Fantasic night on Saturday..... Filled up early'sh, packed by 10-10:15pm.
Great tunes from all DJs, especially guest "Paul" who did a fabulous job yet again for CCS. It was as always a showcase of top quality soul all played on lovely original vinyl and feedback from all has been very complimentary. Got some fabulous photos to post at a later date and hopefully (barring laptop trouble again) should get them into a slideshow shortly before the next session on October the 24th. Great to see a busy dancefloor even very late into the night making it a very lively night with an energetic finish! Can't thank Frankie M and Russ Adams enough for all the behind the scenes promoting and encouragement which is much appreciated by me and Woody.
Was a fantastic night with fantastic tunes & fantastic people.  Big big "Thankyou" all who attended, nice to see some more new face's again too.
Thanks to our Hoast's "Sean & Tracey" & all their staff, top job as always.
We'll see everyone again in October if not before..... Miss T & Woody

Hi Frank,

Always a top night at The Old Nags Head as I'm sure anyone who has ever been will bare whiteness to that.

With the CCS music policy that is to bring you the finest tunes from far and wide you can be assured of hearing something a little different as well as classics and forgotten gems....and of course all played on original vinyl (and this means the genuine records not reissues, facsimiles or anything that isn't 100% genuine OVO truly means that)

So to see and hear more remember to book this date in your diary.

Wow Frank how quick time flies (and seems to go even faster each year) so without knowing it next month will soon be in us.

With any luck I can get the well awaited CCS Top Ten sorted for next month, my apologies for the last chart but techinial site problems were to blame and not me.....honest!

So we'll get to see what the new playlist has to offer and even if there is a new number one.

hi Russ

had some problems with my home computer myself , mind you it does run on Valves and steam  and its about time  I weighed it in

and seeing that I work for a computer parts distributer ( though a number cruncher ) , then there is no excuse , but why spend

money on technology when there is another wonderful 45 to obtain for  my wants list !! , truthfully  this record buying has become a bug

with me  and I might need to seek help very soon .

Well it's a very good evening everyone from a very wet and cold Sheffield, we still have the noise from the Tramlines Music Festival drifting over but the weather seems to have put a damper on that a little and is a shame for those people who have paid their ticket price to stand in the rain and get wet...argh the great British Summer, well at least the rains warm.

I had my photo taken at a REM gig once. That’s me in the corner…

Well there's no danger of of anything like that happening on the 22nd at The Old Nags Head, the sun always shines at every CCS event and a hot night awaits all those present!

Hi team,

not too sure if this old school track gets an outing on the decks at The Old Nags Head but it might be time to reactivate this once popular nighter spin.

The Reflections "You Don't Love Me" Went Records

And not be confused with the group of the same name who recorded on Ed Wingate's Golden World Records this outfit originally i believe hailed from Miami and were a vocal harmony group with Perk Badgers of "Do Your Stuff" fame as main vocalist, "You Don't Love Me"  is also co-written and produced by him too but to my ears having a very sounding Chicago feel to the entire record both in delievery and production and with a vocal style very similar in style to that of The Esquires and hey is that such a bad thing i ask myself?

With very simple lyrics and vocal treatment we have a no frill "nuts and bolts" recording that although simple on all counts does have that certain "Northernness" to it that is all so very important, no big productions just a back to basics approach that has a heavy showing on the danceability scale and you'll be lucky today to see this underplayed mover in decent condition for anything under the £100 mark and a record i believe is very much in keeping with the CCS musical backbone.

Evening all

Thanks to everyone who has asked about the CCS Top Ten i'm sure it won't be long before the new chart is out and now with the site being fully up and running the chart for August will soon be published.

Not too sure what the fellas have been buying i know Woody was in the market for a very nice copy of this old time favourite (in fact it might be in his box even now so we'll have to wait and see) so here's the said disc.

Fully agree there Frank,

And always lots of comments at the CCS events about the chart, if anything it really is a conversation starter and gives a feel to music policy for the night and unlike a DJ playlist our top ten reflects how a record is received either on the dance floor or via requests (and we know that the CCS chart is closely followed in some quarters very closely indeed) so whats that mean, well in real terms how that said tune went down! (isn't there a book by Kev Roberts that does a similar thing?)

And with the addition of a respected guest DJ at each event (to often give a different take on things) the CCS ethic of bringing the best Northern Soul, Motown and dancer style Rhythm'n' Blues that are tailor made to the audience seem to be hitting the mark, so a massive well done to both you and Woody who put that 100% commitment into each and every City Centre Soul event to make it such a great night.

Well here's the first of our charts new entries going stright in at,

10 Leo Price "Hey Now Baby" Up-Down Records

this is the reworked version on Up-Down Records with horns with a far fuller production than the 1st release on Hull Records and i would say the version on Hull is more R&B inspired than the slightly later cut on Up-Down that is more soul based okay so that the basics...phew!

Apart from the fact the Leo is the brother to old time Rock'n'Roller Lloyd Price who's million seller "Personality" is still a part of many radio shows that do a rockin' 50's programme and film soundtracks. This New york production of "Hey Now Baby" with the rocking horns does add another dimention over the original cut on Hull records but as a word of warning the price difference between the two versions is quite steep from the low £20's for the first edition to the higher end of £500 for some of the Up-Down releases, but that aside both cuts ooze dance floor presence and with said added horns and some skull (wooden block) percussion on the later release you have a cool and head nodding dancer that has that certain feel to it that just sets it apart from the crowd and wow does this cut blend musical styles with even a spot of Latin rhythm in the mix this is quite a fusion of genre from Rock'n'Roll, Latin and thumping Rhythm'n'Blues.

With a simple vocal by Leo and lyrics that doesn't require too much work you'll be bopping along to this mid tempo mover for a long time to come and back to those added horns do they make a difference?...you'd better believe it!

Here's a little reminder of the CCS April event "Upstairs" at the Old Nags Head.  Great support as always from the guest Glen Goodwin from Hole in the Wall Club London.  So enjoy the pics and the tracks...two of Miss T's current favourites and come on down to see us at City Centre Soul this coming Saturday the 22 August 2015. Always a great night of across the board tunes played on original vinyl with great guests.  Everyone plays for the dancefloor so always a great dance to be enjoyed, and only £3 on the door.  Saturday's guest is the fantastic Paul Welsby from Manchesters "Nu Beat" & "The Hideaway" Clubs. See you all there, looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

Well her goes with the second of our new chart entries in at this months

Sherri Taylor  "He's The One That Rings My Bell" Gloreco Records/ PG Records (later UK release on Outta Sight)

From the early 60's comes this R'n'B Popcorn Detroit cut that is co-writen by soul legend Tony "Landslide"Clarke and Billy “Roquel” Davis, frequent songwriting partner of Berry Gordy and co-owner of the Anna Records label with Berry’s sister Gwen. i'm guessing must have been Sherri's last attempt at solo success her first release was a duet on Motown Records with "Singin'' Sammy Ward a record entitled "Oh Lover" and seems a very raw production to come from the Motown Stable but the first of many Motown duets.

"He's The One That Rings My Bell"  is a far richer and better recorded effort in my opion and thumps along at a steady rate of knots and is every inch a Rhythm'n' Blues dancer from the opening beat to the final note and note the very subtle bell chime that follows each mention of the phrase"he's the one that rings my bell" perhaps the phrase has changed a little over the years but then again perhaps in early 1962 the radio stations might have shied away from any record that might have even hinted at any sexual innuendo.

With Sherri's semi-rough vocal delievery mixed with some sassy horn work and the backing singers giving some cool "ding dongs" you'll be hard pushed not to be double talcing the dance floor.

Apart from the UK release there is an another American issue that came out slightly later on PG Records this cut has different writer credits and give mention to George Martin And The Crusiers (as i take it the backing group) but the song is the same.

And although perhaps not as rare as you might think it is but due to buyer demand this has really pushed prices up in recent years so finding a copy might be the easy thing... now paying for it might be another matter.

Morning Frank,

As alway's i'm sure your new finds/buys are to their usual standard and you're raring to play them (DJ bit here! ... whenever i want to play out a new addition to the box either a new purchase or a re-activation, for some reason I seem to get a barrage of requests given to me and these new spins don't get an outing but a request is a request) and as we know

"always leave the dance floor happy"

So a couple more record reviews to come for this months CCS Top Ten......keep watching this space!

Yes I agree  Russ , I take the one box  and always leave behind a couple of requests , but arriving on the bus /tram has its

setbacks luggage wise ( and my bad leg ) , so we do our best  and so far so good  . I do agree that I have a few " ive been meaning to play "

and the spot goes so quick  ( unless you have died on your feet , or as a couple of xmas,s ago at bury ,it clashes with buffet time )

what I can say its the varied and fresh selections that you can hear at CCS  that makes it is well worth the trip

Well after somewhat of a busy day (appologies to Woody and Miss T) here's another installment of

                                                                         cdd7195c-9da8-483f-a1eb-771a046d2205_zps

So here at number

8 The Reflections "June Bride" Golden World Records

Well here on the chart is a both easy on the ear and easy on the pocket double sider from the  Detroit "Blue-eyed soul/Doo Wop" outfit who's biggest claim to fame via the soul world come from two massive tracks "(Just Like) Romeo And Julliet" from 1964 and a number 6 hit on the American Billboard Hot 100 and "Like Adam And Eve" in 1964 as a item of trivia[ ("Just Like) Like Romeo And Julliet" was covered by Austrailian New Wave Popsters Mental As Anything in 1980 and scored a top 30 hit on the nations chart.

Okay so on to "June Bride" the "B" side to out "Of The Picture" a from 1965 a tidy soul based stepper that had a few venue spins in it's day and still might find big plays in the not too distant future!

And just one more feather in the cap of this record might just be that "June Bride"  writing credits contain one Richard "Popcorn" Wylie a huge name in the world of Northern Soul and on Ed Wingates "Golden World Records" you also wonder how many of Motowns in-house band's musicians were moonlighting on this recording?

With a very easy vocal by lead singer Tony Micale (later to be replaced by Frank Amodeo) this simple yet slick soul smoocher is a pleasant and refreshing change with it"s slow tempo, and from the stylish vocal harmonies to the understated musical treatment that although sounds simple is far from that and on your closer listening attention there's alot going on in the background but don't blink or you just might that very subtle xylophone that is so polished you could slip on it, very much a classy finisher to cool off a hot CCS night.
