sorry...i obviously went to the wrong night...
i read about this soul do on this soul-source webby so thought i'd wander along as i'm only 10 miles away...which for a northerner is just round the corner, and i'm afraid i have to tell you i didn't enjoy it.
it had been advertised as a Northern Soul do, though i admit there was a mention of "funk" in the ads. Little did i realise it would be almost exclusively funk.
i'm happy that people are not all the same and love it when people are dedicated to any non-mainstream interests, like we Northern Soul devotees, but prior to midnight there had been only about 30 Nothern tracks played....and i was there from about 9:10 pm so i know i didn't miss much. And as of 11:45, there was NO Northern at all. i left at about 1:15 am as i couldn't take it anymore (i don't like funk/jazz funk, and also don't understand why the Funk guys dance a bit, then stand on the dance floor chatting, waiting for something else to dance to. if you're not dancing, you really shouldn't be on the floor, especially in a place with a dance floor that small). i also saw the mods there, who will normally dance to most stuff...but they left even before me!
so, as i said, sorry to put a downer on things, but you did ask for bad reviews as well as good. I shan't be attending this night again (and i'm sure you're not that bothered about that) but would ask for a little more clarity when advertising other nights so we know what to expect.
It was close by, and it was cheap...those are my only upsides i'm afraid. I'm really not trying to be petty, each to their own etc, but i had been expecting a Northern night.
anyway, all the best to you Funk boys...Keep The Faith (however that translates in the Funk world!).
Thanks for listening.
Mike.
