I don't claim to know anything about the 'scene' as I have far too many other interests to claim 'Northern' alone as a way of life. But... perhaps power has been passed from the early days in which we relied on the DJ to serve up new soul sounds, to the new fangled internet age where everyone is a DJ and you don't need a venue to listen to/discover or to buy a soul tune. The crowd is all powerful. I would argue to my last breath that there is a difference between 'listening' and really 'hearing' a tune and that there's a magic that happens when a record is 'heard' at a night.... That said - just like the pub scene and live bands - you stick a playlist/performance/podcast on the internet and might get 1000 listens... perhaps ten times the attendance at the gig/night.

It's a personal thing and I can only explain my feelings, not what others should(nt) do. I have a thing about music played on vinyl and for me a knackered vinyl copy is always better than a stream or MP3. All of my records will get played, I would never buy a tune to keep locked away - if I can get to hear a tune I love on vinyl, by buying a poorer quality record until I find an upgrade, then I'd take that over nothing. In the same process of thought - If I scratched a record I loved (horror) I would be gutted, but I wouldn't start looking for a new copy.
