Grumpy Christmas (and big birthday) bash Details

Checked with club and all fine for tonight, 8pm start.

By way of saying thanks to everyone who has supported us over the past four years+  and in an attempt to burn a bit of turkey / quorn off, we've decided to squeeze another Grumpy in before 2015 slips away and it'll be free to get in

The date for your diary is Sunday 27th December. This one-off session will run from 8pm-2.30 am or thereabouts.

Don't tell anyone but it happens to be Joan's 50th too

Same gaff as usual: Grumpy's Bar (formerly RNA Club), Canal Walk, Halton Rd, Runcorn, WA7 5QS

Unfortunately, Gaz Simon can't be with us so we've had to tweak times a little - see below. Hope they're ok for everyone and that Gaz can come and join us next year.

DJ Times

8-9: Grumpy gits

9-10: Col Denham

10-11: Kev Murphy

11.00-12. 00 Phil T

12.00-1.00: Dave

1.00-2.00 Carl and Maria

2.00 - end: Grumpy gits

Safe trip if you're travelling, see you later

WOW Joan you must be really pleased with that turn out? THE BEST NIGHT at Grumpy's to date!!! Loads of friends I haven't seen in a long while, great to catch up. It's true what was said, everyone enjoyed the night, you could tell with the big smiles on everyone's faces. :D Really enjoyed Col Denham's spot, shame I only caught last half. Saying that EVERYONE'S spot was superb  This night will be talked about for a long time to come. Can't wait for the next instalment. Just hope Lou is ok? She looked like she had overdone the "enjoyment" bit. Thanks Joan for allowing us to help celebrate your special day xx :hatsoff2:

I’d planned to make the trip to Runcorn for Grumpy Soul for quite some time but had never got round to actually going. Partly this was because it is normally a night that finishes at 4am, which means that you really need to book a b&b or hotel unless you have driven there, and personally I wouldn’t want to drive back down south after a soul night. So I’d just put it on the list of things to get round to doing.

However my friend Billywhizz of the 100 Club came to my rescue. He asked me if I fancied going after Christmas, it was going to be a celebration of Jumping Joan’s 50th birthday and it was a 2am finish. I was most happy to take him up on his kind offer. So I left home in London on 27 December, went to Liverpool Street station and travelled via two trains to Norwich, where Billy picked me up and off we went. Here I’d like to thank Billy for driving me there, it was a long and tiring drive with some holdups due to “incidents” on the roads, and the sat nav packed up, but luckily he’d also got his son’s one with him, don’t know what would have happened otherwise.

We got there at about 9pm, the joint was jumping as they say and we were lucky to get a couple of seats. The birthday girl greeted us, fortunately Billy had got a birthday card for her, I usually forget that sort of thing.

As I’ve intimated above the venue was busy, with quite a few of my friends attending which was nice for a catch up. Musically I’d describe it as a “proper Northern Soul night”. A mix of tempos, some R&B, a little Crossover and 70s, but predominately 60s, both medium and uptempo. Rarities were played, for example the Prophets’ Just One Gold Piece, the Four Dynamics’ Things A Lady Ain’t Supposed To Do and the Scott Brothers’ Running Around, but plenty of other perhaps better known tunes but not too many “top 100 “ records. I didn’t hear any funky tunes which may have come as a relief to some. I’m not sure who all the DJs were but they did a good job and the dance floor was busy. The floor was okay but a tiny bit of talc did help. The sound was good and that is really the most important thing. Bar prices were okay as well, especially after London prices at some venues.

Although Joan wasn’t on the DJ roster she did the last 20 or 30 minutes playing mainly uptempo Northern records like Shing A Ling and A Little Togetherness. The night ended at about 2.15 but it took ages for us to get out of Runcorn due to road works and sat nav problems but we got back to Norwich at about  8am. I had a sleep at Billy’s house and got the trains back to London, got indoors at 6.30pm. A long journey but worth it, I will return to Grumpy Soul some time in 2016, I’d recommend it if you enjoy a good Northern night that doesn’t play the obvious.

Thanks to Joan for organising the night which was free, and to Billy for doing the driving, he’s got a lot more patience than I would have had.

A wonderful gesture in free admission (Personally I'd pay double to get in this time as the last one musically was one of the best I've been too in a long time!!)

Maybe have a whip round on the night for some charity?? (maybe Joan to choose as her birthday???)

Just a thought.

I'll be there with bells on.

Oh, and just because of Mrs Livesey's advancing years, does she think she can leave herself off the DJ roster? Pah! That'll be right

Directions from M6 avoiding bridges and all that faff

Righto, in an attempt to save some of you from circumnavigating Runcorn (as we've done ourselves in the past, several times), this is the way I'd go:

1. M6

2. M56 to Chester

3. Take exit to Preston Brook / Daresbury A56 (jct 11 off M56 I think it is)

4. Drop down hill, pass technology park on left then Beefeater pub on your right

5. Stay on and follow road up to end and round to right

6. Stay in right hand lane at give way then turn left onto A533 expressway

7. Stay on A533 (i.e. do not turn off) and take exit slip for Halton Brow / Halton Lea

8. Left at bottom of slip onto Boston Ave

9. First right onto Halton Rd (there's a chapel thing, usually with a big sign) on the corner

10. On Halton Road, pass pub, co-op and chippy on your right. Club is on your right about 1/4 miles further down (grassy banks just before entrance)

That works for us every time (somehow ).

Look forward to seeing loads of good friends and having a belting night!

Merry Christmas

CALAMITY !!!!!

The Ginger T lookalike stripogram has been gazumped by another promoter!

But don't worry Phil after lengthy negotiations with his charismatic manager Bob I have secured a very able replacement in the shape ( or shape's) of Robbo! for the princely sum of fifteen quid but Bob drove a hard bargain and we have to abide by the following terms , prepayment via paypal, no santa Claus mankini's, he doesn't have to take his baseball cap off and we provide the baby oil !

Whatcha  think before I click  pay now ?

Hey Phil

I've paid Bob the £15.00 fee and now he tells me that Robbo is flatly refusing to wear a coppers uniform, or a tarzan outfit, the only outfit he'll wear has to be based around a pair of khaki shorts !!!

Looks as if Joan's gonna get the world's first 'Lofty' from "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" lookalike stripogram !!!

I wonder where Bob's gonna find a pith helmet at such short notice from ? :wicked:

All set up and sounding great.

We encountered some roadworks into Runcorn. If you follow the cones it'll take you onto the Weston Point Expressway and then Bridgewater Expressway, this will bring you back round. Take Runcorn Town Hall exit, turn right, then first right onto Halton Road

Safe journey everyone x

Last nights Grumpy was as good as it gets. From when I got there about 9.20pm to be suitably greeted by the birthday girl herself to when I left about 2am everything was superb, Musically  it was up there with anything that I have heard anywhere for a long time. couldn't pick out any particular DJ as they all contributed

People wise it was a collection of this countries finest from every cross section of the soul night/nighter scene from the local's ( loads of my old mates ) to people who had travelled from all over the country. Shame I couldn't get to catch up with everyone that I wanted too. It was one of those nights when the time just flew by. Big and special thanks again to everyone involved

Thanks so much to everyone who came last night, some braving motorway nightmares, pestilence and famine (and half of bloody Runcorn coned-off). Thanks also to the great mates who, as ever, played a good mix of quality records all night. Suffice to say, the place was rammed and I think the birthday girl enjoyed it. Jobs a good un

We're on with dates for 2016 and will return to the usual later finish of course. We also hope to secure the services of more quality guests of the same ilk as those who've done us proud over the last four and a bit years.

Thanks again for all your support and here's to a great 2016

Phil

Just want to say thanks to everyone for coming to our little do last night, what a turnout and what an atmosphere. A room full of friends, loads of smiling faces (not least my own), what more can you ask for

Thanks also for your wishes, cards and gifts - was taken by surprise at midnight by Lou and the presentation of your amazing generosity, was quite emotional which was evident by my short (but extremely heart felt) words

Big up for the DJs - Phil, Dave, Col, Kev, Carl and Maria - who all did an absolutely amazing job. The music was awesome and the floor rammed all night

From setting up, to the impromptu pre kick-off fish supper with Lou and Dave until Phil dropped me off 16 hours after picking me up, I had the best birthday ever. Special thanks to Phil who had to endure the stress for both of us last night as I had the night off  :D

Dates for next year to follow as soon as we sort it with the club but in the meantime, happy new year you lovely people xx

Top night and a worthy celebration for Joan's Big Birthday Bash!!!

We arrived at 8.20 and the place was already filling up,packed to the rafters by the finish and Yep the Runcorn expressway diversions is not for the faint hearted but well worth the effort. Think musically all the bases were covered all aimed firmly at the dancefloor.

Looking forward to more of the same in 2016!!!

Fantastic night as ever - brilliant turn out and atmosphere and the same high quality sounds as expected from the Grumpy faithful. Great night to celebrate Joan's birthday

The Runcorn road works weren't too much of a problem - I don't think I've left Runcorn the same route twice when attending Grumpy Soul, so last night was no different. I did manage to completely miss my junction for Edinburgh and happily drove towards Glasgow for miles before I noticed though....what a twat!

So the question I've been asking myself since Saturday is why has it taken me so long to get my arse into gear & come over to bandit country & visit Grumpy's???It certainly won't be happening again as it was top night musically & atmosphere with the added bonus of seeing Joan's beaming smile all night as she celebrated her 21st  :D

The only slight problem I have is I can't believe the lovely Joan knows that many nutters (not seen that many in one room for quite awhile ) so I think those reprobates must have come to see Phil :wicked:

Cheers

Martyn

PS On the way home I had the pleasure of visiting parts of Runcorn that people who live in Runcorn don't know exists..........bloody diversion
