It really is rewarding for us here at Charity Soul to see so may turn up for our charity events. Having seen at first hand the unstinting efforts put in by TOC, Nigel, Tony et al to make sure these go off without any unseen 'hitches' I can honestly say I've NEVER  in all my years  (no comment TOC) in employment, worked with such totally dedicated bunch of guys. The only 'problem' during the evening was that we ran out of wrist bands, such is the popularity of the Manhattan!!!!

We are constantly trying to improve (?) the experience at the Manhattan and make it (in spite of George Osborne) value for money, so that when people come on here say how much they enjoyed the event is a great reward for us.

The next scheduled events at the Manhattan are:

Saturday 23rd April

Saturday 23rd July

Saturday 22nd October

A grand day out as Walis and Gromit might say . first of all it goes without saying that these charity soul events are for a  superb cause and that all the money ends up where it needs to be , fighting cancer. Secondly as a stand alone soul event these three roomers tick all the boxes  . if you like Modern ,Northern or the magical mix that is the roots room you will hear plenty that you like .  I took my son [21 yrs] and two mates from Manchester over the pennines and we had a great day .congratulations to the organisers for all their hard work . look out for future Charity soul events in Harrogate and Leeds it really is a grand day out.

Had a fantastic night on Saturday.  The place was absolutely rammed!  Multi-room events are great, with something for everyone, but you do spend a lot of time speeding from one room to the other in the hope you don’t miss your favourite tunes.

I don't normally like driving to an event, as I do like a beer or three, but this is definitely one that I'm happy to drive to.

Fantastic to see my old mate Mr Drage, who played a brilliant spot - in fact the tunes in Dekka’s room kept me dancing all night.  It's just a shame I missed Steve Burke's spot in the main room, as I know he always delivers.

Only question I have is – when’s the next one?

Another great Charity Soul Uk event. There were another two 'charity' events in York so perhaps they saved the Manhattan being an embarrassing lockout, tho I understand it was close with wrist bands running out. The only downside being we missed catching up with some of the York regulars.

Never ceases to amaze me the graft and professionalism of the Charity Soul Uk team who once again delivered another excellent one plus all the djs across the three rooms who well and truly stepped up to the plate.

As always the Northern Room was busy, plenty of dance floor action and brilliant atmosphere. Must mention the 'modern room' - perhaps the best yet imo with a superb selection of tunes - Simon Hunt, who had his record sales table adjacent, also bent my ear with his compliments.

'Dekka's Roots Room' now opens a little later allowing a couple of freestyle spots early doors. Sadly I missed Jay Cee's but caught some of the Caverley Soul Club showcase from Di Layton and Steve Crawshaw. Cracking 7ts/ modern and hopefully we'll see more of them behind the decks at a future Charity Soul event.

Dekka's Roots Room was well and truly a 'Simon Hunt Special', curated by Simon and bringing his personal selection of djs. An eclectic mix of Mod, reggae/rocksteady/ska, 5ts & 6ts rnb, British Beat, Swing & Popcorn. Lovely to meet and chat to Kev Drage, reminiscing about our times in Peterborough  & thanks for the cd Kev.

Once again that lad Dekka did well - he's got a Mod room rightly to be proud of, with a deserved reputation. It was a close run thing tho, his sharp mod suit or the magnificent newly installed permanent dance floor....

Next one up at the Manhattan (23rd April) is a Mike Warburton Special in Dekka's Roots Room. Already an advance calendar highlight for many as, like Simon, Mike will be curating and bringing his personal selection of Djs associated with Manchester's 'Hideaway Club'  which presents another unique opportunity to see some of the finest making their debut in this neck of the woods. Plus there's no small matter of the May Leeds Rhinos spectacular.

Finally many thanks for the invite again to spin a few - playlist to follow.

Another superb night, really enjoyed spinnin for a spot and a half...... Been asked if I was doing a Charity CD of my spot again ( normally do and have contributed around £350 so far from my 3 previous Charity Soul CD's,) so if anyone is interested please let me know, playlist is on my facebook page. Will have some available at next event, and happy to receive donations of around £5 per disc, or donations can be made direct to Charity Soul. PM if you would like further info....cheers

Hi Guys:

This wasn't my first time at the Manhatten, but it was the first time I've played a modern set there. Early door means you can play and break tunes and a bit of necessity for me if the scene isn't to die of boardom: So a mix of favorites and newbies:

Cheryl Berdell    -              Giving It All To You           *

Carl Carlton         -              You Can’t Stop A Man In Love”  *

Gladys Knight    -              Make Yours A Happy Home
& The Pips

Gene Chandler -              Let Me Make Love To You            *

Winfield Parker                -              I Wanna Be With You

Dean Jackson     -              Ohh Baby

Lou Rawls           -              See You When I Git There            *

Barrett Strong   -              Is It True

Eugene Record -              Overdose of Joy

Jesse James       -              If You Want A Love Affair             *

If you like any or all of these, you might drop into the Claverly Soul Club, last Saturday of the month. :-)

All't very best

Steve

First up on the DJ rosta from Simon is my fellow Barnsley lad Yocky, he will be digging deep into his extensive collection and playing an eclectic RnB set especially for the Roots Room, something very much to look forward to, many thanks to Simon for bringing Yocky to the Roots Room, so that's 2 Barnsley lads for the price of one, wonder if he will bring in anymore?

As the Lord High Sheriff of Selby quite rightly, says this is the place to be to start the 2016 soul season. Established as the BEST 3 ROOM ALL-DAYER  IN GOD'S OWN COUNTY  you would not want to miss this one, in spite of the many 'johnny come lately' events that have sprung up recently.

The genre of music at the Manhattan is second to none, played by DJ's who travel the length and breadth of the country to be here and GIVE THEIR SERVICES FREE AS A CONTRIBUTING GESTURE  to aid and help Charity Soul raise funds for Prostate Cancer, is an indicating factor in how much respect they have for our aims in life.

Get to the Manhattan you know it makes sense.

DJ info on Roots Room guest , Kev Kuss ....

'....I born and raised in Sheffield. My first interest in soul music was in the early sixties listening to sounds of Otis Redding, Wilson Picket, Sam Cook and The Drifters. In my later school years Motown was also an influence. I came across 'Northern Soul' in 1972 at Nether edge hall, a club in Sheffield. I then went on to places like Heartbeat (later known as Samanthas) in Sheffield, Wigan Casino and most other places that were running in the seventies. In the mid eighties I got married had two children and joined the Army so my passion for Soul music was more or less put on hold. On leaving the Army in the late nineties I rediscovered the 'Northern Soul' scene and very soon started going to R'n'B venues. I am passionate about all styles of Soul music particularly Doo Wop. I love playing rockin' R'nB' with a bit of uptempo Doo Wop or anything else that fits the bill.....'

and Nik Porter ...

...'First of all i'm just a collector and not a DJ ! This great music snared me when i was about 14 like most people who grew up in the 60's it was the whole package Mods, scooters style and of course music that was the attraction.I got took to the Leicester Nite Owl when i was 14 or so and just got hooked.Other places were the Il Rondo and numerous back rooms in pubs and even our youth club where a certain Micky Bang Bang introduced us to underground soul (no such thing as "northern soul" in those days)By the time i started work the Mod scene was dying out and it was about !970 when a crowd of us went to the Wheel and the music seemed to be more uptempo and "different".The days of soul, ska,RnB,beat, blues and white RnB all on the same playlist seemed to be over. Record prices and a young family to keep meant my record collection went along with being part of this new scene apart from the odd trip to the Engine at coalville. My music interest then turned to blues.

During the late 80's Sharon and I started getting back into the music albeit just local events, but we started getting disalusioned as they seemed to be Wigan revival nights.Much later we began to hear records that reflected the original scene (although i never heard them in the 60's ?)Trips to The Hideaway and especially Colsterworth got us hooked again.

I've DJ'd at Notts alnighter,Loughborough alnighter,Quorn Soul Club,Skegness Weekender and of course the Spa.Thankfully there are a number of venues true to what this underground scene was about;Adlib,Rhythm Shack,Dearne Playhouse,King Bee etc.

My playlist at the Spa has included Blues,Brit RnB,Beat,Popcorn etc hopefully i can please someone ?...'

Getting ready for this one the first charitysoul event at the manhattan in 2016.

As usual a top line up of djs  guaranteed to keep the dancefloor busy or at least your feet tapping.

For a change I'm not in the modern room and back to where I'm best ( careful what you say you lot) its the main room haha.

Volunteered to do the first spot which no one really wants but im looking forward to it. Be a nice change to be able to play some of them forgotten oldies and maybe a bit of something different.

HAPPY HOOKER you'd best get in early if you want to hear that tune ( NOT ramsey lewis, NOT marlena shaw etc ) shall have to remember to put it in the box now.

Sounds like all Dekkas djs are very organised wish I could say the same, mindst its the AMBIENCE SOUL NIGHT in PONTEFRACT next Saturday 16th jan so shall have to wait till after then.

Getting close now and really looking forward to the event , our first of the year and hopefully one of many for us all , the Manhattan gives us 3 rooms of top notch soul music that is second to none , and the most pleasing thing is that all the profits will go to frontline cancer research at York uni , unfortunately the prof can't make it this time as he's over in the states , so it's very important we keep on doing wot we do as this desease continues to take great people away from us with the likes of the complete legend being David Bowie being taken from us through cancer , so please support our cause and have a good time aswell , why ???? Cos WE can

Fully endorse what my learned and respected colleague TOC say about Cancer, it only hits home when someone we readily associate with  succumbs to this terrible disease.

I'll be doing my bit at Harrogate, having lost a close pal who I worked with for 20 years to Cancer, and seeing him pass away so tragically will enable me to give all in the fight to find a cure.

In spite of what certain skeptics say we can find a cure, remember they said the same about Polio and Malaria, having visited the York Laboratory on numerous occasions I can say that the team there are moving heaven and earth to find a cure, and certain initiatives undergoing clinical trials are looking extremely promising.

So if feel you want to help fight Cancer and love Soul, get yourselves down to Harrogate, have a great time enjoy the music, craic, surroundings and contribute to our cause.

YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE.

TOO EXCITED TO SLEEP  listening to some of Andy Bellwoods superb taste of the roots room podcasts [ see above ]  loving some of that latin vibe .  what a showcase this day is going to be.  what with the northern soul /modern/roots rooms .  no stone will be left unturned.  like brian potter said when he was going up on that stairlift ......... nearly there now.

Ha ha loving reading the comments , wot we started 30 months ago is starting to spread and the excitement ,? Well its spreading also , the line up of DJs in every room is fantastic , the quality of music that will be played will be top notch , the pre booked tickets are getting gobbled up pretty quick now and it should be a fantastic turn out on Saturday , all for the right reasons , to fight cancer , nobody is sacred from the terrible desease and we should all pull together to help find the cure , what we have in principle is a great formula to raise money and to enjoy ourselves at the same time , and the end result of where the money goes couldn't be better , now we have just to get our heads down and support the prof in his work and hope one day he finds the cure , personally I know one day he will because the work he is doing is unbelievable and he leaves no stone unturned into why the stem cell turns cancerous , and one day he will find the reasons why , so fingers crossed I / we will see you there on sat and what a time we will have ,!! Whoo 2 sleeps to go !!! Whooo !! He he he

Ay oop 'Rocky Balboa' your new name TOC , I have developed a serious bout of Sinusitis (as Spike Millgan's epitaph states "........told you I was ill"), but it will take more than this (an other things) to prevent me from missing the start of what looks like a really great fundraising year for Charity Soul with some outstanding events planned for 2016.

As 'Rocky' states there are many events taking place on the scene and its hard to be in two places at the same time, but IMHO, the Manhattan Lounge Harrogate, and the philosophy behind what Charity Soul goals in life are,  I cannot recommend this venue highly enough to anyone who wants to give his/her ha'penny worth in the support of a fantastic cause, and at the same time meet some totally dedicated, concensious and respected people who bring years (in Rocky's case lots of 'em) of experience on the soul scene and enjoy some fantastic music to boot (no pun intended)

The countdown has started. Just sorting through records. It's gonna be fun.

Great to be listed as The 5:15's bassist. Make my debut for them tomorrow after deejaying here for this great cause.

A music filled weekend is about to start. Can't wait!

Cheers

Just want to thank each and everyone of you who have commented on this thread, really do appreciate it. Your enthusiasm and commitment to this wonderful cause is nothing short of inspiring. It really does give all of us the Charity Soul back room staff a tremendous lift, many thanks to all who support these events both as DJ's and people who just come to dance and have a great time.
