We spent most of the weekend in the R&U room. What a series of stunning spots played by some very knowledgable DJs. I've just caught up on the playlists (thanks all for posting them) and I know why we hardly strayed. What I can't work out is why so many Soulies seem barely interested in these fabulous tunes. I'm not knocking the 'classic' Northern stuff, but isn't variety the spice of life? Exposing new material used to be what the Soul scene was all about. Each to their own, I suppose, but I am confused. Otherwise, well done to the organisers and all the DJs for a terrific weekend.
All the best to everybody we met. See you all again soon, I hope.

No problem Cunnie, it's one reason we go to Brid - there's always something different to listen (and dance) to. :D :( If Scarborough goes the same way, brilliant!

Must admit, I enjoyed playing there. R&B is another area where opportunities are a bit limited. If I'm invited back to Brid (or if you see me anywhere) come and say Hello. If I know you're around anywhere I'll do the same.

It is a strange engine indeed John, I always find that the Friday of any weekender in the main room is always the best for an Oldies blow-out. You can bet your bottom dollar that some records will be repeated 2 sometimes 3 times by the Saturday. I'm sure I heard You're Gonna Love My Baby twice in the same hour by Sunday. Some DJ's fear from straying outside the comfort zone i.e. Top 500 as playing tried and tested tunes discovered by big names over the decades will ensure they will be asked to play again. With some people spending a small fortune in recent years paying top whack for tunes keeps record dealers happy, thus setting up weekenders and asking as many DJs as possible then to DJ with the new purchases who will in turn bring as many friends to the weekender, like a pyramid I suppose, building it 'real high' Just a theory.

George Anderson.

Have a listen to this, I told some one who recently came back onto the scene that this was massive at the Casino! Popped it on Facebook for the Scarborough crowd to hear and it got some thumbs up, of course they have never heard the record before I know, as it is purely hype by me and a made up label and name from a acetate.

Where is if you say this tune below has never graced anyones decks on the scene, there will be no response and will be disgarded before really listeneing to its qualities as a really good soul record.

John i think many are interested but when many people have a choice they will and do float from room to room in the evening , IMHO it should all be mixed up in just the one room

I can't argue with that Rob. Proper across-the-board sessions sounds an excellent idea to me. I well remember the Polish Club in Sheffield. You never knew what you going to get on any night. It was a top venue. I have tried this though, and got slagged off by the 'traditionalists' (I may be being a little diplomatic here) for 'not keeping the faith' (whatever that is supposed to mean), whenever I strayed into rare or XOver or R&B, and certainly modern sounds. There is an element of intollerance, which is disappointing. I've had other DJs have a pop for the same reason. I personally don't like all these divisions. It's all Soul music in the end. I do worry that this intollerance may be causing DJs to narrow down their playlists, and that could be terminal for the scene eventually. It might be that I haven't been to enough of the right venues lately, but that's how it seems to be.

Interesting stuff George. Both these tunes are actually excellent (particularly the second, for me) however they came about. I've actually never heard either before, but I see your point. No doubt the discussion will go on.

With you all the way Rob. It's a real dilemma: if you don't keep enough of the people happy for enough of the time you risk killing the whole thing. Conversley I'm hearing more and more people complaining that they are getting bored with the same old tunes, especially when some might be played a number of times at any given event. I think fear of emptying the dancefloor is a massive problem. Perhaps more DJs need to adopt that same Polish Club 'play it and be damned' attitude. You never know what might result. From that point of view this discussion is relevant to all soul dos, including Scarborough. It'll be interesting to see how the next few years turn out. See you soon,

John think one of the probs some try way too hard to fill the floor, when really folks are pacing themselves and not dancing to every record they are still by enlarge enjoying the music.......... its because we are fast getting old duffers

Still not got around to putting my play list upPosted Image i enjoyed the chance to play some "Banging Oldies" but hope I included something thats not often heard as well-will wait for the flack when its posted. however doing a warm up spot on saturday evening suited me just fine this time The knee doesn't allow the carrying of the big box at the moment. Ouch-come on Dixon you should have offered to carry it !!

As for the venue terrific and the "Modern" side will be well catered for next year giving a wide base of musical choice, well done to several modern room regulars for actually attending the event to see what the venue was like-all Yorkshire folk I may add and Scarborough is one of those magical places in peoples hearts and souls from way back when....

As above our 3rd weekend date is not available for 2011 and we are waiting on the Spa management to shuffle stuff around, I'd also like to hear from anyone with Modern events planned in the Autumn Sept / Oct 2011 (bigger events please not 30 / 40 soul night type stuff) so we can plan accordingly.

Cheers
Rob

Must admit, I sit and listen rather than dance these days. It doesn't mean I'm not appreciating what the DJ is offering. I think you make a very good point there. What's the ideal Zimmer rhythm anyway? And I noticed the Spa lift got some use, maybe 'cos the stairs were becoming too much :D ! In a few more years you'll be booking the Tea Rooms  .

LOL, Don't think you have connected my username with who I am John as we have had this conversation many times before. Try clicking on my profile & then the penny might drop

You didn't have a choice Rob as I'd have turned up with a system & opened one anyway

Was good chatting Nev & next time Shelley might not be there so we can get down to some serious 'matrix number' discussions (where's the zzzz smiley gone!).

Don't worry about the invite either fella as you're top of the list mate

Great news about the 3rd room Rob (how about a 4th un  )

Thought of me getting my hands around your big box has put me right off my tea :hypo:

Cunnie, methinks the penny (or groat in my case ) might have dropped. I'm getting slow in my dotage. Get yourself down to the Horti or Washington and there's a pint in it. We can re-discuss the whole thing again.  or we could just drink beer and listen. Or dance???:g:

Must admit, I sit and listen rather than dance these days. It doesn't mean I'm not appreciating what the DJ is offering.I think you make a very good point there.

Also found that, with all the time spent listening and discussing, I now appreciate a much wider range of styles, sounds, tempos etc. I probably love soul music, rather than dancing, more now than I ever have. :lamsey: I can live with that. :elvis:

Presumably on the ground floor with Horlicks Room, afternoon kip facilities and hip replacement service. If I ever end up in an old folks home, I'll start a soul afternoon there. I've seen 'em on t'telly doing waltzes and stuff, with sound systems all provided by Social Services. It's not a massive leap. Even talcum powder is free.

See you all again soon, I hope.

hey up john ,i staggerd in to that room.and i think most people do at all events ,so i think people give it a go and mke there own minds up what they prefer, which reflecks on amount of people in each room tells a story on what they want to hear.i like a wide range but luv mi oldies like you know  .but i av to ad the djs do play lot same stuff when there is hundreds sounds being ignored which i beleive to be top northern sounds.so djs dig em out:thumbsup: .

Eyup Daz, hope you're well mate. I think you've hit the nail on the head. Nothing wrong with oldies, I love 'em as well, but there are so many great tunes you hardly if ever hear. That's a message I'm being told more and more, so let's hope it happens.
Sithee soon
