  1. Richard Searling Book - Setting The Record Straight - Music & Memories From Wigan Casino 1973-1981 Before I start my review I dip into a cup of sadness and remember the funeral I attended of local legend Dave Owen who for some reason passed the time of day with me and I started thinking about the people who I feel have made an impact on so many and I have no idea why some of them suffer this fool but I am glad they do, Brent Howarth and I managed to sort a charity Allnighter for BLESMA the Limbless Veterans and in doing so I get to hear from Brent some amazing stories of what I will read in Richards book but onto that in a moment, back to the funeral and I am sat talking about music and the evolution of Northern Soul with John Manship who I hope will publish his book soon, I want to “name drop” a few people because Richard references the many characters who all pushed this music along and he is right and does capture the , dare I say love, in this book without over egging the pudding. The book oozes respect and I kind of want to acknowledge a few things that may be widely known and may not, Stafford and the “Stafford Sound” gets given the lion’s share of changing the impact and delivery of Northern Soul but it was Richard Searling who dared to be that little bit , no that big bit of different at the last part of the Casino giving a different slant and one that certainly made me go “oooooooh!” and I wanted to get that out there and also credit Richard for being The Godfather of Modern Soul. The book… Richard has managed to pull a trick , he has accomplished taking what at first glance could be a boring list and turned it into a personal , emotional account of not just matrix numbers and price tags but what the record meant to him and it is here that I am charmed and impressed , it is sweet and innocent as the love of music is , he also includes the cold facts but does so without losing the “spirit” of the music and that is often lacking when faced with a cold calculated list of records , you honestly want to hear those track as you read and tap into Richard Searling and it is here that I think this book stand taller than most. I know that Wigan Casino also came with a cup of pain for Richard and you can read between the lines but there is also great restraint without leaving the reader to guess, I shall leave you, the reader to find this yourself, you will not be disappointed, and the intrigue is justified I promise. I keep going back over and over some of the vignettes Richard writes about his records and marry them up to my own list of favourites and it is a joy to understand how he felt when hearing that track and deciding if to play what was going to become so precious and I felt it an insight to the heart and soul of Richard Searling. The book can be purchased It’s available now in soft back at £24.99 plus P+P from www.raresoulvinyl.co.uk I can’t see any lover of music not enjoying this be it a Northern Soul fan or not, the approach and intelligent detail along with the emotion makes it a must have read Simon Cuerden Imber Boy

DERBY'S EXECUTIVE ALL-NIGHTER SOUL CREW - DERBY SAT 18 MAR 2017 LONDON ROAD DERBY DE1 2QQ Dave Evison Jordan Wilson Dick Crop Ian James Daz Dakin Tony Clarke Ethan Howarth Shelia Glyn Sisson's This is a new boy on the block but the brainchild of a group of regular Allnighter goers who are omnipresent on the British Allnighter Scene, the venue closed at 0500hrs due to the local council wishing to test the water with a promise of later finishes so watch this space! I’ll do my best to give a clinical review but as with most things my opinion must be taken with a pinch of salt as my wish list for an Allnighter may not be the same as others. OK the concept, the Derby lads want to provide a hard corps Allnighter for Allnighter people so they have set out a strict door policy to ensure those children of the night are catered for in an environment that sits well. This is always a difficult process especially in a centre of town venue and the door staff where joined by the Derby Lads to “pick” which is a normal door policy and one some promoters could learn from. The Queens Hall Derby. Located in the heart of Derby City Centre, The Queens Hall is a locally listed building with a grand entrance offering exquisite facilities. Believed to be built in 1876 the building is perfect for a Nighter and ticks every box, easy and top tip for future visits is simply follow the signs for the Train Station, loads of parking in surrounding area and lots of pubs and if you fancied a meal some great mouth watering restaurants right by the venue! I think it was £10, you had to be there before the Midnight Hour and the door staff and ladies got you in with the minimum of fuss! Loved the ambience of the place, the sound system was spot on but for next time a better shock absorber system needs to be though out as the records jumped a couple of times when the crowd where giving it large, easy to rectify. The bar is tactically placed so there is no bumping and grinding near the dance floor by those at the bar, at the other end and near the stage you could get a hot or cold snack and the bar was ready and eager to dish out ice cold free tap water to those doing the do on the dance floor. There where no Beer Monsters or drunks piss balling about and you have to give the Derby lot credit for thinking things through, remember this is a fledgling Allnighter and there is a short cut to every thing in life except experience so I duff my cap to those who provided a safe environment for us to chuck our selves about without having to look over our shoulders for drunks. Musically, now it is here that I shall stray into the weeds and give my opinion for what it is worth… bad side first, the two DJ’s who steered the ship at about 0100hrs did not empathise with the dancers, well me, I want thumpers at that time , I wish to feel my blood boil and attack that dance floor like a man possessed , what I don’t want is mid to down tempo at that time as it kills my buzz kill and any DJ who says “Lets slow it down for a minute” should be executed! I did speak to the Derby lads and gave my opinion, the dance floor was full so I am not certain if I am right but if I am to go back to this venue then I want to ride that roller coaster at that time but like I said , horses for courses. What did blow my socks off and fire my rockets was Dave Evison who knows his craft like a wizard, Jordan Wilson is in the accent and if you haven’t heard this young man spin then you are missing a treat, delight of the night was hearing Ethan Howarth come of age playing some dreamy records with a vigour that was infectious and I did get my Mojo back and danced my self dizzy! Daz Dakin reminded me just how superb unknown music can be and he pulls some superb rabbits out of his hat on a regular basis, Dick Crop set the pace during the earlier spots but I think his hard work was undermined by two DJ’s who didn’t inspire me. Now that is my personal view, I travel, so do we all, what I want is stormers to set the pace but I appreciate that there are different tastes. To summarise, I will be back to this venue, like all good things it will take time to find its flavour, the bed rock is there and there is a real determination and enthusiasm, “a Nighter for Nighter People by Nighter People”. Thank you to all involved. I found the atmosphere friendly and welcoming. Crystal ball time … I think this is going to be the place to be!

  5. Kings Hall Stoke July 16th 2016 I like many, I am no stranger to the Kings Hall Allnighter; if you have never been then you simply must as it is a truly spectacular event that stands alone within the Allnighter Scene, the cathedral like venue gives a blasting experience like no other and many compare this with Wigan Casino for atmosphere and vibe, it is certainly an occasion and one that I hope will last for a very long time! Our party arrived early to a mass of Soulies who had come from near and far with a healthy smattering of the Scottish Posse, always good to see those who have travelled so far to do this venue. It was a hot summer’s night, some say that the Nighters are a winter sport but the evening saw very high numbers and a real sense of party atmosphere was present. The queue had faces old and new, seasoned veterans and first timers all looking forward to those doors opening. I wish I could capture what happens when those doors open and you pass through the entrance into the vast dance hall with that sprung polished dance floor, the stage, the balcony and that sound system that completely lifts you off, gone are the stresses of normal life and you enter into a night time world of dance and celebration of all things Northern Soul. The dance floor fills immediately, contrary to popular belief the bar area works well and there are people who just wish to have a great evening and a great evening it is! I stand for a moment drinking it all in then it is into Windsor Suite where John n Julie take this alternative room into a different atmosphere giving the dancers a glimpse of new and underplayed, Modern, Seventies, Oldies and rare, there are no beard strokers and the room is not about DJ’s playing to each other or showing off their record boxes, it is about that dance floor yet the quality line is higher than a high thing! Julie is so modest and I do not think she actually knows just how good she is, the dance floor reacts at her selected spins, the tempo rises and the music is funky, fun, fresh, exciting and infectious! There are always one or three surprises, the dancers are up for it and that is very apparent and sets the tone for the Windsor Suite and the DJ’s raise their game and this in turn is both appreciated and spurs this room upwards and onwards. Andy 'Tats' Taylor takes to the decks and it is a joy, I can see that he is loving every second of it and each spin is welcomed and enjoyed, Ted Massey is on next and complete smashes it out of the park, Soul Sam takes to the decks and gives a master class of introducing new and unheard dancefull soul with two brand new outings that send the dance floor wild! The Kings Hall Allnighter really does give two for the price of one, you get two very different and very high quality Allnighters both in the same location that provides real choice and allows you to sample two very different sides of the Allnighter Scene and that is a clever trick to pull off and one that sees me going back to the Kings Hall Allnighter time and time again. Thank you to Kev and Team

Kings Hall Stoke Allnighter Feb 20 2016 OK first things first, Kev Roberts’s eats babies, Kings Hall Stoke is full of beer monsters throwing ale all over the dance floor and the music is rubbish. OK now that we have the preconceptions out of the way I shall precede with my revue of this Allnighter that is celebrating its twentieth anniversary, the first Kings Hall Stoke was 1996! Way before most where on the internet and the landscape was very different back then with no social media and a fledgling Soul Source, to be honest it is a miracle that any Allnighter became successful back then but I digress. Saturday evening starts with us pulling up to the car park, the sight of that queue still flicks my switch, I was only a visitor to Wigan Casino, I missed that and here I can experience a cathedral of Northernsoul, if I have to be brutally honest the baggy pants brigade have pretty much changed and there is a more dare I say genuine Allnighter fan enjoying what I feel is a very special experience. My routine is to enter the main room to say my hello’s and I do enjoy meeting friends old and new, the environment has mellowed over the years, there is a skip in the step and a real feeling of welcome, fun and smiles, a great atmosphere and the people who are there are all pretty much focused on the music and dance, I think the only poser there last night may have been me? Into The Windsor Suite and John is cranking it up playing some off the beaten track sounds and setting the tone for the evening, The Windsor Suite is a Nighter within a Nighter and gives another dimension to what is happening in the Main Room, I find it exciting and unpredictable and dripping with quality, there is a trifle of flavours laying out to be enjoyed with every year visited giving the dancer an opportunity to enjoy a full spectrum of sounds and decades played by some very well informed DJ’s, Julie takes over from John and my night begins, the dance floor is small and cosy, you can do your own thing without having to care. Musically The Windsor Suite has to be up there with the very best offering the dancer a real experience of rare and underplayed dance with many pleasant surprises to boot. The punters drift in and out enjoying both rooms, some stay longer than others and there are regulars who spur the DJ’s along to play their discs, all ages are present with no hang ups, it is an event to be savoured and I certainly do. Carl & Maria Willingham dazzled me, Ted steps up and the quality line is extremely high, The Nuclear Weapon is Soul Sam who is firing on all four cylinders and that is a pleasure of the highest order. The small hours for me are then spent in the Main Room dancing to those tracks we all cut our teeth on, I love it! One day this may all be gone, if you haven’t been then go, if you don’t go because of some misconception then you should revisit, I think most of the criticisms have been about the etiquette but I would suggest that thinks have changed, they always do and there has been an evolution at Stoke, I will certainly be back.
  7. The last time I heard any racial comments was at Prestatyn year before last and aimed at a wedding party I was with, the comments made by a couple were not passed onto the bride and groom nor the main body of the wedding for fear of people getting very upset .

  10. Northern Soul the Film a review : Before I stroke the key boards I am reminded of the emotive pie fight “SoulBoy” caused and I do not wish to be the recipient of a Soulie "fatwa" so I shall proceed with caution ………… I managed to get tickets today, Friday’s Matinee in Sheffield’s The Showroom, a cinema that shows a lot of independent films, I walked towards the cinema and noticed that the poster for Northern Soul was not displayed outside, bad start I thought but I spoke to both the Box Office and the Manager and they told me that they hadn’t seen such a response for a film for a very long time so this was encouraging, I took my seat and noticed the cinema was not exactly full but it was a Friday Afternoon, the audience was middle aged couples and about thirty youngsters who I presumed as students? OK onto the film, deep breath and I’ll do the negative first, lighting, or should I say lack of lighting, the film is dark. I am in little doubt that this was intentionally done to give it a bit of grit and earthiness which I totally get and this works excellently in films that are edgy and dark but in Northern Soul it kinda gets lost and becomes a bit unnecessarily and becomes a distraction and to be honest there are often moments where cast members are lost to an over use of filtering. Now depending on which description you read of this film you are left to ponder whether this is a “film about the Northern Soul Scene with a story line” or a “Story line with a Northern Soul backdrop” It came across to me as a story of the drugs scene within the Northern Soul Scene and I was left with a furrowed brow to see the intravenous usage given the spot light which puzzled me as the film struggled a bit to decide what direction the story was going and flattened off before sprinting off to tie everything up which was a little lazy. Ok that is the negative, now the positive. I’ll start with the casting, what a triumph! Seriously, who would have thought the line up would, could and did deliver such convincing characters, the scrip writing was faultless with lots of layers, humour and clever dialogue of which I enjoyed immensely. Our two young main players work excellently together with a real chemistry, kudos to the director, the supporting cast create the seventies and the costume and design is joyful and you immerse yourself into the period effortlessly, the attention to detail is phenomenal! Credibility is in abundance whilst watching the dancers and you do not get any whiff of cheese, the music needs no comment from me but the selection and sound flows like a river, sounds easy but each track is appropriate and perfectly balanced and placed like an engineering artist, again this gives the film an oomph factor that I believe will be appreciated by any audience, you get a real feeling that the extras gave their souls and we must remember that they are youngsters recreating a phenomena that is Northernsoul and they smash it! Worthy of note is the dynamics between each of the characters, I felt that the story line was a bit poor but it was delivered powerfully and with great skill, I loved the edginess of the drug dealing Southerner who beguiles in a true anti hero way, you feel as if you know all of the characters and I can empathise with all. In summery I enjoyed the film, it is a flawed diamond but a diamond none the less, would I recommend the film YES YES YES YES YES Get to the cinema, this is the one to watch.
  11. Whoops didn't see this thread, I'll post my review in, Mike can you delete the other
  12. I saw these in Meadowhall and my heart leapt like a salmon! I went into the shop to buy them only to learn they were only available in bird’s sizes which is like totally illegal or summit and sexist against Jazz Funk and cool boys like me! These shoes were the coolest fookin thing on the dance floor and I have now taken to bandaging my feet up on a night time like them Japanese birds so I can like fit into them and ting
