  1. I feel like I have lost a brother, so saddened by this news. One of the purest souls you could ever hope to have as a friend. You could always have a reasoned debate with Win, he had time for everyone, very diplomatic, articulate in his words, and had great empathy for the less fortunate. We shall all miss him dreadfully he enriched so many peoples lives. Carms (lollo) xx bless you Win RIP

Well it was my first visit to Go Go , to say I was overwhelmed by the place is an understatement. It was a mega journey for us as Nige had played at the H&J in Doncaster on friday night . The journey took us around 4.5 hours so we were a little jaded when we arrived around 4.30pm However after the benefit of an hours sleep and a shower and as the car pulled into that sleepy little dark side street and we saw the most amazing building , this being the old prison all in its cobblestone finery one got a power surge that could almost let the imagination run riot, the air felt slightly damp and foggy I couldn't help thinking a red coat might draw arms at any minute .... The place was just so atmospheric, it had such charisma , mind blowing ! It was just as exciting when we entered, the sound system is up there , one of the best to my ears. I guess this being a live music venue it has to be robust and powerful. I was captured by the projector for some time displaying great images on the high turrets , what looked like a caged Aretha watching down on us , the images on the cobblestone were just fabulous it was an amazing show of artistic flare. Add to that the kind of music we were privileged to hear the place was so highly charged you couldn't help but be moved by the venues uniqueness , a breath of fresh air to my ears having been witness in the last few years to what is in the main a retro soul scene that has unfortunately forgotten how to be adventurous and innovative in its play , this small club was like walking into heavens gates. I didn't know 80% of what I heard, felt quite the novice to be honest , so out of the loop. I loved the first Dj's type of play , he played my kinda funk Marva Whitney Spanky Wilson type stuff , then it was followed by Andrea who lifted it up another notch introducing more male hard vocals mixed in > I turned to Nige and said my god I wouldn't want to follow these two, they have been so brave in their play thinking Nige would play quality , but known quality , what was expected by many basically. How wrong could I have been I have never seen Nige play , like he played at Go Go , my god he was on fire, surprising many of us at his choice of play and he absolutely loved it , you could see his pleasure and excitement , reaching eagerly for the next sound , feeling like the box had expanded not reduced , he was hungry for this one How could I have missed him collecting these tracks that I didn't know he had? Has my head been in the sand ? Dean thank you so much for the invitation to visit a club that you must be really proud of, what an achievement , such freedom of play and such an accepting audience. what I call a curve ball crowd , excited by the anything that has a good beat. I stood back and watched those younger people bouncing , feeling the music like I wish I could , unfortunately age prohibits me from moving so vigorously. So many on the soul Zone it was An Ace night ! The Dj's were all awesome their sets fitted together like the fingers on the same black leather glove , I loved the total punchy unpredictability of the night. Sandra Richardson was just amazing to hear on that sound system and it lifted me so high , "you got me catching a bus when I own a car".... what a lyric ! It drws parallel thought ...Living in Madchester where I have so much quality at my disposal ...why would I travel to Bristol ? ..... It would have to be exceptional ... Yes this place stands alone ....never experienced a night like it...you had to be there ...you had to feel it to know what I mean. Credit to the promoters in their selection of players for this night. If you get a chance ........Go Go Go , your time won't be wasted

  11. Never went to Wigan so my mind was open on this one.Having heard and read many stories about the fun aspect of anticipating the "happening" by those that went, for example making excuses to their parents, swapping clothes to look cool, planning coach trips, meeting friends from all over the country, hitching rides, jumping trains, lack of appetites to mums Sunday dinner, the film could have been much lighter. It felt to me a little on the blue side. A bit more humour would have made a good film turn into a great film. I know some did have the darker experiences of drug use at its most extream leval of needle use but I formed the impression that they were a minority.I just had a general feeling that the mass had a much lighter experience. Also came away thinking would I want my family and non soul friends seeing this portrayal and feeling a little concerned at the opinions they might form when making comparisons to how people generally soul today? Maybe expectations were too high ? I certainly feel it will not bring the anticipated rush of new blood through the doors.I Don't want to offend anyone it's my honest opinion as an outsider looking in. I think the fact it brought many from far and wide should have been ememphasised much more. I would Love to hear a complete novice to the scene as we know it have their say on it. Again I will say a very well made film and a great attention to detail has been made however more humour would have added a greater experience to the viewer in my view.
  12. Thursday night took us to Greenwich London where we met up with a few friends to have one of those privileged soul experiences that stay with you for a very long time. It was to see the O’jays perform at “Indigo” a satellite venue contained within the massive O2 arena. Entering the O2 is so spectacular it feels like you are entering into a giant space ship full of individual pleasure domes with unique mood lighting resulting in an ambiance of much excitement and great expectation. It’s surrounded with some very artistic buildings sculptures and wide avenues to herd the people forward into the enormous cavern of night pleasures creating a “build” in anticipation of what is ahead. The concert venue was actually very intimate and had a sort of night club feel to it. It had what is commonly known as stalls this being a standing or dancing area and then several tiers of seating up above. We were in the seating area looking down on the stage. Being honest I would have to say it felt a little quiet to me, it could be that I am used to being in the stalls at concerts or it could have been that this being the first night of their tour and it being a Thursday it meant that there was going to be a few empty seats as most would have selected Friday or Saturday night as their preferred ticket options. Ahead of the performance there was a Dj warming the clubbers up with a selection of Philadelphia type sounds of which some enticed a few to actually start dancing in the upper balcony as well as the lower stalls. We did see a few familiar faces from all over the country that we knew. I must say I felt a little concerned, this being their first night I felt that they may have felt a little underwhelmed at not seeing a capacity crowd. It could be that my own expectations were too high as I wanted the best of welcomes for them on their first night , as it turned out my concerns were a bit silly a few empty seats did not detract them from their performance at all. The guys being “professionals” came out and gave us their very best and delivered every title with such perfection with so much ease that you could be forgiven for forgetting how old these guys actually are, their experience in performing over the years was self-evident capitalizing in capturing every ear in the house. Their moves on stage were choreographed to perfection they looked so amazing. The youngest member has been with the two elders for twenty years alone, and the two elders have known each other from being seven years of age. They are now in their seventies I think you will agree that is some achievement, true brothers of soul. With regards to the actual performance for me it was the slower tempo tunes which really showcased how each vocalist had perfected the training of each voice over the years to deliver the most perfect of soul marriages resulting in one unifying sound that embraced your affection to almost make you feel like crying, the emotion displayed by each one was so moving. In fact I would have to say each one of them as an individual voice could have made it in their own right. The crowd lapped the songs up often standing and dancing in their seats many shouted their favorite tracks, we also had a few laughs at Walters sexy delivery , well with a voice like that I bet he could charm the birds from the trees. The two hours went by so quickly taking us up and down the with a roller coaster of tempos ending with a fabulous finale being the funky sounding “For the love of money” We all went home happy and wanting more which is how every true professional wants to leave a stage. I heard the Friday night spawned a capacity crowd and the performance was as polished as the night before.
