as Alfie is strutting around Ikea i will get this lookback started

im being biased but im being honest too in saying that last nights Ghetto Soul was brilliant from start to finish with top tuneage being played by all the djs and a good size crowd lapping it all up, we had Nicki celebrating her birthday (hope you enjoy the pressies) and there was cake cake and more cake and bloody nice they was too :D a massive thanks to all those that made the effort to come and support last night we really do hope you went home happy and will be beack in the future for more of what Ghetto Soul has to offer :hatsoff2: great seeing the IOW crowd and no doubt will be looking for them tunes you got on your phones :D too many others to mention individualy but will mention a few like my great friend Ang, Matt from Trowbridge, Steve, Dave & Jan, Shay from dorset, Tracey & John, Bob & Ann, Sallie & Rod BUT the biggest thanks to all the djs and last nights guest djs Dave Morris (have you stopped smiling yet Dave) and Steve C for a couple of cracking sets to see the night out and for me make this probably the best Ghetto Soul yet :hatsoff2:

the standard has been set and our 1st Anniversay in October will be the next installment of Ghetto Soul and i for one just cant wait

once again thanks to everyone that made last night a cracking night its what it should be all about for me

Tracey and John are relaxing after a fantastic night at Ghetto Soul Club last night. What a great why to celebrate my lovely sister nicki's birthday, along with our lovely friends and cake cake and more cake plus a few little drinkies.

We really enjoyed listerning to all the DJs sets and hearing rare and lesser known choons. My two favs were Papa Bear and the Cubs and Ann Peebles from Bearsy record box. Johns favs were Joe Simon 'When' (Dave Morris record box) and TNT band 'Meditation' again Bearsy set.

Thanks again for a brilliant evening Alfie and Bearsy see you soon for another fix of Ghetto

lots of love

I must say what a great night it was last night.Big thanks to the boys for the invite to spin some underplayed tunes.I must admit that was a touch concerned about what to play but, having sorted a small box out off I went to Ghetto Soul courtesy of a lift from Tim.

I was on for an hour and had a really enjoyable time behind the decks playing tunes that normally I play early doors at The Uni nights in Bournemouth.

Bearsy no I haven't stopped smiling :D :D :D .

If you've not been up for this night then please put the next one in your diaries and go along with an open mind and enjoy the music.

My playlist as requested by couple of people. These are not rare but certainly need playing more IMHO.

Jackie Verdell - Are You Ready For This
Al Reed - Sorry About That
Grover Mitchell - Sorry About That
Charles Conrad - You Got The Love
Innocent Bystanders - Frantic Escape
Johnny & Jake - I Need Your Help
Lee LaMont - I'll Take Love
Charles Mann - Hey Little Girl
Kindly Shepherds - Lend Me Your Hand
Martha Bass - Since I've Been Born Again
Apollas - Sorry Mama
Syl Johnson - Try Me
Gene & Eddie - Sweet Little Girl
Lena & The Deltanettes - Turn Around Baby
Rivingtons - You're Gonna Pay
Casinos - If I Told You
T-K-O's - The Fat Man
Cynthia & The Imaginations - Hey Boy (I Love You)

Many thanks to Alfie for asking me to spin some tunes. Totally agree with the general concensus that the music was fresh and most enjoyable. Hadn't seen the likes of Matt, Dave and Shay/Jackie for some time so was good to see them aswell as the likes of Bearsy, Marie, Tim, Dave/Jan and the "Birthday" posse.

. Ghetto Soul, Saturday July 30th.
.
.
. Well, I hope this write-up isn't a bit late in the day.
.
. Judging by the line-up for the occasion, there was no doubt in my mind that sizeable measures of uptempo soul music would be delivered throughout the night. Unfortunately, Jan & I arrived a little too late to get a flavour of Bearsy's music and although we were there, we couldn't devote too much attention to the first half of Tim Smithers' set either. It was one of those interactive nights where people wanted to catch up with one another and consequently, we found ourselves immersed in conversations.
. Eventually we settled down just as the music was turning to a more mid-tempo, lighter edged phase. I danced a little here and there, but noted with Simon Preston that Jackie (Shay's wife), Lynne, Nikki and Tracey Shaw, Sandy Kelly, Sallie Reynolds, Jan and other females were enjoying the dancefloor. Simon and Tim are really good friends. So much so that they often jokingly enjoy pulling fur out of one another. So Simon took great pleasure in pointing his finger and announcing, "Look! He's playing girlie music!"
. Even if that was the case? It was working well. Nikki Shaw was celebrating her birthday and as always had a big smile on her face. She's an independant type of woman who loves interacting with others. From what I've witnessed, she always enjoys a good night of soul.
. I know she's a little girl at heart! But I only counted 7 candles on her birthday cake?
.
. Tim's set ended with a cracking number by Johnnie Mae Mathews before he handed things over to Dave Morris. I think it was an astute move by Alfie to put a gap in between the offerings of Tim and Steve C. Two leading edge players that have a similar feel within some of their music.
. Dave Morris being raised in Blackburn, is from the old school who experienced the early years of Northern Soul and thus, he delved back to play alot of music from that era to provide an alternative feel to the night.
. Some I could pick out. Like Fred Hughes - Don't let me down, The Innocent Bystanders - Frantic Escape and The Apollas - Sorry Mamma. But much of Dave's really good (underplayed) rare music left question marks in my head as to whether or not I'd actually ever heard them?
. Another I did recognize was Vivian Reed's anthem - The shape of things to come, it's really growing on me courtesy of the couple of times I've heard it before from Dave at Bournemouth University soul nights.
.
. Steve C followed on and entered the fray with three upbeat RnB funk edged soul numbers. I couldn't name any of them, but they were in a similar vane to one of Tim's earlier plays Marva Whitney - Daddy don't know about sugar bear. Niter music that I believe is well received in The Midlands and up north and yet we generally struggle with down south. I liked them, but (as with some of Tim Smithers' plays) need to hear them again to fully grasp and truly appreciate them.
. Steve then lightened the tone, but still kept it fairly uptempo. I really enjoyed You can walk out the dooor if you want to - Yvonne Fair and Bags - It's Heavy. Steve when asked later, always a mine of information, provided an in depth background to these records. If ever there was a Mastermind of Soul Contest, he'd be a serious contender.
.
. Our venerable host Alfie, closed off with the last 15 minutes prior to 1 a.m. - Vontastics - You can work it out and the retro feel of Billy Hawks - O' Baby I believe I'm losing you did it for me.
.
. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
.
. To summarize, I think we've all at some time experienced a night where people are rooted to their seats and starring across an open space at one another like zombies. Well, with rare and underplayed music being on the menu, you would expect an element of this at Ghetto Soul.
. But in reality it wasn't a night of heavy chin scratching. It was warm and vibrant. People were taking to the floor at different stages and really getting into the music.
. There were times when I was dancing away with others during Dave Morris' and Steve C's sets, unable or too idle to venture over to the decks to clock certain plays. On more than a couple of occasions whilst catching a breather, I would belatedly turn to a fellow dancer and query, "What was that last record we were dancing to?" Each time I received a shrug of the shoulders or a shake of the head and a typical response, "I don't know? I just liked it!"
. We were dancing on instinct and impulse as you would when as a teenager. The night had that feel and special energy. We really enjoyed it!
.
. Dave & Jan Mortimore
.
. P.S. We also enjoyed the cake. Thanks Nikki (and no doubt, Tracey)
.

Four final words from me.....Smithers, "Foxy", Jammy B******!!!!!!

Many Thanx for Steve...hope to catch up soon...

Thanks Nikki (and no doubt, Tracey)
.

Hi Dave Was good to see you & Jan...many thanx for the feed back...as always spot on...
