IMHO the Ritz in 76 was the greatest thing since sliced bread (or for oldies fans tomatoes) mixing the best new soul (and non-soul) releases, excellent new discoveries and great oldies. If the catholic music taste it embraced had spread out to Wigan it could have meant a thriving scene would have continued. By thriving I mean a scene where younger people came in to replace those leaving due to family commitments etc. Turning it's back on new releases was a fatal mistake shown by the ever rising average age of those interested in the music.

One of the really bad things to happen was the mod revival (which the Casino embraced with special mod niters), which was really a contradiction in terms as mod is short for modernism which looks forward not back. Northen of the seventies was a continuing mod scene in the true sense and the so called revival derailed modernism.

Today old Northern tracks, old NY Disco, Jazz Funk and the cream of new releases can be heard on Solar radio. To me they carry forward the true spirit of  Northern Soul (and the Weekender scene of the South) that inspired my teens and twenties and therefore truly "Keep the Faith"

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

yes I've always had similar thoughts on the retro / mod revival that it was a contradicton within terms (ie backward looking instead of 'modern'). Not that I minded some of the clothes etc. Altho I noted at the time that the revivalists seemed to put it all together alot more shabbier a way than the first time around.

& I note that Djs like Tony Blackburn & Robbie Vincent were hip to Motown & 60's Soul when it was new but were also able to follow the thread thru to Disco, Funk, jazz funk etc. down the line of soul...

Keep the faith indeed.

The flipside of "Young Hearts" is called 'I Know" and has always had Northern potential to my ears.

Played by Richard Searling as a new release at the Casino, Simon. Good record.

I'm loving this thread.
The same old predjuces keep trotting out (why bring Take That into it? Interesting that their three records that relate in any way to this thread are "It Only Takes A Minute" which Levine DIDN'T produce, "I Found Heaven" which was co produced with Billy Griffin (Miracles) who had a VERY large involvment in it and "Could It Be Magic" which was styled after Donna Summers earlier disco version, but was only a hit for Take That in it's non Levine remixed form and which has a Northern-ish beat) Personally I think the link through Early 60's R&B-Motown/Northern-Philly International-NewYork-Disco-House is very obvious.
Whether an individual LIKES those different strains (and the offshoots) is another matter. But to deny they exist would be strange. Define "Mod" for instance.
I never liked the "Dr Buzzard" stuff much- but I can see where it fitted in. Play some of the De-Lite Crown Heights Affair 45's next to "Sunshower". Melody, lyric, feel, vocal, danceability, tempo, beat, production quality, atmosphere - they're all essential qualities for the type of music we're talking about which is essentially pop music made (or sung) by Black people. Thats why rap rarely come into it here, although it is probably the purest form of BLACK music since real proper Funk or Reggae.

Didn't know that Tim.
"Young Hearts" is a very important record to me as it represents an important time in my life and one when I was just getting into Black dance stuff having mainly been into Rock And Roll before that.
I must have flipped the 45 over some time in 1979/80 (if I liked a 45 a lot then it often took a while to play the other side in case I didn't like it and it put me off the side I did like !) and "I Know" sounded 'Northern". I used to list every "Northern" record as I bought it. So "I Know" is record number 104 on that list between "Spring Rain" and The Dells "Your Song" on a UK 12" !

Gloria Gaynor's 'Searchin' has a similar feel.

No worries about take that - that was having a bit of a laugh (al be it @ Mr Levine's expense) - if ppl get pleasure from take that & all of the works mr Levine is associated with I don't have a problem with it.

My view is Mr Levine has given much support & contribution to soul or northern soul - whatever name you wish to give it - so he's intitled to try something diffferent or make records which aren't to my taste.

Going back to the Mod issues - again I have no problem with the ppl dressing up in this retro style - I knew many of them at the time & I was listening to much of the same music they were listening to. If ppl get pleasure from this it's all good with me - & it's understanderble when ppl are in their teens etc.

My view is I don't feel I have to wear a certain uniform to be able to listen to certain types of music.
& my point about the Mod revival being a contradiction I feel is valid, as alot of these ppl held the ideal of being Modern as central. Again it's no big deal it's just rather amusing.

Sorry if I alienate anyone here again - but yes i like some rap - Gil Scott Heron, Rakim, Last Poets, Mos def etc. - Not all but some.
Alot of what james Brown does could be considered rap -& as James sights himself - Louie Jorden was also a rapper of sorts...
That's just my taste - not saying its the best taste - just mine.

Much like the human race itself, music does tend to have a Black root.
In rap there is whole chapters of Latino rap that often gets forgotten also (Real Roxxane, Big Pun etc.)

PS Crown Height Affair "Far Out" is a fav of mine.

I've been playing their track "Melodies" to myself a lot recently. It took me a little while but once I got into it I couldn't get the tune out of my head. The vocal version is really horrible though. It's so twee it makes me nauseous. Luckily it's a voc/inst 45. The track is very much in the Dr Buzzurd/August Darnell vein. :whistling:
