You Hit Me (Right Where It Hurts Me) is a great track full of that certain Motown magic and really when you here the saying "they don't make 'em like that any more" and the truth is they really don't.

Also been playing them at "Guest Spots" & at our "Yorkshire" venue too to a great response from the dance floor.

Few more sounds new to the C.C.S decks to come this month, here's hoping...... Woody C.C.S.  :hatsoff2:

Hi Woody,

Yeah the Deanna Shenderey's take on  "Comin' Home Baby"  has really taken off on the last two occasions you've played this at CCS's sister event The Corner Pocket In Mexborough the dance floor has been packed solid (and i know you were asked for it to be played at least twice in you spot!)

But here's a version of the song that might not be known to that many people from Britian's own Baron Knights and perhaps far better known for their musical parodies of popular pop songs than genuine and serious single releases but here is one of them the "B" side to "Peanut Butter" from 1964.

This take is a pretty acurate and faithful version and to my listening ear sounds very British, but with the songs original organ solo replaced by an harmonica break that works rather well and far better than you might guess so here it is so see what you think.

Well we've had our usual great show of interest in the CCS Top Ten for this month and the records that might get a spin that just haven't got into the chart yet.....so here is a couple from team member Frankie "M's" selection of vinyl delights and our first one from FM is this.

The Epitome Of Sound "Where Were You" Sandbag Records

Can you believe this is the "B" side to "You Don't love Me"?... well it is and what a great record in it's own right and seems to be a very popular spin at the moment and i'm sure this will be requested on Saturday in my spot at The Corner Pocket in Mexborough but moving on from what might be said to be an "Epitome" of a Northern Soul record a pounding beat great build up and an angst filled vocal by Eugene Thomas, heart string pulling lyrics with great harmonising backing vocals and some well placed sweeping strings and i'm going out on a limb and saying that when released in 1968 "Where Where You" was perhaps more chart friendly than "You Don't Love Me" with a great production by Robert Paladino that is about as good as you can get in only 2:29 seconds (and who also wrote both sides) how ever these two gems failed to make the national charts is a mystery.

Prices seem to have risen very steeply in the last year or two for "You Don't Love Me" a single that had made number 11 on the charts in Cleveland, Ohio and both the demo copy (black writing) and the Issue copy (red writing) are getting very pricey but a word of warning to any wouldbe buyers there are two very good look-a-like pressing out there and to an unwary buyer might be enough to fool them the originals have MS 3051 & MS 3502 + RP SCRATCHED INTO RUN OUT GROOVE the issue seems a little easier to spot than the demo copy the stock issue original is on a very slightly red tinted/off white label the pressing is simply red on white, so be careful out there.

Just for interest the original version of "You Don't Love Me" by The Epitome Of Sound was once booted as Moses Smith "You Don't Love Me" on Sandbag (name only label) and was a slighty speeded up version, argh the strange world of Northern Soul eh?

Well how fast time really does fly and we're well into April now and almost set for this months CCS event at The Old Nags Head.

I know both Woody and Frank have been doing a spot of Spring cleaning (the record variety might i add) so expect to hear new additions and re-activations in both of their selections. So it's been a bright and sunny day here in the Steel City and perhaps the winter coast might be getting retired for the time to come but i remember my last dealings with winter clothes.

After putting on three pairs of socks, six jumpers, six pairs of trousers, five woolly hats, four scarves, two thick coats and a pair of boots, I waddled outside.

Ten seconds later I was laying face down in the snow and I couldn't move.

"You're coming with me," said the Primark security guard.

fbcdb883-5cfa-48c3-b4e7-d16c6968f4b2_zps

So what's on the musical menu tonight you may ask? well we're still on with a few selection from Frank's wide and varied collection and here tonight is!

The Inspirations "Gotta Find A New Love" Benn-X Records/UK Release on Goldmine Records

Well here is a Philadelphia produced slice of smooth cross over soul that languished in a vault (i believe on a Mercury Records test pressing only) without an official release although heard out at selected venues was never given a release via official or unoffical channels until a few years ago and the song has been layed to vinyl and is out there on a limited release footing and yours for around the £25 mark

Hands up in the air The Inspiration are are group i don't know a great deal about but from the small amount i know about them they were a vocal group based in Los Angeles and recorded for the Breakthrough label in the 1960's Perhaps until now best known for the Northern Soul dancer "No One Can Take Your Place" the original Breakthough release is major money but it was also released on a 1970's re-issue Breakthough label credited to Charles Diamond And The Inspirations.

Okay so i'm guessing by the vocal harmonies they were at least four or five piece oufit with a lead vocalist perhaps even Charles Diamond? and in the back of my mind i seem to think there is a different version of the song somewhere out there.

With it's airy and floating feel "Gotta Find A New Love" is just one more track that sits better with todays dancers and soul fraternity than perhaps it ever has done with it's steady paced tempo and easy vocal treatment that is both pleasent and catchy and with shades of a doo-wop backing vocal this easy on the ear dancer really makes a mark. with an understated musical production that works on all levels and still manages to deliver a good and solid qulity dancer of a tune that might be high on the next CCS Top Ten.

Evening Frank,

Oh yeah Ron Holden "I'll Forgive And Forget" on Challenge Records i still have one in the "Red Box" once massive and well worth a reactivation and I'll say this was from my Wigan influenced selections...that if truth be known I stiil tend to lean to after all these years but as you mention Frank record prices are through the roof even the stuff that was once everywhere seems to go for a tidy penny nowadays, I'm still surprised as to the price The Precisions "If This Is Love" on Drew Records can command and even though it is available on a genuine reissue and a disputed one but this doesn't seems to have not impaired it's price (all copies under £25 seem to be worn out but that might be my obsivation only, styrene+play=worn out record) but with some copies going for as much as £50 for a record that entered the American R&B charts and made the top thirty, so perhaps not so much to do with rarity but more with demand!

I'm in the process of replacing some of my old collection 45's with better condition copies but I've had my fingers burnt a couple of times in recent months with American dealers/sellers who seem to have a different interpretation of Good + and more so with Very Good and Very Good + so be careful buyers out there it not just the import taxes that get you with our cousins over the pond and no distance selling regulations to fall back on!

Appologies for late posts, back with more reviews tomorrow.

But here we have a vocal by Jimmy Ruffin that seems to bear quite a resemblance to Jackie Wilson who at the time everyone seemed to want to be but that might just be me but quicly moving on "Don't Feel Sorry For Me" is a nice Pop Corn inspired tune and as you know that's a part of the Northern Soul genre i have grown to like more and more.

Here we have a just over steady dancer that like so many others before it is perhaps is more in sinc with today's dancers than ever before and from pre Motown days by a good three years, with shades of the Drifters and hints of Billy Storm "Don't Feel Sorry For Me" seem to be quite a cocktail vocal musical styles.

With a simple and very catchy vocal by Jimmy and a nice musical production that has some great horns and a nice rhythm back beat to it this is not just Pop Corn but the pecan and butter special in a family size bucket and now commanding a pretty heafty price tag you won't get much change in today's market from £200+ and perhaps asking the question

"It's a Miracle This Wasn't A Hit"

I must say a very nice record there Frank and how long before your solo spots are all Pop Corn based and for me that can't come too soon!

Well it's another late good evening to everyone from a warm Steel City and yet another lovely day here on this side of The Snake,

And here tonight is Frank "Mid-Tempo" Manley as he informs me is his new call sign and his last selection from his box of vinyl delights, so what are we waiting for then?

EJ Chandler "I Can't Stand To Lose You"  SOS [sounds Of Soul] Records (and not to be confused with the illegal record oporation of the 1970's who used the same name for their 100% illegal bootleg releases)

"I Can't Stand To Lose You" was later released officially on British Destiny Records ...okay so i've got that out of the way!

And here we have yet another once massive play that has fallen a little by the wayside im more recent years and i'm guessing not down to the record as such but more to it's tempo that although not going through the sound barrier it's still very much an high octane dancer that was so much a record of it's time both fast and punchy and a tune to set the dance floor bouncing and perhaps a shade outside Franks "Mid-Tempo" comfort zone....no of course not!

So I'm putting my hands up firmly in the air (and getting ready to be shot down) i've got to say personally don't think E.J's vocal is the best ever, and indeed far from it (but since when as that held a Northern track back for that matter) but what it lacks in vocal smoothness it more than makes up for in sheer drive....okay hope that let's me off the hook a little.

"I Can't Stand To Lose You" has some simple and easy to sing along lyrics that with nicely worked drums and clashing tambourines oh and of course just a touch of brass (via a trumpet or two) this little ditty cracks along at a fair rate of knots and now add a helping of layed back Hamond organ and some girl singer harmonies and you can see that any faults this track might have are far weighed out bay that certain something that makes some records simply Northen Soul classics and here is one of them.

Looking forward to a very busy weekend......
travel straight from work tonight for dinner with Mark and Julie Goodwin, and a funpacked two days of family visiting and footie. Also I have the joy of DJ'ing at two of the finest soul venues in Manchester; City Centre Soul Nites courtesy of my great mate David Wood... a brilliant venue with a strong OVO, quality tune music policy, then on sunday at the Walkden Legion all dayer thanks to my other great mates George Hughes and Sue Tydd, at a venue with one of the best dancefloors and atmospheres that you can find.
It would be great to see any of my mates from Stoke/Manchester/The North West if your planning on attending either, or both of these great soul events, cheers Guys, Glen
