  1. Hi Rob and Eddy. You've been away a little too long!! Looking forward to tonight...see you on the floor. Mike.
  2. wow! what a night!! without a doubt one of the best soul nights i've been to in years. fantastic, hugely popular tunes all night. 2 excellent sets from the legendary Mr Winstanley. i can't remember a single tune that had less than about 6 or 8 people on the floor (none of those embarassing floor-clearers) and probably 80% of the tunes had about 20 or 30 of us dancing (or trying to - it was flipping hot!!) Bit of a pity about the bouncing floors knocking the needles about - but that was just down to everyones' enthusiasm to get on the floor to celebrate those superb tunes, right up to Russ's very last track. Not one of the people i spoke to had a single bad thing to say about the night. top, TOP night. many thanks Jimmy, Kev and everyone else concerned. next dates please!!! That night was what Northern is all about to me. Great stuff. Mike.
  3. really looking forward to this one. cheers for the tickets Jimmy - we will see you tomorrow. dancing shoes at the ready! some carstairs, then a touch of mickey moonshine please!
  4. haha...all sweet SWEET words!! great stuff! they're even beautiful to read...let alone to hear!
  5. think you called it spot on there Jimmy....go straight in with the hard stuff! we all love a stormer. and thanks for the breather bit!! when you get to our age it's not as easy to dance for an hour solid as it once was!! Yeah..it's a pity about the previous attendance...guess you never know what a good thing you've got until it's gone....or something. if you get that podcast sorted let us all know. you going to Capone's this Sat? if so, may see you there. Mike.
  6. Cheers to Rob, Jimmy and Eddie for chucking some GREAT tunes out on Saturday at the LAST Northern do to be held at Saks basement in Southend. i can't believe it's over after all this time (15 years according to Rob) but the boys did themselves proud on the night - fantastic stuff!! Beggin' filled the floor as usual, and i can't remember the last time i heard Mickey Moonshine's hughly underplayed classic "name it, you got it". Superb! i never knew you could get that many people on that dance floor - luckily there were people spinning around everywhere in that basement on saturday, using all available floor space. best soul-do i've been too in AGES and my shirt was sticking to my back for the rest of the night as proof. nice one boys....see you all soon. elsewhere, of course. Mike Line.
  7. Hi James. Yeh, Scottish Mick has a soul night on 22/April and 17/June at the Barhouse, just round the corner to the Bassment. Wednesdays are no good for me personally, but i'm hoping he gets enough interest to warrant starting up an alniter in Chelmsford on some Fridays/Saturdays in the near future. We shall need to wait and see. Thanks for the reply...i'm glad you took my review in the benign way it had been intended. And you know what....you're right...it DOESN'T mention "Northern" anywhere in your ads. fair point - my mistake! Thanks again, Mike.
  8. sorry...i obviously went to the wrong night... i read about this soul do on this soul-source webby so thought i'd wander along as i'm only 10 miles away...which for a northerner is just round the corner, and i'm afraid i have to tell you i didn't enjoy it. it had been advertised as a Northern Soul do, though i admit there was a mention of "funk" in the ads. Little did i realise it would be almost exclusively funk. i'm happy that people are not all the same and love it when people are dedicated to any non-mainstream interests, like we Northern Soul devotees, but prior to midnight there had been only about 30 Nothern tracks played....and i was there from about 9:10 pm so i know i didn't miss much. And as of 11:45, there was NO Northern at all. i left at about 1:15 am as i couldn't take it anymore (i don't like funk/jazz funk, and also don't understand why the Funk guys dance a bit, then stand on the dance floor chatting, waiting for something else to dance to. if you're not dancing, you really shouldn't be on the floor, especially in a place with a dance floor that small). i also saw the mods there, who will normally dance to most stuff...but they left even before me! so, as i said, sorry to put a downer on things, but you did ask for bad reviews as well as good. I shan't be attending this night again (and i'm sure you're not that bothered about that) but would ask for a little more clarity when advertising other nights so we know what to expect. It was close by, and it was cheap...those are my only upsides i'm afraid. I'm really not trying to be petty, each to their own etc, but i had been expecting a Northern night. anyway, all the best to you Funk boys...Keep The Faith (however that translates in the Funk world!). Thanks for listening. Mike.
  9. sounds like a great night you have planned there rob...count me in! i've been to this venue before...it's a really smart place...surprised they are letting all us northern monkeys in to scuff their floor up for a few hours! see you there mate. mike.
